Strongly lensed quasar systems with time delay measurements provide "time delay distances", which are a combination of three angular diameter distances and serve as powerful tools to determine the Hubble constant $H_0$. However, current results often rely on the assumption of the $Λ$CDM model. Here we use a model-independent method based on Gaussian process to directly constrain the value of $H_0$. By using Gaussian process regression, we can generate posterior samples of unanchored supernova distances independent of any cosmological model and anchor them with strong lens systems. The combination of a supernova sample with large statistics but no sensitivity to $H_0$ with a strong lens sample with small statistics but $H_0$ sensitivity gives a precise $H_0$ measurement without the assumption of any cosmological model. We use four well-analyzed lensing systems from the state-of-art lensing program H0LiCOW and the Pantheon supernova compilation in our analysis. Assuming the Universe is flat, we derive the constraint $H_0=72.2 \pm 2.1\,$km/s/Mpc, a precision of $2.9\%$. Allowing for cosmic curvature with a prior of $Ω_{k}=[-0.2,0.2]$, the constraint becomes $H_0=73.0_{-3.0}^{+2.8}\,$km/s/Mpc.
We make use of publicly available results from N-body Millennium Simulation to create mock samples of lensed supernovae type Ia and core-collapse. Simulating galaxy-galaxy lensing we derive the rates of lensed supernovae and find than at redshifts higher that 0.5 about 0.06 per cent of supernovae will be lensed by a factor two or more. Future wide field surveys like Gaia or LSST should be able to detect lensed supernovae in their unbiased sky monitoring. Gaia (from 2013) will detect at least 2 cases whereas LSST (from 2018) will see more than 500 a year. Large number of future lensed supernova…
Strongly lensed supernovae can be detected as multiply imaged or highly magnified transients. In order to compare the performances of these two observational strategies, we calculate expected discovery rates as a function of survey depth in five grizy filters and for different classes of supernovae (Ia, IIP, IIL, Ibc and IIn). We find that detections via magnification is the only effective strategy for relatively shallow pre-LSST surveys. For survey depths about the LSST capacity, both strategies yield comparable numbers of lensed supernovae. Supernova samples from the two methods are to a lar…
It has recently been proposed that gravitationally lensed type-Ia supernovae can provide microlensing-free time-delay measurements provided that the measurement is taken during the achromatic expansion phase of the explosion and that color light curves are used rather than single-band light curves. If verified, this would provide both precise and accurate time-delay measurements, making lensed type-Ia supernovae a new golden standard for time-delay cosmography. However, the 3D geometry of the expanding shell can introduce an additional bias that has not yet been fully explored. In this work, w…
Gravitationally lensed Type Ia supernovae are an emerging probe with great potential for constraining dark energy, spatial curvature, and the Hubble constant. The multiple images and their time delayed and magnified fluxes may be unresolved, however, blended into a single lightcurve. We demonstrate methods without a fixed source template matching for extracting the individual images, determining whether there are one (no lensing) or two or four (lensed) images, and measuring the time delays between them that are valuable cosmological probes. We find 100% success for determining the number of i…
Cadenced optical imaging surveys in the next decade will be capable of detecting time-varying galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses in large numbers, increasing the size of the statistically well-defined samples of multiply-imaged quasars by two orders of magnitude, and discovering the first strongly-lensed supernovae. We carry out a detailed calculation of the likely yields of several planned surveys, using realistic distributions for the lens and source properties and taking magnification bias and image configuration detectability into account. We find that upcoming wide-field synoptic su…
One of the primary mission objectives for the Roman Space Telescope is to investigate the nature of dark energy with a variety of methods. Observations of Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) will be one of the principal anchors of the Roman cosmology program, through traditional luminosity distance measurements. This SNIa cosmology program can provide another valuable cosmological probe, without altering the mission strategy: time delay cosmography with gravitationally lensed SN. In this work, we forecast lensed SN cosmology constraints with the Roman Space Telescope, while providing useful tools for fu…
Gravitationally lensed Type Ia supernovae may be the next frontier in cosmic probes, able to deliver independent constraints on dark energy, spatial curvature, and the Hubble constant. Measurements of time delays between the multiple images become more incisive due to the standardized candle nature of the source, monitoring for months rather than years, and partial immunity to microlensing. While currently extremely rare, hundreds of such systems should be detected by upcoming time domain surveys. Even more will have the images spatially unresolved, with the observed lightcurve a superposition…
We investigate the possibility to have a constraint on the mass of thermal warm dark matter (WDM) particle from the expected data of the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) survey if all the dark matter is warm. For this purpose we consider the lensing effect of large scale structure based on the warm dark matter scenario on the apparent magnitude of SNe Ia. We use HALOFIT as non-linear matter power spectrum and the variance of PDF. We preform a Fisher matrix analysis and obtain the lower bound of $m_{\rm WDM}>0.167$keV.
