In this document, technical details of the upgrade plan of the J-PARC neutrino beamline for the extension of the T2K experiment are described. T2K has proposed to accumulate data corresponding to $2\times{}10^{22}$ protons-on-target in the next decade, aiming at an initial observation of CP violation with $3σ$ or higher significance in the case of maximal CP violation. Methods to increase the neutrino beam intensity, which are necessary to achieve the proposed data increase, are described.
J-PARC neutrino beamline has been operated since 2009. Until May 2018, the maximum beam power achieved was ~500 kW. In future, the beam power will be upgraded to 1.3 MW. After the stable operation in late 2020s, we can accumulate ~30 x 10^20 POT data per year. It is almost the same number as total POT accumulated in recent 10 years. The upgrade plan of the Main Ring as well as the neutrino beamline is reported.
Precise neutrino--nucleus interaction measurements in the sub-multi GeV region are important to reduce the systematic uncertainty in future neutrino oscillation experiments. Furthermore, the excess of ${ν_e}$ interactions, as a possible interpretation of the existence of a sterile neutrino has been observed in such an energy region. The nuclear emulsion technique can measure all the final state particles with low energy threshold for a variety of targets (Fe, C, H${_2}$O, and so on). Its sub-$μ$m position resolution allows measurements of the ${ν_e}$ cross-section with good electron/gamma sepa…
Upgrades to the J-PARC accelerators and the neutrino experimental facility are of vital importance to the Tokai to Hyper-Kamiokande project (T2HK), which aims to explore CP asymmetry by the $ν_e$ appearance. In this talk I present overview of the T2HK project, current status of the beam operation at J-PARC, and prospect to realize the rated 750 kW operation in coming years.
As long-baseline neutrino experiments enter the precision era, the difficulties associated with understanding neutrino interaction cross sections on atomic nuclei are expected to limit experimental sensitivities to oscillation parameters. In particular, the ability to relate experimental observables to neutrino energy in previous experiments has relied solely on theoretical models of neutrino-nucleus interactions, which currently suffer from very large theoretical uncertainties. By observing charged current $ν_μ$ interactions over a continuous range of off-axis angles from 1 to 4 degrees, the …
In order to explore CP asymmetry in the lepton sector, a power upgrade to the neutrino experimental facility at J-PARC is a key requirement for both the Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment and a future project with Hyper-Kamiokande. Based on five years of operational experience, the facility has achieved stable operation with 230 kW beam power without significant problems on the beam-line apparatus. After successful maintenance works in 2013-2014 to replace all electromagnetic horns and a production target, the facility is now ready to accomodate a 750-kW-rated…
The SRS is a 2GeV synchrotron light source with 14 beamlines serving approximately 34 experimental stations. Control of the major elements of the beamlines (vacuum pumps, gauges, valves and radiation stops) is the responsibility of the main SRS Control System. As part of the long-term upgrade plan for the SRS Control System a large programme of work has been undertaken to modernize beamline control. This work included: development of Linux based PC front end computers to interface to the existing CAMAC I/O system, replacement of the user interface by graphical synoptic diagrams running on Wind…
"Neutron Optics and Physics (NOP/ BL05)" at MLF in J-PARC is a beamline for studies of fundamental physics. The beamline is divided into three branches so that different experiments can be performed in parallel. These beam branches are being used to develop a variety of new projects. We are developing an experimental project to measure the neutron lifetime with total uncertainty of 1 s (0.1%). The neutron lifetime is an important parameter in elementary particle and astrophysics. Thus far, the neutron lifetime has been measured by several groups; however, different values are obtained from dif…
The monochromator beamline at the FLASH facility at DESY is the worldwide first XUV monochromator beamline operational on a free electron laser (FEL)source. Being a single-user machine, FLASH demands a high flexibility of the instrumentation to fulfil the needs of diverse experiments performed by a multidisciplinary user community. Thus, the beamline has not only been used for high-resolution spectroscopy that it was originally designed for, but also for pump-probe experiments controlling the temporal-spectral properties at moderate resolution, and as a filter for high harmonics of the FEL at …
At the beginning of 2010, we presented at the J-PARC PAC an R$&$D program towards large (100 kton scale) liquid argon TPCs, suitable to investigate, in conjunction with the J-PARC neutrino beam, the possibility of CP violation in the neutrino sector and to search for nucleon decay. As a first step we proposed a test experiment to identify and measure charged kaons, including their decays, in liquid argon. The detector, a 250L LAr TPC, is exposed to charged kaons, in a momentum range of 540-800 MeV/c, in the K1.1BR beamline of the J-PARC slow extraction facility. This is especially important to…
Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) aims at a MW-class proton accelerator facility. One of the promising solutions for increasing the beam power of the Main Ring (MR) is converters of the main magnets with new ones for this upgrade. We have a plan to replace and develop the power converters of main magnets for this upgrade. According to develop the new power converter. We have developed a new control system for the new power converters. This control system consists of four parts : the current measuring device, the feedback control system, the gate pulse generator and the slow co…
