Odd-frequency superconductivity represents a truly unconventional ordered state which, in contrast to conventional superconductivity, exhibits pair correlations which are odd in relative time and, hence, inherently dynamical. In this review article we provide an overview of recent advances in the study of odd-frequency superconducting correlations in one-dimensional systems. In particular, we focus on recent developments in the study of nanowires with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and metallic edges of two-dimensional topological insulators in proximity to conventional superconductors. These systems have recently elicited a great deal of interest due to their potential for realizing one-dimensional topological superconductivity whose edges can host Majorana zero modes. We also provide a detailed discussion of the intimate relationship between Majorana zero modes and odd-frequency pairing. Throughout this review, we highlight the ways in which odd-frequency pairing provides a deeper understanding of the unconventional superconducting correlations present in each of these intriguing systems and how the study and control of these states holds the potential for future applications.
We first show the realization of exceptional points in a non-Hermitian superconducting system based on a conventional superconductor and then demonstrate that, surprisingly, the system hosts odd-frequency pairing, solely generated by the non-Hermiticity. While there is a coexistence of even- and odd-frequency pairs under general conditions, we find that the even-frequency term vanishes at the exceptional degeneracies, leaving only odd-frequency pairing. This exceptional odd-frequency pairing is directly given by the imaginary part of the eigenvalues at the exceptional points and can be measure…
We study the behavior of Cooper pair amplitudes that emerge when a two-dimensional superconductor is coupled to two parallel nanowires, focusing on the conditions for realizing odd-frequency pair amplitudes in the absence of spin-orbit coupling or magnetism. In general, any finite tunneling between the superconductor and the two nanowires induces odd-frequency spin-singlet pair amplitudes in the substrate as well as a substantial odd-frequency interwire pairing, both of which vanish locally. Interestingly, in the regime of strong superconductor-nanowire tunneling, we find that the presence of …
We investigate the induced superconducting pair correlations in junctions between a conventional spin-singlet $s$-wave superconductor and a disordered normal metal. Decomposing the pair amplitude based on its symmetries in the time domain, we demonstrate that the odd-time, or equivalently odd-frequency, spin-singlet $p$-wave correlations are both significant in size and entirely robust against random non-magnetic disorder. We find that these odd-frequency correlations can even be generated by disorder. Our results show that anisotropic odd-frequency pairing represent an important fraction of t…
Vertical graphene heterostructures made up of graphene layers separated by BN spacers allow for novel ways of tuning the interactions between electrons. We study the possibility of electron pairing mediated by modified repulsive interactions. Long range intravalley and short range intervalley interactions give rise to different anisotropic phases. We show that a superconducting state with gaps of opposite signs in different valleys, an odd momentum pairing state, can exist above carrier densities of $5-10 \times 10^{13} {\rm cm}^{-2}$. The dependence of the transition temperature on the differ…
We consider normal-superconductor (NS) and superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junctions based on one-dimensional nanowires with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and proximity-induced $s$-wave spin-singlet superconductivity and analytically demonstrate how both even- and odd-frequency and spin-singlet and -triplet superconducting pair correlations are always present. In particular, by using a fully quantum mechanical scattering approach, we show that Andreev reflection induces mixing of spatial parities at interfaces, thus being the unique process which generates odd-frequency pairing; on the…
We have investigated the proximity effect in superconductor/ferromagnet junctions in a systematic manner to discuss the relationship between the zero-energy peak (ZEP) of the local density of states (LDOS) and spin-triplet odd-frequency pairing. By exactly solving the nonlinear Usadel equations, we have found that the ZEP is realized in a wide range of geometrical and material parameters in the case of the noncollinear magnetization. This strongly suggests the robustness of the ZEP induced by spin-triplet odd-frequency pairing in such systems. We also found that the crossover from singlet pair…
The presence of shell structure and the accompanying high level degeneracy leads to a strengthening of the pairing interaction in some metallic nanoclusters and ions. It is predicted that for some specific systems one can expect a large increase in the values of the critical temperature and other parameters.
We theoretically predict proximity-induced odd-frequency (odd-$ω$) pairing on the surface of a Weyl nodal loop semimetal, characterized by a nodal loop Fermi surface and drumhead-like surface states (DSSs), attached to conventional spin-singlet $s$-wave superconducting leads. Due to the complete spin polarization of the DSS, odd-$ω$ equal-spin triplet pairing is present, and we show that it gives rise to a finite Josephson current. Placing an additional ferromagnet in the junction can also generate odd-$ω$ mixed-spin triplet pairing, but the pairing and current is not affected if the magnetiza…
Unlike bulk superconductivity, where one energy scale, the energy gap, characterizes pairing correlations, we show that in small superconducting grains there exist two different such quantities. The first characterizes cumulative properties of the grain, such as the condensation energy, and the second single-particle properties. To describe these two energy scales, we define two corresponding pairing parameters, and show that although both reduce to the bulk gap for large grains, this occurs at different size scales.
