As various quantum computing technologies continue to compete for quantum supremacy, several parameters have emerged as benchmarks for the quality of qubits. These include fidelity, coherence times, connectivity, and a few others. In this paper, we aim to study the importance of these parameters and their impact on quantum algorithms. We propose a realistic connectivity geometry and form quantum circuits for the Bernstein-Vazirani, QFT, and Grover Algorithms based on the limitations of the chosen geometry. We then simulate these algorithms using error models to study the impact of gate fidelity and coherence times on success of the algorithms. We report on the findings of our simulations and note the various benchmarking values which produce reliably successful results.
We investigate the coherence measures induced by fidelity and trace norm, based on the recent proposed coherence quantification in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 140401, 2014]. We show that the fidelity of coherence does not in general satisfy the monotonicity requirement as a measure of coherence under the subselection of measurements condition. We find that the trace norm of coherence can act as a measure of coherence for qubit case and some special class of qutrits.
Purity and coherence of a quantum state are recognized as useful resources for various information processing tasks. In this article, we propose a fidelity based valid measure of purity and coherence monotone and establish a relationship between them. This formulation of coherence is extended to quantum correlation relative to measurement. We have also studied the role of weak measurement on purity.
A fundamental task in any physical theory is to quantify certain physical quantity in a meaningful way. In this paper we show that both fidelity distance and affinity distance satisfy the strong contractibility, and the corresponding resource quantifiers can be used to characterize a large class of resource theories. Under two assumptions, namely, convexity of "free states" and closure of free states under "selective free operations", our general framework of resource theory includes quantum resource theories of entanglement, coherence, partial coherence and superposition. In partial coherence…
Quantifying coherence is an essential endeavor for both quantum foundations and quantum technologies. In this paper, we put forward a quantitative measure of coherence by following the axiomatic definition of coherence measures introduced in [T. Baumgratz, M. Cramer, and M. B. Plenio, Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 140401 (2014)]. Our measure is based on fidelity and analytically computable for arbitrary states of a qubit. As one of its applications, we show that our measure can be used to examine whether a pure qubit state can be transformed into another pure or mixed qubit state only by incoherent op…
Lasers and Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) exhibit macroscopic quantum coherence in seemingly unrelated ways. Lasers possess a well-defined global phase and are characterized by large fluctuations in the number of photons. In BECs of atoms, instead, the number of particles is conserved and the global phase is undefined. Here, we present a unified framework to simulate lasers and BECs states in gate-based quantum computers, by mapping bosonic particles to qubit excitations. Our approach relies on a scalable circuit that measures the total number of particles without destroying long-range coher…
By utilizing single particle interferometry, the fidelity or coherence of a pair of quantum states is identified with their capacity for interference. We consider processes acting on the internal degree of freedom (e.g., spin or polarization) of the interfering particle, preparing it in states ρ_{A} or ρ_{B} in the respective path of the interferometer. The maximal visibility depends on the choice of interferometer, as well as the locality or non-locality of the preparations, but otherwise depends only on the states ρ_{A} and ρ_{B} and not the individual preparation processes themselves. This …
We propose the notion of faithful coherent states based on the fidelity-based coherence witness. The criterion for detecting faithful coherent states can be restricted to a subclass of fidelity-based criterion under unitary transformations for single and bipartite systems. We can realize these unitary transformations by using quantum gates and circuits, and establish the connection of faithful coherence states and coherence distillation, maximum relative entropy of coherence.
Experimentally quantifying entanglement and coherence are extremely important for quantum resource theory. However, because the quantum state tomography requires exponentially growing measurements with the number of qubits, it is hard to quantify entanglement and coherence based on the full information of the experimentally realized multipartite states. Fortunately, other methods have been found to directly measure the fidelity of experimental states without quantum state tomography. Here we present a fidelity-based method to derive experimentally accessible lower bounds for measures of genuin…
Unsharp POVM measurements allow the estimation and tracking of quantum wavefunctions in real-time with minimal disruption of the dynamics. Here we demonstrate that high fidelity state monitoring, and hence quantum control, is possible even in the presence of classical dephasing and amplitude noise, by simulating such measurements on a two-level system undergoing Rabi oscillations. Finite estimation fidelity is found to persist indefinitely long after the decoherence times set by the noise fields in the absence of measurement.