The T2K neutrino oscillation experiment established the $ν_μ\rightarrow ν_e$ appearance with only $10\%$ of the original beam request of $7.8\times10^{21}$ $30$ GeV protons on target (POT). In view of the J-PARC program of upgrades of the beam intensity, the T2K-II proposal for $20\times10^{21}$ POT aimed at establishing CP violation at $3σ$ level for a significant fraction of the possible $δ_{CP}$ values. The Hyper-K proposal consists of a further increase by a factor $10$ of the far detector mass. Facing the potential increase of statistics by two orders of magnitude, it is of great importan…
In Japan, as the first experiment utilizes J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) neutrino facility, T2K (Tokai to Kamioka Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment) starts operation. T2K is supposed to give critical information, which guides the future direction of the neutrino physics. Possible new generation discovery experiment based on T2K outcome is discussed. Especially, description of J-PARC neutrino beam upgrade plan and discussion on far detector options to maximize potential of the research are focused. European participation and CERN commitment on Japanese accelerator based neu…
The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) project will build a beamline located at Fermilab to create and aim an intense neutrino beam of appropriate energy range toward the DUNE detectors at the SURF facility in Lead, South Dakota. Neutrino production starts in the Target Station, which consists of a solid target, magnetic focusing horns, and the associated sub-systems and shielding infrastructure. Protons hit the target producing mesons which are then focused by the horns into a helium-filled decay pipe where they decay into muons and neutrinos. The target and horns are encased in actively …
ND280 is a near detector of the T2K experiment which is located in the J-PARC accelerator complex in Japan. After a decade of fruitful data-taking, ND280 is scheduled for upgrade. The time-of-flight (ToF) detector, which is described in this article, is one of three new detectors that will be installed in the basket of ND280. The ToF detector has a modular structure. Each module represents an array of 20 plastic scintillator bars which are stacked in a plane of 2.4 x 2.2 m2 area. Six modules of similar construction will be assembled in a cube, thus providing an almost 4pi enclosure for an acti…
Plastic scintillator detectors have been extensively used in particle physics experiments for decades. A large-scale detector is typically arranged as an array of staggered long bars which provide a fast trigger signal and/or particle identification via time-of-flight measurements. Scintillation light is collected by photosensors coupled to both ends of every bar. In this article, we present our study on a direct replacement of commonly used vacuum photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) by arrays of large-area silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). An SiPM array which is directly coupled to the scintillator …

A novel scintillator detector, the SuperFGD, has been selected as the main neutrino target for an upgrade of the T2K experiment ND280 near detector. The detector design will allow nearly 4π coverage for neutrino interactions at the near detector and will provide lower energy thresholds, significantly reducing systematic errors for the experiment. The SuperFGD is made of optically-isolated scintillator cubes of size 10x10x10 mm^3, providing the required spatial and energy resolution to reduce systematic uncertainties for future T2K runs. The SuperFGD for T2K will have close to two million cubes…
A technical note is given regarding our previous laboratory plasma-astrophysical studies [C.-S. Jao et al., High Energy Density Physics 32, 31-43 (2019) and Y. Chen et al., Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res., Sect. A 903, 119 (2018)]. In this note, an upgraded accelerator beamline design is proposed based on a feasible experimental setup in a realistic laboratory environment. The improved design aims to provide milliampere (mA) mega-electron-volt (MeV) quasi-continuous (cw) electron beams for plasma-astrophysical applications. Such a design utilizes a so-called mixed-guiding-field magnetic syst…
The T2K experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its main goal is to measure the last unknown lepton sector mixing angle θ_{13} by observing ν_e appearance in a ν_μ beam. It also aims to make a precision measurement of the known oscillation parameters, Δm^{2}_{23} and sin^{2} 2θ_{23}, via ν_μ disappearance studies. Other goals of the experiment include various neutrino cross section measurements and sterile neutrino searches. The experiment uses an intense proton beam generated by the J-PARC accelerator in Tokai, Japan, and is composed of a neutrino beamline, a near detec…
Recent measurements by the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment indicate that CP violation in neutrino mixing may be observed in the future by long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We propose an extension to the currently approved T2K running from $7.8\times 10^{21}~\mbox{POT}$ to $20\times 10^{21}~\mbox{POT}$, aiming at initial observation of CP violation with 3$\,σ$ or higher significance for the case of maximum CP violation. The program also contains a measurement of mixing parameters, $θ_{23}$ and $Δm^2_{32}$, with a precision of 1.7$^\circ$ or better and 1%, respectively. With ac…
On the strength of a double Nobel prize winning experiment (Super)Kamiokande and an extremely successful long baseline neutrino programme, the third generation Water Cherenkov detector, Hyper-Kamiokande, is being developed by an international collaboration as a leading worldwide experiment based in Japan. The Hyper-Kamiokande detector will be hosted in the Tochibora mine, about 295 km away from the J-PARC proton accelerator research complex in Tokai, Japan. The currently existing accelerator will be steadily upgraded to reach a MW beam by the start of the experiment. A suite of near detectors …
