Reconstruction of the $B^0 \to D^{*-} τ^+ ν_τ$ angular distribution is complicated by the strongly-biasing effect of losing the neutrino information from both the $B$ and $τ$ decays. In this work, a novel method for making unbiased measurements of the angular coefficients while preserving the model independence of the angular technique is demonstrated. The twelve angular functions that describe the signal decay, in addition to background terms, are modelled in a multidimensional fit, using template probability density functions that encapsulate all resolution and acceptance effects. Sensitivities at the LHCb and Belle II experiments are estimated, and sources of systematic uncertainty are discussed, notably in the extrapolation to a measurement of $R(D^{*})$.
We present state-of-the-art high-precision theory predictions for the dominant angular coefficients parametrizing the spin-correlations in the production and decay of a W-boson produced at transverse momentum larger than 30 GeV. The computation at NNLO QCD and NLO EW accuracy are combined to obtain differential distributions in the W-boson transverse momentum and rapidity. The found results show up to 10 % corrections in certain regions of phase space, while the scale bands are significantly reduced as compared to NLO QCD.
We discuss how the angular distribution of lepton pairs from decays of vector mesons depends on the choice of reference frame, and provide a geometrical description of the transformations of the coefficients of the angular distribution. Invariant expressions involving all coefficients are discussed, together with bounds and consistency relations.
Quantum interference of helicity amplitudes provides a powerful tool for measuring the spins of new particles. By looking at the azimuthal angular dependence of the differential cross-section in the production followed by decay of a new particle species one can determine its spin by looking at the various cosine modes. The heavy spin-2 Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton provides a unique signature with a $\cos{(4 ϕ)}$ mode. We study the feasibility of this approach to measuring the spin of the KK graviton in the Randall-Sundrum Model at the LHC.
Following updated and extended measurements of the full angular distribution of the decay $Λ_b\to Λ(\to p\,π^-)μ^+μ^-$ by the LHCb collaborations, as well as a new measurement of the $Λ\to p π^-$ decay asymmetry parameter by the BESIII collaboration, we study the impact of these results on searches for non-standard effects in exclusive $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ decays. To this end, we constrain the Wilson coefficients $\mathcal{C}_{9}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{10}$ of the numerically leading dimension-six operators in the weak effective Hamiltonian, in addition to the relevant nuisance parameters. In stark cont…
The angular distributions of lepton pairs in the Drell-Yan process can provide rich information on the underlying QCD production mechanisms. These dynamics can be parameterised in terms of a set of frame dependent angular coefficients, $A_{i=0,\ldots,7}$, which depend on the invariant mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity of the lepton pair. Motivated by recent measurements of these coefficients by ATLAS and CMS, and in particular by the apparent violation of the Lam-Tung relation $A_0-A_2=0$, we perform a precision study of the angular coefficients at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$ in perturbative QC…
High precision data of lepton angular distributions for $γ^*/Z$ production in $pp$ collisions at the LHC, covering broad ranges of dilepton transverse momenta ($q_T$) and rapidity ($y$), were recently reported. Strong $q_T$ dependencies were observed for several angular distribution coefficients, $A_i$, including $A_0 - A_4$. Significant $y$ dependencies were also found for the coefficients $A_1$, $A_3$ and $A_4$, while $A_0$ and $A_2$ exhibit very weak rapidity dependence. Using an intuitive geometric picture we show that the $q_T$ and $y$ dependencies of the angular distributions coefficient…
In many extensions of the standard model, there exist a few extra Higgs bosons. Suppose a heavy neutral Higgs boson H is discovered at the LHC, one could then investigate CP and CPT~ properties of its couplings to a pair of $Z$ bosons through $H \to ZZ \to 4\ell$. We use the helicity-amplitude method to write down the most general form for the angular distributions of the four final-state leptons, which can cover the case of CP-even, -odd, and -mixed state for the Higgs boson. We figure out there are 9 types of angular observables and all the $H$ couplings to $Z$ bosons can be fully determined…
The extraction of the W-boson mass, a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model, from hadron-hadron collision requires precise theory predictions. In this regard, angular coefficients are crucial to model the dynamics of W-boson production. In this work, we provide, for the first time, angular coefficients at NNLO QCD + NLO EW accuracy for finite transverse momentum W-boson at the LHC. The corrections can reach up to 10% in certain regions of phase space. They are accompanied by a significant reduction of the scale uncertainty. This work should, besides providing reference values for theory-…
At designed CEPC, similar to hadron collider, the angular distribution coefficients of decay lepton pair from produced Z(W) boson in $e^+ e^-$ collisions are predicted. Their dependence on $cosθ_Z$($cosθ_W$) are presented in four different polarization frame. Furthermore, the value of angular coefficients in different bins of $cosθ_Z$ are presented in the C-S frame. In comparison to the case at hadron collider, better accurate measurement for $Z(W)$ is expected since there exists less background and $W$ could be reconstructed from it's leptonic decay channel. This work supply a way to precise …
Many new linearized coefficients for Lorentz violation are discovered in our recent work on the construction of a generic Lorentz-violating effective field theory in curved spacetime. The new coefficients can be constrained by experiments in weak gravity fields. In this work, we compare experiments in different gravitational potentials and study three types of gravity-related experiments: free-fall, gravitational interferometer, and gravitational bound-state experiments. First constraints on the new coefficients for Lorentz violation are extracted from those experiments.
