We investigate the transition from the many-body localized phase to the ergodic thermalized phase at an infinite temperature in an $XY$ spin chain with $L$ spins, which experiences power-law decaying interactions in the form of $V_{ij}\propto1/\left|i-j\right|^α$ ($i,j=1,\cdots,L$) and a random transverse field. By performing large-scale exact diagonalization for the chain size up to $L=18$, we systematically analyze the energy gap statistics, half-chain entanglement entropy, and uncertainty of the entanglement entropy of the system at different interaction exponents $α$. The finite-size critical scaling allows us to determine the critical disorder strength $W_{c}$ and critical exponent $ν$ at the many-body localization phase transition, as a function of the interaction exponent $α$ in the limit $L\rightarrow\infty$. We find that both $W_{c}$ and $ν$ diverge when $α$ decreases to a critical power $α_{c}\simeq1.16\pm0.17$, indicating the absence of many-body localization for $α<α_{c}$. Our result is useful to resolve the contradiction on the critical power found in two previous studies, $α_{c}=3/2$ from scaling argument in Phys. Rev. B \textbf{92}, 104428 (2015) and $α_{c}\approx1$ from quantum dynamics simulation in Phys. Rev. A \textbf{99}, 033610 (2019).
We show that a one-dimensional Hubbard model with all-to-all coupling may exhibit many-body localization in the presence of local disorder. We numerically identify the parameter space where many-body localization occurs using exact diagonalization and finite-size scaling. The time evolution from a random initial state exhibits features consistent with the localization picture. The dynamics can be observed with quantum gases in optical cavities, localization can be revealed through the time-dependent dynamics of the light emitted by the resonator.
Considering ultracold atoms in optical lattices, we propose experimental protocols to study many-body localization (MBL) length and criticality in quench dynamics. Through numerical simulations with exact diagonalization, we show that in the MBL phase the perturbed density profile following a local quench remains exponentially localized in post-quench dynamics. The size of this density profile after long-time-dynamics defines a localization length, which tends to diverge at the MBL-to-ergodic transition as we increase the system size. The determined localization transition point agrees with pr…
The possibility of observing many body localization of ultracold atoms in a one dimensional optical lattice is discussed for random interactions. In the non-interacting limit, such a system reduces to single-particle physics in the absence of disorder, i.e. to extended states. In effect the observed localization is inherently due to interactions and is thus a genuine many-body effect. In the system studied, many-body localization manifests itself in a lack of thermalization visible in temporal propagation of a specially prepared initial state, in transport properties, in the logarithmic growth…
We study theoretically transitions between the localized and chaotic many-body regimes in one-dimensional quantum lattice systems with long-range couplings between particles and linear external potential. In terms of established criteria characterizing localization, we construct effective phase diagrams for several types of lattice systems with variable amplitude of the external linear tilt and interaction strength. By means of exact diagonalization and time-dependent variational principle numerical approaches we analyze system dynamics after quenches. Our results reveal that the Stark localiz…
We investigate the formation of self-bound quantum droplets in a one-dimensional binary mixture of bosonic atoms, applying the method of numerical diagonalization of the full Hamiltonian. The excitation spectra and ground-state pair correlations signal the formation of a few-boson droplet when crossing the region of critical inter-species interactions. The self-binding affects the rotational excitations, displaying a change in the energy dispersion from negative curvature, associated with superfluidity in the many-body limit, to a nearly parabolic curvature indicative of rigid body rotation. W…
There is a counter-intuitive expectation proposed by Huse {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 88}, 014206 (2013)], and Chandran {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. B 89,144201 (2014)]: Localization protects quantum order of groundstate even in high excited eigenstates. In this work, we numerically investigate the localization protection for symmetry-protected-topological (SPT) order by considering a modified XXZ spin model, related to an interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. We systematically study how Many-body-localization (MBL) protects SPT for different disorder types and different forms of interac…
Out of time ordered correlator (OTOC) is recently introduced as a powerful diagnose for quantum chaos. To go beyond, here we present an analytical solution of OTOC for a non-chaotic many body localized (MBL) system, showing distinct feature from quantum chaos and Anderson localization (AL). The OTOC is found to fall only if the nearest distance between the two operators being shorter than $ξ\ln t$, where $ξ$ is dimensionless localization length. Thereafter, we found an universal power law decay of OTOC as $2^{-ξ\ln t}$, implying an universal logarithmic growth of second Rényi entropy, where $ξ…
We investigate a system of $N$ spinless bosons confined in quasi-two-dimensional harmonic trap with repulsive two-body finite-range Gaussian interaction potential of large $s$-wave scattering length. Exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix is carried out to obtain the $N$-body ground state as well as low-lying excited states, using Davidson algorithm in beyond lowest-Landau-level approximation. We examine the finite-range effects of the interaction potential on the many-body ground state energy as also the degree of condensation of the Bose-condensed gas. The results obtained indicate …
