We present a new method to determine the probability distribution of the 3-D shapes of galaxy clusters from the 2-D images using stereology. In contrast to the conventional approach of combining different data sets (such as X-rays, Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect and lensing) to fit a 3-D model of a galaxy cluster for each cluster, our method requires only a single data set, such as X-ray observations or Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect observations, consisting of sufficiently large number of clusters. Instead of reconstructing the 3-D shape of an individual object, we recover the probability distribution function (PDF) of the 3-D shapes of the observed galaxy clusters. The shape PDF is the relevant statistical quantity which can be compared with the theory and used to test the cosmological models. We apply this method to publicly available \emph{Chandra} X-ray data of 89 well resolved galaxy clusters. Assuming ellipsoidal shapes, we find that our sample of galaxy clusters is a mixture of prolate and oblate shapes, with a preference for oblateness with the most probable ratio of principle axes 1.4 : 1.3 : 1. The ellipsoidal assumption is not essential to our approach and our method is directly applicable to non-ellipsoidal shapes. Our method is insensitive to the radial density and temperature profiles of the cluster. Our method is sensitive to the changes in shape of the X-ray emitting gas from inner to outer regions and we find evidence for variation in the 3-D shape of the X-ray emitting gas with distance from the centre.
Intrinsic galaxy alignments yield an important contribution to the observed statistics of galaxy shapes. The general bias expansion for galaxy sizes and shapes in three dimensions has been recently described by Vlah, Chisari \& Schmidt using the general perturbative effective field theory (EFT) framework, in analogy to the clustering of galaxies. In this work, we present a formalism that uses the properties of spherical tensors to project galaxy shapes onto the observed sky in the flat-sky approximation and compute the two-point functions at next-to-leading order as well as the leading-order t…
We study the shape of eight dynamically relaxed galaxy clusters observed with the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-Ray Observatory. Using strong and weak gravitational lensing, the shape of the Brightest Cluster Galaxy and the X-ray isophote we study the ellipticity of the cluster halo at four different radii. We find that the proxies probing the inner regions of the cluster are strongly coupled with the BCG shape correlated with both the shape predicted by strong gravitational lensing and the X-ray isophote. Conversely we find no such correlation between the shape as predicted by the weak…
The galaxies form and evolve in the early epochs through the anisotropic merging process along the primary narrow filaments, in the direction of which their shapes become elongated and intrinsically aligned. The nonlinear evolution of the cosmic web broadens the primary filaments, by entangling them with multiple secondary filaments, which has an effect of reducing the anisotropy of the merging process and in consequence weakens the galaxy shape-shape correlations in the later epochs. Assuming that the degree of the nonlinearity and complexity of the cosmic web depends on the nature of dark ma…
We analyse the impact of galaxy--halo misalignment on the ability of weak lensing studies to constrain the shape of dark matter haloes, using a combination of the Millennium dark matter N-body simulation and different semi-analytic galaxy formation models, as well as simpler Monte Carlo tests. Since the distribution of galaxy--halo alignments is not known in detail, we test various alignment models, together with different methods of determining the halo shape. In addition to alignment, we examine the interplay of halo mass and shape, and galaxy colour and morphology with the resulting stacked…
Current and future imaging surveys will measure cosmic shear with a statistical precision that demands a deeper understanding of potential systematic biases in galaxy shape measurements than has been achieved to date. We investigate the effects of using the point spread function (PSF) measured with stars to determine the shape of a galaxy that has a different spectral energy distribution (SED) than the star. We demonstrate that a wavelength dependent PSF size, for example as may originate from atmospheric seeing or the diffraction limit of the primary aperture, can introduce significant shape …
We present the on-going activity to characterize the geometrical properties of the gas and dark matter haloes using multi-wavelength observations of galaxy clusters. The role of the SZ signal in describing the gas distribution is discussed for the pilot case of the CLASH object MACS J1206.2-0847. Preliminary images of the NIKA2 and ALMA exposures are presented.
