The study of critical properties of systems with long-range interactions has attracted in the last decades a continuing interest and motivated the development of several analytical and numerical techniques, in particular in connection with spin models. From the point of view of the investigation of their criticality, a special role is played by systems in which the interactions are long-range enough that their universality class is different from the short-range case and, nevertheless, they maintain the extensivity of thermodynamical quantities. Such interactions are often called weak long-range. In this paper we focus on the study of the critical behaviour of spin systems with weak-long range couplings using renormalization group, and we review their remarkable properties. For the sake of clarity and self-consistency, we start from the classical $O(N)$ spin models and we then move to quantum spin systems.
Since Self-Organised Criticality (SOC) was introduced in 1987, both the nature of the self-organisation and the criticality remains controversial. Recent observations on rain precipitation and brain activity suggest that real systems display a dynamics that is similar to the one observed in SOC systems, making a better understanding of such systems more urgent. Here we focus on the Drossel-Schwable forest-fire model (FFM) of SOC and show that despite the model has been proved to not being critical, it nevertheless exhibits a behavior that justifies the introduction of a new kind of $\textit{we…
Dynamical quantum phase transitions hold a deep connection to the underlying equilibrium physics of the quench Hamiltonian. In a recent study [J.~C.~Halimeh \textit{et al.}, arXiv:1810.07187], it has been numerically demonstrated that the appearance of anomalous cusps in the Loschmidt return rate coincides with the presence of bound domain walls in the spectrum of the quench Hamiltonian. Here, we consider transverse-field Ising chains with power-law and exponentially decaying interactions, and show that by removing domain-wall coupling via a truncated Jordan-Wigner transformation onto a Kitaev…
Finite size scaling (FSS) analysis of the liquid gas criticality is complicated by the absence of any broken symmetry. This, in particular, does not allow a straightforward finding of the coexistence line and the critical point. The numerical flowgram (NF) method is adapted for a controlled determination of the coexistence line and the critical point, with the critical indices $μ,\, ν$ measured within 1-2% of the total error. The approach based on the NF for measuring the non-analytical corrections to the diameter - the mean density of the liquid and gas phases along the coexistence line - is …
We study quantum phase transitions in Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with a staggered power-law decaying long-range interactions. Employing the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm and the fidelity susceptibility as the criticality measure, we establish more accurate values of quantum critical points than the results obtained from the spin-wave approximation, quantum Monte Carlo and DMRG in literatures. The deviation is especially evident for strong long-range interactions. We extend isotropic long-range interactions to the anisotropic cases and find that kaleidoscope of …
We analyze the quantum trajectory dynamics of free fermions subject to continuous monitoring. For weak monitoring, we identify a novel dynamical regime of subextensive entanglement growth, reminiscent of a critical phase with an emergent conformal invariance. For strong monitoring, however, the dynamics favors a transition into a quantum Zeno-like area-law regime. Close to the critical point, we observe logarithmic finite size corrections, indicating a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless mechanism underlying the transition. This uncovers an unconventional entanglement transition in an elementary, …
We present a controlled rare-weak-link theory of the superfluid-to-Bose/Mott glass transition in one-dimensional disordered systems. The transition has Kosterlitz-Thouless critical properties but may occur at an arbitrary large value of the Luttinger parameter $K$. In contrast to the scenario by Altman {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 81}, 174528 (2010)], the hydrodynamic description is valid under the correlation radius and defines criticality via the renormalization of microscopically weak links, along the lines of Kane and Fisher [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 68}, 1220 (1992)]. The hallmark of the …
We study the long-range quantum correlations in the anisotropic XY-model. By first examining the thermodynamic limit we show that employing the quantum discord as a figure of merit allows one to capture the main features of the model at zero temperature. Further, by considering suitably large site separations we find that these correlations obey a simple scaling behavior for finite temperatures, allowing for efficient estimation of the critical point. We also address ground-state factorization of this model by explicitly considering finite size systems, showing its relation to the energy spect…
Monte Carlo study of the deconfined critical action phase diagram reveals a region where spinon deconfinement occurs through a weak first-order phase transition, in agreement with Ginzburg-Landau theory. Wilson renormalization argument in combination with the absence of the data collapse even in the regime of weak interaction between the spinons casts a serious doubt on the possibility of the continuous deconfinement transition. We also argue that if a continuous deconfined criticality does exist on the phase diagram, its nature is analogous, in a certain precise sense, to that of the XY unive…
We study the BTW-height model of self-organized criticality on a square lattice with some long range connections giving to the lattice the character of small world network. We find that as function of the fraction $p$ of long ranged bonds the power law of the avalanche size and lifetime distribution changes following a crossover scaling law with crossover exponents 2/3 and 1 for size and lifetime respectively.
