We discuss how the angular distribution of lepton pairs from decays of vector mesons depends on the choice of reference frame, and provide a geometrical description of the transformations of the coefficients of the angular distribution. Invariant expressions involving all coefficients are discussed, together with bounds and consistency relations.
The experimental observation of lepton-number violating processes would unambiguously indicate the Majorana nature of neutrinos. Various $ΔL$ = 2 processes for pseudoscalar meson $M_1$ decays to another pseudoscalar meson $M_2$ and two charged leptons $\ell_1$, $\ell_2$ ($M_1^+\to \ell_1^+\ell_2^+M_2^-$) have been studied extensively. Extending the existing literature on the studies of these kinds of processes, we consider the rare decays of heavy mesons to a vector meson or a pseudoscalar meson. These processes have not been searched for experimentally, while they may have sizable decay rates…
We claim that the non-resonant contribution to non-leptonic charm meson decays may not be constant in the phase space of the reaction. We argue that this can be relevant for any weak reaction. We discuss in detail the decay $D^+ \to K^- π^+ π^+$.
We investigate the rare electromagnetic decays of neutral vector mesons (exemplified by $J/ψ$, $Υ$, $ρ^0$, $ω,ϕ$, \ldots) into four charged leptons ($2(e^+e^-)$, $2(μ^+μ^-)$, $2(τ^+τ^-)$, $e^+e^-μ^+μ^-$, $e^+e^-τ^+τ^-$, \ldots) at lowest order in QED. In contrast to the case of vector meson decay into a single pair of leptons, the lepton mass must be retained in these four-lepton decay channels to cutoff the mass singularity. Owing to more pronounced collinear enhancement, the branching fractions of vector mesons decays into $ 2(e^+e^-)$ are considerably greater than those for decays into $2(μ…
One of the key assumptions of the Standard Model of fundamental particles is that the interactions of the charged leptons, namely electrons, muons, and taus, differ only because of their different masses. While precision tests have not revealed any definite violation of this assumption, recent studies of B meson decays involving the higher-mass tau lepton have resulted in observations that challenge lepton universality at the level of four standard deviations. A confirmation of these results would point to new particles or interactions, and could have profound implications for our understandin…
An intrinsic parity violating hadronic tau lepton decay is investigated. $τ\to ππην$ is the process in which the dominant contribution to the amplitude is due to the intrinsic parity violation. To predict the hadronic invariant mass spectra and to compare them with experimental data, we extend the chiral Lagrangian with vector mesons so that it incorporates the intrinsic parity violating terms and $ϕ$ and $η^\prime$ mesons. The coefficients of the intrinsic parity violating terms will be determined by fitting the branching fractions for $V^I \rightarrow P γ$, $V^I \rightarrow 3 P$ and $P \to V…
We argue that lepton flavor violating (LFV) decays $M \to \ell_1 \overline{\ell}_2$ of meson states $M$ with different quantum numbers could be used to put constraints on the Wilson coefficients of effective operators describing LFV interactions at low energy scales. We note that the restricted kinematics of the two-body decay of quarkonium or a heavy quark meson allows us to select operators with particular quantum numbers, significantly reducing the reliance on the $single \ operator \ dominance$ assumption that is prevalent in constraining parameters of the effective LFV Lagrangian. We shal…
The spectrum of the $s\bar s$ mesons is studied performing a phenomenological analysis of the Regge trajectories defined for the excitation energies. For the $ϕ(3 ^3S_1)$ state the mass $M(ϕ(3S))=2100(20)$ MeV and the leptonic width $Γ_{ee}(ϕ(3S))=0.27(2)$ keV are obtained, while the mass of the $2 ^3D_1$ state, $M(ϕ(2 ^3D_3))=2180(5)$ MeV, appears to be in agreement with the mass of the $ϕ(2170)$ resonance, and its leptonic width, $Γ_{ee}(2 ^3D_1)=0.20\pm 0.10$ keV, has a large theoretical uncertainty, depending on the parameters of the flattened confining potential.
Light tensor mesons (T = a_2, f_2 and K_2^*) can be produced in decays of tau leptons. In this paper we compute the branching ratios of tau --> T pi nu decays by assuming the dominance of intermediate virtual states to model the form factors involved in the relevant hadronic matrix element. The exclusive f_2(1270) pi^- decay mode turns out to have the largest branching ratio, of O(10^-4) . Our results indicate that the contributions of tensor meson intermediate states to the three-pseudoscalar channels of tau decays are rather small.
