We study the radiative energy loss contribution to proton stopping in $AA$ collisions. The analyses is performed within the light-cone path integral approach to induced gluon emission. We have found that the radiative correction can fill in partly the midrapidity dip in the net proton rapidity distribution in $AA$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}\sim 10$ GeV. We argue that at $\sqrt{s}\sim 10$ GeV the net proton fluctuations at midrapidity may be dominated by the initial fluctuations of the proton flow, which, to a good accuracy, should be binomial.
We discuss baryon stopping in the Color Glass Condensate description of high energy scattering. We consider the scattering of a distribution of valence quarks on an ultra-relativistic sheet of colored charge. We compute the distribution of scattered quarks from a composite projectile, and calculate the baryon currents before and after the collisions and on an event by event basis. We obtain simple analytic estimates of the baryon number compression and rapidity shifts, which in the idealized case of plane wave scattering, produce results that agree with considerations of Anishetty-Koehler-McLe…
We reconsider baryon stopping in relativistic heavy-ion collisions in a nonequilibrium-statistical framework. The approach combines earlier formulations based on quantum chromodynamics with a relativistic diffusion model through a suitably derived fluctuation-dissipation relation, thus allowing for a fully time-dependent theory that is consistent with QCD. We use an existing framework for relativistic stochastic processes in spacetime that are Markovian in phase space, and adapt it to derive a Fokker-Planck equation in rapidity space, which is solved numerically. The time evolution of the net-…
It is argued that an irregularity in the baryon stopping is a natural consequence of onset of deconfinement occurring in the compression stage of a nuclear collision. It is an effect of the softest point inherent in an equation of state (EoS) with a deconfinement transition. In order to illustrate this effect, calculations within the three-fluid model were performed with three different EoS's: a purely hadronic EoS, an EoS with a first-order phase transition and that with a smooth crossover transition.
We propose a numerical definition for baryon stopping in relativistic heavy ion collisions that is obtainable from final hadron rapidity distributions as well as from bremsstrahlung measurements. Thus a new channel of communication is opened between the two methods.
Recent results from the H1 experiment [1] have confirmed the existence of a substantial baryon asymmetry of the proton sea at small $x$ with magnitude predicted in hep-ph/9607486. This is a strong support for the idea [3] that baryon number can be transferred by gluons through a large rapidity interval without attenuation. In this paper we calculate the dependence of baryon asymmetry on associated multiplicity of produced hadrons which turns out to be very sensitive to the underlying dynamics. Comparison with data [1] confirms the dominance of the gluonic mechanism of baryon number transfer an…
In collisions between heavy ions at ultra-relativistic energies the participating protons lose energy, which is converted into new particles. As the protons slow down, they emit bremsstrahlung radiation. The yield and angular distribution of the emitted radiation are sensitive probes of how much energy the incoming protons have lost. In this paper, the spectrum of bremsstrahlung radiation is calculated for different stopping scenarios, and the results are compared with the expected yield of photons from hadronic interactions.
It is argued that the experimentally observed baryon stopping indicates a non-monotonous behaviour as a function of the incident energy of colliding nuclei. This can be quantified by a midrapidity reduced curvature of the net-proton rapidity spectrum and reveals itself as a zigzag irregularity in the excitation function of this curvature. The three-fluid dynamic calculations with a hadronic equation of state (EoS) fail to reproduce this irregularity. At the same time, the same calculations with an EoS involving a first-order phase transition and a crossover one into the quark-gluon phase do re…
It is argued that the experimentally observed baryon stopping may indicate (within the present experimental uncertainties) a non-monotonous behaviour as a function of the incident energy of colliding nuclei. This can be quantified by a midrapidity reduced curvature of the net-proton rapidity spectrum. The above non-monotonous behaviour reveals itself as a "zig-zag" irregularity in the excitation function of this curvature. The three-fluid dynamic calculations with a hadronic equation of state (EoS) fail to reproduce this irregularity. At the same time, the same calculations with an EoS involvi…
The stopping behaviour of baryons in massive heavy ion collisions (at SPS, RHIC and LHC) is investigated within different microscopic models. At SPS-energies the predictions range from full stopping to virtually total transparency. Experimental data are indicating strong stopping. The initial baryo-chemical potentials and temperatures at collider energies and their impact on the formation probability of strange baryon clusters and strangelets are discussed.
