We address the issue of numerical convergence in cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations using a suite of runs drawn from the EAGLE project. Our simulations adopt subgrid models that produce realistic galaxy populations at a fiducial mass and force resolution, but systematically vary the latter in order to study their impact on galaxy properties. We provide several analytic criteria that help guide the selection of gravitational softening for hydrodynamical simulations, and present results from runs that both adhere to and deviate from them. Unlike dark matter-only simulations, hydrodynamical simulations exhibit a strong sensitivity to gravitational softening, and care must be taken when selecting numerical parameters. Our results--which focus mainly on star formation histories, galaxy stellar mass functions and sizes--illuminate three main considerations. First, softening imposes a minimum resolved escape speed, $v_ε$, due to the binding energy between gas particles. Runs that adopt such small softening lengths that $v_ε\gt 10\,{\rm km s^{-1}}$ (the sound speed in ionised $\sim 10^4\,{\rm K}$ gas) suffer from reduced effects of photo-heating. Second, feedback from stars or active galactic nuclei may suffer from numerical over-cooling if the gravitational softening length is chosen below a critical value, $ε_{\rm eFB}$. Third, we note that small softening lengths exacerbate the segregation of stars and dark matter particles in halo centres, often leading to the counter-intuitive result that galaxy sizes {\em increase} as softening is reduced. The structure of dark matter haloes in hydrodynamical runs respond to softening in a way that reflects the sensitivity of their galaxy populations to numerical parameters.
We perform cosmological simulations of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at redshift z ~ 3 using the numerical gravity-hydrodynamics codes GADGET-3 and Enzo for the purpose of modelling the gaseous environments of galaxies. We identify haloes in the simulations using three different algorithms. Different rank orderings of the haloes by mass result, introducing a limiting factor in identifying haloes with observed galaxies. We also compare the physical properties of the gas between the two codes, focussing primarily on the gas outside the virial radius, motivated by recent HI absorption measuremen…
We investigate the variations in galaxy occupancy of the dark matter haloes with the large-scale environment and halo formation time, using two state-of-the-art hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, EAGLE and Illustris. For both simulations, we use three galaxy samples with a fixed number density ranked by stellar mass. For these samples we find that low-mass haloes in the most dense environments are more likely to host a central galaxy than those in the least dense environments. When splitting the halo population by formation time, these relations are stronger. Hence, at a fixed low halo m…
An analytic galaxy model with $ρ\sim r^{-1}$ at small radii and $ρ\sim r^{-3.5}$ at large radii is presented. The asymptotic density fall-off is slower than the Hernquist model, but faster than the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile for dark matter haloes, and so in accord with recent evidence from cosmological simulations. The model provides the zeroth-order term in a biorthornomal basis function expansion, meaning that axisymmetric, triaxial and lopsided distortions can easily be added (much like the Hernquist model itself which is the zeroth-order term of the Hernquist-Ostriker expansion). T…
The dwarf satellite galaxies of the Milky Way Crater II and Antlia II have uncommonly low dynamical mass densities, due to their large size and low velocity dispersion. Previous work have failed to identify formation scenarios within the $Λ$CDM framework and have invoked cored dark matter haloes, processed by tides. I show that the tidal evolution of $Λ$CDM NFW haloes is richer than previously recognised: tidal heating causes the innermost regions of haloes that fall short of the mass-concentration relation to expand significantly, resulting in the formation of giant, kinematically cold satell…
We present cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of the formation of dwarf galaxies in a representative sample of haloes extracted from the Millennium-II Simulation. Our six haloes have a z = 0 mass of ~10^10 solar masses and show different mass assembly histories which are reflected in different star formation histories. We find final stellar masses in the range 5 x 10^7 - 10^8 solar masses, consistent with other published simulations of galaxy formation in similar mass haloes. Our final objects have structures and stellar populations consistent with dwarf elliptical and dwarf irregular gal…

