[100]-tilt grain-boundary YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) junctions are promising for investigation of macroscopic quantum phenomena in high-Tc Josephson junctions. However, fabrication of the [100]-tilt grain-boundary YBCO junctions with a high resistance, which are required to study quantum effects, is difficult because of a high transparency of a tunnel barrier in this type of junctions. Here, we demonstrate a modification of grain-boundary barrier properties with a new approach to an oxygen electromigration in the YBCO grain-boundary junctions when the oxygen diffuses under an applied electric field from the grain-boundary to a BaTbO3 layer deposited atop of an YBCO film. Using this approach, we changed the normal-state resistance of the junctions from tens to several hundred Ohms without a degradation of their characteristic voltage IcRn and determined a barrier height and thickness by measuring the quasiparticle tunnelling current.
We highlight the reproducibility and level of control over the electrical properties of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ Josephson junctions fabricated with irradiation from a focused helium ion beam. Specifically, we show the results of electrical transport properties for several junctions fabricated using a large range of irradiation doses. At the lower end of this range, junctions exhibit superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction properties. However, as dose increases there is a transition to electrical characteristics consistent with superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS…
Stacks of a few intrinsic tunnel junctions were micro-fabricated on the surface of Bi-2212 single crystals. The number of junctions in a stack was tailored by progressively increasing the height of the stack by ion-beam etching, while its tunneling characteristics were measured in-situ in a vacuum chamber for temperatures down to ~13 K. Using this in-situ etching/measurements technique in a single piece of crystal, we systematically excluded any spurious effects arising from variations in the junction parameters and made clear analysis on the following properties of the surface and inner condu…
We have studied the electric transport properties of symmetrical [001] tilt NdCeCuO bicrystal grain boundary Josephson junctions (GBJs) fabricated on SrTiO bicrystal substrates with misorientation angles of 24 and 36.8 degree. The superconducting properties of the NdCeCuO-GBJs are similar to those of GBJs fabricated from the hole doped high temperature superconductors (HTS). The critical current density Jc decreases strongly with increasing misorientation angle. The products of the critical current Ic and the normal resistance Rn (about 0.1 mV at 4.2 K) are small compared to the gap voltage an…
We have fabricated and measured Josephson junction defect spectrometers (JJDSs), which are frequency-tunable, nearly-harmonic oscillators that probe strongly-coupled two-level systems (TLSs) in the barrier of a Josephson junction (JJ). The JJDSs accommodate a wide range of junction inductances, $L_{J}$, while maintaining a resonance frequency, $f_{0}$, in the range of 4-8 GHz. By applying a magnetic flux bias to tune $f_{0}$, we detect strongly-coupled TLSs in the junction barrier as splittings in the device spectrum. JJDSs fabricated with a via-style Al/thermal AlOx/Al junction and measured a…
We explore novel junction configurations as an extension of our established Focused Ion Beam-based low TC SNS Junction fabrication technique. By milling a circular trench (diameter 1 micron, width 50 nm) in a 125 nm Nb 75 nm Cu bilayer we define a superconducting island connected to the bulk of the film by a normal metal barrier and entirely enclosed in-plane by the superconducting film. The circular junction properties can be probed by depositing an insulating layer over the device and drilling a 0.3 micron diameter hole down to the island to allow a Nb via to be deposited. Device behavior ha…
We present experimental results on a Josephson parametric amplifier tailored for readout of ultra-sensitive thermal microwave detectors. In particular, we discuss the impact of fabrication details on the performance. We show that the small volume of deposited dielectric materials enabled by the side-wall passivated spacer niobium junction technology leads to robust operation across a wide range of operating temperatures up to 1.5 K. The flux-pumped amplifier has gain in excess of 20 dB in three-wave mixing and its center frequency is tunable between 540 MHz and 640 MHz. At 600 MHz, the amplifi…