The transverse-field $XY$ chain with the long-range interactions was investigated by means of the exact-diagonalization method. The algebraic decay rate $σ$ of the long-range interaction is related to the effective dimensionality $D(σ)$, which governs the criticality of the transverse-field-driven phase transition at $H=H_c$. According to the large-$N$ analysis, the phase boundary $H_c(η)$ exhibits a reentrant behavior within $2<D < 3.065\dots $, as the $XY$-anisotropy $η$ changes. On the one hand, as for the $D=(2+1)$ and $(1+1)$ short-range $XY$ magnets, the singularities have been determine…
We study the thermal phase transitions of the four-fold degenerate phases (the plaquette and single stripe states) in two-dimensional frustrated Ising model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice using Monte Carlo simulations. The critical Ashkin-Teller-like behavior is identified both in the parameter regions with the plaquette and single stripe phases, respectively. The four-state Potts-critical end points differentiating the continuous transitions from the first-order ones are estimated based on finite-size scaling analyses. Furthermore, similar behavior of the transition to the four-fold single…
We study the effect of acoustic phonons on the quantum phase transition in the O($N$) model. We develop a renormalization group analysis near (3+1) space-time dimensions and derive the RG equations using an $ε$-expansion. Our results indicate that when the number of flavors of the underlying O($N$) model exceeds a critical number $N_c=4$, the quantum transition remains second-order of the Wilson-Fisher type while, for $N\le 4$, it is a weakly first-order transition. We characterize this weakly first-order transition by a length-scale $ξ^*$, below which the behavior appears to be critical. At f…
Long-range quantum lattice systems often exhibit drastically different behavior than their short-range counterparts. In particular, because they do not satisfy the conditions for the Lieb-Robinson theorem, they need not have an emergent relativistic structure in the form of a light cone. Adopting a field-theoretic approach, we study the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model with long-range interactions, and a fermionic model with long-range hopping and pairing terms, explore their critical and near-critical behavior, and characterize their response to local perturbations. We deduce the …
Long-range effects induce some interesting behavior and considered as a gateway to understand the non-local behavior in the quantum systems. Especially, the long-range topological models became a platform for the realization of new quasi-particles, which are believed to be potential candidates for the topological qubits. In this work, we consider non-Hermitian Su-Schriffer-Heeger (SSH) model and discuss the interplay of non-Hermiticity and long-range effects. We use the approach of momentum space characterization, critical exponents and curvature renormalization group (CRG) method to understan…
Environmental interaction is a fundamental consideration in any controlled quantum system. While interaction with a dissipative bath can lead to decoherence, it can also provide desirable emergent effects including induced spin-spin correlations. In this paper we show that under quite general conditions, a dissipative bosonic bath can induce a long-range ordered phase, without the inclusion of any additional direct spin-spin couplings. Through a quantum-to-classical mapping and classical Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the $T=0$ quantum phase transition of an Ising chain embedded in a b…
Motivated in part by quantum criticality in dissipative Kondo systems, we revisit the finite-size scaling of a classical Ising chain with 1/r^{2-epsilon} interactions. For 1/2<epsilon<1, the scaling of the dynamical spin susceptibility is sensitive to the degree of "winding" of the interaction under periodic boundary conditions. Infinite winding yields the expected mean-field behavior, whereas without any winding the scaling is of an interacting omega/T form. The contrast with the behavior of the Bose-Fermi Kondo model suggests a breakdown of a mapping from the quantum model to a classical one…
In an attempt to theoretically investigate the quantum phase transition and criticality in topological models, we study Kitaev chain with longer-range couplings (finite number of neighbors) as well as truly long-range couplings (infinite number of neighbors). We carry out an extensive topological characterization of the momentum space to explore the possibility of obtaining higher order winding numbers and analyze the nature of their stability in the model. The occurrences of phase transitions from even-to-even and odd-to-odd winding numbers are observed with decreasing longer-rangeness in the…
We develop a gauge theory of the critical behavior of the topological excitations-driven Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition in the XY model with weak quenched disorder. We find that while in two-dimensions the liquid of topological defects exhibits the BKT critical behavior, the three-dimensional system shows more singular Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman criticality heralding its freezing into a spin glass. Our findings provide insights into the topological origin of spin glass formation.