We use cosmological hydrodynamical galaxy formation simulations from the NIHAO project to investigate the response of cold dark matter (CDM) haloes to baryonic processes. Previous work has shown that the halo response is primarily a function of the ratio between galaxy stellar mass and total virial mass, and the density threshold above which gas is eligible to form stars, $n [{\rm cm}^{-3}]$. At low $n$ all simulations in the literature agree that dwarf galaxy haloes are cuspy, but at high $n\ge 100$ there is no consensus. We trace halo contraction in dwarf galaxies with $n\ge 100$ reported in…
We have examined the resolved stellar populations at large galactocentric distances along the minor axis (from 10 kpc up to between 40 and 75 kpc), with limited major axis coverage, of six nearby highly-inclined Milky Way-mass disc galaxies using HST data from the GHOSTS survey. We select red giant branch stars to derive stellar halo density profiles. The projected minor axis density profiles can be approximated by power laws with projected slopes of between $-2$ and $-3.7$ and a diversity of stellar halo masses of $1-6\times 10^{9}M_{\odot}$, or $2-14\%$ of the total galaxy stellar masses. Th…
We introduce a mass dependent density profile to describe the distribution of dark matter within galaxies, which takes into account the stellar-to-halo mass dependence of the response of dark matter to baryonic processes. The study is based on the analysis of hydrodynamically simulated galaxies from dwarf to Milky Way mass, drawn from the MaGICC project, which have been shown to match a wide range of disk scaling relationships. We find that the best fit parameters of a generic double power-law density profile vary in a systematic manner that depends on the stellar-to-halo mass ratio of each ga…
We investigate the properties of Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) using high-resolution and large box-size cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of a LambdaCDM model. The numerical code used is a modification of GADGET-2 with a self consistent implementation of the metal enrichment mechanism (Tornatore et al. 2007). We explore the numerical convergence of some relevant physical quantities and we vary the parameters describing the properties of galactic winds; the initial stellar mass function; the linear dark matter power spectrum and the metal enrichment pattern of the IGM (Intergalactic M…
We use N-body simulations of dark matter haloes in cold dark matter (CDM) and a large set of different warm dark matter (WDM) cosmologies to demonstrate that the spherically averaged density profile of dark matter haloes has a shape that depends on the power spectrum of matter perturbations. Density profiles are steeper in WDM but become shallower at scales less than one percent of the virial radius. Virialization isotropizes the velocity dispersion in the inner regions of the halo but does not erase the memory of the initial conditions in phase space. The location of the observed deviations f…
We present a suite of baryonic cosmological zoom-in simulations of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) haloes within the ``Feedback In Realistic Environment'' (FIRE) project. The three simulated haloes have virial masses of $\sim 10^{12}\, \text{M}_\odot$ at $z=0$, and we study velocity-independent self-interaction cross sections of 1 and 10 ${\rm cm^2 \, g^{-1}}$. We study star formation rates and the shape of dark matter density profiles of the parent haloes in both cold dark matter (CDM) and SIDM models. Galaxies formed in the SIDM haloes have higher star formation rates at $z\leq1$, result…
We study the evolving environment dependence of mass accretion by dark haloes in simulations of cold and warm dark matter (CDM and WDM) cosmologies. The latter allows us to probe the nature of halo growth at scales below the WDM half-mode mass, which form an extreme regime of nonlinear collisionless dynamics and offer an excellent test-bed for ideas relating to hierarchical growth. As environmental proxies, we use the local halo-centric matter density $δ$ and tidal anisotropy $α$, as well as large-scale halo bias $b_1$. Our analysis, while reproducing known trends for environment-dependent acc…
We compare predictions of large-scale cosmological hydrodynamical simulations for neutral hydrogen absorption signatures in the vicinity of 1e11 - 1e12.5 MSun haloes with observational measurements. Two different hydrodynamical techniques and a variety of prescriptions for gas removal in high density regions are examined. Star formation and wind feedback play only secondary roles in the HI absorption signatures outside the virial radius, but play important roles within. Accordingly, we identify three distinct gaseous regions around a halo: the virialized region, the mesogalactic medium outside…