We have developed a combined photolithography and electron-beam lithography fabrication process for sub-\mum to \mum-size Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb Josephson junctions. In order to define the junction size and protect its top electrode during anodic oxidation, we developed and used the new concept of an aluminum hard mask. Josephson junctions of sizes down to 0.5 \mum2 have been fabricated and thoroughly characterized. We found that they have a very high quality, which is witnessed by the IV curves with quality parameters Vm > 50 mV and Vgap = 2.8 mV at 4.2 K, as well as IcRN products of 1.75-1.93 mV obta…
Currently, superconductor digital integrated circuits fabricated at HYPRES, Inc. can operate at clock frequencies of ~ 40 GHz. The circuits present multilayered structures containing tens of thousands of Nb/Al/AlOx/Nb Josephson junctions (JJs) of various sizes interconnected by four Nb wiring layers, resistors, and other circuit elements. In order to be operational, the integrated circuits should be fabricated such that the critical currents of Josephson junctions remain within the tight design margins and the proper relationships between the critical currents of JJs of different sizes are pre…
In this contribution we present a simple and effective procedure to determine the average critical current of a tridimensional disordered Josephson junction array (3D-DJJA). Using a contactless configuration we evaluate the average critical current and the typical width of the distribution through the analysis of the isothermal susceptibility response to the excitation field amplitude, chiAC(h). A 3D-DJJA fabricated from granular Nb is used to illustrate the method.
Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor (S-F-S) Josephson junctions were fabricated by making a narrow cut through a S-F double layer using direct writing by Focused Ion Beam (FIB). Due to a high resolution (spot size smaller than 10 nm) of FIB, junctions with a small separation between superconducting electrodes ($\leq$ 30 nm) can be made. Such a short distance is sufficient for achieving a considerable proximity coupling through a diluted CuNi ferromagnet. We have successfully fabricated and studied S-F-S (Nb-CuNi-Nb) and S-S'-S (Nb-Nb/CuNi-Nb) junctions. Junctions exhibit clear Fraunhofer…
To investigate in-phase structures (rectangular lattice) of Josephson vortex lattice (JVL) in intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d, we fabricated IJJs with various lateral sizes down to a size of non-linear core of Josephson vortex using focused-ion-beam etching and measured flux flow resistance (RFF) with in-plane magnetic fields (H). We have found that above a size-independent critical field, the critical current shows Fraunhofer pattern in narrow-length IJJs (0.29-2.77 mm), and then the RFF~H oscillates with H0 period. Most strikingly, such oscillations become pulse-like …
We have measured the depinning of trapped kinks in a ratchet potential using a fabricated circular array of Josephson junctions. Our ratchet system consists of a parallel array of junctions with alternating cell inductances and junctions areas. We have compared this ratchet array with other circular arrays. We find experimentally and numerically that the depinning current depends on the direction of the applied current in our ratchet ring. We also find other properties of the depinning current versus applied field, such as a long period and a lack of reflection symmetry, which we can explain a…
Josephson junctions were fabricated in epitaxial films of cobalt-doped BaFe2As2 on [001]-tilt (La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3 bicrystal substrates. 10m-wide microbridges spanning a 30-degrees-tilted bicrystal grain boundary (BGB bridge) exhibited resistively-shunted-junction (RSJ)-like current-voltage characteristics up to 17 K, and the critical current was suppressed remarkably by a magnetic field. Microbridges without a BGB did not show the RSJ-like behavior, and their critical current densities were 20 times larger than those of BGB bridges, confirming BGB bridges display a Josephson effect originating fr…
We have fabricated and measured a high-Q Josephson junction resonator with a tunable resonance frequency. A dc magnetic flux allows the resonance frequency to be changed by over 10 %. Weak coupling to the environment allows a quality factor of $\thicksim$7000 when on average less than one photon is stored in the resonator. At large photon numbers, the nonlinearity of the Josephson junction creates two stable oscillation states. This resonator can be used as a tool for investigating the quality of Josephson junctions in qubits below the single photon limit, and can be used as a microwave qubit …
