Van der Waals heterostructures offer attractive opportunities to design quantum materials. For instance, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess three quantum degrees of freedom: spin, valley index, and layer index. Further, twisted TMD heterobilayers can form moiré patterns that modulate the electronic band structure according to atomic registry, leading to spatial confinement of interlayer exciton (IXs). Here we report the observation of spin-layer locking of IXs trapped in moiré potentials formed in a heterostructure of bilayer 2H-MoSe$_2$ and monolayer WSe$_2$. The phenomenon of locked electron spin and layer index leads to two quantum-confined IX species with distinct spin-layer-valley configurations. Furthermore, we observe that the atomic registries of the moiré trapping sites in the three layers are intrinsically locked together due to the 2H-type stacking characteristic of bilayer TMDs. These results identify the layer index as a useful degree of freedom to engineer tunable few-level quantum systems in two-dimensional heterostructures.
Moiré superlattices provide a powerful way to engineer properties of electrons and excitons in two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures. The moiré effect can be especially strong for interlayer excitons, where electrons and holes reside in different layers and can be addressed separately. In particular, it was recently proposed that the moiré superlattice potential not only localizes interlayer exciton states at different superlattice positions, but also hosts an emerging moiré quasi-angular momentum (QAM) that periodically switches the optical selection rules for interlayer excitons at …
Cascade transition between energy levels has important applications, such as in quantum information protocols and quantum cascade lasers. In two-dimensional heterostructure, the moiré superlattice potential can result in multiple interlayer exciton (IX) energy levels. We demonstrate the cascade transitions between such moiré IXs by performing time- and energy-resolved photoluminescence measurements. We show that the lower-energy moiré IX can be excited to higher-energy ones, facilitating IX population inversion.
Different atomistic registry between the layers forming the inner and outer nanotubes can form one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals (vdW) moiré superlattices. Unlike the two-dimensional (2D) vdW moiré superlattices, effects of 1D vdW moiré superlattices on electronic and optical properties in 1D moiré superlattices are not well understood, and they are often neglected. In this Perspective, we summarize new experimental observations and theoretical perspectives related to interlayer interactions in double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs), a representative 1D vdW moiré system. Our discussion will f…
Moiré superlattices in van der Waals heterostructures have emerged as a powerful tool for engineering novel quantum phenomena. Here we report the observation of a correlated interlayer exciton insulator in a double-layer heterostructure composed of a WSe2 monolayer and a WS2/WSe2 moiré bilayer that are separated by an ultrathin hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). The moiré WS2/WSe2 bilayer features a Mott insulator state at hole density p/p0 = 1, where p0 corresponds to one hole per moiré lattice site. When electrons are added to the Mott insulator in the WS2/WSe2 moiré bilayer and an equal number …
Moiré superlattices can induce correlated-electronic phases in twisted van-der-Waals materials. Strongly correlated quantum phenomena emerge, such as superconductivity and the Mott-insulating state. However, moiré superlattices produced through artificial stacking can be quite inhomogeneous, which hampers the development of a clear correlation between the moiré period and the emerging electrical and optical properties. Here we demonstrate in twisted-bilayer transition-metal dichalcogenides that low-frequency Raman scattering can be utilized not only to detect atomic reconstruction, but also to…
Recently, moiré superlattices have attracted considerable attentions because they are found to exhibit intriguing electronic phenomena of tunable Mott insulators and unconventional superconductivity. These phenomena are highly related to the physical mechanism of the interlayer coupling. However, up to now, there has not existed any theory that can completely interpret the experimental results of the interlayer conductance of moiré superlattice. In order to solve this problem, the superposition of periods and the corresponding coherence, which are the essential characteristics of moiré superla…
We explore the skyrmion formation and control possibilities in 2D magnets from the ubiquitous moiré pattern in vdW heterostructures. Using the example of a ferromagnetic monolayer on an antiferromagnetic substrate, we demonstrate a new origin of skyrmions in the 2D magnets, from the lateral modulation of interlayer magnetic coupling by the locally different atomic registries in moiré. The moiré skyrmions are doubly degenerate with opposite topological charge, and trapped at an ordered array of sites with the moiré periodicity that can be dramatically tuned by strain and interlayer translation.…