We present next-to-leading order (NLO) electroweak corrections to the dominant five angular coefficients parametrizing the Drell-Yan process in the $Z$-boson mass peak range for finite-$p_T$ vector boson production. The results are presented differentially in the vector boson transverse momentum. The Lam-Tung violating difference $A_0-A_2$ is examined alongside the coefficients. A single lepton transverse momentum cut is needed in the case of electroweak corrections to avoid a double singularity in the photon induced diagrams, and the dependence on the value of this cut is examined. We compare…
Suppose a heavy neutral Higgs or scalar boson $H$ is discovered at the LHC, it is important to investigate its couplings to the standard model particles as much as possible. Here in this work we attempt to probe the CP-even and CP-odd couplings of the heavy Higgs boson to a pair of top quarks, through the decay $H \to t\bar t \to b W^+ \bar b W^-$. We use the helicity-amplitude method to write down the most general form for the angular distributions of the final-state $b$ quarks and $W$ bosons. We figure out that there are 6 types of angular observables and, under CP$\widetilde{\rm T}$ conserv…
Chern-Simons gravity coupled to the scalar sector through a generic coupling function $f(ϕ)$ can be tested at the very high energies of the inflationary period. In 1706.04627, we computed the theoretical parity breaking signatures of the $\langle γγζ\rangle$ primordial bispectrum which mixes two gravitons and one scalar curvature perturbation. We defined a parameter $Π$ which measures the level of parity breaking of the corresponding bispectrum. In this work we forecast the expected $1 σ$ error on $Π$ using the cosmic microwave background (CMB) angular bispectra. We find that, given the angula…
Most models for the strong decay of mesons, as well as unquenched quark models which incorporate the effect of coupling to meson-meson channels, assume that the coupling is driven by the creation of a quark-antiquark pair in spin triplet. Their matrix elements can be factorised into a sum over (model-dependent) spatial matrix elements multiplied by (model-independent) coefficients. A general expression for these coefficients is obtained, and their properties are studied. Numerical tables of the coefficients can be used as a starting point for future calculations. The coefficients lead to model…
We study hadronic polarization and the related anisotropy of the dilepton angular distribution for the reaction $πN \to Ne^+e^-$. We employ consistent effective interactions for baryon resonances up to spin-5/2 to compute their contribution to the anisotropy coefficient. We show that the spin and parity of the intermediate baryon resonance is reflected in the angular dependence of the anisotropy coefficient. We present results for the anisotropy coefficient including the $N(1520)$ and $N(1440)$ resonances, which are essential at the collision energy of the recent data obtained by the HADES col…
The observed pT-dependence of nuclear effects for J/Psi produced in heavy ion collisions at RHIC might look puzzling, since the nuclear suppression seems to fade at large pT. We explain this by the interplay of three mechanisms: (i) attenuation of J/Psi in the hot medium created in the nuclear collision; (ii) initial state shadowing of charmed quarks and attenuation of a c-cbar dipole propagating through the colliding nuclei; (iii) a strong Cronin effect for J/Psi caused by saturation of gluons in the colliding nuclei. All three effects are well under control and calculated in a parameter free…
Model-Independent Test of Prerecombination New Physics: Measuring the Sound Horizon with Gravitational Wave Standard Sirens and the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation Angular Scale
When a top quark decays there is a large amount of angular correlation, in its rest frame, between its spin orientation and the direction of flight of the charged lepton from its decay. In this letter we investigate the prospects of measuring this angular correlation using the MC@NLO framework. The strength of the correlation is investigated for different spin bases. The robustness against variations of PDF sets and uncertainties, factorization scale dependence, center-of-mass energy, and the jet R-parameter, is also examined.
The HAWC Collaboration has recently reported the detection of bright and spatially extended multi-TeV gamma-ray emission from Geminga, Monogem, and a handful of other nearby, middle-aged pulsars. The angular profile of the emission observed from these pulsars is surprising, in that it implies that cosmic-ray diffusion is significantly inhibited within ~25 pc of these objects, compared to the expectations of standard Galactic diffusion models. This raises the important question of whether the diffusion coefficient in the local interstellar medium is also low, or whether it is instead better fit…
The angular correlation of the electrons in the neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu2β$) is calculated taking into account the nucleon recoil, the $S$ and $P$-waves for the electrons and the electron mass using a general Lorentz invariant effective Lagrangian. We show that the angular coefficient is essentially independent of the nuclear matrix element models. We work out the angular coefficient in several scenarios for new physics, in particular, in the left-right symmetric models.
In most meson strong decay and unquenched (coupled-channel) quark models, the pair-creation operator is a scalar product of vectors in the spin and spatial degrees of freedom. While differing in the spatial part, most models have the same spin part, which creates a qq* pair coupled to spin triplet, with the spins of the initial quarks as spectators. This is a basic assumption of the 3P0 model, and is well-known to arise also in the flux tube model, starting from the strong coupling expansion of lattice QCD. In this article the same structure is shown to emerge in the Cornell model, in the domi…
The lepton angular distribution coefficients $A_i$ for $Z$ boson production in $pp$ and $\bar p p$ collisions have been measured at the LHC and the Tevatron. A recent study showed that many features of the measured angular distribution coefficients, including the transverse momentum ($q_T$) and rapidity dependencies and the violation of the Lam-Tung relation, can be well described using an intuitive geometric approach. In this paper, we extend this geometric approach to describe the angular distribution coefficients for $W$ boson produced in $\bar{p} p$ collisions at the Tevatron. We first com…
The dependence of the longitudinal polarization transfer to the proton in the $ e \vec p \to e \vec p$ process on the proton scattering angle has been numerically analyzed for the case where the initial (at rest) proton is partially polarized along the direction of motion of the detected recoil proton. The analysis is based on the results of JLab polarization experiments on measuring the ratio of the Sachs form factors in the $\vec e p \to e \vec p$ process using the Kelly (2004) and Qattan (2015) parameterizations for their ratio, in the kinematics of the SANE Collaboration experiment (2020) …
