We provide several applications of the minimal model program to the local and global study of co-rank one foliations on threefolds. Locally, we prove a singular variant of Malgrange's theorem, a classification of terminal foliation singularities and the existence of separatrices for log canonical singularities. Globally, we prove termination of flips, a connectedness theorem on lc centres, a non-vanshing theorem and some hyperbolicity properties of foliations.
In his work on birational classification of foliations on projective surfaces, Brunella showed that every regular foliation on a rational surface is algebraically integrable with rational leaves. This led Touzet to conjecture that every regular foliation on a rationally connected manifold is algebraically integrable with rationally connected leaves. Druel proved this conjecture for the case of weak Fano manifolds. In this paper, we extend this result showing that Touzet's conjecture is true for codimension one foliations on threefolds with nef anti-canonical bundle.
We aim to classify codimension 1 foliations $\mathscr{F}$ with canonical singularities and $ν(K_{\mathscr{F}}) < 3$ on threefolds of general type. We prove a classification result for foliations satisfying these conditions and having non-trivial algebraic part. We also describe purely transcendental foliations $\mathscr{F}$ with the canonical class $K_{\mathscr{F}}$ being not big on manifolds of general type in any dimension, assuming that $\mathscr{F}$ is non-singular in codimension $2$.
We study the conormal sheaves and singular schemes of 1-dimensional foliations on smooth projective varieties $X$ of dimension 3 and Picard rank 1. We prove that if the singular scheme has dimension 0, then the conormal sheaf is $μ$-stable whenever the tangent bundle $TX$ is stable, and apply this fact to the characterization of certain irreducible components of the moduli space of rank 2 reflexive sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^3$ and on a smooth quadric hypersurface $Q_3\subset\mathbb{P}^4$. Finally, we give a classification of local complete intersection foliations, that is, foliations with locally…
We develop some basic results in a higher dimensional foliated Mori theory, and show how these results can be used to prove a structure theorem for the Kleiman-Mori cone of curves in terms of the numerical properties of $K_{\mathcal{F}}$ for rank 2 foliations on threefolds. We also make progress toward realizing a minimal model program for rank 2 foliations on threefolds.
In this article, we give the structure of codimension one foliations with canonical singularities and numerically trivial canonical class on varieties with klt singularities. Building on recent works of Spicer, Cascini - Spicer and Spicer - Svaldi, we then describe the birational geometry of rank two foliations with canonical singularities and canonical class of numerical dimension zero on complex projective threefolds.
Given a three-dimensional projective log canonical pair over a perfect field of characteristic larger than five, there exists a minimal model program that terminates after finitely many steps.
We show the validity of the relative dlt MMP over Q-factorial threefolds in all characteristics p>0. As a corollary, we generalise many recent results to low characteristics including: $W\mathcal{O}$-rationality of klt singularities, inversion of adjunction, and normality of divisorial centres up to a universal homeomorphism.
This is the second of a series of papers studying real algebraic threefolds using the minimal model program. The main result is the following. Let $X$ be a smooth projective real algebraic 3-fold. Assume that the set of real points is an orientable 3-manifold (this assumption can be weakened considerably). Then there is a fairly simple description on how the topology of real points changes under the minimal model program. The first application is to study the topology of real projective varieties which are birational to projective 3-space (Nash conjecture). The second application is a factoriz…
We establish the Minimal Model Program for arithmetic threefolds whose residue characteristics are greater than five. In doing this, we generalize the theory of global $F$-regularity to mixed characteristic and identify certain stable sections of adjoint line bundles. Finally, by passing to graded rings, we generalize a special case of Fujita's conjecture to mixed characteristic.
We provide a detailed proof of the validity of the Minimal Model Program for threefolds over excellent Dedekind separated schemes whose residue fields do not have characteristic 2 or 3.
In this paper, we study the minimal model theory for threefolds in mixed characteristic. As a generalization of a result of Kawamata, we show that the MMP holds for strictly semi-stable schemes over an excellent Dedekind scheme $V$ of relative dimension two without any assumption on the residue characteristics of $V$. We also prove that we can run a $(K_{X/V}+Δ)$-MMP over $Z$, where $π\colon X \to Z$ is a projective birational morphism of $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial quasi-projective $V$-schemes and $(X,Δ)$ is a three-dimensional dlt pair with $\mathrm{Exc}(π) \subset \lfloor Δ\rfloor $.
We show that many classical results of the minimal model programme do not hold over an algebraically closed field of characteristic two. Indeed, we construct a three dimensional plt pair whose codimension one part is not normal, a three dimensional klt singularity which is not rational nor Cohen-Macaulay, and a klt Fano threefold with non-trivial intermediate cohomology.
This is the first of a series of papers studying real algebraic threefolds using the minimal model program. The main results are outlined in Part II. The present part I. contains the necessary preliminary work concerning terminal singularities. First I give standard forms for 3-dimensional terminal singularities over arbitrary fields. This is then used to develop a fairly complete topological classification over the reals.