A beam dump experiment can be seamlessly added to the {proposed} International Linear Collider (ILC) program because the high energy electron beam should be dumped after the collision point. The ILC beam dump experiment will provide an excellent opportunity to search for new long-lived particles. Since many of them can be produced by a rare decay of standard model particles, we evaluate spectra of the mesons and $τ$ lepton at the decay based on the PHITS and PYTHIA8 simulations. As a motivated physics case, we study the projected sensitivity of heavy neutral leptons at the ILC beam dump experi…
We study constraints on the models of bosonic super-weakly interacting particle (super-WIMP) dark matter (DM) with DM masses $m_X \sim \mathcal{O}(1 - 100)$ keV from leptonic decays $M\rightarrow \ell \barν_\ell + X$, where $M=B^\pm, D^\pm, D_s^\pm$ is a heavy meson state. We focus on two cases where $X$ denotes either a light pseudoscalar (axion-like), or a light vector state that couples to the standard model (SM) through kinetic mixing. We note that for a small DM mass these decays are separately sensitive to DM couplings to quarks, but not its mass.
We construct a parametrization of the lepton energy spectrum in inclusive semileptonic decays of B mesons, based on the available experimental information: moments of the spectrum with cuts, their errors and their correlations, together with kinematical constraints. The result is obtained in the form of a Monte Carlo sample of neural networks trained on replicas of the experimental data, which represents the probability density in the space of lepton energy spectra. This parametrization is then used to extract the b quark mass m_b^{1S} in a way that theoretical uncertainties are minimized, for…
We study the semi-leptonic and non-leptonic $B$ weak decays which are governed by the $B\rightarrow D^{(*)}$ transitions. The branching ratios, CP asymmetries (CPA) and polarization fractions (FA) of non-leptonic decays are investigated in the factorization approximation. The $B\rightarrow D^{(*)}$ form factors are estimated in the Salpeter method. Our estimation on branching ratios generally agree with the existent experimental data. For CPA and polarizations, comparisons among the FA results, the perturbative QCD predictions and experimental data are made.
In the semileptonic decays of heavy mesons and baryons the lepton-mass dependence factors out in the quadratic $\cos^2θ$ coefficient of the differential $\cosθ$ distribution. We call the corresponding normalized coefficient the convexity parameter. This observation opens the path to a test of lepton universality in semileptonic heavy meson and baryon decays that is independent of form-factor effects. By projecting out the quadratic rate coefficient, dividing out the lepton-mass-dependent factor and restricting the phase space integration to the $τ$ lepton phase space, one can define optimized …
Aspects of Scalar Meson Dominance in semi- and non-leptonic weak pseudoscalar meson decays are shortly discussed on the basis of the Quark-Level Linear Sigma Model.
We present a comprehensive update of the bounds on R-Parity violating supersymmetric couplings from lepton-flavour- and lepton-number-violating decay processes. We consider tau and mu decays as well as leptonic and semi-leptonic decays of mesons. We present several new bounds resulting from tau, eta and Kaon decays and correct some results in the literature concerning B-meson decays.
We study the effect of interference on the lepton number violating~(LNV) and lepton number conserving~(LNC) three-body meson decays $M_1^{+}\to l_i^{+} l_j^{\pm}π^{\mp}$, that arise in a TeV scale Left Right Symmetric model~(LRSM) with degenerate or nearly degenerate right handed~(RH) neutrinos. LRSM contains three RH neutrinos and a RH gauge boson. The RH neutrinos with masses in the range of $M_N \sim$ (MeV - few GeV) can give resonant enhancement in the semi-leptonic LNV and LNC meson decays. In the case, where only one RH neutrino contributes to these decays, the predicted new physics bran…
The anomalies recently reported in lepton pair transitions of $^8$Be$^*$ and $^4$He nuclei may be attributed to the existence of a feebly interacting light vector boson $X17$. We study the effects of this hypothetical particle in the semileptonic $H^* \to H e^+e^-$ decays ($H$ a $Q\bar{q}$ meson) in the framework of the HQET+VMD model. Using current bounds and the universality assumption of the $X17$ boson to quarks, we find that decays of $D^{*+}$ and $D_s^{*+}$ mesons can be importantly enhanced relative to the dominant photon-mediated contributions. Dedicated experimental searches at curren…
The study of the purely leptonic decays of the ground charged vector mesons is very interesting and significant in determining the CKM matrix elements, obtaining the decay constant of vector mesons, examining the lepton flavor universality, and searching for new physics beyond the standard model. These purely leptonic decays of the ground charged vector mesons are induced by the weak interactions within the standard model, and usually have very small branching ratios, ${\cal B}(ρ^{-}{\to}{\ell}^{-}ν_{\ell})$ ${\sim}$ ${\cal O}(10^{-13})$, ${\cal B}(K^{{\ast}-}{\to}{\ell}^{-}ν_{\ell})$ ${\sim}$…
We review the physics of purely leptonic decays of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ pseudoscalar mesons. The measured decay rates are related to the product of the relevant weak-interaction-based CKM matrix element of the constituent quarks and a strong interaction parameter related to the overlap of the quark and antiquark wave-functions in the meson, called the decay constant $f_P$. The interplay between theory and experiment is different for each particle. Theoretical predictions of $f_B$ that are needed in the $B$ sector can be tested by measuring $f_{D^+}$ and $f_{D_s^+…

Leptonic and semi-leptonic $D$ decays at BESIII contribute the most precise experimental measurement of $|V_{cs(d)}|$ and form factor $f_{D_{(s)}}$ in the world based on 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ and 3.19 fb$^{-1}$ data taken at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s} = 3.773$ and 4.180~GeV, respectively. The largest samples at the mass threshold of the charmed hardons $D_{(s)}$ also provide chances to extract form factors of some semi-electronic decays for the first time and together with the semi-muonic decays we could understand lepton flavour universality better.