We demonstrate experimentally the existence of Josephson junctions having a doubly degenerate ground state with an average Josephson phase ψ=\pmϕ. The value of ϕ can be chosen by design in the interval 0<ϕ<π. The junctions used in our experiments are fabricated as 0-π Josephson junctions of moderate normalized length with asymmetric 0 and π regions. We show that (a) these ϕ Josephson junctions have two critical currents, corresponding to the escape of the phase ψ from -ϕ and +ϕ states; (b) the phase ψ can be set to a particular state by tuning an external magnetic field or (c) by using a prope…
Superconductor-topological insulator-superconductor Josephson junctions have been fabricated in order to study the width dependence of the critical current, normal state resistance and flux periodicity of the critical current modulation in an external field. Previous literature reports suggest anomalous scaling in topological junctions due to the presence of Majorana bound states. However, for most realised devices, one would expect that trivial $2π$-periodic Andreev levels dominate transport. We also observe anomalous scaling behaviour of junction parameters, but the scaling can be well expla…
In this work, we briefly overview various options for Josephson junctions which should be scalable down to nanometer range for utilization in nanoscale digital superconducting technology. Such junctions should possess high values of critical current, $I_c$, and normal state resistance, $R_n$. Another requirement is the high reproducibility of the junction parameters across a wafer in a fabrication process. We argue that Superconductor - Normal metal - Superconductor (SN-N-NS) Josephson junction of "variable thickness bridge" geometry is a promising choice to meet these requirements. Theoretica…
We demonstrate that shunting of Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor Josephson junctions by Superconductor-Insulator-Normal metal (S-I-N) structures having pronounced non-linear I-V characteristics can remarkably modify the Josephson dynamics. In the regime of Josephson generation the phase behaves as an overdamped coordinate, while in the superconducting state the damping and current noise are strikingly small, that is vitally important for application of such junctions for readout and control of Josephson qubits. Superconducting Nb/AlO${_x}$/Nb junction shunted by Nb/AlO${_x}$/AuPd juncti…
We present data on the modulation of the critical current with applied magnetic field in UPt_3-Cu-Pb Josephson junctions and SQUIDs. The junctions were fabricated on polished surfaces of UPt_3 single crystals. The shape of the resulting diffraction patterns provides phase sensitive information on the superconducting order parameter. Our corner junction data show asymmetric patterns with respect to magnetic field, indicating a complex order parameter, and both our junction and SQUID measurements point to a phase shift of Pi, supporting the E_2u representation of the order parameter.
We propose, implement and test experimentally long Josephson 0-pi junctions fabricated using conventional Nb-AlOx-Nb technology. We show that using a pair of current injectors, one can create an arbitrary discontinuity of the Josephson phase and in particular a pi-discontinuity, just like in d-wave/s-wave or in d-wave/d-wave junctions, and study fractional Josephson vortices which spontaneously appear. Moreover, using such junctions, we can investigate the \emph{dynamics} of the fractional vortices -- a domain which is not yet available for natural 0-pi-junctions due to their inherently high d…
Superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor (SIFS) Josephson tunnel junctions based on Nb\Al2O3\Ni\Cu\Nb stacks with a thickness step in the metallic NiCu interlayer were fabricated. The step height of a few 0.1 nm was defined by optical lithography and controlled etching of both Nb and NiCu layers. Experimentally determined junction parameters by current-voltage characteristics and Fraunhofer pattern indicate a uniform NiCu thickness and similar interface transparencies for etched and non-etched parts. The critical current diffraction pattern was calculated and measured for stepped ju…

We fabricated high quality Nb/Al_2O_3/Ni_{0.6}Cu_{0.4}/Nb superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson tunnel junctions. Using a ferromagnetic layer with a step-like thickness, we obtain a 0-pi junction, with equal lengths and critical currents of 0 and pi parts. The ground state of our 330 microns (1.3 lambda_J) long junction corresponds to a spontaneous vortex of supercurrent pinned at the 0-pi step and carrying ~6.7% of the magnetic flux quantum Phi_0. The dependence of the critical current on the applied magnetic field shows a clear minimum in the vicinity of zero field.
