Time-varying metasurfaces are emerging as a powerful instrument for the dynamical control of the electromagnetic properties of a propagating wave. Here we demonstrate an efficient time-varying metasurface based on plasmonic nano-antennas strongly coupled to an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) deeply sub-wavelength film. The plasmonic resonance of the metal resonators strongly interacts with the optical ENZ modes, providing a Rabi level spitting of ~30%. Optical pumping at frequency ω induces a nonlinear polarisation oscillating at 2ω responsible for an efficient generation of a phase conjugate and a negative refracted beam with a conversion efficiency that is more than four orders of magnitude greater compared to the bare ENZ film. The introduction of a strongly coupled plasmonic system therefore provides a simple and effective route towards the implementation of ENZ physics at the nanoscale
We identify a route towards achieving a negative index of refraction at optical frequencies based on coupling between plasmonic waveguides that support backwards waves. We show how modal symmetry can be exploited in metal-dielectric waveguide pairs to achieve negative refraction of both phase and energy. By properly controlling coupling between adjacent waveguides, a metamaterial consisting of a one-dimensional multilayer stack exhibiting an isotropic index of -1 can be achieved at a free-space wavelength of 400 nm. The general concepts developed here may inspire new low-loss metamaterial desi…
We propose a scheme to realize nonlinear coherent perfect absorption (CPA) at the nanoscale using epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) plasmonic waveguides. The general conditions to achieve CPA in a linear ENZ plasmonic waveguide are analyzed and presented. The proposed ENZ waveguides support an effective ENZ response at their cut-off frequency, where the CPA effect occurs under the illumination of two counter-propagating plane waves with equal amplitudes and appropriate phase distributions. In addition, the strong and uniform field enhancement inside the nanochannels of the waveguides at the ENZ resonanc…
We demonstrate a way to coherently control light at the nanoscale and achieve coherent perfect absorption (CPA) by using epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) plasmonic waveguides. The presented waveguides support an effective ENZ response at their cut-off frequency, combined with strong and homogeneous field enhancement along their nanochannels. The CPA conditions are perfectly satisfied at the ENZ frequency, surprisingly by a subwavelength plasmonic structure, resulting in strong CPA under the illumination of two counter-propagating plane waves with appropriate amplitudes and phases. In addition , we inve…
We extend designs of perfect lenses to the focussing of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating at the interface between two anisotropic media of opposite permittivity sign. We identify the role played by the components of anisotropic and heterogeneous tensors of permittivity and permeability, deduced from a coordinate transformation, in the dispersion relation governing propagation of SPPs. We illustrate our theory with three-dimensional finite element computations for focussing of SPPs by perfect flat and cylindrical lenses.
We present a nanoscale active plasmonic waveguide system consisting of an array of periodic slits that can exhibit exceptional points and spectral singularities leading to several novel functionalities. The proposed symmetric active system operates near its cut-off wavelength and behaves as an effective epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) medium. We demonstrate the formation of an exceptional point (EP) that is accessed with very low gain coefficient values, a unique feature of the proposed nanoscale symmetric plasmonic configuration. Reflectionless ENZ transmission and perfect loss-compensation are reali…
A plasmonic nanoantenna probed by a plane-polarized optical field in a medium with no gain materials can show zero absorption or even amplification, while exhibiting maximal polarizability. This occurs through coupling to an adjacent nanoantenna in a specially designed metamolecule, which is pumped by an orthogonal optical field with phase shift. The introduced scheme is a classical counterpart of an effect known in quantum optics as enhancement of the index of refraction (EIR). In contrary to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), where the medium is rendered highly dispersive at the…
Plasmonic crystals are a class of optical metamaterials that consist of engineered structures at the sub-wavelength scale. They exhibit optical properties that are not found under normal circumstances in nature, such as negative-refractive-index and epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) behavior. Graphene-based plasmonic crystals present linear, elliptical, or hyperbolic dispersion relations that exhibit ENZ behavior, normal or negative-index diffraction. The optical properties can be dynamically tuned by controlling the operating frequency and the doping level of graphene. We propose a construction approac…