Strong gravitational lensing effect is a powerful tool to probe cosmological models and gravity theories. Recently, the time-delay cosmography from strong lensing and the stellar kinematics of the deflector, which encode the Hubble constant and the post-Newtonian parameter via two distance ratios reflecting the lensing mass and dynamical mass respectively, have been proposed to investigate these two parameters simultaneously. Among strong lensing systems with different sources, strongly lensed fast radio bursts (FRBs) have been proposed as precision probes of the universe since the time delay …
Strong lensing by galaxy clusters can be used to significantly expand the survey reach, thus allowing observation of magnified high-redshift supernovae that otherwise would remain undetected. Strong lensing can also provide multiple images of the galaxies that lie behind the clusters. Detection of strongly lensed Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is especially useful because of their standardizable brightness, as they can be used to improve either cluster lensing models or independent measurements of cosmological parameters. The cosmological parameter, the Hubble constant, is of particular interest …

The dominant uncertainty in the current measurement of the Hubble constant ($H_0$) with strong gravitational lensing time delays is attributed to uncertainties in the mass profiles of the main deflector galaxies. Strongly lensed supernovae (glSNe) can provide, in addition to measurable time delays, lensing magnification constraints when knowledge about the unlensed apparent brightness of the explosion is imposed. We present a hierarchical Bayesian framework to combine a dataset of SNe that are not strongly lensed and a dataset of strongly lensed SNe with measured time delays. We jointly constr…
Massive galaxy clusters at intermediate redshifts act as gravitational lenses that can magnify supernovae (SNe) occurring in background galaxies. We assess the possibility to use lensed SNe to put constraints on the mass models of galaxy clusters and the Hubble parameter at high redshift. Due to the standard candle nature of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), observational information on the lensing magnification from an intervening galaxy cluster can be used to constrain the model for the cluster mass distribution. A statistical analysis using parametric cluster models was performed to investigate …
Measuring time delays from strongly lensed supernovae (SNe) is emerging as a novel and independent tool for estimating the Hubble constant $(H_0)$. This is very important given the recent discord in the value of $H_0$ from two methods that probe different distance ranges. The success of this technique will rely of our ability to discover strongly lensed SNe with measurable time delays. Here, we present the magnifications and the time delays for the multiply-imaged galaxies behind the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) galaxy clusters, by using recently published lensing models. Continuing on our pre…
Recently, there have been two landmark discoveries of gravitationally lensed supernovae: the first multiply-imaged SN, "Refsdal", and the first Type Ia SN resolved into multiple images, SN iPTF16geu. Fitting the multiple light curves of such objects can deliver measurements of the lensing time delays, which are the difference in arrival times for the separate images. These measurements provide precise tests of lens models or constraints on the Hubble constant and other cosmological parameters that are independent of the local distance ladder. Over the next decade, accurate time delay measureme…
We present a spatio-temporal AI framework that concurrently exploits both the spatial and time-variable features of gravitationally lensed supernovae in optical images to ultimately aid in future discoveries of such exotic transients in wide-field surveys. Our spatio-temporal engine is designed using recurrent convolutional layers, while drawing from recent advances in variational inference to quantify approximate Bayesian uncertainties via a confidence score. Using simulated Young Supernova Experiment (YSE) images of lensed and non-lensed supernovae as a showcase, we find that the use of time…
The observation of strongly lensed Type Ia supernovae enables both the luminosity and angular diameter distance to a source to be measured simultaneously using a single observation. This feature can be used to measure the distance duality parameter $η(z)$ without relying on multiple datasets and cosmological assumptions to reconstruct the relation between angular and luminosity distances. In this paper, we show how this can be achieved by future observations of strongly lensed Type Ia systems. Using simulated datasets, we reconstruct the function $η(z)$ using both parametric and non-parametric…