Highly reproducible Nb/Al(AlOx)/Nb Josephson junction based direct current superconducting quantum interference devices (DC SQUID) were fabricated by three dimensional etching using focused ion beam. Hysteretic and non-hysteretic DC SQUID with critical current ranging from 25 to 1100 microampere were fabricated by varying the Al barrier and oxygen exposure time. The fabricated DC SQUIDs have shown periodic flux dependence with high modulation factor reaching a value of 92% at 4.2 K.
Nb/Al_2O_3/Ni_{0.6}Cu_{0.4}/Nb based superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor (SIFS) Josephson tunnel junctions with a thickness step in the metallic ferromagnetic \Ni_{0.6}\Cu_{0.4} interlayer were fabricated. The step was defined by optical lithography and controlled etching. The step height is on the scale of a few angstroms. Experimentally determined junction parameters by current-voltage characteristics and Fraunhofer pattern indicate an uniform F-layer thickness and the same interface transparencies for etched and non-etched F-layers. This technique could be used to tailor low…
Intrinsic Josephson-junction stacks realized in mesas fabricated out of high-temperature superconductors may be used as sources of coherent electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz range. The major challenge is to synchronize Josephson oscillations in all junctions in the stack to get significant radiation out of the crystal edge parallel to the c axis. We suggest a simple way to solve this problem via artificially prepared lateral modulation of the Josephson critical current identical in all junctions. In such a stack phase oscillations excite the in-phase Fiske mode when the Josephson freq…
We demonstrate that Josephson devices with nontrivial phase difference $% 0<φ_g <π$ in the ground state can be realized in structures composed from longitudinally oriented normal metal (N) and ferromagnet (F) films in the weak link region. Oscillatory coupling across F-layer makes the first harmonic in the current-phase relation relatively small, while coupling across N-layer provides negative sign of the second harmonic. To derive quantitative criteria for a $φ$-junction, we have solved two-dimensional boundary-value problem in the frame of Usadel equations for overlap and ramp geometries of …
We fabricated and tested a squelch circuit consisting of a copper powder filter with an embedded Josephson junction connected to ground. For small signals (squelch-ON), the small junction inductance attenuates strongly from DC to at least 1 GHz, while for higher frequencies dissipation in the copper powder increases the attenuation exponentially with frequency. For large signals (squelch-OFF) the circuit behaves as a regular metal powder filter. The measured ON/OFF ratio is larger than 50dB up to 50 MHz. This squelch can be applied in low temperature measurement and control circuitry for quant…
We have developed a novel Josephson junction geometry with minimal volume of lossy isolation dielectric, being suitable for higher quality trilayer junctions implemented in qubits. The junctions are based on in-situ deposited trilayers with thermal tunnel oxide, have micron-sized areas and a low subgap current. In qubit spectroscopy only a few avoided level crossings are observed, and the measured relaxation time of $T_1\approx400\;\rm{nsec}$ is in good agreement with the usual phase qubit decay time, indicating low loss due to the additional isolation dielectric.