We perform a comparative Monte Carlo study of the easy-plane deconfined critical point (DCP) action and its short-range counterpart to reveal close similarities between the two models for intermediate and strong coupling regimes. For weak coupling, the structure of the phase diagram depends on the interaction range: while the short-range model features a tricritical point and a continuous U(1)xU(1) transition, the long-range DCP action is characterized by the runaway renormalization flow of coupling into a first (I) order phase transition. We develop a "numerical flowgram" method for high preci…
Entanglement exhibits universal behavior near the ground-state critical point where correlations are long-ranged and the thermodynamic entropy is vanishing. On the other hand, a quantum quench imparts extensive energy and results in a build-up of entropy, hence no critical behavior is expected at long times. In this work, we present a new paradigm in the quench dynamics of integrable spin chains which exhibit a ground-state order-disorder phase transition at a critical line. Specifically, we consider a quench along the critical line which displays a volume-law behavior of the entropy and expon…
Driven quantum systems coupled to an environment typically exhibit effectively thermal behavior with relaxational dynamics near criticality. However, a different qualitative behavior might be expected in the weakly dissipative limit due to the competition between coherent dynamics and weak dissipation. In this work, we investigate a driven-dissipative infinite-range Ising model in the presence of individual atomic dissipation, a model that emerges from the paradigmatic open Dicke model in the large-detuning limit. We show that the system undergoes a dynamical crossover from relaxational dynami…

Study of dissipative quantum phase transitions in the Ohmic spin-boson model is numerically challenging in a dense limit of environmental modes. In this work, large-scale numerical simulations are carried out based on the variational principle. The validity of variational calculations, spontaneous breakdown of symmetries, and quantum fluctuations and correlations in the Ohmic bath are carefully analyzed, and the critical coupling as well as exponents are accurately determined in the weak tunneling and continuum limits. In addition, quantum criticality of the Ohmic bath is uncovered both in the…
Long-range interacting spin systems are ubiquitous in physics and exhibit a variety of ground state disorder-to-order phase transitions. We consider a prototype of infinite-range interacting models known as the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model describing the collective interaction of $N$ spins, and investigate the dynamical properties of fluctuations and correlations after a sudden quench of the Hamiltonian. Specifically, we focus on critical quenches, where the initial state and/or the quench Hamiltonian are critical. Depending on the type of quench, we identify three distinct behaviors where…
We show that two-band superconductors harbor hidden criticality deep in the superconducting state, stemming from the critical temperature of the weaker band taken as an independent system. For sufficiently small interband coupling $γ$ the coherence length of the weaker band exhibits a remarkable deviation from the conventional monotonic increase with temperature, namely, a pronounced peak close to the hidden critical point. The magnitude of the peak scales proportionally to γ^(-μ), with the Landau critical exponent μ= 1/3, the same as found for the mean-field critical behavior with respect to …
Recent theoretical advances offer an exact, first-principle theory of jamming criticality in infinite dimension as well as universal scaling relations between critical exponents in all dimensions. For packings of frictionless spheres near the jamming transition, these advances predict that nontrivial power-law exponents characterize the critical distribution of (i) small inter-particle gaps and (ii) weak contact forces, both of which are crucial for mechanical stability. The scaling of the inter-particle gaps is known to be constant in all spatial dimensions $d$ -- including the physically rel…
We propose that nonequilibrium quantum criticality in open systems at both zero and finite temperatures can be described by a master equation of the Lindblad form. We derive this equation from a system coupling microscopic to a heat bath. It is suggested to be valid generally for studying dynamical quantum criticality and is thus designated as Model Q upon generalizing Hohenberg and Halperin's classification of classical critical dynamics. We find that the dissipation rate in the equation must be included in the scaling forms as an indispensable additional scaling variable in order to correctl…
We study the thermodynamics and critical behavior of su($m|n$) supersymmetric spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type with a chemical potential term. We obtain a closed-form expression for the partition function and deduce a description of the spectrum in terms of the supersymmetric version of Haldane's motifs, which we apply to obtain an analytic expression for the free energy per site in the thermodynamic limit. By studying the low-temperature behavior of the free energy, we characterize the critical behavior of the chains with $1\le m,n\le2$, determining the critical regions and the correspondi…
The density profile and Gibbs adsorption of a near-critical fluid confined between two identical planar walls is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulation and by density functional theory for a Lennard-Jones fluid. By reducing the strength of wall-fluid interactions relative to fluid-fluid interactions we observe a crossover from behaviour characteristic of the normal surface universality class, strong critical adsorption, to behaviour characteristic of a 'neutral' wall. The crossover is reminiscent of that which occurs near the ordinary surface transition in Ising films subject to vanishing …
Much attention has been devoted to water's metastable phase behavior, including polyamorphism (multiple amorphous solid phases), and the hypothesized liquid-liquid transition and associated critical point. However, the possible relationship between these phenomena remains incompletely understood. Using molecular dynamics simulations of the realistic TIP4P/2005 model, we found a striking signature of the liquid-liquid critical point in the structure of water glasses, manifested as a pronounced increase in long-range density fluctuations at pressures proximate to the critical pressure. By contra…
We elucidate a long-standing puzzle about the non-equilibrium universality classes describing self-organized criticality in sandpile models. We show that depinning transitions of linear interfaces in random media and absorbing phase transitions (with a conserved non-diffusive field) are two equivalent languages to describe sandpile criticality. This is so despite the fact that local roughening properties can be radically different in the two pictures, as explained here. Experimental implications of our work as well as promising paths for future theoretical investigations are also discussed.