Lessons from Anderson localization highlight the importance of dimensionality of real space for localization due to disorder. More recently, studies of many-body localization have focussed on the phenomenon in one dimension using techniques of exact diagonalization and tensor networks. On the other hand, experiments in two dimensions have provided concrete results going beyond the previously numerically accessible limits while posing several challenging questions. We present the first large-scale numerical examination of a disordered Bose-Hubbard model in two dimensions realized in cold atoms,…
Study how quantum information propagates through spacetime manifold provides a means of identifying, distinguishing, and classifying novel phases of matter fertilized by many-body effects in strongly interacting systems in and out of equilibrium. Via a fuller characterization of key aspects regarding dynamic behaviors of information, we perform such an analysis on constrained many-body localization -- a newly proposed fully localized state under infinite-interaction limit -- in quasirandom Rydberg blockade spin chain models using thermal out-of-time-order commutators (OTOCs). The OTOC light co…
One fundamental assumption in statistical physics is that generic closed quantum many-body systems thermalize under their own dynamics. Recently, the emergence of many-body localized systems has questioned this concept, challenging our understanding of the connection between statistical physics and quantum mechanics. Here we report on the observation of a many-body localization transition between thermal and localized phases for bosons in a two-dimensional disordered optical lattice. With our single site resolved measurements we track the relaxation dynamics of an initially prepared out-of-equ…
We describe a procedure to systematically improve direct diagonalization results for few-particle systems trapped in one-dimensional harmonic potentials interacting by contact interactions. We start from the two-body problem to define a renormalization method for the interparticle interactions. The procedure is benchmarked with state-of-the-art numerical results for three and four symmetric fermions.
Motivated by a recent optical-lattice experiment by Choi et al.[Science 352, 1547 (2016)], we discuss how domain-wall melting can be used to investigate many-body localization. First, by considering noninteracting fermion models, we demonstrate that experimentally accessible measures are sensitive to localization and can thus be used to detect the delocalization-localization transition, including divergences of characteristic length scales. Second, using extensive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group simulations, we study fermions with repulsive interactions on a chain and a two…
We demonstrate that many-body localization of two-dimensional weakly interacting bosons in disorder remains stable in the thermodynamic limit at sufficiently low temperatures. Highly energetic particles destroy the localized state only above a critical temperature, which increases with the strength of the disorder. If the particle distribution is truncated at high energies, as it does for cold atom systems, the localization can be stable at any temperature.
Using exact diagonalization technique, we investigate the many-body localization phenomenon in the 1D Heisenberg chain comparing several disorder models. In particular we consider a family of discrete distributions of disorder strengths and compare the results with the standard uniform distribution. Both statistical properties of energy levels and the long time non-ergodic behavior are discussed. The results for different discrete distributions are essentially identical to those obtained for the continuous distribution, provided the disorder strength is rescaled by the standard deviation of th…
We study the many-body localization transition in one-dimensional Hubbard chains using exact diagonalization and quantum chaos indicators. We also study dynamics in the delocalized (ergodic) and localized phases and discuss thermalization and eigenstate thermalization, or the lack thereof, in such systems. Consistently within the indicators and observables studied, we find that ergodicity is very robust against disorder, namely, even in the presence of weak Hubbard interactions the disorder strength needed for the system to localize is large. We show that this robustness might be hidden by fin…
We generate translationally invariant systems exhibiting many-body localization from All-Bands- Flat single particle lattice Hamiltonians dressed with suitable short-range many-body interactions. This phenomenon - dubbed Many-Body Flatband Localization (MBFBL) - is based on symmetries of both single particle and interaction terms in the Hamiltonian, and it holds for any interaction strength. We propose a generator of MBFBL Hamiltonians which covers both interacting bosons and fermions for arbitrary lattice dimensions, and we provide explicit examples of MBFBL models in one and two lattice dime…
Many-body localization (MBL) in a one-dimensional Fermi Hubbard model with random on-site interactions is studied. While for this model all single-particle states are trivially delocalized, it is shown that for sufficiently strong disordered interactions the model is many-body localized. It is therefore argued that MBL does not necessary rely on localization of the single-particle spectrum. This model provides a convenient platform to study pure MBL phenomenology, since Anderson localization in this model does not exist. By examining various forms of the interaction term a dramatic effect of s…