A defining prediction of the cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological model is the existence of a very large population of low mass haloes, down to planet-size masses. However, their fate as they are accreted onto haloes many orders of magnitude more massive remains fundamentally uncertain. A number of numerical explorations have found subhaloes to be very resilient to tides, but resolution limits make it difficult to explore tidal evolution at arbitrarily low masses. What are the structural properties of heavily stripped subhaloes? Do tidal effects destroy low-mass CDM subhaloes? Here we focus on …
Theoretical $Λ$CDM cosmological models predict a much larger number of low mass dark matter haloes than has been observed in the Local Group of galaxies. One possible explanation is the increased difficulty of detecting these haloes if most of the visible matter is lost at early evolutionary phases through galactic winds. In this work we study the current models of triggering galactic winds in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) from supernovae, and study, based on 3D hydrodynamic numerical simulations, the correlation of the mass loss rates and important physical parameters as the dark matter ha…
Small distortions in the images of Einstein rings or giant arcs offer the exciting prospect of detecting dark matter haloes or subhaloes of mass below $10^9$M$_{\odot}$, most of which are too small to have made a visible galaxy. A very large number of such haloes are predicted to exist in the cold dark matter model of cosmogony; in contrast other models, such as warm dark matter, predict no haloes below a mass of this order which depends on the properties of the warm dark matter particle. Attempting to detect these small perturbers could therefore discriminate between different kinds of dark m…
We use ~100 cosmological galaxy formation zoom-in simulations using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics code {\sc gasoline} to study the effect of baryonic processes on the mass profiles of cold dark matter haloes. The haloes in our study range from dwarf (M_{200}~10^{10}Msun) to Milky Way (M_{200}~10^{12}Msun) masses. Our simulations exhibit a wide range of halo responses, primarily varying with mass, from expansion to contraction, with up to factor ~10 changes in the enclosed dark matter mass at one per cent of the virial radius. Confirming previous studies, the halo response is correlated w…
The leading contenders for the seeds of $z > 6$ quasars are direct-collapse black holes (DCBHs) forming in atomically-cooled halos at $z \sim$ 20. However, the Lyman-Werner (LW) UV background required to form DCBHs of 10$^5$ \Ms\ are extreme, about 10$^4$ J$_{21}$, and may have been rare in the early universe. Here we investigate the formation of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) under moderate LW backgrounds of 100 and 500 J$_{21}$ that were much more common at early times. These backgrounds allow halos to grow to a few 10$^6$ - 10$^7$ \Ms\ and virial temperatures of nearly 10$^4$ K befor…
We use the hydrodynamic, cosmological EAGLE simulations to investigate how hot gas in haloes condenses to form and grow galaxies. We select haloes from the simulations that are actively cooling and study the temperature, distribution, and metallicity of their hot, cold, and transitioning `cooling' gas, placing these in context of semi-analytic models. Our selection criteria lead us to focus on Milky Way-like haloes. We find the hot-gas density profiles of the haloes form a progressively stronger core over time, the nature of which can be captured by a beta profile that has a simple dependence …
We investigate the alignment of galaxies and haloes relative to cosmic web filaments using the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulation. We identify filaments by applying the NEXUS+ method to the mass distribution and the Bisous formalism to the galaxy distribution. Both web finders return similar filamentary structures that are well aligned and that contain comparable galaxy populations. EAGLE haloes have an identical spin alignment with filaments as their counterparts in dark matter only simulations: a complex mass dependent trend with low mass haloes spinning preferentially parallel to and high mass…
The baryonic discs of galaxies are believed to alter the shapes of the dark matter haloes in which they reside. We perform a set of hydrodynamical N-body simulations of disc galaxies with triaxial dark matter haloes, using elliptical discs with a gaseous component as initial conditions. We explore models of different halo triaxiality and also of different initial gas fractions, which allows us to evaluate how each affects the formations of the bar. Due to star formation, models of all halo shapes and of all initial gas fractions reach approximately the same gas content at the end of the simula…
We study shapes and alignments of 45 dark matter (DM) haloes and their brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) using a sample of 39 massive clusters from Hubble Frontier Field (HFF), Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH), and Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS). We measure shapes of the DM haloes by strong gravitational lensing, whereas BCG shapes are derived from their light profiles in Hubble Space Telescope images. Our measurements from a large sample of massive clusters presented here provide new constraints on dark matter and cluster astrophysics. We find that DM hal…