Cosmic shear is a powerful probe of cosmological parameters, but its potential can be fully utilised only if galaxy shapes are measured with great accuracy. Two major effects have been identified which are likely to account for most of the bias for maximum likelihood methods in recent shear measurement challenges. Model bias occurs when the true galaxy shape is not well represented by the fitted model. Noise bias occurs due to the non-linear relationship between image pixels and galaxy shape. In this paper we investigate the potential interplay between these two effects when an imperfect model…
We show that intrinsic (not lensing-induced) correlations between galaxy shapes offer a new probe of primordial non-Gaussianity and inflationary physics which is complementary to galaxy number counts. Specifically, intrinsic alignment correlations are sensitive to an anisotropic squeezed limit bispectrum of the primordial perturbations. Such a feature arises in solid inflation, as well as more broadly in the presence of light higher spin fields during inflation (as pointed out recently by Arkani-Hamed and Maldacena). We present a derivation of the all-sky two-point correlations of intrinsic sh…
In this paper we analyse the alignment of galaxy groups with the surrounding large scale structure traced by spectroscopic galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. We characterise these alignments by means of an extension of the classical two-point cross-correlation function, developed by Paz et al. 2008 (arXiv:0804.4477, MNRAS 389 1127). We find a strong alignment signal between the projected major axis of group shapes and the surrounding galaxy distribution up to scales of 30 Mpc/h. This observed anisotropy signal becomes larger as the galaxy group mass increases, in excell…
We present our results from training and evaluating a convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict galaxy shapes from wide-field survey images of the first data release of the Dark Energy Survey (DES DR1). We use conventional shape measurements as ground truth from an overlapping, deeper survey with less sky coverage, the Canada-France Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS). We demonstrate that CNN predictions from single band DES images reproduce the results of CFHTLenS at bright magnitudes and show higher correlation with CFHTLenS at fainter magnitudes than maximum likelihood model fitt…
We present a detailed study of the shapes and alignments of different galaxy cluster components using hydrodynamical simulations. We compute shape parameters from the Dark Matter (DM) distribution, the galaxy members and the intra-cluster light (ICL). We assess how well the DM cluster shape can be constrained by means of the identified galaxy member positions and the ICL. Further, we address the dilution factor introduced when estimating the cluster elongation using weak-lensing stacking techniques, which arises due to the misalignment between the total surface mass distribution and the distri…
[Abridged] We consider how galaxy clustering data, from Mpc to Gpc scales, from upcoming large scale structure surveys, such as Euclid and DESI, can provide discriminating information about the bispectrum shape arising from a variety of inflationary scenarios. Through exploring in detail the weighting of shape properties in the calculation of the halo bias and halo mass function we show how they probe a broad range of configurations, beyond those in the squeezed limit, that can help distinguish between shapes with similar large scale bias behaviors. We assess the impact, on constraints for a d…
It is anticipated that the large sky areas covered by planned wide-field weak lensing surveys will reduce statistical errors to such an extent that systematic errors will instead become the dominant source of uncertainty. It is therefore crucial to devise numerical methods to measure galaxy shapes with the least possible systematic errors. We present a simple "forward deconvolution" method, gfit, to measure galaxy shapes given telescope and atmospheric smearings, in the presence of noise. The method consists in fitting a single 2D elliptical Sérsic profile to the data, convolved with the point…
We propose a method to measure the ellipticities of dark matter halos using the lens-shear-shear 3-point correlation function. This method is immune to effects of galaxy-halo misalignments that can potentially limit 2-point galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements of halo anisotropy. Using a simple model for the projected mass distributions of dark matter halos, we construct an ellipticity estimator that sums over all possible triangular configurations of the 3-point function. By applying our estimator to halos from N-body simulations, we find that systematic errors in the recovered ellipticity will…
The robust estimation of the tiny distortions (shears) of galaxy shapes caused by weak gravitational lensing in the presence of much larger shape distortions due to the point-spread function (PSF) has been widely investigated. One major problem is that most galaxy shape measurement methods are subject to bias due to pixel noise in the images ("noise bias"). Noise bias is usually characterized using uncorrelated noise fields; however, real images typically have low-level noise correlations due to galaxies below the detection threshold, and some types of image processing can induce further noise…
