We consider the problem of maximizing a homogeneous polynomial on the unit sphere and its hierarchy of Sum-of-Squares (SOS) relaxations. Exploiting the polynomial kernel technique, we obtain a quadratic improvement of the known convergence rate by Reznick and Doherty & Wehner. Specifically, we show that the rate of convergence is no worse than $O(d^2/\ell^2)$ in the regime $\ell \geq Ω(d)$ where $\ell$ is the level of the hierarchy and $d$ the dimension, solving a problem left open in the recent paper by de Klerk & Laurent (arXiv:1904.08828). Importantly, our analysis also works for matrix-valued polynomials on the sphere which has applications in quantum information for the Best Separable State problem. By exploiting the duality relation between sums of squares and the DPS hierarchy in quantum information theory, we show that our result generalizes to nonquadratic polynomials the convergence rates of Navascués, Owari & Plenio.
We study the convergence rate of a hierarchy of upper bounds for polynomial minimization problems, proposed by Lasserre [SIAM J. Optim. 21(3) (2011), pp. 864-885], for the special case when the feasible set is the unit (hyper)sphere. The upper bound at level r of the hierarchy is defined as the minimal expected value of the polynomial over all probability distributions on the sphere, when the probability density function is a sum-of-squares polynomial of degree at most 2r with respect to the surface measure. We show that the exact rate of convergence is Theta(1/r^2), and explore the implicatio…
Chvatal-Gomory (CG) cuts and the Bienstock-Zuckerberg hierarchy capture useful linear programs that the standard bounded degree Lasserre/Sum-of-Squares SOS hierarchy fails to capture. In this paper we present a novel polynomial time SOS hierarchy for 0/1 problems with a custom subspace of high degree polynomials (not the standard subspace of low-degree polynomials). We show that the new SOS hierarchy recovers the Bienstock-Zuckerberg hierarchy. Our result implies a linear program that reproduces the Bienstock-Zuckerberg hierarchy as a polynomial sized, efficiently constructive extended formula…
We consider the generalized moment problem (GMP) over the simplex and the sphere. This is a rich setting and it contains NP-hard problems as special cases, like constructing optimal cubature schemes and rational optimization. Using the Reformulation-Linearization Technique (RLT) and Lasserre-type hierarchies, relaxations of the problem are introduced and analyzed. For our analysis we assume throughout the existence of a dual optimal solution as well as strong duality. For the GMP over the simplex we prove a convergence rate of $O(1/r)$ for a linear programming, RLT-type hierarchy, where $r$ is…
We consider the problem of finding the global optimum of a real-valued complex polynomial on a compact set defined by real-valued complex polynomial inequalities. It reduces to solving a sequence of complex semidefinite programming relaxations that grow tighter and tighter thanks to D'Angelo's and Putinar's Positivstellenstatz discovered in 2008. In other words, the Lasserre hierarchy may be transposed to complex numbers. We propose a method for exploiting sparsity and apply the complex hierarchy to problems with several thousand complex variables. These problems consist of computing optimal p…
We show that (i) any constrained polynomial optimization problem (POP) has an equivalent formulation on a variety contained in an Euclidean sphere and (ii) the resulting semidefinite relaxations in the moment-SOS hierarchy have the constant trace property (CTP) for the involved matrices. We then exploit the CTP to avoid solving the semidefinite relaxations via interior-point methods and rather use ad-hoc spectral methods that minimize the largest eigenvalue of a matrix pencil. Convergence to the optimal value of the semidefinite relaxation is guaranteed. As a result we obtain a hierarchy of no…
In this note, we prove that for homogeneous polynomial optimization on the sphere, if the objective $f$ is generic in the input space, all feasible points satisfying the first order and second order necessary optimality conditions are local minimizers, which addresses an issue raised in the recent work by Lasserre (Optimization Letters, 2021). As a corollary, this implies that Lasserre's hierarchy has finite convergence when $f$ is generic.