Recent progress in resource theory of quantum coherence has resulted in measures to quantify coherence in quantum systems. Especially, the l1-norm and relative entropy of coherence have been shown to be proper quantifiers of coherence and have been used to investigate coherence properties in different operational tasks. Since long-lasting quantum coherence has been experimentally confirmed in a number of photosynthetic complexes, it has been debated if and how coherence is connected to the known efficiency of population transfer in such systems. In this study, we investigate quantitatively the…
The fidelity of the gate operation and the coherence time of neutral atoms trapped in an optical dipole trap are figures of merit for the applications. The motion of the trapped atom is one of the key factors which influence the gate fidelity and coherence time. The motion has been considered as a classical oscillator in analyzing the influence. Here we treat the motion of the atom as a quantum oscillator. The population on the vibrational states of the atom are considered in analyzing the gate fidelity and decoherence. We show that the fidelity of a coherent rotation gate is dramatically limi…
We describe an efficient and scalable framework for modeling crosstalk effects on quantum information processors. By applying optimal control techniques, we show how to tuneup arbitrary high-fidelity parallel operations on systems with substantial local and nonlocal crosstalk. Simulations show drastically lower error rates for a 2D square array of 100 superconducting transmon qubits. These results suggest that rather than striving to engineer away undesirable interactions during fabrication, we can largely mitigate their effects through careful characterization and control optimization.
We propose an all-optical experiment to quantify non-Markovianity in an open quantum system through quantum coherence of a single quantum bit. We use an amplitude damping channel implemented by an optical setup with an intense laser beam simulating a single-photon polarization. The optimization over initial states required to quantify non-Markovianity is analytically evaluated. The experimental results are in a very good agreement with the theoretical predictions.
Long coherence times, large anharmonicity and robust charge-noise insensitivity render fluxonium qubits an interesting alternative to transmons. Recent experiments have demonstrated record coherence times for low-frequency fluxonia. Here, we propose a galvanic-coupling scheme with flux-tunable $\textit{XX}$ coupling. To implement a high-fidelity entangling $\sqrt{i\mathrm{SWAP}}$ gate, we modulate the strength of this coupling and devise variable-time identity gates to synchronize required single-qubit operations. Both types of gates are implemented using strong ac flux drives, lasting for onl…
In quantum information, most information processing processes involve quantum channels. One manifestation of a quantum channel is quantum operation acting on quantum states. The coherence of quantum operations can be considered as a quantum resource, which can be exploited to perform certain quantum tasks. From the viewpoint of Choi-Jamiołkowski isomorphism, we study the coherence of quantum operations in the framework of resource theory. We define the phase-out superoperation and give the operation which transforms the Choi-Jamiołkowski state of a quantum operation to the Choi-Jamiołkowski st…
We present quantum fidelity benchmarks for continuous-variable (CV) quantum devices to outperform quantum channels which can transmit at most $k$-dimensional coherences for positive integers $k$. We determine an upper bound of an average fidelity over Gaussian distributed coherent states for quantum channels whose Schmidt class is $k$. This settles fundamental fidelity steps where the known classical limit and quantum limit correspond to the two endpoints of $k=1$ and $k= \infty $, respectively. It turns out that the average fidelity is useful to verify to what extent an experimental CV gate c…
The resource theory of quantum coherence is an important topic in quantum information science. Standard coherence distillation and dilution problems have been thoroughly studied. In this paper, we introduce and study the problem of one-shot coherence distillation with catalysts. In order to distill more coherence from a state of interest, a catalytic system can be involved and a jointly free operation is applied to both systems. The joint output state should be a maximally coherent state in tensor product with the unchanged catalysts, with some allowable fidelity error. We consider several dif…
We analyze the fidelity of the generalized Pauli channels governed by memory kernel master equations. It is shown that, by appropriate engineering of parameters of the corresponding memory kernel, the quantum evolution with non-local noise can have higher fidelity than the corresponding purely Markovian evolution governed by the Markovian semigroup. Similar engineering can substantially influence the evolution of quantum entanglement, entropy, and quantum coherence.