The unusual multiplet structures associated with the light spin zero mesons have recently attracted a good deal of theoretical attention. Here we discuss some aspects associated with the possibility of getting new experimental information on this topic from semi-leptonic decays of heavy charged mesons into an isosinglet scalar or pseudoscalar plus leptons.
The QCD anomaly leads to an abnormal mixing and mass pattern for the pseudoscalar mesons. Furthermore it is responsible for the quality of isospin symmetry in the meson spectrum. Similarities between the large mixing angles among the neutral 0^-+ mesons and the large mixing angles observed in neutrino oscillations are pointed out.
In this work, we investigate the radiative leptonic decays D_(s)^- \to γ\ell \barν(\ell = e, μ) at tree level within the non-relativistic consistuent quark model and the effective Lagrangian for the heavy flavor decays. We find that the contributions for the three Feynman diagrams are all important. With the full calculation, the decay branching ratios are of the order of 10^-5 for D_s^- \to γ\ell \barνand 10^-6 for D^- \to γ\ell \barν, respectively. These decays can be measured at B factories and future CLEO-C experiments to determine the decay constants f_D_s and f_D.
Nucleon antinucleon annihilation into a near backward (or forward) produced meson and a high invariant mass lepton pair admits a factorized description in terms of antinucleon (or nucleon) distribution amplitudes and nucleon to meson (or antinucleon to meson) transition distribution amplitudes. We estimate the cross section of backward (and forward) pion and eta meson production in association with a high invariant mass lepton pair for the kinematical conditions of GSI-FAIR. The cross sections are found to be large enough to be measured with the PANDA detector. Interesting phenomenological app…
We study the masses and decay constants of heavy-light flavour mesons D, Ds, B and Bs in a QCD Potential model. The mesonic wavefunction is used to compute the masses of D and B mesons in the ground state and the wavefunction is transformed to momentum space to estimate the pseudoscalar decay constants of these mesons. The leptonic decay widths and branching ratio of these mesons for different leptonic channels are also computed to compare with the experimental values. The results are found to be compatible with available data.
An update is given of the determination of leptonic decay constants of charm and beauty mesons in the framework of relativistic Hilbert moments and Laplace transform QCD sum rules.
We review the detection of the Delta L=2 semileptonic meson decays of the form M(+) -> M'(-) lepton(+) lepton(-) that we studied in a previous work, mediated by a Majorana neutrino with a mass in the range between the masses of the initial and final mesons. For such range of masses, the Majorana neutrino will go on its mass shell and the two charged leptons will appear at displaced vertices or, if the lifetime is long enough, most secondary vertices will fall outside the detector. We study the consequences of this effect on the experimental searches and limits that can be extracted.
In this article, we propose a novel approach to measure the branching ratios of the leptonic eta(')-> mu+mu- decays by using charmed meson decays, namely, D+(s)->pi+ eta(')(->mu+mu-) and D0->K-pi+eta(')(->mu+mu-). We advocate that the data available at LHCb can already yield a new measurement of Br(eta->mu+mu-) with accuracy competitive with the current world average. We also estimate that using the data collected by LHCb between 2015 and 2018 in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0/fb, the relative uncertainties to thi…
Non-leptonic decays of B mesons into two mesons or meson resonances are studied on the basis of two versions of simple pole-dominance models involving scalar, vector, pseudoscalar and axial-vector poles. The results are compared with those obtained from the usual factorization model and used to obtain information on strong coupling constants between B meson and one light or one charmed meson, respectively. These coupling constants are compared to results from various QCD sum rule calculations.