We make use of a high-resolution zoom-in hydrodynamical simulation to investigate the impact of filaments on galaxy formation in their residing dark matter haloes. A method based on the density field and the Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm is developed to identify filaments. We show that cold and dense gas preprocessed by dark matter filaments can be further accreted into residing individual low-mass haloes in directions along the filaments. Consequently, comparing with field haloes, gas accretion is very anisotropic for filament haloes. About 30 percent of the accreted gas of a residing filament ha…
The growth-rate and the internal dynamics of galaxy-sized dark-matter haloes depend on their location within the cosmic web. Haloes that sit at the nodes grow in mass till the present time and are dominated by radial orbits. Conversely, haloes embedded in prominent filaments do not change much in size and are dominated by tangential orbits. Using zoom hydrodynamical simulations including star formation and feedback, we study how gas accretes onto these different classes of objects that, for simplicity, we dub 'accreting' and 'stalled' haloes. We find that all haloes get a fresh supply of newly…
We seek to understand the relationship between galaxy properties and their local environment, which calls for a proper formulation of the notion of environment. We analyse the GIMIC suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations within the framework of the cosmic web as formulated by Hoffman et al., focusing on properties of simulated DM haloes and luminous galaxies with respect to voids, sheets, filaments and knots - the four elements of the cosmic web. We find that the mass functions of haloes depend on environment, which drives other environmental dependence of galaxy formation. The web s…
It is known observationally that the major axes of galaxy clusters and their brightest cluster galaxies are roughly aligned with each other. To understand the origin of the alignment, we identify 40 cluster-sized dark matter (DM) haloes with masses higher than $5\times10^{13}~M_{\odot}$ and their central galaxies (CGs) at $z\approx 0$ in the Horizon-AGN cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We trace the progenitors at 50 different epochs between $0<z<5$. We then fit their shapes and orientations with a triaxial ellipsoid model. While the orientations of both DM haloes and CGs change signific…
In the standard disk galaxy formation model, the sizes of galactic disks are tightly related to the spin parameters $λ$ of their dark matter haloes. The model has been wildly adopted by various semi-analytic galaxy formation models which have been extremely successful to interpret a large body of observational data. However, the size-$λ$ correlation was rarely seen in most modern hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation. In this short paper, we make use of 4 sets of large hydrodynamical simulations to explore the size-spin parameter relation with a large sample of simulated disk galaxies…
We investigate the baryon content of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) within the virial radius of $M_h \sim 10^{12} \; M_\odot$ haloes at z ~ 3, by modelling the surface brightness profile of the giant Ly$α$ nebulae recently discovered by MUSE around bright QSOs at this redshift. We initially assume fluorescent emission from cold photo-ionized gas confined by the pressure of a hot halo. Acceptable CGM baryon fractions (equal or smaller than the cosmological value) require that the cold gas occupies $\lesssim$ 1% of the volume, but is about as massive as the hot gas. CGM baryon fractions as low …
A recent observational study of haloes of nearby Milky Way-like galaxies shows that only half (four out of eight) of the current sample exhibits strong negative metallicity ([Fe/H]) gradients. This is at odds with predictions from hydrodynamical simulations where such gradients are ubiquitous. In this Letter, we use high resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations to study the [Fe/H] distribution of galactic haloes. We find that kinematically selected stellar haloes, including both in-situ and accreted particles, have an oblate [Fe/H] distribution. Spherical [Fe/H] radial profiles show …
By means of high resolution 2D hydrodynamical simulations, we study the evolution of the hot ISM for a large set of early-type galaxy models, characterized by various degrees of flattening and internal rotation. The galaxies are described by state-of-the-art axisymmetric two-component models, tailored to reproduce real systems; the dark matter haloes follow the Navarro-Frenk-White or the Einasto profile. The gas is produced by the evolving stars, and heated by Type Ia SNe. We find that, in general, the rotation field of the ISM in rotating galaxies is very similar to that of the stars, with a …