The quark-gluon plasma is considered to behave as a relativistic viscous fluid in the high-energy heavy ion collisions. In this study, I develop and estimate a second order dissipative hydrodynamic model at finite baryon density with effects of baryon dissipation together with those of shear and bulk viscosities. It is found that the hydrodynamic evolution effectively reduces baryon stopping, suggesting that the collisions are less transparent at the initial stage. Also the net baryon distribution is found sensitive to baryon dissipation as well as to viscosities. The results indicate that the…
We argue that the amount of baryon stopping observed in the central rapidity region of heavy ion collisions at RHIC is proportional to the nuclear valence quark distributions at small x. By generalizing Mueller's dipole model to describe Reggeons we construct a non-linear evolution equation for the valence quark distributions at small x in the leading double-logarithmic approximation. The equation includes the effects of gluon saturation in it. The solution of the evolution equation gives a valence quark distribution function $dn_{val}/dy \sim e^{-(0.4\div0.5) y}$. We show that this y-dependen…
The partonic energy loss has been calculated taking both the hard and soft contributions for all the $2 \to 2$ processes, revealing the importance of the individual channels. Cancellation of the intermediate separation scale has been exhibited. Subtleties related to the identical final state partons have properly been taken into account. The estimated collisional loss is compared with its radiative counter part. We show that there exists a critical energy ($E_c$) below which the collisional loss is more than its radiative counterpart. In addition, we present closed form formulas for both the c…
This paper reviews our recent findings on the dynamics of transport of baryon number in proton-induced reactions at the CERN SPS. These are put in a more general context of the present understanding of baryon stopping phenomena up to LHC and cosmic ray energies. The implications of our studies, advantages to be provided by modern and high quality experimental data, and perspectives of new measurements are shortly discussed.
Baryon stopping at the SPS and RHIC energies is calculated by introducing a new baryon junction mechanism into HIJING. The exchange of a baryon junction, according to Regge phenomenology, leads to a cosh(y/2) rapidity dependence and an s^(-1/4) energy dependence of the inclusive baryon cross section. This baryon junction dynamics also leads naturally to enhanced p_T broadening in pA and AA together with enhanced mid-rapidity hyperon production.
We explore the response to energetic partons of a baryon-charged medium produced in low energy heavy-ion collisions in which the partonic energy loss rate is expected to depend on both temperature and baryon chemical potential. The energy and momentum deposited by the partons are described by dynamical sources added to hydrodynamic equations of motion. We study the distortions of various hydrodynamic quantities, especially the energy and baryon densities, induced by energetic partons plowing through the medium. By studying the contribution from this medium response to the emission spectra of s…
The amount of proton stopping in central Pb+Pb collisions from 20-160 AGeV as well as hyperon and antihyperon rapidity distributions are calculated within the UrQMD model in comparison to experimental data at 40, 80 and 160 AGeV taken recently from the NA49 collaboration. Furthermore, the amount of baryon stopping at 160 AGeV for Pb+Pb collisions is studied as a function of centrality in comparison to the NA49 data. We find that the strange baryon yield is reasonably described for central collisions, however, the rapidity distributions are somewhat more narrow than the data. Moreover, the expe…
The net-baryon production at forward rapidities is investigated considering the Color Glass Condensate formalism. We assume that at large energies the coherence of the projectile quarks is lost and that the leading baryon production mechanism changes from recombination to independent fragmentation. The phenomenological implications for net-baryon production in $pp/pA/AA$ collisions are analysed and predictions for LHC energies are presented.

It is argued that an irregularity in the baryon stopping is a natural consequence of a phase transition occurring in the compression stage of a nuclear collision. It is a combined effect of the softest point inherent in an equation of state (EoS) with a phase transition and a change in the nonequilibrium dynamics from hadronic to partonic transport. Thus, this irregularity is a signal from a hot and dense stage of the nuclear collision. In order to illustrate this proposition, calculations within the three-fluid model were performed with three different EoS's: a purely hadronic EoS, an EoS wit…
We show that the baryon stopping observed in heavy ion collisions both at CERN-SPS and at RHIC can be derived from the one observed in proton-proton collisions. No increase in the size of the baryon junction component is required between small size $(pp)$ and large size (AA) systems.
We derive a simple formula for the stopping distance for a high-energy quark traveling through a weakly-coupled quark gluon plasma. The result is given to next-to-leading-order in an expansion in inverse logarithms ln(E/T), where T is the temperature of the plasma. We also define a stopping distance for gluons and give a leading-log result. Discussion of stopping distance has a theoretical advantage over discussion of energy loss rates in that stopping distances can be generalized to the case of strong coupling, where one may not speak of individual partons.
