The study of the gas in the envelopes surrounding asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars through observations in the millimetre wavelength range provides information about the history and nature of these molecular factories. Here we present ALMA observations at subarsecond resolution, complemented with IRAM-30m data, of several lines of SiO, SiS, and CS towards the best-studied AGB circumstellar envelope, IRC+10216. We aim to characterise their spatial distribution and determine their fractional abundances mainly through radiative transfer and chemical modelling. The three species display extended emission with several enhanced emission shells. CS displays the most extended distribution reaching distances up to approximately 20''. SiS and SiO emission have similar sizes of approximately 11'', but SiS emission is slightly more compact. We have estimated fractional abundances relative to H$_2$, which on average are equal to f(SiO)$\sim$10$^{-7}$, f(SiS)$\sim$10$^{-6}$, and f(CS)$\sim$10$^{-6}$ up to the photo-dissociation region. The observations and analysis presented here show evidence that the circumstellar material displays clear deviations from an homogeneous spherical wind, with clumps and low density shells that may allow UV photons from the interstellar medium (ISM) to penetrate deep into the envelope, shifting the photo-dissociation radius inwards. Our chemical model predicts photo-dissociation radii compatible with those derived from the observations, although it is unable to predict abundance variations from the starting radius of the calculations ($\sim$10$R_{*}$), which may reflect the simplicity of the model. We conclude that the spatial distribution of the gas proves the episodic and variable nature of the mass loss mechanism of IRC+10216, on timescales of hundreds of years.
VLBI observations of SiO masers recover at most 40-50% of the total flux obtained by single dish observations at any spectral channel. Some previous studies seems to indicate that, at least, part of the lost flux is divided up into many weak components rather than in a large resolved emission area. Taking benefit of the high sensitivity and resolution of the HSA, we investigate the problem of the missing flux in VLBI observations of SiO maser emission at 7mm in the AGB stars and obtain a high dynamic range map of IRC+10011. We conclude that the missing flux is mostly contained in many very wea…
The circumstellar envelope of the hypergiant star IRC+10420 has been traced as far out in SiO J=2-1 as in CO J = 1-0 and CO J = 2-1, in dramatic contrast with the centrally condensed (thermal) SiO- but extended CO-emitting envelopes of giant and supergiant stars. Here, we present an observation of the circumstellar envelope in SiO J=1-0 that, when combined with the previous observation in {\sioii}, provide more stringent constraints on the density of the SiO-emitting gas than hitherto possible. The emission in SiO peaks at a radius of $\sim$2\arcsec\ whereas that in SiO J=2-1 emission peaks at…
Context. AGB stars go through a process of strong mass-loss that involves pulsations of the atmosphere, which extends to a region where the conditions are adequate for dust grains to form. Radiation pressure acts on these grains which, coupled to the gas, drive a massive outflow. The details of this process are not clear, including which molecules are involved in the condensation of dust grains. Aims. To study the role of the SiO molecule in the process of dust formation and mass-loss in M-type AGB stars. Methods. Using the IRAM NOEMA interferometer we observed the $^{28}$SiO and $^{29}$SiO $J…
We present new Effelsberg-100 m, ATCA, and VLA observations of rotational SiS transitions in the circumstellar envelope (CSE) of IRC +10216. Thanks to the high angular resolution achieved by the ATCA observations, we unambiguously confirm that the molecule's J=1-0 transition exhibits maser action in this CSE, as first suggested more than thirty years ago. The maser emission's radial velocity peaking at a local standard of rest velocity of -39.862$\pm$0.065 km/s indicates that it arises from an almost fully accelerated shell. Monitoring observations show time variability of the SiS (1-0) maser.…
A single dish monitoring of millimeter maser lines SiS J=14-13 and HCN nu_2 = 1^f J=3-2 and several other rotational lines is reported for the archetypal carbon star IRC+10216. Relative line strength variations of 5%~30% are found for eight molecular line features with respect to selected reference lines. Definite line-shape variation is found in limited velocity intervals of the SiS and HCN line profiles. The asymmetrical line profiles of the two lines are mainly due to the varying components. Their dominant varying components of the line profiles have similar periods and phases as the IR lig…