We examine the stellar haloes of the Auriga simulations, a suite of thirty cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical high-resolution simulations of Milky Way-mass galaxies performed with the moving-mesh code AREPO. We study halo global properties and radial profiles out to $\sim 150$ kpc for each individual galaxy. The Auriga haloes are diverse in their masses and density profiles; mean metallicity and metallicity gradients; ages; and shapes, reflecting the stochasticity inherent in their accretion and merger histories. A comparison with observations of nearby late-type galaxies shows very good agre…
We use cosmological hydrodynamical galaxy formation simulations from the NIHAO project to investigate the impact of the threshold for star formation on the response of the dark matter (DM) halo to baryonic processes. The fiducial NIHAO threshold, $n=10\, {\rm cm}^{-3}$, results in strong expansion of the DM halo in galaxies with stellar masses in the range $10^{7.5} < M_{star} < 10^{9.5} M_{\odot}$. We find that lower thresholds such as $n=0.1$ (as employed by the EAGLE/APOSTLE and Illustris/AURIGA projects) do not result in significant halo expansion at any mass scale. Halo expansion driven b…
(Abridged) Extensions of the standard model of particle physics predict very light bosons, ranging from about 10^{-5} eV for the QCD axion to 10^{-33} eV for ultra-light particles, which could be the cold dark matter (CDM) in the Universe. If so, their phase-space density must be high enough to form a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The fluid-like nature of BEC-CDM dynamics differs from that of standard collisionless CDM (sCDM), so observations of galactic haloes may distinguish them. sCDM has problems with galaxy observations on small scales, which BEC-CDM may overcome for a large range of pa…
(Abridged) We study the rate at which gas accretes onto galaxies and haloes and investigate whether the accreted gas was shocked to high temperatures before reaching a galaxy. For this purpose we use a suite of large cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations from the OWLS project. We improve on previous work by considering a wider range of halo masses and redshifts, by distinguishing accretion onto haloes and galaxies, by including important feedback processes, and by comparing simulations with different physics. The specific rate of gas accretion onto haloes is, like that for dark matter, only…

We use cosmological hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations with the SPH code gasoline of four haloes of mass M_{200} \sim 10^{13}\Msun to study the response of the dark matter to elliptical galaxy formation. Our simulations include metallicity dependent gas cooling, star formation, and feedback from massive stars and supernovae, but not active galactic nuclei (AGN). At z=2 the progenitor galaxies have stellar to halo mass ratios consistent with halo abundance matching, assuming a Salpeter initial mass function. However by z=0 the standard runs suffer from the well known overcooling problem, overpr…
Fuzzy dark matter of ultra-light axions has gained attention, largely in light of the galactic scale problems associated with cold dark matter. But the large de Broglie wavelength, believed to possibly alleviate these problems, also leads to fluctuations that place constraints on ultra-light axions. We adapt and extend a method, previously devised to describe the effect of gaseous fluctuations on cold dark matter cusps, in order to determine the imprints of ultra-light axion haloes on the motion of classical test particles. We first evaluate the effect of fluctuations in a statistically homoge…
Observational measures of the primordial helium mass fraction, $Y_{\rm P}$, are of interest for cosmology and fundamental particle physics. Current measures obtained from H II regions agree with the Standard Model prediction to approximately 1% precision, although these determinations may be affected by systematic uncertainties. This possibility can only be tested by independently measuring the helium abundance in new ways. Here, we propose a novel method to obtain a measurement of $Y_{\rm P}$ using hydrogen and helium recombination line emission from RELHICs: pristine, gas-rich but star-free …
We introduce project NIHAO (Numerical Investigation of a Hundred Astrophysical Objects), a set of 100 cosmological zoom-in hydrodynamical simulations performed using the gasoline code, with an improved implementation of the SPH algorithm. The haloes in our study range from dwarf to Milky Way masses, and represent an unbiased sampling of merger histories, concentrations and spin parameters. The particle masses and force softenings are chosen to resolve the mass profile to below 1% of the virial radius at all masses, ensuring that galaxy half-light radii are well resolved. Using the same treatme…