Stacking-dependent interlayer interactions are important for understanding the structural and electronic properties in incommensurable two dimensional material assemblies where long-range moiré patterns arise due to small lattice constant mismatch or twist angles. Here, we study the stacking-dependent interlayer coupling energies between graphene (G) and hexagonal boron nitride (BN) homo- and hetero-structures using high-level random-phase approximation (RPA) ab initio calculations. Our results show that although total binding energies within LDA and RPA differ substantially between a factor o…
Moiré patterns with a superlattice potential can be formed by vertically stacking two layered materials with a relative twist or lattice constant mismatch. The moiré superlattice can generate flat bands that result in new correlated insulating, superconducting, and topological states. Strong electron correlations, tunable by the fractional filling, have been observed in both graphene and transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) based systems. In addition, in TMD based systems, the moiré potential landscape can trap interlayer excitons (IX) at specific atomic registries. Here we report that spatia…
Geometrical moiré patterns, generic for almost aligned bilayers of two-dimensional (2D) crystals with similar lattice structure but slightly different lattice constants, lead to zone folding and miniband formation for electronic states. Here, we show that moiré superlattice (mSL) effects in $\mathrm{MoSe}_2/\mathrm{WS}_2$ and $\mathrm{MoTe}_2/\mathrm{MoSe}_2$ heterobilayers that feature alignment of the band edges are enhanced by resonant interlayer hybridization, and anticipate similar features in twisted homobilayers of TMDs, including examples of narrow minibands close to the actual band ed…
Moiré superlattices in atomically thin van-der-Waals heterostructures hold great promise for an extended control of electronic and valleytronic lifetimes, the confinement of excitons in artificial moiré lattices, and the formation of novel exotic quantum phases. Such moiré-induced emergent phenomena are particularly strong for interlayer excitons, where the hole and the electron are localized in different layers of the heterostructure. In order to exploit the full potential of correlated moiré and exciton physics, a thorough understanding of the ultrafast interlayer exciton formation process a…
We present a theory of optical absorption by interlayer excitons in a heterobilayer formed from transition metal dichalcogenides. The theory accounts for the presence of small relative rotations that produce a momentum shift between electron and hole bands located in different layers, and a moiré pattern in real space. Because of the momentum shift, the optically active interlayer excitons are located at the moiré Brillouin zone's corners, instead of at its center, and would have elliptical optical selection rules if the individual layers were translationally invariant. We show that the excito…

Franckeite is a naturally occurring layered mineral with a structure composed of alternating stacks of SnS2-like and PbS-like layers. Although this superlattice is composed of a sequence of isotropic two-dimensional layers, it exhibits a spontaneous rippling that makes the material structurally anisotropic. We demonstrate that this rippling comes hand in hand with an inhomogeneous in-plane strain profile and anisotropic electrical, vibrational and optical properties. We argue that this symmetry breakdown results from a spatial modulation of the van der Waals interaction between layers due to t…
In graphene moiré superlattices, electronic interactions between layers are mostly hidden as band structures get crowded because of folding, making their interpretation cumbersome. Here, the evolution of the electronic band structure as a function of the interlayer rotation angle is studied using Density Functional Theory followed by unfolding bands and then comparing them to their corresponding individual components. We observe interactions at regions not theoretically elucidated so far, where for small interlayer angles, gaps turn into discrete-like states that are evenly spaced in energy. W…
Moiré superlattices formed in van der Waals bilayers have enabled the creation and manipulation of new quantum states, as is exemplified by the discovery of superconducting and correlated insulating states in twisted bilayer graphene near the magic angle. Twisted bilayer semiconductors may lead to tunable exciton lattices and topological states, yet signatures of moiré excitons have been reported only in closely angularly-aligned bilayers. Here we report tuning of moiré lattice in WS$_{2}$ /MoSe$_{2}$ bilayers over a wide range of twist angles, leading to the continuous tuning of moiré lattice…
Interference effects in finite sections of one-dimensional moiré crystals are investigated using a Landauer-Büttiker formalism within the tight-binding approximation. We explain interlayer transport in double-wall carbon nanotubes and design a predictive model. Wave function interference is visible at the mesoscale: in the strong coupling regime, as a periodic modulation of quantum conductance and emergent localized states; in the localized-insulating regime, as a suppression of interlayer transport, and oscillations of the density of states. These results could be exploited to design quantum …
The creation of moiré patterns in crystalline solids is a powerful approach to manipulate their electronic properties, which are fundamentally influenced by periodic potential landscapes. In 2D materials, a moiré pattern with a superlattice potential can form by vertically stacking two layered materials with a twist and/or finite lattice constant difference. This unique approach has led to emergent electronic phenomena, including the fractal quantum Hall effect, tunable Mott insulators, and unconventional superconductivity. Furthermore, theory predicts intriguing effects on optical excitations…