The electromagnetic response of a two-dimensional metal embedded in a periodic array of a dielectric host can give rise to a plasmonic Dirac point that emulates Epsilon-Near-Zero (ENZ) behavior. This theoretical result is extremely sensitive to tructural features like periodicity of the dielectric medium and thickness imperfections. We propose that such a device can actually be realized by using graphene as the 2D metal and materials like the layered semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides or hexagonal boron nitride as the dielectric host. We propose a systematic approach, in terms of …
Multiqubit entanglement is extremely important to perform truly secure quantum optical communication and computing operations. However, the efficient generation of long-range entanglement over extended time periods between multiple qubits randomly distributed in a photonic system remains an outstanding challenge. This constraint is mainly due to the detrimental effects of decoherence and dephasing. To alleviate this issue, we present engineered epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) nanostructures that can maximize the coherence of light-matter interactions at room temperature. We investigate a practical ENZ…

We demonstrate analytically and numerically that the dispersive Dirac cone emulating an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) behavior is a universal property within a family of plasmonic crystals consisting of two-dimensional (2D) metals. Our starting point is a periodic array of 2D metallic sheets embedded in an inhomogeneous and anisotropic dielectric host that allows for propagation of transverse-magnetic (TM) polarized waves. By invoking a systematic bifurcation argument for arbitrary dielectric profiles in one spatial dimension, we show how TM Bloch waves experience an effective dielectric function th…
The entanglement and resonance energy transfer between two-level quantum emitters are typically limited to sub-wavelength distances due to the inherently short-range nature of the dipole-dipole interactions. Moreover, the entanglement of quantum systems is hard to preserve for a long time period due to decoherence and dephasing mainly caused by radiative and nonradiative losses. In this work, we outperform the aforementioned limitations by presenting efficient long-range inter-emitter entanglement and large enhancement of resonance energy transfer between two optical qubits mediated by epsilon…
We describe the possibility of drastically boosting the spontaneous emission of a collection of two-level quantum emitters by embedding them in an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) environment, consisting of a plasmonic waveguide operated at cut-off. This phenomenon relies on the combination of Purcell enhancement and Dicke superradiance effects, exploiting the large and uniform local density of states in ENZ channels, which is shown to significantly extend the spatial extent of these quantum effects. We envision exciting applications in optical sensing, molecular detection and low-threshold lasing.
The field effect in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors plays a key role in field-effect transistors (FETs), which are the fundamental building blocks of modern digital integrated circuits. Recent works show that the field effect can also be used to make optical/plasmonic modulators. In this paper, we report field effect electro-absorption modulators (FEOMs) each made of an ultrathin epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) film, as the active material, sandwiched in a silicon or plasmonic waveguide. Without a bias, the ENZ film maximizes the attenuation of the waveguides and the modulators work at the …
We propose a design for a plasmonic copper metamaterial with a negative index of refraction at visible/near-infrared wavelengths. Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate negative refraction by a copper metamaterial prism, and perform a parameter extraction technique to verify the sign of the effective, electric permittivity and magnetic permeability. Our proposed design has a figure of merit comparable to similar silver-based metamaterials operating in the visible/near-infrared range. These findings have implications for the design of low cost plasmonic devices and negative-index metamater…
The group velocity of a plasmonic guided mode can be written as the ratio of the flux of the Poynting to the integral of the energy density along the profile of the mode. This theorem, linking the way energy propagates in metals to the properties of guided modes and Bloch modes in a multilayer, provides a unique physical insight in plasmonics. It allows to better understand the link between the negative permittivity of metals and the wide diversity of exotic phenomenon that occur in plasmonics -- like the slowing down of guided modes, the high wavevector and the negative refraction.