We designed, fabricated and tested short one dimensional arrays of masked ion-irradiated YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ Josephson junctions (JJ) embedded into log-periodic spiral antennas. Our arrays consist of 4 or 8 junctions separated either by 960~nm or 80~nm long areas of undamaged YBCO. Samples with distanced junctions and with closely spaced junctions showed qualitatively different behaviors. Well separated arrays demonstrated giant Shapiro steps in the hundreds-GHz band at 66K and were tested as Josephson mixers with improved impedance matching. All closely spaced arrays behaved as one junction wi…
We investigate numerically a long Josephson junction with several phase pi-discontinuity points. Such junctions are usually fabricated as a ramp between an anisotropic cuprate superconductor like YBCO and an isotropic metal superconductor like Nb. From the top, they look like zigzags with pi-jumps of the Josephson phase at the corners. These pi-jumps, at certain conditions, lead to the formation of half-integer flux quanta, which we call semifluxons (SF), pinned at the corners. We show (a) that the spontaneous formation of SFs depends on the junction length, (b) that the ground state without S…
We report the systematic investigations of the oscillation of the Josephson vortex (JV) flow resistance in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ micro-fabricated junctions with various geometries and superconducting anisotropy parameters. As the applied magnetic field parallel to the $ab$-plane is increased, oscillation with a period corresponding to a $ϕ_0/2$ par atomic Josephson junction changes to oscillation with a doubled period. This crossover is scaled by both the junction length and the anisotropy parameter, indicating that the bulk inductive coupling that favors the triangular JV lattice is r…
We report the fabrication of a directly coupled superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer in MgB2 using a focused ion beam (FIB) to create Josephson junctions in a 70 nm thick film of MgB2. The SQUID shows a voltage modulation (deltaV) of 175 mV at a temperature of 10 K and operates over a temperature range from 10 K to 24 K. We find excellent agreement between the measured maximum transfer functions and those predicted by theory. We have measured the magnetic flux noise at 20 K to be as low as 14 micro Phi-0 per root Hz.
We describe fabrication and testing of composite flux qubits combining Nb- and Al-based superconducting circuit technology. This hybrid approach to making qubits allows for employing pi-phase shifters fabricated using well-established Nb-based technology of superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junctions. The important feature here is to obtain high interface transparency between Nb and Al layers without degrading sub-micron shadow mask. We achieve this by in-situ Ar etching using e-beam gun. Shadow-evaporated Al/AlOx/Al Josephson junctions with Nb bias pads show the expected cur…
We investigated decoherence of a Josephson vortex quantum bit (qubit) in dissipative and noisy environment. As the Josephson vortex qubit (JVQ) is fabricated by using a long Josephson junction (LJJ), we use the perturbed sine-Gordon equation to describe the phase dynamics representing a two-state system and estimate the effects of quasiparticle dissipation and weakly fluctuating critical and bias currents on the relaxation time T_1 and on the dephasing time T_ϕ. We show that the critical current fluctuation does not contribute to dephasing of the qubit in the lowest order approximation. Modeli…
We present the measurement of superconductor / ferromagnetic Josephson junctions, based on an epitaxial Nb bottom electrode and epitaxial Fe20Ni80 barrier. Uniform junctions have been fabricated with a barrier thicknesses in the range 2-12 nm. The maximum critical current density ~ 2.4 \pm 0.2 * 10^9 Am^-2 was found for a devices with a 3 nm thick barrier at 4.2 K, corresponding to an average characteristic voltage I_C R_N ~ 16 \muV. The I_C R_N showed a non-monotonic behavior with Fe20Ni80 thickness. The variation of the resistance of a unit area AR_N, of the junctions with barrier thickness …
We present experimental studies of high quality underdamped 0, pi, and 0-pi ferromagnetic Josephson tunnel junctions of intermediate length L (lambda_J < L < 5 lambda_J, where lambda_J is the Josephson penetration depth). The junctions are fabricated as Nb/Al_2O_3/Cu_40Ni_60/Nb Superconductor-Insulator-Ferromagnet-Superconductor heterostructures. Using microwave spectroscopy, we have investigated the eigenfrequencies of 0, pi, and 0-pi Josephson junctions in the temperature range 1.9K...320mK. Harmonic, subharmonic and superharmonic pumping is observed in experiment, and the experimental data …
We define superconducting constrictions by ploughing a deposited Aluminum film with a scanning probe microscope. The microscope tip is modified by electron beam deposition to form a nano-plough of diamond-like hardness, what allows the definition of highly transparent Josephson junctions. Additionally a dc-SQUID is fabricated to verify appropriate functioning of the junctions. The devices are easily integrated in mesoscopic devices as local radiation sources and can be used as tunable on-chip millimeter wave sources.