A theory of lepton decay constants based on the path-integral formalism is given for chiral and vector mesons. Decay constants of the pseudoscalar and vector mesons are calculated and compared to other existing results.
The spectra and branching ratios of the weak semi-leptonic B meson decays to the first excited D mesons are predicted, taking into account the confined effects of quarks using the covariant oscillator quark model (COQM). In the COQM the same relation between general weak transition form factors as that in HQET is derived, and the concrete form of the Isgur-Wise function is given with no free parameters. Our results are somewhat different from those of other models. The present experimental data are not sufficient for comparison.
Theoretical computations on the decays of $B_c$ meson to $P$-wave charmonium $χ_c$ or $h_c$ with some particle(s) else and on the decays of $B_c$ meson to leptons with gluon bremsstrahlung, and the results as well are outlined.
In the present work, $D_{s}$ and $B_{s}$ meson parameters are investigated in the framework of thermal QCD sum rules. The temperature dependence of the mass and the leptonic decay constants are investigated by using Borel transform sum rules and Hilbert moment sum rules. To increase sensitivity, the vacuum contributions are subtracted from thermal expressions and the temperature dependences of the leptonic decay constants and meson masses are studied.
We study meson decays mediated by the heavy gauge bosons of the Pati-Salam model of quark-lepton unification. We consider the scenarios in which the tau lepton is associated with the third, second, and first generation of quarks. The most sensitive probes, depending on the scenario, are rare K, pi, and B decays.
Non-leptonic D meson decays may provide a reliable testbed for the multiquark interpretation of light scalar mesons. In this letter we consider D_s decay and show that a 4-quark f_0(980) meson could induce a decay pattern, which is forbidden for a q-qbar constituent structure. Experimental tests to probe such possibilities are within reach in the near future.
Within the framework of the factorization approximation, two body non-leptonic decays of $B$ mesons are related to semileptonic matrix elements and form factors, evaluated with an effective lagrangian incorporating both chiral and heavy quark symmetries. Using semileptonic $D$-decay data, estimates for nonleptonic processes are obtained.
In this paper, the semileptonic decays of heavy mesons are treated fully relativistically. By means of an effective vertex, the effect of Fermi momentum are included both at the inclusive and at the exclusive levels, and the spin of both parent and daughter particles are taken into account. The differential decay rates with respect to the lepton energy and momentum transfer are compared with data from ARGUS and CLEO.
In the framework of QCD sum rules one uses a scheme, allowing one to apply the conditions of both nonrelativistic heavy quark motion inside mesons and independence of nonsplitting nS-state density on the heavy quark flavours. In the leading order an analitic expression is derived for leptonic constants of both heavy quarkonia and heavy mesons with a single heavy quark. The expression allows one explicitly to determine scaling properties of the constants.
We employ the relativistic constituent quark model to give a unified description of the leptonic and semileptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons (π, K, D, D_s, B, B_s). The calculated leptonic decay constants and form factors are found to be in good agreement with available experimental data and other approaches. We reproduce the results of spin-flavor symmetry in the heavy quark limit.
Investigating leptonic decays of pi^-, K^-, B^-, pi^0, K_L^0, B_s^0 we present new bounds on some products of two R-parity violating coupling constants. For mesons of a similar structure but so far poor experimental data we give the corresponding formulae, to be used in the future.
The non-leptonic two body decays of D mesons are studied in the framework of an improved factorization approximation. The final state interaction effects are taken into account assuming them dominated by nearby resonances. The agreement with experimental data is quite good. CP-violating asymmetries are predicted.
Using the description of the subprocess $γγ^*\to S(P)$ in terms of local Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model we calculate the cross sections of photoproduction of scalar and pseudoscalar mesons in high energy photon-lepton collisions processes. The dependence on the transversal momentum and the total cross sections in Weizsaecker-Williams approximation are presented.