The quantum Ising chain with the interaction decaying as a power law $1/r^{1+σ}$ of the distance between spins $r$ was investigated numerically. A particular attention was paid to the low-energy spectrum, namely, the single-magnon and two-magnon-bound-state masses, $m_{1,2}$, respectively, in the ordered phase. It is anticipated that for each $σ$, the scaled bound-state mass $m_2/m_1$ should take a universal constant (critical amplitude ratio) in the vicinity of the critical point. In this paper, we calculated the amplitude ratio $m_2/m_1$ with the exact diagonalization method, which yields th…
The quantum $XY$ spin chain with the interactions decaying as a power law $1/r^{1+ σ}$ of the distance between spins $r$ was investigated with the exact diagonalization method. Here, the constituent spin is set to $S=1$, which enables us to incorporate the biquadratic interactions so as to realize the order-disorder transition with the O$(2)$ symmetry maintained. Thereby, in the ordered phase, we resolved the Higgs mass $m_H$ out of the Goldstone-excitation continuum by specifying Higgs-particle's quantum numbers to adequate indices. We then turn to the analysis of the critical amplitude ratio…
We study the emergence of critical dynamics in the steady shear rheology of fluidized soft glassy materials. Within a mesoscale elasto-plastic model accounting for a shear band instability, we show how an additional noise can induce a transition from phase separated to homogeneous flow, accompanied by critical-like fluctuations of the macroscopic shear rate. Both macroscopic quantities and fluctuations exhibit power law behaviors in the vicinity of this transition, consistent with previous experimental findings on vibrated granular media. Altogether, our results suggest a generic scenario for …
The generating functions for the gauge theory observables are often represented in terms of the unitary matrix integrals. In this work, the perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of the generic multi-critical unitary matrix models are studied by adopting the integrable operator formalism, and the multi-critical generalization of the Tracy--Widom distribution in the context of random partitions. We obtain the universal results for the multi-critical model in the weak and strong coupling phases. The free energy of the instanton sector in the weak coupling regime, and the genus expansion of th…
Monte Carlo simulations of the SU(2)-symmetric deconfined critical point action reveal strong violations of scale invariance for the deconfinement transition. We find compelling evidence that the generic runaway renormalization flow of the gauge coupling is to a weak first order transition, similar to the case of U(1)$\times$U(1) symmetry. Our results imply that recent numeric studies of the Nèel antiferromagnet to valence bond solid quantum phase transition in SU(2)-symmetric models were not accurate enough in determining the nature of the transition.
The universality class of thermally diluted Ising systems, in which the realization of the disposition of magnetic atoms and vacancies is taken from the local distribution of spins in the pure original Ising model at criticality, is investigated by finite size scaling techniques using the Monte Carlo method. We find that the critical temperature, the critical exponents and therefore the universality class of these thermally diluted Ising systems depart markedly from the ones of short range correlated disordered systems. Our results agree fairly well with theoretical predictions previously made…
We show that large, slowly driven systems can evolve to a self-organized critical state where long range temporal correlations between bursts or avalanches produce low frequency $1/f^α$ noise. The avalanches can occur instantaneously in the external time scale of the slow drive, and their event statistics are described by power law distributions. A specific example of this behavior is provided by numerical simulations of a deterministic ``sandpile'' model.
A square-lattice hard-core dimer model with links extending beyond nearest-neighbors is studied using a directed-loop Monte Carlo method. An arbitrarily small fraction of next-nearest-neighbor dimers is found to cause deconfinement, whereas a critical state with $r^{-2}$ distance dependence of the dimer-dimer correlations persists in the presence of longer dimers preserving the bipartite graph structure. However, the critical confinement exponent governing the correlation of two test monomers is non-universal. Implications for resonating-valence-bond states are discussed.
We propose that the dynamics of supercooled liquids and the formation of glasses can be understood from the existence of a zero temperature dynamical critical point. To support our proposal, we derive from simple physical assumptions a dynamic field theory for supercooled liquids, which we study using the renormalization group (RG). Its long time behaviour is dominated by a zero temperature critical point, which for dimensions d > 2 belongs to the directed percolation universality class. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm the existence of dynamic scaling behaviour consistent with the RG pr…
We investigate the possibility of an Anderson type transition in the quantum kicked rotor with a smooth potential due to dynamical localization of the wavefunctions. Our results show the typical characteristics of a critical behavior i.e multifractal eigenfunctions and a scale-invariant level-statistics at a critical kicking strength which classically corresponds to a mixed regime. This indicates the existence of a localization to delocalization transition in the quantum kicked rotor. Our study also reveals the possibility of other type of transitions in the quantum kicked rotor, with a kickin…