The baryon distribution is studied by using a parton cascade model which is based on pQCD incorporating hard partonic scattering and dynamical hadronization scheme. In order to study baryon distribution, baryonic cluster formation is newly implemented as well as hadronic higher resonance states from parton/beam cluster decay. The net baryon number and charged hadron distributions are calculated with different $K$-factors in which parameters are fixed by elementary $p\bar p$ data at $E_{c.m.}=200$ GeV. It is found that baryon stopping behavior at SPS and RHIC energies are not consequence of hard…
A novel mechanism of H^0 and strangelet production in hadronic interactions within the Gribov-Regge approach is presented. In contrast to traditional distillation approaches, here the production of multiple (strange) quark bags does not require large baryon densities or a QGP. The production cross section increases with center of mass energy. Rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of the H^0 are predicted for pp collisions at E_lab = 160 AGeV (SPS) and \sqrt s = 200 AGeV (RHIC). The predicted total H^0 multiplicities are of order of the Omega-baryon yield and can be accessed by the NA4…
Parton equilibration for a thermally equilibrated but chemically non-equilibrated quark gluon plasma is presented. Parton equilibration is studied enforcing baryon numbver conservation. Process like quark flavour interchanging is also considered. The degree of equilibration is studied comparatively for the various reactions / constraints that are being considered.
We calculate the inclusive small-x valence quark production cross section in proton-nucleus collisions at high energies. The calculation is performed in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate formalism. We consider both the case when the valence quark originates inside the nucleus and the case when it originates inside the proton. We first calculate the cross section in the quasi-classical approximation resumming the multiple rescatterings with the nucleus. Then we include the the effects of double logarithmic reggeon evolution and leading logarithmic gluon evolution in the obtained cross…
We relate the fragmentation functions of partons into mesons and baryons in the framework of recombination of shower partons. The results are in reasonable agreement with the data. The implication is that the meson and baryon fragmentation functions are not independent when hadronization of the shower partons are taken into account. The conclusion therefore closes a conceptual gap in the system of fragmentation functions whose $Q^2$ evolution has been more extensively studied than their interrelationship.
We compute the mid-rapidity densities of pions, kaons, baryons and antibaryons in $Au$--$Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 130 GeV in the Dual Parton Model supplemented with final state interactions, and we present a comparison with available data.
We investigate stopping and baryon transport in central relativistic Pb + Pb and Au + Au collisions. At energies reached at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron [sqrt(s_NN) = 6.3-17.3 GeV] and at RHIC (62.4 GeV), we determine the fragmentation-peak positions from the data. The resulting linear growth of the peak positions with beam rapidity is in agreement with our results from a QCD-based approach that accounts for gluon saturation. No discontinuities in the net-proton fragmentation peak positions occur in the expected transition region from partons to hadrons at 6-10 GeV.
The Lorentz contracted form of the static wave functions is used to calculate the valence parton distributions for mesons and baryons, boosting the rest frame solutions of the path integral Hamiltonian. It is argued that nonperturbative parton densities are due to excited multigluon baryon states. A simple model is proposed for these states ensuring realistic behavior of valence and sea quarks and gluon parton densities at $Q^2= 10 (GeV/c)^2$. Applying the same model to the proton spin problem one obtains $Σ_3 = 0.18 $ for the same $Q^2$.
The impact of the experimental acceptance, i.e. transverse-momentum ($p_T$) cut-off and limited rapidity region, on the earlier predicted irregularity in the excitation function of the baryon stopping is studied. This irregularity is a consequence of the onset of deconfinement occurring in the compression stage of a nuclear collision and manifests itself as a wiggle in the excitation function of the reduced curvature ($C_y$) of the net-proton rapidity distribution at midrapidity. It is demonstrated that the wiggle is a very robust signal of a first-order phase transition that survives even und…
Simulations of relativistic heavy-ion collisions within the three-fluid model employing a purely hadronic equation of state (EoS) and two versions of the EoS involving deconfinement transition are presented. The latter are an EoS with the first-order phase transition and that with a smooth crossover transition. The model setup is described in detail. The analysis is performed in a wide range of incident energies 2.7 GeV $< \sqrt{s_{NN}} <$ 39 GeV in terms of the center-of-mass energy. Results on proton and net-proton rapidity distributions are reported. Comparison with available data indicate …
We calculate the net baryon rapidity distribution in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in the framework of the Parton Cascade Model (PCM). Parton rescattering and fragmentation leads to a substantial increase in the net baryon density at mid-rapidity over the density produced by initial primary parton-parton scatterings. The PCM is able to describe the measured net baryon density at RHIC.