We use exact diagonalization to study an interacting system of $N$ spinless bosons with finite-range Gaussian repulsion, confined in a quasi-two-dimensional harmonic trap with and without an introduced rotation. The diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix using Davidson algorithm in subspaces of quantized total angular momentum $L_{z}$ is carried out to obtain the $N$-body lowest eigenenergy and eigenstate. To bring out the effect of quantum (Bose) statistics and consequent phase stiffness (rigidity) of the variationally obtained many-body wavefunction on various physical quantities, our stu…
We propose to observe many-body localization in cold atomic gases by realizing a Bose-Hubbard chain with binary disorder and studying its non-equilibrium dynamics. In particular, we show that measuring the difference in occupation between even and odd sites, starting from a prepared density-wave state, provides clear signatures of localization. As hallmarks of the many-body localized phase we confirm, furthermore, a logarithmic increase of the entanglement entropy in time and Poissonian level statistics. Our numerical density-matrix renormalization group calculations for infinite system size a…
We introduce a simple, exactly solvable strong-randomness renormalization group (RG) model for the many-body localization (MBL) transition in one dimension. Our approach relies on a family of RG flows parametrized by the asymmetry between thermal and localized phases. We identify the physical MBL transition in the limit of maximal asymmetry, reflecting the instability of MBL against rare thermal inclusions. We find a critical point that is localized with power-law distributed thermal inclusions. The typical size of critical inclusions remains finite at the transition, while the average size is…
Motivated by the question of whether disorder is a prerequisite for localization to occur in quantum many-body systems, we study a frustrated one-dimensional spin chain, which supports localized many-body eigenstates in the absence of disorder. When the system is prepared in an initial state with one domain wall, it exhibits characteristic signatures of quasi-many-body localization (quasi- MBL), including initial state memory retention, an exponentially increasing lifetime with enlarging the size of the system, a logarithmic growth of entanglement entropy, and a logarithmic light cone of an ou…
We study the dynamics of an interacting quantum spin chain under the application of a linearly increasing field. This model exhibits a type of localization known as Stark many-body localization. The dynamics shows a strong dependence on the initial conditions, indicating that the system violates the conventional ("strong") eigenstate thermalization hypothesis at any finite gradient of the field. This is contrary to reports of a numerically observed ergodic phase. Therefore, the localization is crucially distinct from disorder-driven many-body localization, in agreement with recent predictions …
Exact diagonalization techniques are a powerful method for studying many-body problems. Here, we apply this method to systems of few bosons in an optical lattice, and use it to demonstrate the emergence of interesting quantum phenomena like fragmentation and coherence. Starting with a standard Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, we first revise the characterization of the superfluid to Mott insulator transitions. We then consider an inhomogeneous lattice, where one potential minimum is made much deeper than the others. The Mott insulator phase due to repulsive on-site interactions then competes with the…
Many-body localization (MBL) features are studied here for a large spin chain model with long range interactions. The model corresponds to cold atoms placed inside a cavity and driven by an external laser field with long range interactions coming from rescattering of cavity photons. Earlier studies were limited to small sizes amenable to exact diagonalization. It is shown that nonergodic features and MBL may exist in this model for random disorder as well as in the presence of tilted potential on experimental time scales also for experimentally relevant system sizes using tensor networks algor…
We show that the presence of a harmonic trap may in itself lead to many-body localization for cold atoms confined in that trap in a quasi-one-dimensional geometry. Specifically, the coexistence of delocalized phase in the center of the trap with localized region closer to the edges is predicted with the borderline dependent on the curvature of the trap. The phenomenon, similar in its origin to Stark localization, should be directly observed with cold atomic species. We discuss both the spinless and the spinful fermions, for the latter we address Stark localization at the same time as it has no…
The phenomenon of Many-Body Stark Localization of bosons in tilted optical lattice is studied. Despite the fact that no disorder is necessary for Stark localization to occur, it is very similar to well known many body localization (MBL) in sufficiently strong disorder. Not only the mean gap ratio reaches poissonian value as characteristic for localized situations but also the eigenstates reveal multifractal character as in standard MBL. Stark localization enables a coexistence of spacially separated thermal and localized phases in the harmonic trap similarly to fermions. Stark localization may…
The many-body localization (MBL) is commonly related to a strong spatial disorder. We show that MBL may alternatively be generated by adding a temporal disorder to periodically driven many-body systems. We reach this conclusion by mapping the evolution of such systems on the dynamics of the time-independent, disordered, Hubbard-like models. Our result opens the way to experimental studies of MBL in systems that reveal crystalline structures in the time domain. In particular, we discuss two relevant setups which can be implemented in experiments on ultra-cold atomic gases.