In the standard (classic) approach, galaxy clustering measurements from spectroscopic surveys are compressed into baryon acoustic oscillations and redshift space distortions measurements, which in turn can be compared to cosmological models. Recent works have shown that avoiding this intermediate step and fitting directly the full power spectrum signal (full modelling) leads to much tighter constraints on cosmological parameters. Here we show where this extra information is coming from and extend the classic approach with one additional effective parameter, such that it captures, effectively, …
We present the analytical framework for converting projected light distributions with a Sérsic profile into three-dimensional light distributions for stellar systems of arbitrary triaxial shape. The main practical result is the definition of a simple yet robust measure of intrinsic galaxy size: the median radius $r_\mathrm{med}$, defined as the radius of a sphere that contains 50% of the total luminosity or mass, that is, the median distance of a star to the galaxy center. We examine how $r_\mathrm{med}$ depends on projected size measurements as a function of Sérsic index and intrinsic axis ra…
We demonstrate that a joint analysis of LSST-like ground-based imaging with Euclid-like space-based imaging leads to increased precision and accuracy in galaxy shape measurements. At galaxy magnitudes of $i \sim 24.5$, a combined survey analysis increases the effective galaxy number density for cosmic shear studies by $\sim 50$ percent in comparison to an analysis of each survey alone. Using a realistic distribution of galaxy sizes, ellipticities and magnitudes down to $i = 25.2$, we simulate LSST-like and Euclid-like images of over one million isolated galaxies. We compare the precision and a…
We investigate the correlations in galaxy shapes between optical and radio wavelengths using archival observations of the COSMOS field. Cross-correlation studies between different wavebands will become increasingly important for precision cosmology as future large surveys may be dominated by systematic rather than statistical errors. In the case of weak lensing, galaxy shapes must be measured to extraordinary accuracy (shear systematics of $< 0.01\%$) in order to achieve good constraints on dark energy parameters. By using shape information from overlapping surveys in optical and radio bands, …
Parametrising galaxy morphologies is a challenging task, e.g., in shear measurements of weak lensing or investigations of galaxy evolution. The huge variety of morphologies requires an approach that is highly flexible, e.g., accounting for azimuthal structure. We revisit the method of sersiclets, where galaxy morphologies are decomposed into basis functions based on the Sersic profile. This approach is justified by the fact that the Sersic profile is the first-order Taylor expansion of any real light profile. We show that sersiclets overcome the modelling failures of shapelets. However, sersic…
X-ray observations of galaxy clusters have detected numerous X-ray cavities, evolved from the interaction of AGN jets with the intracluster medium (ICM) and providing compelling evidence for the importance of jet-mode AGN feedback. Here we argue for the physical importance of the cavity shape, which we characterize with two geometric parameters: radial elongation $τ$ and top wideness $b$. We study the cavity shape with 16 hydrodynamic jet simulations in two representative clusters, and find that the shapes of young cavities are mainly determined by various jet properties. Our simulations succe…
If properly calibrated, the shapes of galaxy clusters can be used to investigate many physical processes: from feedback and quenching of star formation, to the nature of dark matter. Theorists frequently measure shapes using moments of inertia of simulated particles'. We instead create mock (optical, X-ray, strong- and weak-lensing) observations of the twenty-two most massive ($\sim10^{14.7}\,M_\odot$) relaxed clusters in the BAHAMAS simulations. We find that observable measures of shape are rounder. Even when moments of inertia are projected into 2D and evaluated at matched radius, they overe…
We describe a simple and fast method to correct ellipticity measurements of galaxies from the distortion by the instrumental and atmospheric point spread function (PSF), in view of weak lensing shear measurements. The method performs a classification of galaxies and associated PSFs according to measured shape parameters, and corrects the measured galaxy ellipticites by querying a large lookup table (LUT), built by supervised learning. We have applied this new method to the GREAT10 image analysis challenge, and present in this paper a refined solution that obtains the competitive quality factor…
The statistical properties of the ellipticities of galaxy images depend on how galaxies form and evolve, and therefore constrain models of galaxy morphology, which are key to the removal of the intrinsic alignment contamination of cosmological weak lensing surveys, as well as to the calibration of weak lensing shape measurements. We construct such models based on the halo properties of the Millennium Simulation and confront them with a sample of 90,000 galaxies from the COSMOS Survey, covering three decades in luminosity and redshifts out to z=2. The ellipticity measurements are corrected for …
Correlations between intrinsic galaxy shapes on large-scales arise due to the effect of the tidal field of the large-scale structure. Anisotropic primordial non-Gaussianity induces a distinct scale-dependent imprint in these tidal alignments on large scales. Motivated by the observational finding that the alignment strength of luminous red galaxies depends on how galaxy shapes are measured, we study the use of two different shape estimators as a multi-tracer probe of intrinsic alignments. We show, by means of a Fisher analysis, that this technique promises a significant improvement on anisotro…