We report the detection during the ALMA Cycle 0 of SiS rotational lines in high-vibrational states as well as SiO and SiC$_2$ lines in their ground vibrational state, towards IRC+10216. The spatial distribution of these molecules shows compact emission for SiS and a more extended emission for SiO and SiC$_2$, and also proves the existence of an increase in the SiC$_2$ emission at the outer shells of the circumstellar envelope. We analyze the excitation conditions of the vibrationally excited SiS using the population diagram technique and we used a large velocity gradient model to compare with …
We present new high angular resolution interferometer observations of the v=0 J=14-13 and 15-14 SiS lines towards IRC+10216, carried out with CARMA and ALMA. The maps, with angular resolutions of ~0.25"and 0.55", reveal (1) an extended, roughly uniform, and weak emission with a size of ~0.5", (2) a component elongated approximately along the East-West direction peaking at ~0.13" and 0.17" at both sides of the central star, and (3) two blue- and red-shifted compact components peaking around 0.07" to the NW of the star. We have modeled the emission with a 3D radiation transfer code finding that …
Aim: We aim to determine the abundances of CS, SiO, and SiS in a large sample of carbon star envelopes covering a wide range of mass loss rates to investigate the potential role that these molecules could play in the formation of dust in the surroundings of the central AGB star. Methods: We surveyed a sample of 25 carbon-rich AGB stars in the $λ$ 2 mm band, using the IRAM 30 m telescope. We performed excitation and radiative transfer calculations based on the LVG method to model the observed lines of the molecules and to derive their fractional abundances in the observed CSEs. Results: We dete…
We present low spectral resolution molecular interferometric observations at 1.2 mm obtained with the Combined Array for Research in Millimetre-wave Astronomy (CARMA) towards the C-rich AGB star IRC+10216. We have mapped the emission of several lines of SiS, H13CN, SiO, and SiC2 in the ground and first excited vibrational states with a high angular resolution of 0.25 arcsec. These observations have allowed us to partially resolve the emission of the envelope at distances from the star <50 stellar radii (R*), where the stellar wind is mainly accelerated. The structure of the molecular emission …
The interstellar medium is enriched primarily by matter ejected from evolved low and intermediate mass stars. The outflows from these stars create a circumstellar envelope in which a rich gas-phase and dust-nucleation chemistry takes place. We observed the nearest carbon-rich evolved star, IRC+10216, using the PACS (55-210 μm) and SPIRE (194-672 μm) spectrometers on board Herschel. We find several tens of lines from SiS and SiO, including lines from the v=1 vibrational level. For SiS these transitions range up to J=124-123, corresponding to energies around 6700K, while the highest detectable t…
Aims: We aim to determine the abundances of SiO, CS, SiS, SO, and SO$_2$ in a large sample of oxygen-rich AGB envelopes covering a wide range of mass loss rates to investigate the potential role that these molecules could play in the formation of dust in these environments. Methods:We surveyed a sample of 30 oxygen-rich AGB stars in the $λ$ 2 mm band using the IRAM 30m telescope. We performed excitation and radiative transfer calculations based on the LVG method to model the observed lines of the molecules and to derive their fractional abundances in the observed envelopes. Results:We detected…
Context. With the outstanding spatial resolution and sensitivity of the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA), molecular gas other than the abundant CO can be observed and resolved in circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) around evolved stars, such as the binary S-type Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) star W Aquilae. Aims. We aim to constrain the chemical composition of the CSE and determine the radial abundance distribution, the photospheric peak abundance, and isotopic ratios of a selection of chemically important molecular species in the innermost CSE of W Aql. The derived parameters a…
We present ALMA band 6 observations of the luminous blue variable Eta Car, obtained within the ALMAGAL program. We report SiO J=5-4, SiS J=12-11 and SiN N=5-4 emission in the equatorial region of the Homunculus nebula, constituting the first detection of silicon- and sulphur-bearing molecules in the outskirts of a highly evolved, early-type massive star. SiO, SiS and SiN trace a clumpy equatorial ring that surrounds the central binary at a projected distance of 2 arcsec, delineating the inner rims of the butterfly-shaped dusty region. The formation of silicon-bearing compounds is presumably re…
We present high spectral resolution mid-IR observations of SiS towards the C-rich AGB star IRC+10216 carried out with the Texas Echelon-cross-Echelle Spectrograph mounted on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. We have identified 204 ro-vibrational lines of 28Si32S, 26 of 29Si32S, 20 of 28Si34S, and 15 of 30Si32S in the frequency range 720-790 cm-1. These lines belong to bands v=1-0, 2-1, 3-2, 4-3, and 5-4, and involve rotational levels with Jlow<90. About 30 per cent of these lines are unblended or weakly blended and can be partially or entirely fitted with a code developed to model the mid-…