In recent years, the large electric field enhancement and tight spatial confinement supported by the so-called epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) mode have attracted significant attention for the realization of efficient nonlinear optical devices. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a new type of antenna, termed an ENZ photonic gap antenna (PGA), which consists of a dielectric pillar within which a thin slab of indium tin oxide (ITO) material is embedded. In ENZ PGAs, hybrid dielectric-ENZ modes emerge from strong coupling between the dielectric antenna modes and the ENZ bulk plasmon resonance. These hyb…
Negative refraction provides an attractive platform to manipulate mid-infrared and terahertz radiation for molecular sensing and thermal radiation applications. However, its implementation based on available metamaterials and plasmonic media presents challenges associated with optical losses, limited spatial confinement, and lack of active tunability in this spectral range. Here, we demonstrate gate-tunable negative refraction at mid-infrared frequencies using hybrid topological polaritons in van der Waals heterostructures with high spatial confinement. We experimentally visualize wide-angle n…
Plasmonic Electro-Optic Modulators based on Epsilon-Near-Zero Materials: Comparing the Classical Drift-Diffusion and Schrödinger-Poisson Coupling Models
We configure and analyze a nanostructured device that hybridizes grating modes and surface plasmon resonances. The model uses an effective index of refraction that considers the volume fraction of the involved materials, and the propagation depth of the plasmon through the structure. Our geometry is an extruded low-order diffraction grating made of dielectric nano-triangles. Surface plasmon resonances are excited at a metal/dielectric interface, which is separated from the analyte by a high-index dielectric layer. The optical performance of the refractometric sensor is highly competitive in se…
The development of optical metamaterials has resulted in the demonstration of remarkable physical properties, including cloaking, optical magnetism, and negative refraction. The latter has attracted particular interest, mainly because of its promise for super-resolution imaging. In recent years, negative refraction has been demonstrated with plasmonic materials and nonlinear discrete elements. However, the widespread use of negative refraction at optical frequencies is limited by high losses and strong dispersion effects, which typically limits operation to narrow frequency bands. Here we use …
We develop an approach to use nanostructured plasmonic materials as a non-magnetic negative-refractive index system at optical and near-infrared frequencies. In contrast to conventional negative refraction materials, our design does not require periodicity and thus is highly tolerant to fabrication defects. Moreover, since the proposed materials are intrinsically non-magnetic, their performance is not limited to proximity of a resonance so that the resulting structure has relatively low loss. We develop the analytical description of the relevant electromagnetic phenomena and justify our analyt…
Backward waves and negative refraction are shown to exist in plasmonic crystals whose lattice cell size is a very small fraction of the vacuum wavelength (less than 1/40th in an illustrative example). Such ``quasi-homogeneity'' is important, in particular, for high-resolution imaging. Real and complex Bloch bands are computed using the recently developed finite-difference calculus of ``Flexible Local Approximation MEthods'' (FLAME) that produces linear eigenproblems, as opposed to quadratic or nonlinear ones typical for other techniques. FLAME dramatically improves the accuracy by incorporatin…

Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials have emerged as viable platforms for strong nonlinear optical (NLO) interactions. The NLO phase shift in materials exhibiting an ENZ condition is extremely large, however, direct experimental measurements of the magnitude and time dynamics of this phenomenon, particularly nondegenerate NLO phase shifts, have so far been lacking. Here, we directly measure the NLO phase shift of an Indium-Tin-Oxide (ITO) thin film using three different techniques. By characterizing the excitation-induced, time resolved Beam Deflection (BD) of a probe beam, we measure the nondege…
Fully reconfigurable metasurfaces would enable new classes of optical devices that provide unprecedented control of electromagnetic beamforms. The principal challenge for achieving reconfigurability is the need to generate large tunability of subwavelength, low-Q metasurface resonators. Here, we demonstrate large refractive index tuning can be efficiently facilitated at mid-infrared wavelengths using novel temperature-dependent control over free-carrier refraction. In doped InSb we demonstrate nearly two-fold increase in the electron effective mass leading to a positive refractive index shift …
