There are many possibilities of scenarios in the early universe, which can give rise to the same observational signals due to the degeneracy among each other, caused by equivalence under the conformal transformations. In order to break the degeneracy, in this paper we take into account the so-called "frame-invariant variables" proposed by A. Ijjas and P. J. Steinhardt in \cite{Ijjas:2015zma}. We discuss how the different scenarios will distribute in different parametric space constructed from those variables, waiting for the judgement of real observations in the future. Several concrete models with explicit non-minimal coupling functions are also discussed.
We study the interacting dark energy model with time varying dark energy equation of state. We examine the stability in the perturbation formalism and the degeneracy among the coupling between dark sectors, the time-dependent dark energy equation of state and dark matter abundance in the cosmic microwave background radiation. Further we discuss the possible ways to break such degeneracy by doing global fitting using the latest observational data and we get a tight constraint on the interaction between dark sectors.
An arguable aspect of the modified gravity theories is that many of them present the so-called degeneracy problem. For instance, the cosmological evolution, gravitational collapse and the main features of standard black-hole configurations, can be mimicked by many of those theories. In this communication we revise briefly the appropriate observable quantities to be measured in order to discard alternative theories to LCDM, such as the observed growth of scalar perturbations with Sloan data and the CMB tensor perturbations evolution.
Creation of Cold Dark Matter (CCDM), in the context of Einstein Field Equations, leads to a negative creation pressure, which can be used to explain the accelerated expansion of the Universe. Recently, it has been shown that the dynamics of expansion of such models can not be distinguished from the concordance $Λ$CDM model, even at higher orders in the evolution of density perturbations, leading at the so called "dark degeneracy". However, depending on the form of the CDM creation rate, the inclusion of spatial curvature leads to a different behavior of CCDM when compared to $Λ$CDM, even at ba…
Combining galaxy cluster and void abundances breaks the degeneracy between mean matter density $Ω_{\rm m}$ and power spectrum normalization $σ_8$. In a first for voids, we constrain $Ω_{\rm m} = 0.21 \pm 0.10$ and $σ_8 = 0.95 \pm 0.21$ for a flat $Λ$CDM universe, using extreme-value statistics on the claimed largest cluster and void. The Planck-consistent results detect dark energy with two objects, independently of other dark energy probes. Cluster-void studies also offer complementarity in scale, density, and non-linearity - of particular interest for testing modified-gravity models.
We identify a scalar-tensor model embedded in the Horndeski action whose cosmological background and linear scalar fluctuations are degenerate with the concordance cosmology. The model admits a self-accelerated background expansion at late times that is stable against perturbations with a sound speed attributed to the new field that is equal to the speed of light. While degenerate in scalar fluctuations, self-acceleration of the model implies a present cosmological tensor mode propagation at < 95% of the speed of light with a damping of the wave amplitude that is > 5% less efficient than in ge…
The clustering of X-ray selected AGN appears to be a valuable tool for extracting cosmological information. Using the recent high-precision angular clustering results of ~30000 XMM-Newton soft (0.5-2 keV) X-ray sources (Ebrero et al. 2009), which have a median redshift of $z\sim 1$, and assuming a flat geometry, a constant in comoving coordinates AGN clustering evolution and the AGN bias evolution model of Basilakos et al. (2008), we manage to break the Omega_m-sigma_8 degeneracy. The resulting cosmological constraints are: Omega_m=0.27 (+0.03 -0.05), w=-0.90 (+0.10 -0.16) and sigma_8=0.74 (+0…
One of the exact solutions of f(R) theories of gravity in the presence of different forms of matter exactly mimics the LCDM solution of general relativity at the background level. In this work we study the evolution of scalar cosmological perturbations in the covariant and gauge-invariant formalism and show that although the background in such a model is indistinguishable from the standard LCDM cosmology, this degeneracy is broken at the level of first-order perturbations. This is done by predicting different rates of structure formation in LCDM and the f(R) model both in the complete and quas…