Baryon-strangeness correlation (C$_{BS}$) has been investigated with a multi-phase transport model (AMPT) in $^{197}$Au + $^{197}$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. The centrality dependence of C$_{BS}$ is presented within the model, from partonic phase to hadronic matter. We find that the system still reserve partial predicted signatures of C$_{BS}$ after parton coalescence. But after hadronic rescattering, the predicted signatures will be obliterated completely. So it seems that both coalescence hadronization process and hadronic rescattering are responsible for the disappearance of…
The large and saturating differential elliptic flow v2(pT) observed in Au+Au reactions at RHIC so far could only be explained assuming an order of magnitude denser initial parton system than estimated from perturbative QCD. Hadronization via parton coalescence can resolve this ``opacity puzzle'' because it enhances hadron elliptic flow at large pT relative to that of partons at the same transverse momentum. An experimentally testable consequence of the coalescence scenario is that v2(pT) saturates at about 50% higher values for baryons than for mesons. In addition, if strange quarks have weake…
We argue that the emission of hadrons with transverse momentum up to about 5 GeV/c in central relativistic heavy ion collisions is dominated by recombination, rather than fragmentation of partons. This mechanism provides a natural explanation for the observed constant baryon-to-meson ratio of about one and the apparent lack of a nuclear suppression of the baryon yield in this momentum range. Fragmentation becomes dominant at higher transverse momentum, but the transition point is delayed by the energy loss of fast partons in dense matter.
A parton-hadron cascade model which is the extension of hadronic cascade model incorporating hard partonic scattering based on HIJING is presented to describe the space-time evolution of parton/hadron system produced by ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions. Hadron yield, baryon stopping and transverse momentum distribution are calculated and compared with HIJING and VNI.
The stopping of baryons in heavy ion collisions at beam momenta of $p_{\rm lab} = 20-160A$ GeV is lacking a quantitative description within theoretical calculations. Heavy ion reactions at these energies are experimentally explored at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and will be studied at future facilities such as FAIR and NICA. Since the net baryon density is determined by the amount of stopping, this is the pre-requisiste for any investigation of other observables related to structures in the QCD phase diagram such as a first-order phase tran…
The behavior of hadronic matter at high baryon densities is studied within Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (URQMD). Baryonic stopping is observed for Au+Au collisions from SIS up to SPS energies. The excitation function of flow shows strong sensitivities to the underlying equation of state (EOS), allowing for systematic studies of the EOS. Effects of a density dependent pole of the $ρ$-meson propagator on dilepton spectra are studied for different systems and centralities at CERN energies.
We apply our recently formulated Gluon Exchange Model (GEM) to baryon production in proton-nucleus reactions involving N>1 proton-nucleon collisions. We propose a description scheme for the process of soft color octet (gluon) exchange, based on the assumption that probabilities to form an effective diquark are equal for all allowed pairs of quarks. The latter effective diquark can form either from two valence, one valence and one sea, or from two sea quarks. Consequently we calculate the probabilities for different color configurations involving diquarks of valence-valence, valence-sea and sea…
We present a new formulation of pseudoscalar meson loop corrections to nucleon parton distributions within a nonlocal covariant chiral effective field theory, including contributions from SU(3) octet and decuplet baryons. The nonlocal Lagrangian, constrained by requirements of local gauge invariance and Lorentz-invariant ultraviolet regularization, generates additional interactions associated with gauge links. We use these to compute the full set of proton $\to$ meson + baryon splitting functions, which in general contain on-shell and off-shell contributions, in addition to $δ$-function terms …
We examine whether the breakdown in elliptic flow quark number scaling observed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energy scan is related to the turning off of deconfinement by testing the hypothesis that hydrodynamics and parton coalescence always apply, but are obscured, at lower energies, by variations in the widths of quark and anti-quark rapidity distribution. We find that this effect is enough to spoil quark number scaling in elliptic flow. A lack of scaling in data therefore does not signal the absence of partonic degrees of freedom and hadronization by coalescence. In a coal…
We investigate the enhancement of yields of strange and multi-strange baryons in proton-proton (p+p), proton-lead (p+Pb) and lead-lead (Pb+Pb) collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies from a dynamical core-corona initialization model. We first generate partons just after the collisions by using event generators. These partons dynamically generate the quark gluon plasma (QGP) fluids through the source terms in the hydrodynamic equations. According to the core-corona picture, this process tends to happen where the density of generated partons is high and their transverse momentum i…
We introduce a new formulation of the diquark breaking mechanism which describes with no free parameters the huge nuclear stopping observed in central nucleus-nucleus collisions. Supplemented, in the dual parton model, with strings originating from diquark--antidiquark pairs from the nucleon sea, it gives a substantial increase of hyperon and antihyperon yields from $pPb$ to central $PbPb$ collisions. Compared to data, this increase is slightly underestimated for $Λ$'s and $Ξ$'s but is five times too small for $Ω$'s. Introducing final state interactions, a reasonable description of all baryon …