The collective response of matter is ubiquitous and widely exploited, e.g. in plasmonic, optical and electronic devices. Here we trace on an attosecond time scale the birth of collective excitations in a finite system and find distinct new features in this regime. Combining quantum chemical computation with quantum kinetic methods we calculate the time-dependent light absorption and refraction in fullerene that serve as indicators for the emergence of collective modes. We explain the numerically calculated novel transient features by an analytical model and point out the relevance for ultra-fa…
Materials with a spatially uniform but temporally varying optical response have applications ranging from magnetic field-free optical isolators to fundamental studies of quantum field theories. However, these effects typically become relevant only for time-variations oscillating at optical frequencies, thus presenting a significant hurdle that severely limits the realisation of such conditions. Here we present a thin-film material with a permittivity that pulsates (uniformly in space) at optical frequencies and realises a time-reversing medium of the form originally proposed by Pendry [Science…
Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials have shown significant potential for nonlinear optical applications due to their ultrafast hot carriers and consequent optical nonlinearity enhancement. Modified poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films show metallic characteristics and a resultant ENZ wavelength near 1550nm through polar solvent treatment and annealing. The metallic PEDOT film exhibits an intrinsic optical nonlinear response that is comparable to gold and 100-fold higher than typical inorganic semiconductor ENZ materials due to π-conjugated delocalized electrons. Hot carriers generate a…
The unique properties of the emerging photonic materials - conducting nitrides and oxides - especially their tailorability, large damage thresholds, and the so-called epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) behavior, have enabled novel photonic phenomena spanning optical circuitry, tunable metasurfaces, and nonlinear optical devices. This work explores direct control of the optical properties of polycrystalline titanium nitride (TiN) and aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) by tailoring the film thickness, and their potential for ENZ-enhanced photonic applications. We demonstrate that TiN-AZO bilayers act as Ferre…
Negative refractive index materials (NRIM) make possible unique effects such as a convergent at lens due to the reversed Snell-Descartes laws of refraction. NRIM are also known to be able to support a host of surface plasmon states for both polarizations of light which are responsible for the sub-wavelength image resolution achieved by a slab of NRIM. A generalized lens theorem provides us with a class of spatially varying slab lenses satisfying the prerequisite symmetries to fold the optical space onto itself. This theorem can be derived using powerful tools of transformational optics. A para…
Controlling the phase and amplitude of light emitted by the elements (i.e., pixels) of an optical phased array is of paramount importance to realizing dynamic beam steering for LIDAR applications. In this paper, we propose a plasmonic pixel composed of a metallic nanoantenna covered by a thin oxide layer, and a conductive oxide, e.g., ITO, for use in a reflectarray metasurface. By considering voltage biasing of the nanoantenna via metallic connectors, and exploiting the carrier refraction effect in the metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor in the accumulation and depletion regions, our simulatio…
We demonstrate that in photonic gap antennas composed of an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) layer embedded within a high-index dielectric, hybrid modes emerge from the strong coupling between the ENZ thin film and the photonic modes of the dielectric antenna. These hybrid modes show giant electric field enhancements, large enhancements of the far-field spontaneous emission rate and a unidirectional radiation response. We analyze both parent and hybrid modes using quasinormal mode theory and find that the hybridization can be well understood using a coupled oscillator model. Under plane wave illuminati…
The index of refraction governs the flow of light through materials. At visible and near infrared wavelengths the real part of the refractive index is limited to less than 3 for naturally occurring transparent materials, fundamentally restricting applications. Here, we carried out experiments to study the upper limit of the effective refractive index of self-assembled metasurfaces at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. The centimeter-scale metasurfaces were made of a hexagonally close packed (hcp) monolayer of gold nanospheres coated with tunable alkanethiol ligand shells, controlling the i…