The dark matter content of a gravitationally bound halo is known to be affected by the galaxy and gas it hosts. We characterise this response for haloes spanning over four orders of magnitude in mass in the hydrodynamical simulation suites IllustrisTNG and EAGLE. We present simple fitting functions in the spherically averaged quasi-adiabatic relaxation framework that accurately capture the dark matter response over the full range of halo mass and halo-centric distance we explore. We show that commonly employed schemes, which consider the relative change in radius $r_f/r_i-1$ of a spherical dar…
High resolution 2D hydrodynamical simulations describing the evolution of the hot ISM in axisymmetric two-component models of early-type galaxies well reproduced the observed trends of the X-ray luminosity ($L_\mathrm{x}$) and temperature ($T_\mathrm{x}$) with galaxy shape and rotation, however they also revealed the formation of an exceedingly massive cooled gas disc in rotating systems. In a follow-up of this study, here we investigate the effects of star formation in the disc, including the consequent injection of mass, momentum and energy in the pre-existing interstellar medium. It is foun…
We use cosmological hydrodynamical simulations to investigate how the inclusion of physical processes relevant to galaxy formation (star formation, metal-line cooling, stellar winds, supernovae and feedback from Active Galactic Nuclei, AGN) change the properties of haloes, over four orders of magnitude in mass. We find that gas expulsion and the associated dark matter (DM) expansion induced by supernova-driven winds are important for haloes with masses M200 < 10^13 Msun, lowering their masses by up to 20% relative to a DM-only model. AGN feedback, which is required to prevent overcooling, has …
We investigate the environment in which direct-collapse black holes may form by analysing a cosmological, hydrodynamical simulation that is part of the First Billion Years project. This simulation includes the most relevant physical processes leading to direct collapse of haloes, most importantly, molecular hydrogen depletion by dissociation of $H_2$ and $H^-$ from the evolving Lyman-Werner radiation field. We selected a sample of pristine atomic cooling haloes that have never formed stars in their past, have not been polluted with heavy elements and are cooling predominantly via atomic hydrog…

We explored the role of X-ray binaries composed by a black hole and a massive stellar companion (BHXs) as sources of kinetic feedback by using hydrodynamical cosmological simulations. Following previous results, our BHX model selects low metal-poor stars ($Z = [0,10^{-4}]$) as possible progenitors. The model that better reproduces observations assumes that a $\sim 20\%$ fraction of low-metallicity black holes are in binary systems which produce BHXs. These sources are estimated to deposit $\sim 10^{52}$ erg of kinetic energy per event. With these parameters and in the simulated volume, we find…
Dark matter (DM) haloes forming near the thermal cut-off scale of the density perturbations are unique, since they are the smallest objects and form through monolithic gravitational collapse, while larger haloes contrastingly have experienced mergers. While standard cold dark matter (CDM) simulations readily produce haloes that follow the universal Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) density profile with an inner slope, $ρ\propto r^{-α}$, with $α=1$, recent simulations have found that when the free-streaming cut-off expected for the CDM model is resolved, the resulting haloes follow nearly power-law den…
A defining prediction of the cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological model is the existence of a very large population of low-mass haloes. This population is absent in models in which the dark matter particle is warm (WDM). These alternatives can, in principle, be distinguished observationally because halos along the line-of-sight can perturb galaxy-galaxy strong gravitational lenses. Furthermore, the WDM particle mass could be deduced because the cut-off in their halo mass function depends on the mass of the particle. We systematically explore the detectability of low-mass haloes in WDM models by…
A cutoff in the linear matter power spectrum at dwarf galaxy scales has been shown to affect the abundance, formation mechanism and age of dwarf haloes and their galaxies at high and low redshift. We use hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation within the ETHOS framework in a benchmark model that has such a cutoff, and that has been shown to be an alternative to the cold dark matter (CDM) model that alleviates its dwarf-scale challenges. We show how galaxies in this model form differently to CDM on a halo-by-halo basis, at redshifts $z\ge6$. We show that ETHOS haloes at the half-mode mas…