It has been debated for a decade whether there is a large overabundance of strongly lensed arcs in galaxy clusters, compared to expectations from LambdaCDM cosmology. We perform ray tracing through the most massive halos of the Millennium simulation at several redshifts in their evolution, using the Hubble Ultra Deep Field as a source image, to produce realistic simulated lensed images. We compare the lensed arc statistics measured from the simulations to those of a sample of 45 X-ray selected clusters, observed with the Hubble Space Telescope, that we have analysed in Horesh et al. (2010). Th…

High redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are likely to be gravitationally lensed by dark matter haloes of galaxies in the foreground. Since SNe Ia have very small dispersion after light curve shape and colour corrections, their brightness can be used to measure properties of the dark matter haloes via gravitational magnification. We use observations of galaxies and SNe Ia within the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) to measure the relation between galaxy luminosity and dark matter halo mass. The relation we investigate is a scaling law between velocity dispersion and galaxy lumi…
Small galaxies consisting entirely of population III (pop III) stars may form at high redshifts, and could constitute one of the best probes of such stars. Here, we explore the prospects of detecting gravitationally lensed pop III galaxies behind the galaxy cluster J0717.5+3745 (J0717) with both the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). By projecting simulated catalogs of pop III galaxies at z~7-15 through the J0717 magnification maps, we estimate the lensed number counts as a function of flux detection threshold. We find that the ongoing HST survey C…
Time delays between the multiple images of strongly lensed Type Ia supernovae (gl\sneia) have the potential to deliver precise cosmological constraints, but the effects of microlensing on the measurement have not been studied in detail. Here we quantify the effect of microlensing on the gl\snia\ yield of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) and the effect of microlensing on the precision and accuracy of time delays that can be extracted from LSST gl\sneia. Microlensing has a negligible effect on the LSST gl\snia\ yield, but it can be increased by a factor of $\sim$2 to 930 systems using …
Massive galaxy clusters at intermediate redshift can magnify the flux of distant background sources by several magnitudes and we exploit this effect to search for lensed distant supernovae that may otherwise be too faint to be detected. A supernova search was conducted at near infrared wavelengths using the ISAAC instrument at the VLT. The galaxy clusters Abell 1689, Abell 1835 and AC114 were observed at multiple epochs of 2 hours of exposure time, separated by a month. Image-subtraction techniques were used to search for transient objects with light curve properties consistent with supernovae…

We report observations of three gravitationally lensed supernovae (SNe) in the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) Multi-Cycle Treasury program. These objects, SN CLO12Car (z = 1.28), SN CLN12Did (z = 0.85), and SN CLA11Tib (z = 1.14), are located behind three different clusters, MACSJ1720.2+3536 (z = 0.391), RXJ1532.9+3021 (z = 0.345), and Abell 383 (z = 0.187), respectively. Each SN was detected in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical and infrared images. Based on photometric classification, we find that SNe CLO12Car and CLN12Did are likely to be Type Ia supernovae (SNe …

Strongly lensed type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are expected to have some advantages in measuring time delays of multiple images, and so they have a great potential to be developed into a powerful late-universe cosmological probe. In this paper, we simulate a sample of lensed SNe Ia with time-delay measurements in the era of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). Based on the distance sum rule, we use lensed SNe Ia to implement model-independent constraints on the Hubble constant $H_0$ and cosmic curvature parameter $Ω_K$ in the late universe. We find that if 20 lensed SNe Ia could be observe…
We investigate the effect of microlensing on the standardisation of strongly lensed Type Ia supernovae (GLSNe Ia). We present predictions for the amount of scatter induced by microlensing across a range of plausible strong lens macromodels. We find that lensed images in regions of low convergence, shear and stellar density are standardisable, where the microlensing scatter is < 0.15 magnitudes, comparable to the intrinsic dispersion of for a typical SN Ia. These standardisable configurations correspond to asymmetric lenses with an image located far outside the Einstein radius of the lens. Symm…
The massive cluster MACSJ1149.5+2223(z=0.544) displays five very large lensed images of a well resolved spiral galaxy at $z_{\rm spect}=1.491$. It is within one of these images that the first example of a multiply-lensed supernova has been detected recently as part of the Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space. The depth of this data also reveals many HII regions within the lensed spiral galaxy which we identify between the five counter-images. Here we expand the capability of our free-form method to incorporate these HII regions locally, with other reliable lensed galaxies added for a global …