Transport is called nonreciprocal when not only the sign, but also the absolute value of the current, depends on the polarity of the applied voltage. It requires simultaneously broken inversion and time-reversal symmetries, e.g., by the interplay of spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field. So far, observation of nonreciprocity was always tied to resistivity, and dissipationless nonreciprocal circuit elements were elusive. Here, we engineer fully superconducting nonreciprocal devices based on highly-transparent Josephson junctions fabricated on InAs quantum wells. We demonstrate supercurrent rec…
The transport properties of a topological Josephson junction fabricated from a magnetically doped topological insulator (TI) were investigated. The conductance spectra of the Nb/Fe-Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se/Nb junction below 1 K showed an unusual trident-shaped zero-bias conductance peak with a tiny peak width of $\sim$ 6 $μ$V. The central peak of the trident peak presents the dc-Josephson current, and the side peaks may reflect an induced unconventional Cooper pairing. Additionally, the critical currents followed inverse to temperature, which may also reflect the presence of an unconventional proximity …
We present a fabrication scheme and testing results for epitaxial sub-micrometer Josephson junctions. The junctions are made using a high-temperature (1170 K) "via process" yielding junctions as small as 0.8 mu m in diameter by use of optical lithography. Sapphire (Al2O3) tunnel-barriers are grown on an epitaxial Re/Ti multilayer base-electrode. We have fabricated devices with both Re and Al top electrodes. While room-temperature (295 K) resistance versus area data are favorable for both types of top electrodes, the low-temperature (50 mK) data show that junctions with the Al top electrode hav…
A planar Josephson junction with a normal metal attached on its top surface will form a hollow nanowire structure due to its three dimensional nature. In such hollow nanowire structure, the magnetic flux induced by a small magnetic field (about 0.01T) will tune the system into topologically non-trivial phase and therefore two Majorana zero-modes will form at the ends of the nanowire. Through tuning the chemical potential of the normal metal, the topologically non-trivial phase can be obtained for almost all energy within the band. Furthermore, the system can be conveniently tuned between the t…
A key phenomenon related to the Josephson effect is oscillations of different properties of superconducting tunneling junctions with magnetic field. We consider magnetic oscillations of the critical current in stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions, which are realized in mesas fabricated from layered high-temperature superconductors. The oscillation behavior is very different from the case of a single junction. Depending on the stack lateral size, oscillations may have either the period of half flux quantum per junction (wide-stack regime) or one flux quantum per junction (narrow-stack regime…
Exotic superconductors, such as high T$_C$, topological, and heavy-fermion superconductors, require phase sensitive measurements to determine the underlying pairing. Here we investigate the proximity-induced superconductivity in nanowires of SnTe, where an $s\pm is^{\prime}$ superconducting state is produced that lacks the time-reversal and valley-exchange symmetry of the parent SnTe. This effect, in conjunction with a ferroelectric distortion of the lattice at low temperatures, results in a marked alteration of the properties of Josephson junctions fabricated using SnTe nanowires. This work e…
We elaborate a theoretical description of large Josephson junctions which is based on the Werthamer's microscopic tunneling theory. The model naturally incorporates coupling of electromagnetic radiation to the tunnel currents and, therefore, is particularly suitable for description of the self-coupling effect in Josephson junction. In our numerical calculations we treat the arising integro-differential equation, which describes temporal evolution of the superconducting phase difference coupled to the electromagnetic field, by the Odintsov-Semenov-Zorin algorithm. This allows us to avoid evalua…
Josephson junctions were fabricated using two different methods of barrier formation. The trilayers employed were Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb on sapphire, where the first two layers were epitaxial. The oxide barrier was formed either by exposing the Al surface to O2 or by codepositing Al in an O2 background. The codeposition process yielded junctions that showed the theoretically predicted subgap current and no measurable shunt conductance. In contrast, devices with barriers formed by thermal oxidation showed a small shunt conductance in addition to the predicted subgap current.