In van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures formed by stacking two monolayer semiconductors, lattice mismatch or rotational misalignment introduces an in-plane moiré superlattice. While it is widely recognized that a moiré superlattice can modulate the electronic band structure and lead to novel transport properties including unconventional superconductivity and insulating behavior driven by correlations, its influence on optical properties has not been investigated experimentally. We present spectroscopic evidence that interlayer excitons are confined by the moiré potential in a high-quality MoSe…
The nanoscale periodic potentials introduced by moiré patterns in semiconducting van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide a new platform for designing exciton superlattices. To realize these applications, a thorough understanding of the localization and delocalization of interlayer excitons in the moiré potentials is necessary. Here, we investigated interlayer exciton dynamics and transport modulated by the moiré potentials in WS$_2$-WSe$_2$ heterobilayers in time, space, and momentum domains using transient absorption microscopy combined with first-principles calculations. Experimental re…
We study the superlattice minibands produced by the interplay between moiré pattern induced by hexagonal BN substrate on graphene layer and the interlayer coupling in bilayer graphene with Bernal stacking (BLG). We compare moiré miniband features in BLG, where they are affected by the interlayer asymmetry of BLG-hBN heterostructure and trigonal warping characteristic for electrons in Bernal-stacked bilayers with those found in monolayer graphene.
Moiré interlayer exciton in transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayer features a permanent electric dipole that enables the electrostatic control of its flow, and optical dipole that is spatially varying in the moiré landscape. We show the hybridization of moiré interlayer exciton with photons in a planar 2D cavity leads to two types of moiré polaritons that exhibit distinct forms of topological transport phenomena including the spin/valley Hall and polarization Hall effects, which feature remarkable electrical tunability through the control of exciton-cavity detuning by the interlayer bia…
Transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers offer attractive opportunities to realize lattices of interacting bosons with several degrees of freedom. Such heterobilayers can feature moiré patterns that modulate their electronic band structure, leading to spatial confinement of single interlayer excitons (IXs) that act as quantum emitters with $C_3$ symmetry. However, the narrow emission linewidths of the quantum emitters contrast with a broad ensemble IX emission observed in nominally identical heterobilayers, opening a debate regarding the origin of IX emission. Here we report the continuo…

Optoelectronic properties of van der Waals homostructures can be selectively engineered by the relative twist angle between layers. Here, we study the twist-dependent moire coupling in MoSe2 homobilayers. For small angles, we find a pronounced redshift of the K-K and Γ-K excitons accompanied by a transition from K-K to Γ-K emission. Both effects can be traced back to the underlying moire pattern in the MoSe2 homobilayers, as confirmed by our low-energy continuum model for different moire excitons. We identify two distinct intralayer moire excitons for R-stacking, while H-stacking yields two de…
The properties of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are drastically altered by a tunable moiré superlattice arising from periodic variations of atomic alignment between the layers. Exciton diffusion represents an important channel of energy transport in semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). While early studies performed on TMD heterobilayers have suggested that carriers and excitons exhibit long diffusion lengths, a rich variety of scenarios can exist. In a moiré crystal with a large supercell size and deep potential, interlayer excitons may be completely localized. As the…
Twisted van der Waals heterostructures and the corresponding superlattices, moire superlattices, are remarkable new material platforms, in which electron interactions and excited-state properties can be engineered. Particularly, the band offsets between adjacent layers can separate excited electrons and holes, forming interlayer excitons that exhibit unique optical properties. In this work, we employ the first-principles GW-Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE) method to calculate quasiparticle band gaps, interlayer excitons, and their modulated excited-state properties in twisted MoSe2/WSe2 bilayers …
The emerging field of twistronics, which harnesses the twist angle between two-dimensional materials, represents a promising route for the design of quantum materials, as the twist-angle-induced superlattices offer means to control topology and strong correlations. At the small twist limit, and particularly under strain, as atomic relaxation prevails, the emergent moiré superlattice encodes elusive insights into the local interlayer interaction. Here we introduce moiré metrology as a combined experiment-theory framework to probe the stacking energy landscape of bilayer structures at the 0.1 me…