Combining galaxy cluster and void abundances is a novel, powerful way to constrain deviations from General Relativity and the $Λ$CDM model. For a flat $w$CDM model with growth of large-scale structure parameterized by the redshift-dependent growth index $γ(z) = γ_0 + γ_1 z/(1+z)$ of linear matter perturbations, combining void and cluster abundances in future surveys with Euclid and the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST) could improve the Figure of Merit for ($w, γ_0, γ_1$) by a factor of 20 compared to individual abundances. In an ideal case, improvement on current cosmologic…
Mergers of compact stellar remnant are prime targets for the LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave detectors. One hopes that the gravitational wave signals from these merger events can be used to study the mass and spin distribution of stellar remnants, and provide information about black hole horizons and the material properties of neutron stars. However, it has been suggested that degeneracies in the way that the star's mass and spin are imprinted in the waveforms may make it impossible to distinguish between black holes and neutron stars. Here we show that the precession of the orbital plane due to…
We put forward a new proposal for generating the baryon asymmetry of the universe by making use of the dynamics of a $\mathrm{U}(1)$ scalar field coupled to dark matter. High dark matter densities cause the $\mathrm{U}(1)$ symmetry to break spontaneously so that the field acquires a large vacuum expectation value. The symmetry is restored when the density redshifts below a critical value, resulting in the coherent oscillation of the scalar field. A net $B-L$ number can be generated either via baryon number-conserving couplings to the standard model or through small symmetry-violating operators…

Spontaneous symmetry breaking is the foundation of electroweak unification and serves as an integral part of the model building beyond the standard model of particle physics and it also finds interesting applications in the late Universe. We review development related to obtaining the late cosmic acceleration from spontaneous symmetry breaking in the Universe at large scales. This phenomenon is best understood through Ginzburg-Landau theory of phase transitions which we briefly describe. Hereafter, we present elements of spontaneous symmetry breaking in relativistic field theory. We then discu…
We address the problem of determining inflationary characteristics in a model independent way. We start from a recently proposed equation which allows to accurately calculate the value of the inflaton at horizon crossing $ϕ_k$. We then use an equivalent form of this equation to write a formula that relates the number of e-folds from horizon crossing to the pivot scale $N_{ke}+N_{ep}$ with the tensor-to-scalar index $r$, hence a general bound for $N_{ke}+N_{ep}$ follows. $N_{ke}$ is the number of e-folds from the scale factor $a_k$ during inflation to the end of inflation at $a_e$ and $N_{ep}$ …
Using a specific model for the expansion rate of the Universe as a function of scale factor, it is demonstrated that the equation of state of the dark energy cannot be determined uniquely from observations at redshifts $z\lesssim{\rm a few}$ unless the fraction of the mass density of the Universe in nonrelativistic particles, $Ω_M$, somehow can be found independently. A phenomenological model is employed to discuss the utility of additional constraints from the formation of large scale structure and the positions of CMB peaks in breaking the degeneracy among models for the dark energy.
We investigate polarized gravitational waves generated by chiral fermions in the early Universe. In particular, we focus on the contribution from left-handed neutrinos in thermal equilibrium with finite temperature and chemical potential in the radiation dominated era. We compute the correlation functions of gravitational fields pertinent to the Stokes parameter $V$ characterizing the circular polarization of gravitational waves in the Minkowski and expanding spacetime backgrounds. In the expanding universe, we find that the thermalized neutrinos induce a non-vanishing $V$ linear to the neutri…
We discuss a degeneracy between the geometry of the universe and the dark energy equation of state $w_{\rm X}$ which exists in the power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background. In particular, for the case with $w_{\rm X} < -1$, this degeneracy has interesting implications to a lower bound on $w_{\rm X}$ from observations. It is also discussed how this degeneracy can be removed using current observations of type Ia supernovae.