We describe recent progress in a program to understand the classification of three-dimensional Fano varieties with $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial terminal singularities using mirror symmetry. As part of this we give an improved and more conceptual understanding of Laurent inversion, a technique that sometimes allows one to construct a Fano variety $X$ directly from a Laurent polynomial $f$ that corresponds to it under mirror symmetry.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective threefold. We prove that, among the process of minimal model program, the variance of the third Betti number can be bounded by some integer depends only on the Picard number of $X$.
We prove the boundedness theorem for Fano threefolds with log-terminal singularities of any fixed index. This is an improvement of our earlier result, where we required additionally that the variety is Q-factorial, with Picard number 1. The new ideas of the paper include the following. 1. Using Alexeev Minimal Model program with suitable boundary to find horizontal extremal contractions. 2. Using Kollár's effective Base Point Freeness theorem. 3. Using Kawamata's result on the length of extremal curves with suitable boundary to avoid gluing curves in some cases.
We prove the K-moduli space of cubic threefolds is identical to their GIT moduli. More precisely, the K-(semi,poly)-stability of cubic threefolds coincide to the corresponding GIT stabilities, which could be explicitly calculated. In particular, this implies that all smooth cubic threefolds admit Kähler-Einstein metric as well as provides a precise list of singular KE ones. To achieve this, our main new contribution is an estimate in dimension three of the volumes of kawamata log terminal singularities introduced by Chi Li. This is obtained via a detailed study of the classification of three d…
The paper is joined with arXiv:0911.5428 and improved. We prove that Landau-Ginzburg models for all 17 smooth Fano threefolds with Picard rank 1 can be represented as Laurent polynomials in 3 variables exhibiting them case by case. We check that these Landau-Ginzburg models can be compactified to open Calabi-Yau varieties. In the spirit of L. Katzarkov's program we prove that numbers of irreducible components of the central fibers of compactifications of these pencils are dimensions of intermediate Jacobians of Fano varieties plus 1. In particular these numbers do not depend on compactificatio…
In this note we initiate a program to obtain global descriptions of Calabi-Yau moduli spaces, to calculate their Picard group, and to identify within that group the Hodge line bundle, and the closely-related Bagger-Witten line bundle. We do this here for several Calabi-Yau's obtained in [DW09] as crepant resolutions of the orbifold quotient of the product of three elliptic curves. In particular we verify in these cases a recent claim of [GHKSST16] by noting that a power of the Hodge line bundle is trivial -- even though in most of these cases the Picard group is infinite.
We show the validity of two special cases of the four-dimensional Minimal Model Program in characteristic $p>5$: for contractions to $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial fourfolds and in families over curves ("semi-stable mmp"). We also provide their mixed characteristic analogues. As a corollary, we show that liftability of positive characteristic threefolds is stable under the minimal model program, and that liftability of three-dimensional Calabi-Yau varieties is a birational invariant. Our results are partially contingent upon the existence of log resolutions.
We construct a family of fibered threefolds $X_m \to (S , Δ)$ such that $X_m$ has no étale cover that dominates a variety of general type but it dominates the orbifold $(S,Δ)$ of general type. Following Campana, the threefolds $X_m$ are called \emph{weakly special} but not \emph{special}. The Weak Specialness Conjecture predicts that a weakly special variety defined over a number field has a potentially dense set of rational points. We prove that if $m$ is big enough the threefolds $X_m$ present behaviours that contradict the function field and analytic analogue of the Weak Specialness Conject…
We use the theory of foliations to study the relative canonical divisor of a normalized inseparable base-change. Our main technical theorem states that it is linearly equivalent to a divisor with positive integer coefficients divisible by $p-1$. We deduce many consequences about the fibrations of the minimal model program: for example the general fibers of terminal $3$-fold Mori fiber spaces are normal in characteristic $p\geq 5$ and smooth in characteristic $p\geq 11$.
Using the $\sharp$-minimal model program of uniruled varieties we show that for any pair $(X, \H)$ consisting of a reduced and irreducible variety $X$ of dimension $k \geq 3$ and a globally generated big line bundle $\H$ on $X$ with $d:= \H^k$ and $n:= h^0(X, \H)-1$ such that $d<2(n-k)-4$, then $X$ is uniruled of $\H$-degree one, except if $(k,d,n)=(3,27,19)$ and a ${\sharp}$-minimal model of $(X, \H)$ is $(\PP^3,Ø_{\PP^3}(3))$. We also show that the bound is optimal for threefolds.
The mathematical physicists Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa (BCOV) proposed, in a seminal article from '94, a conjecture extending genus zero mirror symmetry to higher genera. With a view towards a refined formulation of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem, we offer a mathematical description of the BCOV conjecture at genus one. As an application of the arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem of Gillet-Soulé and of our previous results on the BCOV invariant, we establish this conjecture for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in projective spaces. Our contribution takes place on the $B$-side, and together with …