By using the first-principles method based on density of functional theory, we study the electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene with some specific twist angles and interlayer spacings. With the decrease of the twist angle(the unit cell becomes larger), the energy band becomes narrower and Coulomb repulsion increases, leading to the enhancement of electronic correlation; On the other hand, as the interlayer spacing decreases and the interlayer coupling becomes stronger, the correlation becomes stronger. By tuning the interlayer coupling, we can realize the strongly correlated state w…
Layered two-dimensional materials exhibit rich transport and optical phenomena in twisted or lattice-incommensurate heterostructures with spatial variations of interlayer hybridization arising from moiré interference effects. Here, we report experimental and theoretical studies of excitons in twisted heterobilayers and heterotrilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides. Using MoSe$_2$-WSe$_2$ stacks as representative realizations of twisted van der Waals bilayer and trilayer heterostructures, we observe contrasting optical signatures and interpret them in the theoretical framework of interlay…
In long-wavelength moiré patterns of homobilayer semiconductors, the layer pseudospin of electrons is subject to a sizable Zeeman field that is spatially modulated from the interlayer coupling in moiré. By interference of this spatial modulation with a homogeneous but dynamically tunable component from out-of-plane electric field, we show that the spatial-temporal profile of the overall Zeeman field therefore features a topological texture that can be controlled in an ultrafast timescale by a terahertz field or an interlayer bias. Such dynamical modulation leads to the emergence of an in-plane…
In bilayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, the twist angle between layers can be used to introduce a highly regular periodic potential modulation on a length scale that is large compared to the unit cell. In such structures, correlated states can emerge, in which excitons in the heterostructure are strongly localized to the potential minima due to exciton-exciton interactions. We explore the transition between Mott and extended exciton phases in terms of a moiré-Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. Hopping and on-site interaction parameters are obtained from a Wannier representation …
Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) forms a quasicrystal whose structural and electronic properties depend on the angle of rotation between its layers. Here we present a scanning tunneling microscopy study of gate-tunable tBLG devices supported by atomically-smooth and chemically inert hexagonal boron nitride (BN). The high quality of these tBLG devices allows identification of coexisting moiré patterns and moiré super-superlattices produced by graphene-graphene and graphene-BN interlayer interactions. Furthermore, we examine additional tBLG spectroscopic features in the local density of states be…
The moiré engineering of two-dimensional magnets opens unprecedented opportunities to design novel magnetic states with promises for spintronic device applications. The possibility of stabilizing skyrmions in these materials without chiral spin-orbit couplings or dipolar interactions is yet to be explored. Here, we investigate the formation and control of ground state topological spin textures (TSTs) in moiré CrI3 using stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert simulations. We unveil the emergence of interlayer vortex and antivortex Heisenberg exchange fields, stabilizing spontaneous and field-assist…
In twisted bilayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), a combination of structural rippling and electronic coupling gives rise to periodic moiré potentials that can confine charged and neutral excitations. Here, we report experimental measurements of the structure and spectroscopic properties of twisted bilayers of WSe2 and MoSe2 in the H-stacking configuration using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Our experiments reveal that the moiré potential in these bilayers at small angles is unexpectedly large, reaching values of above 300 meV for the valence band and 150 me…
Transition-metal dichalcogenide heterostructures exhibit moiré patterns that spatially modulate the electronic structure across the material's plane. For certain material pairs, this modulation acts as a potential landscape with deep, trigonally symmetric wells capable of localizing interlayer excitons, forming periodic arrays of quantum emitters. Here, we study these moiré localized exciton states and their optical properties. By numerically solving the two-body problem for an interacting electron-hole pair confined by a trigonal potential, we compute the localized exciton spectra for differe…
We investigate the magnetic proximity effect in van der Waals heterostructure formed by a monolayer semiconductor stacked on a 2D ferromagnet, where the lattice mismatch and twisting between the layers typically lead to the formation of moiré pattern. We find that the magnetic proximity effect arising from the spin dependent interlayer coupling depends sensitively on the interlayer atomic registry. Consequently, in the moiré pattern, the spatial variation of the atomic registry leads to a lateral modulation of magnetic proximity field. Such moiré modulated magnetic proximity effect manifests a…