We exploit the strong lensing effect to explore the properties of intrinsically faint and compact galaxies at intermediate redshift, at the highest possible resolution at optical wavelengths. Our sample consists of 46 strongly-lensed emission line galaxies discovered by the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey. The galaxies have been imaged at high resolution with HST in three bands (V_HST, I_814 and H_160), allowing us to infer their size, luminosity, and stellar mass using stellar population synthesis models. Lens modeling is performed using a new fast and robust code, klens, which we test extensiv…

Using three magnified Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) detected behind CLASH clusters, we perform a first pilot study to see whether standardizable candles can be used to calibrate cluster mass maps created from strong lensing observations. Such calibrations will be crucial when next generation HST cluster surveys (e.g. FRONTIER) provide magnification maps that will, in turn, form the basis for the exploration of the high redshift Universe. We classify SNe using combined photometric and spectroscopic observations, finding two of the three to be clearly of type SN Ia and the third probable. The SNe …
Large-scale astronomical surveys have the potential to capture data on large numbers of strongly gravitationally lensed supernovae (LSNe). To facilitate timely analysis and spectroscopic follow-up before the supernova fades, an LSN needs to be identified soon after it begins. To quickly identify LSNe in optical survey datasets, we designed ZipperNet, a multi-branch deep neural network that combines convolutional layers (traditionally used for images) with long short-term memory (LSTM) layers (traditionally used for time series). We tested ZipperNet on the task of classifying objects from four …
Gravitationally lensed supernovae (LSNe) are important probes of cosmic expansion, but they remain rare and difficult to find. Current cosmic surveys likely contain and 5-10 LSNe in total while next-generation experiments are expected to contain several hundreds to a few thousands of these systems. We search for these systems in observed Dark Energy Survey (DES) 5-year SN fields -- 10 3-sq. deg. regions of sky imaged in the $griz$ bands approximately every six nights over five years. To perform the search, we utilize the DeepZipper approach: a multi-branch deep learning architecture trained on…
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) that are multiply imaged by gravitational lensing can extend the SN Ia Hubble diagram to very high redshifts $(z\gtrsim 2)$, probe potential SN Ia evolution, and deliver high-precision constraints on $H_0$, $w$, and $Ω_m$ via time delays. However, only one, iPTF16geu, has been found to date, and many more are needed to achieve these goals. To increase the multiply imaged SN Ia discovery rate, we present a simple algorithm for identifying gravitationally lensed SN Ia candidates in cadenced, wide-field optical imaging surveys. The technique is to look for supernovae t…
We present predictions for time delays between multiple images of the gravitationally lensed supernova, iPTF16geu, which was recently discovered from the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF). As the supernova is of Type Ia where the intrinsic luminosity is usually well-known, accurately measured time delays of the multiple images could provide tight constraints on the Hubble constant. According to our lens mass models constrained by the {\it Hubble Space Telescope} F814W image, we expect the maximum relative time delay to be less than a day, which is consistent with the maximum of 100…
Supernovae (SNe) could be powerful probes of the properties of stars and galaxies at high redshifts in future surveys. Wide fields and longer exposure times are required to offset diminishing star formation rates and lower fluxes to detect useful numbers of events at high redshift. In principle, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) could discover large numbers of early SNe because of its wide fields but only at lower redshifts because of its AB mag limit of ~ 24. But gravitational lensing by galaxy clusters and massive galaxies could boost flux from ancient SNe and allow LSST to detect t…
A hierarchical Bayesian method is applied to the analysis of Type-Ia supernovae (SNIa) observations to constrain the properties of the dark matter haloes of galaxies along the SNIa lines-of-sight via their gravitational lensing effect. The full joint posterior distribution of the dark matter halo parameters is explored using the nested sampling algorithm {\sc MultiNest}, which also efficiently calculates the Bayesian evidence, thereby facilitating robust model comparison. We first demonstrate the capabilities of the method by applying it to realistic simulated SNIa data, based on the real 3-ye…