We investigate odd-frequency superconducting correlations in normal-superconductor (NS) and short superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junctions with the S region described by the Kitaev model of spinless fermions in one dimension. We demonstrate that, in both the trivial and topological phases, Andreev reflection is responsible for the coexistence of even- and odd-frequency pair amplitudes at interfaces, while normal reflections solely contribute to odd-frequency pairing. At NS interfaces we find that the odd-frequency pair amplitude exhibits large, but finite, values in the topological…
Odd frequency (odd-$ω$) electron pair correlations naturally appear at the interface between BCS superconductors and other materials. The detection of odd-$ω$ pairs, which are necessarily non-local in time, is still an open problem. The main reason is that they do not contribute to static measurements described by time-local correlation functions. Therefore, dynamical measurements, which depend on non-local time correlations, are suitable for detecting these pairs. In this work, we study the signatures of odd-$ω$ pairs in the supercurrent noise through a weak link between two superconductors a…
The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model describes fermions that hop on a one-dimensional chain with staggered hopping amplitude, where the unit cell contains two sites, or two sublattices. In this work we consider the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with superconducting pairing and show that the sublattice index acts as an additional quantum number in the classification of Cooper pairs, giving rise to inter- and intra-sublattice odd-frequency pair correlations in the bulk. Interestingly, this system behaves as a two band superconductor where the bulk odd-frequency correlations depend solely on the intrinsic…
We explore the role of proximity-induced odd-frequency pairing in the thermoelectricity of a ferromagnet when coupled to a conventional $s$-wave spin-singlet superconductor through a spin-active interface. By varying both the polarization and its direction in the ferromagnet and the interfacial spin-orbit interaction strength, we analyze the behavior of all proximity-induced pair amplitudes in the ferromagnet and their contributions to the thermoelectric coefficients. Based on our results for the Seebeck coefficient, we predict that odd-frequency spin-triplet Cooper pairs are much efficient th…
We report observation of the nonlinear Meissner effect (NLME) in Nb films by measuring the resonance frequency of a planar superconducting cavity as a function of the magnitude and the orientation of a parallel magnetic field. Use of low power rf probing in films thinner than the London penetration depth, significantly increases the field for the vortex penetration onset and enables NLME detection under true equilibrium conditions. The data agree very well with calculations based on the Usadel equations. We propose to use NLME angular spectroscopy to probe unconventional pairing symmetries in …
Superconducting correlations which are long-ranged in magnetic systems have attracted much attention due to their spin-polarization properties and potential use in spintronic devices. Whereas experiments have demonstrated the slow decay of such correlations, it has proven more difficult to obtain a smoking gun signature of their odd-frequency character which is responsible, e.g. for their gapless behavior. We here demonstrate that the magnetic susceptibility response of a normal metal in contact with a superconducting spin-valve provides precisely this signature, namely in form of an anomalous…
We study the unconventional superconducting correlations caused by a single isolated magnetic impurity in a conventional s-wave superconductor. Due to the local breaking of time-reversal symmetry, the impurity induces unconventional superconductivity which is even in both space and spin variables but odd under time inversion. We derive an exact proportionality relation between the even-frequency component of the local electron density of states and the imaginary part of the odd-frequency local pairing function. By applying this relation to scanning tunneling microscopy spectra taken on top of …
We investigate the emergence and consequences of odd-frequency spin-triplet s-wave pairing in superconducting hybrid junctions at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator without any magnetism. More specifically, we consider several different normal-superconductor hybrid systems at the topological insulator edge, where spin-singlet s-wave superconducting pairing is proximity-induced from an external conventional superconductor. We perform fully analytical calculations and show that odd-frequency mixed spin-triplet s-wave pairing arises due to the unique spin-momentum locking in the …
We find the spin polarized disordered Fermi liquids are unstable to the nucleation of superconducting pairing states at mesoscopic scales even when magnetic fields which polarize the spins are substantially higher than the critical one. We study the probability of finding superconducting pairing states at mesoscopic scales in this limit. We find that the distribution function depends only on the film conductance. The typical length scale at which pairing takes place is universal, and decreases when the magnetic field is increased. The number density of these states determines the strength of t…
Motivated by recent experimental progress, we study the effect of mechanical deformations on the superconducting pairing symmetries in monolayer black phosphorus (MBP). Starting with phonon-mediated intervalley spin-singlet electron-electron pairing and making use of realistic band parameters obtained through first-principles calculations, we show that the application of weak mechanical strain in the plane of MBP can change the effective $s$-wave and $p$-wave symmetry of the superconducting correlations into effective $d$-wave and $f$-wave symmetries, respectively. This prediction of a change …
Magnetic molecules adsorbed on a superconductor give rise to a local competition of Cooper pair and Kondo singlet formation inducing subgap bound states. For Manganese-phthalocyanine molecules on a Pb(111) substrate, scanning tunneling spectroscopy resolves pairs of subgap bound states and two Kondo screening channels. We show in a combined approach of scaling and numerical renormalization group calculations that the intriguing relation between Kondo screening and superconducting pairing is solely determined by the hybridization strength with the substrate. We demonstrate that an effective one…
Pairing symmetry plays a central role in the study of superconductivity. It is usually characterized by integer partial-waves, for example, $s$-, $p$-, $d$-waves. In this article, we investigate a new class of topological superconductivity whose gap functions possess a half-odd-integer monopole charge and, therefore, fractionalized half-odd-integer partial-wave symmetry in three dimensions. This exotic pairing occurs between Fermi surfaces of which Chern numbers are differed by an odd integer. The corresponding superconducting gap function is represented by monopole harmonics with half-odd-int…
The existence of topological superconductors preserving time-reversal symmetry was recently predicted, and they are expected to provide a solid-state realization of itinerant massless Majorana fermions and a route to topological quantum computation. Their first concrete example, CuxBi2Se3, was discovered last year, but the search for new materials has so far been hindered by the lack of guiding principle. Here, we report point-contact spectroscopy experiments showing that the low-carrier-density superconductor Sn_{1-x}In_{x}Te is accompanied with surface Andreev bound states which, with the he…
We study a Kitaev chain model, which is the simplest model of topological superconductors hosting Majorana fermion, appearing as a zero-energy state at the edge. We analytically calculate the Green's function of the semi-infinite Kitaev chain with a delta-function-type impurity potential within the quasi-classical regime to obtain the spatial dependence of the induced odd-frequency pairing. It is found that if the position of the impurity is not far from the edge, the spatial profile of the local density of states (LDOS) and the odd-frequency spin-triplet $s$-wave pair amplitude is tunable as …