We continue the study of covariant power-counting renormalizable gravity constrained by scalar Lagrange multiplier. Lorentz symmetry breaking is investigated in such a theory in comparison with the one in ghost condensation model. Covariant power-counting renormalizable vector gravity which is invariant under $U(1)$ gauge symmetry is proposed. Several forms of vector Lagrange multiplier in this theory are discussed. It is shown that covariant scalar/vector gravity under consideration may have power-law or de Sitter accelerating cosmological solution corresponding to inflationary era. Simplest …
We consider the universe as a huge $ν_R$-sphere formed with degenerate relic neutrinos and suggest that its constant energy density play a role of an effective cosmological constant. We construct the sphere as a bubble of true vacuum in a field theory model with a spontaneously broken U(1) global symmetry, and we interpret the sphere-forming time as the transition time for recent acceleration of the universe. The coincidence problem may be regarded as naturally resolved in this model, because the relic neutrinos can make the $ν_R$-sphere at the recent past time during the matter-dominated era.
We introduce the set of constraints the wave function of the Universe has to satisfy in order to describe an Universe undergoing through the process of spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry and discuss the way this may lead to the emergence of classical spacetime.
We present a novel theory of the very early universe which addresses the traditional horizon and flatness problems of big bang cosmology and predicts a scale invariant spectrum of perturbations. Unlike inflation, this scenario requires no exponential accelerated expansion of space-time. Instead, the early universe is described by a conformal field theory minimally coupled to gravity. The conformal fields develop a time-dependent expectation value which breaks the flat space so(4,2) conformal symmetry down to so(4,1), the symmetries of de Sitter, giving perturbations a scale invariant spectrum.…
We propose a model for the universe based on Jordan algebras. The action consists of cubic terms with coefficients being the structure constants of a Jordan algebra. Coupling constants only enter the theory via symmetry breaking which also selects a physical vacuum. "Before" the symmetry breaking the universe is in a pre-geometric state where it makes no sense to talk about space or time, but time comes into existence with the symmetry breaking together with a Hamiltonian which can create space from "nothing" and in some cases can propagate the space to macroscopic size in a finite time. There…
It is shown that nonlinear terms in equations of gravitons on the background of curved space-time of the expanding Universe can solve the problem of the negative square of the effective mass formally arising in linear approximation for gravitons. Similar to well known spontaneous breaking of symmetry in Goldstone model one must take another vacuum so that nonzero vacuum expectation value of the quantized graviton field leads to change of spectrum for gravitons. There appears two graviton fields, one with the positive mass, another with the zero mass. Energy density and the density of particles…

In this work we investigate a universe filled with a fermionic field and a complex scalar field, exchanging energy through a Yukawa potential; the model encodes a symmetry breaking mechanism (on the bosonic sector). In a first case, when the mechanism is not included, the cosmological model furnishes a pure accelerated regime. In a second case, when including the symmetry breaking mechanism, we verify that the fermion and one of the bosons, of Higgs type, become massive, while the other boson is massless. Besides, the mechanism shows to be responsible for a transition from an accelerated to a …
We introduce a scenario in which the breakdown of conformal symmetry is responsible for the acceleration of universe in the matter dominant era. In this regard, we consider a self interacting scalar field non-minimally coupled to the Ricci scalar and the trace of energy-momentum tensor. For a traceless energy-momentum tensor in radiation dominant era, the coupling to matter vanishes and we are left with a conformal invariant gravitational action of Deser, where the universe may experience a decelerating phase in agreement with observations. In matter dominant era, the coupling to matter no lon…
The distance-inclination degeneracy limits gravitational-wave parameter estimation of compact binary mergers. Although the degeneracy can be partially broken by including higher-order modes or precession, these effects are suppressed in binary neutron stars. In this work, we implement a new parametrization of the tidal effects in the binary neutron-star waveform, exploiting the binary Love relations, that breaks the distance-inclination degeneracy. The binary Love relations prescribe the tidal deformability of a neutron star as a function of its source-frame mass in an equation-of-state insens…