通过高分辨率 ALMA 观测,研究氧丰富晚生星的内 circumstellar 包层,发现高激发 SiO 线的分布特征及与质量损失的关系。
Circumstellar environments of oxygen-rich stars are among the strongest SiO maser emitters. Physical processes such as collisions, infrared pumping and overlaps favors the inversion of level population and produce maser emission at different vibrational states. Despite numerous observational and theoretical efforts, we still do not have an unified picture including all the physical processes involved in the SiO maser emission. The aim of this work is to provide homogeneous data in a large sample of oxygen-rich stars. We present a survey of 67 oxygen-rich stars from 7 to 1 mm, in their rotation…
Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) is important for understanding the composition of the present-day interstellar medium (ISM) and of our solar system. In this paper, we aim to track the GCE by using the 29Si/30Si ratios in evolved stars and tentatively relate this to presolar grain composition. We used the APEX telescope to detect thermal SiO isotopologue emission toward four oxygen-rich M-type stars. Together with the data retrieved from the Herschel science archive and from the literature, we were able to obtain the 29Si/30Si ratios for a total of 15 evolved stars inferred from their optical…
We present $^{29}$SiO(J=8--7) $ν$=0, SiS (J=19--18) $ν$=0, and $^{28}$SiO (J=8--7) $ν$=1 molecular line archive observations made with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) of the molecular outflow associated with Orion Source I. The observations show velocity asymmetries about the flow axis which are interpreted as outflow rotation. We find that the rotation velocity ($\sim$4--8 km s$^{-1}$) decreases with the vertical distance to the disk. In contrast, the cylindrical radius ($\sim$100--300 au), the expansion velocity ($\sim$2--15 km s$^{-1}$), and the axial velocity $v_{\r…
The mysterious 21micron emission feature seen in sixteen C-rich proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe) remains unidentified since its discovery in 1989. Over a dozen of materials are suggested as the carrier candidates. In this work we quantitatively investigate eight inorganic and one organic carrier candidates in terms of elemental abundance constraints, while previous studies mostly focus on their spectral profiles (which could be largely affected by grain size, shape and clustering effects). It is found that: (1) five candidates (TiC nanoclusters, fullerenes coordinated with Ti atoms, SiS$_2$, dop…
We carried out a millimeter wavelength line survey between 79 and 356 GHz with the IRAM-30m telescope to investigate the physical and chemical properties of the molecular envelope of the oxygen-rich AGB star IK Tau. We analysed the molecular lines detected using the population diagram technique to derive rotational temperatures and column densities. Additionally, we conducted a radiative transfer analysis of the SO$_2$ lines detected. For the first time in this source we detected rotational lines in the ground vibrational state of HCO$^+$, NS, NO, and H$_2$CO, as well as several isotopologues …
We report the first molecular line survey of Supernova 1987A in the millimetre wavelength range. In the ALMA 210--300 and 340--360 GHz spectra, we detected cold (20--170 K) CO, 28SiO, HCO+ and SO, with weaker lines of 29SiO from ejecta. This is the first identification of HCO+ and SO in a young supernova remnant. We find a dip in the J=6--5 and 5--4 SiO line profiles, suggesting that the ejecta morphology is likely elongated. The difference of the CO and SiO line profiles is consistent with hydrodynamic simulations, which show that Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities cause mixing of gas, with heavie…
We present ALMA continuum and molecular line emission maps at $\sim$1 mm of OH 231.8, a well studied bipolar nebula around an AGB star. The excellent angular resolution of our maps ($\sim$20 mas) allows us to scrutinise the central nebular regions of OH 231.8, which hold the clues to unravel how this iconic object assembled its complex nebular architecture. We report, for the first time in this object and others of its kind, the discovery of a rotating circumbinary disk selectively traced by NaCl, KCl, and H$_2$O emission lines. This represents the first detection of KCl in an oxygen-rich AGB …
A spectral line and imaging survey of the low mass-loss rate AGB star R Dor (Mdot ~ 1e-7 Msun/yr) and the high mass-loss rate AGB star IK Tau (Mdot ~5e-6 Msun/yr) was made with ALMA between 335 and 362 GHz at a spatial resolution of ~150 mas, corresponding to the locus of the main dust formation region of both targets. Some 200 spectral features from 15 molecules (and their isotopologues) were observed, including rotational lines in both the ground and vibrationally excited states. Detected species include the gaseous precursors of dust grains such as SiO, AlO, AlOH, TiO, and TiO2. We present …