Many-body localization for a system of bosons trapped in a one dimensional lattice is discussed. Two models that may be realized for cold atoms in optical lattices are considered. The model with a random on-site potential is compared with previously introduced random interactions model. While the origin and character of the disorder in both systems is different they show interesting similar properties. In particular, many-body localization appears for a sufficiently large disorder as verified by a time evolution of initial density wave states as well as using statistical properties of energy l…
We experimentally observe many-body localization of interacting fermions in a one-dimensional quasi-random optical lattice. We identify the many-body localization transition through the relaxation dynamics of an initially-prepared charge density wave. For sufficiently weak disorder the time evolution appears ergodic and thermalizing, erasing all remnants of the initial order. In contrast, above a critical disorder strength a significant portion of the initial ordering persists, thereby serving as an effective order parameter for localization. The stationary density wave order and the critical …
We show, using quasi-exact numerical simulations, that Anderson localization of one-dimensional particles in a disordered potential survives in the presence of attractive interaction between particles. The localization length of the composite particle can be computed analytically for weak disorder and is in good agreement with the quasi-exact numerical observations using Time Evolving Block Decimation. Our approach allows for simulation of the entire experiment including the final measurement of all atom positions.
The many-body localization transition for Heisenberg spin chain with a speckle disorder is studied. Such a model is equivalent to a system of spinless fermions in an optical lattice with an additional speckle field. Our numerical results show that the many-body localization transition in speckle disorder falls within the same universality class as the transition in an uncorrelated random disorder, in contrast to the quasiperiodic potential typically studied in experiments. This hints at possibilities of experimental studies of the role of rare Griffiths regions and of the interplay of ergodic …
We theoretically investigate the behavior of a moving impurity immersed in a sea of fermionic atoms that are confined in a quasi-periodic (bichromatic) optical lattice, within a standard variational approach. We consider both repulsive and attractive contact interactions for such a simplest many-body localization problem of Fermi polarons. The variational approach enables us to access relatively large systems and therefore may be used to understand many-body localization in the thermodynamic limit. The energy and wave-function of the polaron states are found to be strongly affected by the quas…
We consider a mobile impurity particle injected into a one-dimensional quantum gas. The time evolution of the system strongly depends on whether the mass of the impurity and the masses of the host particles are equal or not. For equal masses, the model is Bethe Ansatz solvable, but for unequal masses, the model is no longer integrable and the Bethe Ansatz technique breaks down. We construct a controllable numerical method of computing the spectrum of the model with a finite number of host particles, based on exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian in the truncated basis of the Bethe Ansatz st…
We present exact methods for the numerical integration of the Wannier-Stark system in a many-body scenario including two Bloch bands. Our ab initio approaches allow for the treatment of a few-body problem with bosonic statistics and strong interparticle interaction. The numerical implementation is based on the Lanczos algorithm for the diagonalization of large, but sparse symmetric Floquet matrices. We analyze the scheme efficiency in terms of the computational time, which is shown to scale polynomially with the size of the system. The numerically computed eigensystem is applied to the analysi…
We study theoretically the collective dynamics of rotational excitations of polar molecules loaded into an optical lattice in two dimensions. These excitations behave as hard-core bosons with a relativistic energy dispersion arising from the dipolar coupling between molecules. This has interesting consequences for the collective many-body phases. The rotational excitations can form a Bose-Einstein condensate at non-zero temperature, manifesting itself as a divergent $T_2$ coherence time of the rotational transition even in the presence of inhomogeneous broadening. The dynamical evolution of a …