We identify low redshift clusters and groups in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and estimate their kinetic and correlation potential energies. We compare the distribution of these energies to the predictions by Yang and Saslaw (2012) and in the process estimate a measure of an average 3-dimensional velocity and spatial anisotropy of a sample of clusters. We find that the inferred velocity anisotropy is correlated with the inferred spatial anisotropy. We also find that the general shape of the energy distribution agrees with theory over a wide range of scales from small groups to superclust…
By modelling the axis ratio distribution of SDSS DR8 galaxies we find the intrinsic 3D shapes of spirals and ellipticals. We use morphological information from the Galaxy Zoo project and assume a non-parametric distribution intrinsic of shapes, while taking into account dust extinction. We measure the dust extinction of the full sample of spiral galaxies and find a smaller value than previous estimations, with an edge-on extinction of $E_0 = 0.284^{+0.015}_{-0.026}$ in the SDSS r band. We also find that the distribution of minor to major axis ratio has a mean value of $ 0.267 \pm 0.009 $, slig…
Meneghetti et al. (2020) recently reported an excess of galaxy-galaxy strong lensing (GGSL) in galaxy clusters compared to expectations from the LCDM cosmological model. Theoretical estimates of the GGSL probability are based on the analysis of numerical hydrodynamical simulations in the LCDM cosmology. We quantify the impact of the numerical resolution and AGN feedback scheme adopted in cosmological simulations on the predicted GGSL probability and determine if varying these simulation properties can alleviate the gap with observations. We repeat the analysis of Meneghetti et al. (2020) on cl…
In this work, we studied the impact of galaxy morphology on photometric redshift (photo-$z$) probability density functions (PDFs). By including galaxy morphological parameters like the radius, axis-ratio, surface brightness and the Sérsic index in addition to the $ugriz$ broadbands as input parameters, we used the machine learning photo-$z$ algorithm ANNz2 to train and test on galaxies from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Stripe-82 (CS82) Survey. Metrics like the continuous ranked probability score (CRPS), probability integral transform (PIT), Bayesian odds parameter, and even the width and…
We develop a general theory for estimating the probability that a galaxy cluster of a given shape exists. The theory is based on the observed result that the distribution of galaxies is very close to quasi-equilibrium, in both its linear and nonlinear regimes. This places constraints on the spatial configuration of a cluster of galaxies in quasi-equilibrium. In particular, we show that that a cluster of galaxies may be described as a collection of nearly virialized subclusters of approximately the same mass. Clusters that contain more than 10 subclusters are very likely to be completely virial…
Intrinsic galaxy alignments are a source of bias for weak lensing measurements as well as a tool for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. In this work, we measure the alignment of shapes of satellite galaxies, in galaxy groups, with respect to the brightest group galaxy (BGG), as well as alignments of the BGG shape with the satellite positions, using the highly complete Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) spectroscopic survey and deep imaging from the Kilo Degree Survey. We control systematic errors with dedicated image simulations and measure accurate shapes using the DEIMOS shape measur…
Galaxy imaging surveys provide us with information on both the galaxy distribution and their shapes. In this paper, we systematically investigate the sensitivity of galaxy shapes to new physics in the initial conditions. For this purpose, we decompose the galaxy shape function into spin components, and compute the contributions to each spin component from both intrinsic alignment and weak lensing. We then consider the angular-dependent primordial non-Gaussianity, which is generated by a non-zero integer spin particle when active during inflation, and show that a galaxy imaging survey essential…
We present a numerical evidence supporting the scenario that the peculiar alignments of the galaxy stellar spins with the major principal axes of the local tidal tensors are produced during the quiescent evolution period when the galaxies experience no recent merger events. Analyzing the merger tree from the TNG300-1 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project, we find the latest merger epochs, $a(z_{m})$, of the galaxies, and create four $a(z_{m})$-selected samples that are controlled to share the identical mass and density distributions. For each sample, we determine the spin and shape vectors of…
Intrinsic galaxy alignments constitute the major astrophysical systematic of forthcoming weak gravitational lensing surveys but also yield unique insights into galaxy formation and evolution. We build analytic models for the distribution of galaxy shapes based on halo properties extracted from the Millennium Simulation, differentiating between early- and late-type galaxies as well as central galaxies and satellites. The resulting ellipticity correlations are investigated for their physical properties and compared to a suite of current observations. The best-faring model is then used to predict…