Sandwich-type all-MgB2 Josephson tunnel junctions (MgB2/AlOx/MgB2) have been fabricated for the first time with as-grown MgB2 films formed by molecular beam epitaxy. The junctions exhibit substantial superconducting current (IcRN product ~ 0.8 mV at 4.2K), a well-defined superconducting gap (delta = ~2.3 mV), and clear Fraunhofer patterns. The superconducting gap voltage of delta agrees well with the smaller gap in the multi-gap scenario. The results demonstrate that MgB2 has great promise for superconducting electronics that can be operated at T ~ 20 K.
Josephson junctions based on InAs semiconducting nanowires and Nb superconducting electrodes are fabricated in-situ by a special shadow evaporation scheme for the superconductor electrode. Compared to other metallic superconductors such as Al, Nb has the advantage of a larger superconducting gap which allows operation at higher temperatures and magnetic fields. Our junctions are fabricated by shadow evaporation of Nb on pairs of InAs nanowires grown selectively on two adjacent tilted Si (111) facets and crossing each other at a small distance. The upper wire relative to the deposition source a…
We characterize a niobium-based superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor (Nb-SQUIPT) built upon a Nb-Cu-Nb SNS weak link. The Nb-SQUIPT and SNS devices are fabricated simultaneously in two separate lithography and deposition steps, relying on Ar ion cleaning of the Nb contact surfaces. The quality of the Nb-Cu interface is characterized by measuring the temperature-dependent equilibrium critical supercurrent of the SNS junction. In the Nb-SQUIPT device, we observe a maximum flux-to-current transfer function value of about 55 nA/Φ_0 in the sub-gap regime of bias voltages. This …
We fabricated high quality $\Nb/\Al_2Ø_3/\Ni_{0.6}\Cu_{0.4}/\Nb$ superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson tunnel junctions. Depending on the thickness of the ferromagnetic $\Ni_{0.6}\Cu_{0.4}$ layer and on the ambient temperature, the junctions were in the 0 or $π$ ground state. All junctions have homogeneous interfaces showing almost perfect Fraunhofer patterns. The $\Al_2Ø_3$ tunnel barrier allows to achieve rather low damping, which is desired for many experiments especially in the quantum domain. The McCumber parameter $β_c$ increases exponentially with decreasing temp…
In systems with reduced dimensions quantum fluctuations have a strong influence on the electronic conduction, even at very low temperature. In superconductors this is especially interesting, since the coherent state of the superconducting electrons is strongly interacting with these fluctuations and therefore is a sensitive tool to study them. In this paper, we report on comprehensive measurements of superconducting nanowires in the quantum phase slip regime. Using an intrinsic electromigration process, we have developed a method to lower the resistance of lithographically fabricated highly re…
Self-shunted aluminum Josephson junctions with high-transparency barriers were fabricated using the shadow-evaporation technique and measured at low temperatures, T=25 mK. Due to high junction transparency, the IV-characteristics were found to be of only small hysteresis with retrapping-to-switching current ratio of up to 80%. The observed critical currents were close to the Ambegaokar-Baratoff values (up to 80-100%). Good barrier quality was confirmed by the low subgap leakage currents in the quasiparticle branches, which makes the self-shunted Al junctions promising for application in integr…
We present measurements of the current-phase relation (CPR) of Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor (SFS) Josephson junctions as a function of temperature. The CPR is determined by incorporating the junction into a superconducting loop coupled to a dc SQUID, allowing measurement of the junction phase difference. Junctions fabricated with a thin (~ 22 nm) barrier of Cu0.47Ni0.53 sandwiched between Nb electrodes exhibit a re-entrant critical current with temperature, vanishing at T =T_pi ~ 2-4 K. We find that the critical current is negative for T < T_pi, indicating that the junction is a p…
An intrinsic Josephson junction has been successfully fabricated without any micro-fabrication technique. Two Bi2212 whiskers were crossed with one another and joined by post-annealing. The inter-whisker electrical transport properties were measured by the four-probe method. The temperature dependence of resistance exhibited metallic behavior above TC. The resistance decreased to zero around 80K, corresponding to the superconducting transition. The current-voltage characteristics at 5K exhibited a small hysteresis and voltage jump, which can be explained by the intrinsic Josephson effect.