We investigate the lepton flavor violation decays of vector mesons in the scenario of the unparticle physics by considering the constraint from $μ-e$ conversion. In unparticle physics, the predictions of LFV decays of vector mesons depend strongly on the scale dimension $d_{\mathcal{U}}$. The predictions of LFV decays of vector mesons can reach the detective sensitivity in experiment in region of $3\le d_{\mathcal{U}}\le 4$, while the prediction of $μ-e$ conversion rate can meet the experimental upper limit. For the searching of the lepton flavor violation processes of charged lepton sector in…
In the framework of the Standard Model we present predictions for partial widths, double and single differential distributions, and forward--backward lepton asymmetries for four-leptonic decays $B^- \to μ^+μ^- {\bar ν}_e\, e^-$, $B^- \to e^+ e^- {\bar ν}_μ\,μ^-$, $B^- \to μ^+ μ^-{\bar ν}_μ\,μ^-$, and $B^- \to e^+ e^- {\bar ν}_e\, e^-$. We consider the contributions of virtual photon emission from the light and heavy quarks of the $B^-$--meson, and we include bremsstrahlung of a virtual photon from the charged lepton in the final state. We use the model of vector meson dominance for calculation…
Two-body non-leptonic decays of B mesons into PT and VT modes are calculated using the non-relativistic quark model of Isgur et al.. The predictions obtained for $B \to πD^*_2, ρD_2^*$ are a factor of $3\sim 5$ below present experimental upper limits. Interesting patterns are obtained for ratios of B decays involving mesons with different spin excitations and their relevance for additional tests of forms factor models are briefly discussed.
The evaluation, systematic analysis and numerical study of the semileptonic $τ$-lepton decays with two mesons in the final state has been made in the frame of the standard model extended by right handed neutrinos. In the analysis, heavy-neutrino nondecoupling effects, finite quark masses, quark and meson mixings, finite widths of vector mesons, chiral symmetry breakings in vector-meson--pseudoscalar-meson vertices and effective Higgs-boson--pseudoscalar-meson couplings have been included. Numerical estimates reveal that the decays $τ^-\to e^-π^-π^+$, $τ^-\to e^-K^-K^+$ and $τ^-\to e^-K^0\bar{K…
We propose a QCD-based model for calculation of the non-perturbative corrections to the factorization approximation in the decays of heavy mesons. In the framework of the model, factorization in pseudoscalar transitions holds exactly at the leading order leaving the opportunity to calculate non-leading corrections consistently.
The Cabibbo-suppressed non-leptonic decays of B (and D) mesons to final states involving tensor mesons are computed using the non-relativistic quark model of Isgur-Scora-Grinstein-Wise with the factorization hypothesis. We find that some of these B decay modes, as B --> (K^*, D^*)D^*_2, can have branching ratios as large as 6 x 10^{-5} which seems to be at the reach of future B factories.
Exclusive nonleptonic bottom meson decays are studied in the covariant osillator quark model using the factorization assumption. The main feature of this model is that it can simultaniously be applied to both heavy to heavy and heavy to light transitions, satisfying the constraints of the heavy quark effective theory (HQET) in the appropriate limit. The results obtained are in overall agreement with the present experimental data for various B decays.
In this work we study the radiative leptonic decays of $B^-$, $D^-$ and $D_s^-\to γl \barν$, including both the short-distance and long-distance contributions. The short-distance contribution is calculated by using the relativistic quark model, where the bound state wave function we used is that obtained in the relativistic potential model. The long-distance contribution is estimated by using vector meson dominance model.
I consider a model for heavy meson decays based on an effective quark-meson Lagrangian. The model is constrained by the known symmetries of QCD in the m_Q -> infinity limit for the heavy quarks, and chiral symmetry in the light quark sector. Using a limited number of free parameters it is possible to compute several phenomenological quantities, e.g. the leptonic B and B** decay constants; the Isgur-Wise form factors: xi, tau(3/2), tau (1/2), describing the semi-leptonic decays B -> D(*) l nu, B -> D** l nu; the form factors for heavy to light decays B -> rho l nu, B -> a_1 l nu. I show that th…
The measured rate for D_s -> l nu decays, where l is a muon or tau, is larger than the standard model prediction, which relies on lattice QCD, at the 3.8 sigma level. We discuss how robust the theoretical prediction is, and we show that the discrepancy with experiment may be explained by a charged Higgs boson or a leptoquark.
We consider the U(1)$_X$ model, which can induce the flavor violating couplings through vectorlike fermions and address the observed rare $B$-meson decay anomalies. To be consistent with all the other observations, both the associated gauge boson mass and the vectorlike lepton mass are bounded from above. We argue that the search for new vectorlike leptons is promising and provides a complement to the $Z'$ search. A detailed collider analysis shows that the model with the vectorlike lepton mass up to 1000 GeV could be tested at the future LHC.