We show that dust absorption in disk galaxies leads to a color- and orientation-dependent centroid shift which is expected to be observable in multi-band imaging surveys. This centroid shift is an interesting new probe which contains astrophysically and cosmologically relevant information: it can be used to probe the dust content of a large sample of galaxies, and to reduce the shape noise due to inclination of disk galaxies for weak lensing shear. Specifically, we find that data sets comparable to CFHTLenS, the Dark Energy Survey (DES) or the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey should provide a du…
In this paper, we present a new derivation of the shape and evolution of the integrated galaxy-wide initial mass function (IGIMF), incorporating explicitly the effects of cosmic rays (CRs) as regulators of the chemical and thermal state of the gas in the dense cores of molecular clouds. We predict the shape of the IGIMF as a function of star formation rate (SFR) and CR density, and show that it can be significantly different with respect to local estimates. In particular, we focus on the physical conditions corresponding to IGIMF shapes that are simultaneously shallower at high-mass end and st…
Weak lensing shear estimation typically results in per galaxy statistical errors significantly larger than the sought after gravitational signal of only a few percent. These statistical errors are mostly a result of shape-noise -- an estimation error due to the diverse (and a-priori unknown) morphology of individual background galaxies. These errors are inversely proportional to the limiting angular resolution at which localized objects, such as galaxy clusters, can be probed with weak lensing shear. In this work we report on our initial attempt to reduce statistical errors in weak lensing she…
The $Λ$CDM model of structure formation makes strong predictions on concentration and shape of DM (dark matter) halos, which are determined by mass accretion processes. Comparison between predicted shapes and observations provides a geometric test of the $Λ$CDM model. Accurate and precise measurements needs a full three-dimensional analysis of the cluster mass distribution. We accomplish this with a multi-probe 3D analysis of the X-ray regular CLASH (Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble) clusters combining strong and weak lensing, X-ray photometry and spectroscopy, and the Sunyaev-…
(Abridged) We examine the effects of charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) during CCD readout on galaxy shape measurements required by studies of weak gravitational lensing. We simulate a CCD readout with CTI such as that caused by charged particle radiation damage. We verify our simulations on data from laboratory-irradiated CCDs. Only charge traps with time constants of the same order as the time between row transfers during readout affect galaxy shape measurements. We characterize the effects of CTI on various galaxy populations. We baseline our study around p-channel CCDs that have been shown…
The intrinsic scatter in the ellipticities of galaxies about the mean shape, known as "shape noise," is the most important source of noise in weak lensing shear measurements. Several approaches to reducing shape noise have recently been put forward, using information beyond photometry, such as radio polarization and optical spectroscopy. Here we investigate how well the intrinsic ellipticities of galaxies can be predicted using other, exclusively photometric parameters. These parameters (such as galaxy colours) are already available in the data and do not necessitate additional, often expensiv…
We quantify to what extent tidal erosion of globular clusters (GCs) has contributed to the observed u-shaped relation between GC specific frequencies S_N and host galaxy luminosity M_V. We used our MUESLI code to calculate GC survival rates for typical early-type galaxy potentials covering a wide range of observed galaxy properties. We do this for isotropic and radially anisotropic GC velocity distributions. We find that the calculated GC survival fraction, f_s, depends linearly on the logarithm of the 3D mass density, rho_3D, within the galaxy's half light radius, with f_s proportional to (rh…
We prove from the modified gravity (MG) galaxy/halo mock catalogs that the shape of the pairwise kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) power spectrum $P_{\rm kSZ}$ has constraining power on discriminating different gravity theories on cosmological scales. By varying the effective optical depth $τ_{\rm T}$ as a free parameter, we verify that the $τ_{\rm T}$-$f$ (the linear growth rate) degeneracy in the linear theory of $P_{\rm kSZ}$ is broken down by the non-linear structure growth and the scale-dependence of $f$ in some MG theories. Equivalently speaking, the shape of $P_{\rm kSZ}$ alone could be…
Measurements of intrinsic alignments of galaxy shapes with the large-scale density field, and the inferred intrinsic alignments model parameters, are sensitive to the shape measurement methods used. In this paper we measure the intrinsic alignments of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III (SDSS-III) Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) LOWZ galaxies using three different shape measurement methods (re-Gaussianization, isophotal, and de Vaucouleurs), identifying a variation in the inferred intrinsic alignments amplitude at the 40% level between these methods, independent of the galaxy lumin…
Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey we study correlations between directions of galaxy angular momenta determined from images of spiral galaxies and various observables derived from the reconstructed initial conditions. We find an apparent systematic effect consistent with galaxy-orientation-dependent selection function. After restricting our attention to the brightest half of the galaxies where this systematic effect is presumed to be absent, we find hints of excess/deficit correlation for two observables. Interestingly, tidal torque theory predicts excess/deficit correlation in exac…
Radio weak lensing, while a highly promising complementary probe to optical weak lensing, will require incredible precision in the measurement of galaxy shape parameters. In this paper, we extend the Bayesian Inference for Radio Observations model fitting approach to measure galaxy shapes directly from visibility data of radio continuum surveys, instead of from image data. We apply a Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) technique for sampling the posterior, which is more efficient than the standard Monte Carlo Markov Chain method when dealing with a large dimensional parameter space. Adopting the exp…
Cross-correlating the lensing signals of galaxies and comic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations is expected to provide valuable cosmological information. In particular it may help tighten constraints on parameters describing the properties of intrinsically aligned galaxies at high redshift. To access the information conveyed by the cross-correlation signal its accurate theoretical description is required. We compute the bias to CMB lensing-galaxy shape cross-correlation measurements induced by nonlinear structure growth. Using tree-level perturbation theory for the large-scale structure bi…
The subject of this paper is to build a physical model describing shape and size correlations of galaxies due to weak gravitational lensing and due to direct tidal interaction of elliptical galaxies with gravitational fields sourced by the cosmic large-scale structure. Setting up a linear intrinsic alignment model for elliptical galaxies which parameterises the reaction of the galaxy to an external tidal shear field is controlled by the velocity dispersion, we predict intrinsic correlations and cross-correlations with weak lensing for both shapes and sizes, juxtaposing both types of spectra wi…
As a large-scale overdensity collapses, it affects the orientation and shape of galaxies that form, by exerting tidal shear along their axes. Therefore, the shapes of elliptical galaxies align with the tidal field of cosmic structures. This intrinsic alignment provides insights into galaxy formation and the primordial universe, complements late-time cosmological probes and constitutes a significant systematic effect for weak gravitational lensing observations. In the present study, we provide constraints on the linear alignment model using a fully Bayesian field-level approach, using galaxy sh…
Galaxy shapes have been observed to align with external tidal fields generated by the large-scale structures of the Universe. While the main source for these tidal fields is provided by long-wavelength density perturbations, tensor perturbations also contribute with a non-vanishing amplitude at linear order. We show that parity-breaking gravitational waves produced during inflation leave a distinctive imprint in the galaxy shape power spectrum which is not hampered by any scalar-induced tidal field. We also show that a certain class of tensor non-Gaussianities produced during inflation can lea…
It has been shown, both in simulations and observationally, that the tidal field of a large galaxy can torque its satellites such that the major axis of satellite galaxies points towards their hosts. This so-called `shape alignment' has been observed in isolated Milky Way-like galaxies but not in `Local Group'-like pairs. In this study, we investigate the shape alignment of satellite galaxies in galaxy pairs similar to the Local Group identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 13 (SDSS DR13). By stacking tens of thousands of satellite galaxies around primary galaxy pairs, we find …

We present a novel simulation-based cosmological analysis of galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy redshift-space clustering. Compared to analysis methods based on perturbation theory, our simulation-based approach allows us to probe a much wider range of scales, $0.4 \, h^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}$ to $63 \, h^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}$, including highly non-linear scales, and marginalises over astrophysical effects such as assembly bias. We apply this framework to data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey LOWZ sample cross-correlated with state-of-the-art gravitational lensing catalogues from t…
Weak gravitational lensing has the potential to constrain cosmological parameters to high precision. However, as shown by the Shear TEsting Programmes (STEP) and GRavitational lEnsing Accuracy Testing (GREAT) Challenges, measuring galaxy shears is a nontrivial task: various methods introduce different systematic biases which have to be accounted for. We investigate how pixel noise on the image affects the bias on shear estimates from a Maximum-Likelihood forward model-fitting approach using a sum of co-elliptical Sérsic profiles, in complement to the theoretical approach of an an associated pa…