The design of minimum-compliance bending-resistant structures with continuous cross-section parameters is a challenging task because of its inherent non-convexity. Our contribution develops a strategy that facilitates computing all guaranteed globally optimal solutions for frame and shell structures under multiple load cases and self-weight. To this purpose, we exploit the fact that the stiffness matrix is usually a polynomial function of design variables, allowing us to build an equivalent non-linear semidefinite programming formulation over a semi-algebraic feasible set. This formulation is …
We use moment techniques to construct a converging hierarchy of optimization problems to lower bound the ground state energy of interacting particle systems. We approximate (from below) the infinite dimensional optimization problems in this hierarchy by block diagonal semidefinite programs. For this we develop the necessary harmonic analysis for spaces consisting of subsets of another space, and we develop symmetric sum-of-squares techniques. We numerically compute the second step of our hierarchy for Riesz s-energy problems with five particles on the 2-dimensional unit sphere, where the s=1 c…
We consider the sum-of-squares hierarchy of approximations for the problem of minimizing a polynomial $f$ over the boolean hypercube $\mathbb{B}^{n}=\{0,1\}^n$. This hierarchy provides for each integer $r \in \mathbb{N}$ a lower bound $f_{(r)}$ on the minimum $f_{\min}$ of $f$, given by the largest scalar $λ$ for which the polynomial $f - λ$ is a sum-of-squares on $\mathbb{B}^{n}$ with degree at most $2r$. We analyze the quality of these bounds by estimating the worst-case error $f_{\min} - f_{(r)}$ in terms of the least roots of the Krawtchouk polynomials. As a consequence, for fixed $t \in […
This paper is concerned with minimizing a sum of rational functions over a compact set of high-dimension. Our approach relies on the second Lasserre's hierarchy (also known as the upper bounds hierarchy) formulated on the pushforward measure in order to work in a space of smaller dimension. We show that in the general case the minimum can be approximated as closely as desired from above with a hierarchy of semidefinite programs problems or, in the particular case of a single fraction, with a hierarchy of generalized eigenvalue problems. We numerically illustrate the potential of using the push…
We exhibit a convex polynomial optimization problem for which the diagonally-dominant sum-of-squares (DSOS) and the scaled diagonally-dominant sum-of-squares (SDSOS) hierarchies, based on linear programming and second-order conic programming respectively, do not converge to the global infimum. The same goes for the r-DSOS and r-SDSOS hierarchies. This refutes the claim in the literature according to which the DSOS and SDSOS hierarchies can solve any polynomial optimization problem to arbitrary accuracy. In contrast, the Lasserre hierarchy based on semidefinite programming yields the global inf…
Disjointly constrained multilinear programming concerns the problem of maximizing a multilinear function on the product of finitely many disjoint polyhedra. While maximizing a linear function on a polytope (linear programming) is known to be solvable in polynomial time, even bilinear programming is NP-hard. Based on a reformulation of the problem in terms of sum-of-squares polynomials, we study a hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations to the problem. It follows from the general theory that the sequence of optimal values converges asymptotically to the optimal value of the multilinear program. W…
The moment sum of squares (moment-SOS) hierarchy produces sequences of upper and lower bounds on functionals of the exit time solution of a polynomial stochastic differential equation with polynomial constraints, at the price of solving semidefinite optimization problems of increasing size. In this note we use standard results from elliptic partial differential equation analysis to prove convergence of the bounds produced by the hierarchy. We also use elementary convex analysis to describe a super- and sub-solution interpretation dual to a linear formulation on occupation measures. The practic…
Given an $\mathcal{H}$-polytope $P$ and a $\mathcal{V}$-polytope $Q$, the decision problem whether $P$ is contained in $Q$ is co-NP-complete. This hardness remains if $P$ is restricted to be a standard cube and $Q$ is restricted to be the affine image of a cross polytope. While this hardness classification by Freund and Orlin dates back to 1985, for general dimension there seems to be only limited progress on that problem so far. Based on a formulation of the problem in terms of a bilinear feasibility problem, we study sum of squares certificates to decide the containment problem. These certif…
We present a hierarchy of semidefinite programs (SDPs) for the problem of fitting a shape-constrained (multivariate) polynomial to noisy evaluations of an unknown shape-constrained function. These shape constraints include convexity or monotonicity over a box. We show that polynomial functions that are optimal to any fixed level of our hierarchy form a consistent estimator of the underlying shape-constrained function. As a byproduct of the proof, we establish that sum-of-squares-convex polynomials are dense in the set of polynomials that are convex over an arbitrary box. A similar sum of squar…

We consider a hierarchy of upper approximations for the minimization of a polynomial $f$ over a compact set $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ proposed recently by Lasserre (arXiv:1907.097784, 2019). This hierarchy relies on using the push-forward measure of the Lebesgue measure on $K$ by the polynomial $f$ and involves univariate sums of squares of polynomials with growing degrees $2r$. Hence it is weaker, but cheaper to compute, than an earlier hierarchy by Lasserre (SIAM Journal on Optimization 21(3), 864--885, 2011), which uses multivariate sums of squares. We show that this new hierarchy converge…
We introduce a new framework for unifying and systematizing the performance analysis of first-order black-box optimization algorithms for unconstrained convex minimization. The low-cost iteration complexity enjoyed by first-order algorithms renders them particularly relevant for applications in machine learning and large-scale data analysis. Relying on sum-of-squares (SOS) optimization, we introduce a hierarchy of semidefinite programs that give increasingly better convergence bounds for higher levels of the hierarchy. Alluding to the power of the SOS hierarchy, we show that the (dual of the) …
This work derives upper bounds on the convergence rate of the moment-sum-of-squares hierarchy with correlative sparsity for global minimization of polynomials on compact basic semialgebraic sets. The main conclusion is that both sparse hierarchies based on the Schmüdgen and Putinar Positivstellensätze enjoy a polynomial rate of convergence that depends on the size of the largest clique in the sparsity graph but not on the ambient dimension. Interestingly, the sparse bounds outperform the best currently available bounds for the dense hierarchy when the maximum clique size is sufficiently small …
Every convex homogeneous polynomial (or form) is nonnegative. Blekherman has shown that there exist convex forms that are not sums of squares via a nonconstructive argument. We provide an explicit example of a convex form of degree four in 272 variables that is not a sum of squares. The form is related to the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality over the octonions. The proof uses symmetry reduction together with the fact (due to Blekherman) that forms of even degree, that are near-constant on the unit sphere, are convex. Using this same connection, we obtain improved bounds on the approximation quality a…