Typical studies of quantum error correction assume probabilistic Pauli noise, largely because it is relatively easy to analyze and simulate. Consequently, the effective logical noise due to physically realistic coherent errors is relatively unknown. Here, we prove that encoding a system in a stabilizer code and measuring error syndromes decoheres errors, that is, causes coherent errors to converge toward probabilistic Pauli errors, even when no recovery operations are applied. Two practical consequences are that the error rate in a logical circuit is well quantified by the average gate fidelit…
Coherence distillation is a basic information-theoretic task in the resource theory of coherence. In this paper, we develop the framework of the approximate coherence distillation under strictly incoherent operations. This protocol considers the situation that we cannot transform an initial state $ρ$ into a target state $ψ$ with certainty; instead, we aim to deterministically transform the initial state $ρ$ into an intermediate state $ϕ$ that is most approximate to the target state $ψ$ in terms of fidelity. We also present the explicit conversion strategy of the approximate coherence distillat…
We establish two complementarity relations for the relative entropy of coherence in quantum information processing, i.e., quantum dense coding and teleportation. We first give an uncertaintylike expression relating local quantum coherence to the capacity of optimal dense coding for bipartite system. The relation can also be applied to the case of dense coding by using unital memoryless noisy quantum channels. Further, the relation between local quantum coherence and teleportation fidelity for two-qubit system is given.
Coherence, being at the heart of interference phenomena, is found to be an useful resource in quantum information theory. Here we want to understand quantum coherence under the combination of two fundamentally dual processes, viz., cloning and deleting. We found the role of quantum cloning and deletion machines with the consumption and generation of quantum coherence. We establish cloning as a cohering process and deletion as a decohering process. Fidelity of the process will be shown to have connection with coherence generation and consumption of the processes.
Quantum coherence, a basic feature of quantum mechanics residing in superpositions of quantum states, is a resource for quantum information processing. Coherence emerges in a fundamentally different way for nonidentical and identical particles, in that for the latter a unique contribution exists linked to indistinguishability which cannot occur for nonidentical particles. We experimentally demonstrate by an optical setup this additional contribution to quantum coherence, showing that its amount directly depends on the degree of indistinguishability and exploiting it to run a quantum phase disc…
The speed of quantum gates and measurements is a decisive factor for the overall fidelity of quantum protocols when performed on physical qubits with finite coherence time. Reducing the time required to distinguish qubit states with high fidelity is therefore a critical goal in quantum information science. The state-of-the-art readout of superconducting qubits is based on the dispersive interaction with a readout resonator. Here, we bring this technique to its current limit and demonstrate how the careful design of system parameters leads to fast and high-fidelity measurements without affectin…

We explore the feasibility of implementing a small surface code with 9 data qubits and 8 ancilla qubits, commonly referred to as surface-17, using a linear chain of 171Yb+ ions. Two-qubit gates can be performed between any two ions in the chain with gate time increasing linearly with ion distance. Measurement of the ion state by fluorescence requires that the ancilla qubits be physically separated from the data qubits to avoid errors on the data due to scattered photons. We minimize the time required to measure one round of stabilizers by optimizing the mapping of the two-dimensional surface c…
In this work, we address the problem of maximizing fidelity in a quantum state transformation process controlled in such a way as to keep decoherence within given bounds. We consider a three-level $Λ$-type atom subjected to Markovian decoherence characterized by non-unital decoherence channels. We introduce fidelity as the performance index for the quantum state transformation process since the goal is to maximize the similarity of the final state density operator with the one of the desired target state. We formulate the quantum optimal control problem with state constraints where the later r…
We demonstrate $|W\rangle$ state encoding of multi-atom ensemble qubits. Using optically trapped Rb atoms the $T_2$ coherence time is 2.6(3) ms for $\bar N=7.6$ atoms and scales approximately inversely with the number of atoms. Strong Rydberg blockade between two ensemble qubits is demonstrated with a fidelity of $0.89(1)$ and a fidelity of $\sim \hspace{-.05cm}1.0$ when postselected on control ensemble excitation. These results are a significant step towards deterministic entanglement of atomic ensembles.
Superconducting qubits are a promising platform for building a larger-scale quantum processor capable of solving otherwise intractable problems. In order for the processor to reach practical viability, the gate errors need to be further suppressed and remain stable for extended periods of time. With recent advances in qubit control, both single- and two-qubit gate fidelities are now in many cases limited by the coherence times of the qubits. Here we experimentally employ closed-loop feedback to stabilize the frequency fluctuations of a superconducting transmon qubit, thereby increasing its coh…
We report results of a ground-state entanglement protocol for a pair of Cs atoms separated by 6~$μ$m, combining the Rydberg blockade mechanism with a two-photon Raman transitions to prepare the $\vertΨ^+\rangle=(\vert 10\rangle+\vert 01\rangle)/\sqrt{2}$ Bell state with a loss-corrected fidelity of 0.81(5), equal to the best demonstrated fidelity for atoms trapped in optical tweezers but without the requirement for dynamically adjustable interatomic spacing. Qubit state coherence is also critical for quantum information applications, and we characterise both ground-state and ground-Rydberg dep…
Trapped ions are one of the most promising platforms for quantum computing due to the longest qubit coherence times and the highest gate fidelities. However, scaling the number of ions (qubits) in a linear Coulomb crystal is the key difficulty on the way to multi-qubit systems. One of the promising pathways to scale the number of qubits is to implement the pulsed non-adiabatic gates based on the sequence of State Dependent Kicks (SDKs). We have analytically and numerically studied the influence of coherent effects in the SDK sequence and, correspondingly, have deduced the influence of the indi…
Hybrid quantum-classical algorithms have been proposed to circumvent noise limitations in quantum computers. Such algorithms delegate only a calculation of the expectation value to the quantum computer. Among them, the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) has been implemented to study molecules and condensed matter systems on small size quantum computers. Condensed matter systems described by the Hubbard model exhibit a rich phase diagram alongside exotic states of matter. In this manuscript, we try to answer the question: how much of the underlying physics of a 1D Hubbard chain is described …
Scaling the number of qubits while maintaining high-fidelity quantum gates remains a key challenge for quantum computing. Presently, superconducting quantum processors with >50-qubits are actively available. For such systems, fixed-frequency transmons are attractive due to their long coherence and noise immunity. However, scaling fixed-frequency architectures proves challenging due to precise relative frequency requirements. Here we employ laser annealing to selectively tune transmon qubits into desired frequency patterns. Statistics over hundreds of annealed qubits demonstrate an empirical tu…
Optical cat state plays an essential role in quantum computation and quantum metrology. Here, we experimentally quantify quantum coherence of an optical cat state by means of relative entropy and l_1 norm of coherence in Fock basis based on the prepared optical cat state at rubidium D1 line. By transmitting the optical cat state through a lossy channel, we also demonstrate the robustness of quantum coherence of optical cat state in the presence of loss, which is different from the decoherence properties of fidelity and Wigner function negativity of the optical cat state. Our results confirm th…
We propose the utilization of the IBM Quantum Experience quantum computing system to simulate different scenarios involving common hybrid quantum system components, the Nitrogen Vacancy Centre (NV centre) and the Flux Qubit. We perform a series of the simulation experiments and demonstrate properties of a virtual hybrid system, including its spin relaxation rate and state coherence. In correspondence with experimental investigations we look at the scalability of such systems and show that increasing the number of coupled NV centres decreases the coherence time. We also establish the main error…
We discuss the use of two-dimensional $^{9}$Be$^{+}$ ion crystals for experimental tests of quantum control techniques. Our primary qubit is the 124 GHz ground-state electron spin flip transition, which we drive using microwaves. An ion crystal represents a spatial ensemble of qubits, but the effects of inhomogeneities across a typical crystal are small, and as such we treat the ensemble as a single effective spin. We are able to initialize the qubits in a simple state and perform a projective measurement on the system. We demonstrate full control of the qubit Bloch vector, performing arbitrar…
Coherence and correlation are key features of the quantum system. Quantifying these quantities are astounding task in the framework of resource theory of quantum information processing. In this article, we identify an affinity-based metric to quantify closeness between two states. Using this metric, we introduce a valid quantum coherence measure. It is shown that the affinity based coherence measure is bounded by that based on fidelity and trace distance. Further, we propose a bipartite quantum correlation measure based on the affinity metric. The connection between the quantum correlation of …
The quantum coherence of a Bose-Einstein condensate is studied using the concept of quantum fidelity (Loschmidt echo). The condensate is confined in an elongated anharmonic trap and subjected to a small random potential such as that created by a laser speckle. Numerical experiments show that the quantum fidelity stays constant until a critical time, after which it drops abruptly over a single trap oscillation period. The critical time depends logarithmically on the number of condensed atoms and on the perturbation amplitude. This behavior may be observable by measuring the interference fringes…
