We consider networks for isentropic gas and prove existence of weak solutions for a large class of coupling conditions. First, we construct approximate solutions by a vector-valued BGK model with a kinetic coupling function. Introducing so-called kinetic invariant domains and using the method of compensated compactness justifies the relaxation towards the isentropic gas equations. We will prove that certain entropy flux inequalities for the kinetic coupling function remain true for the traces of the macroscopic solution. These inequalities define the macroscopic coupling condition. Our techniques are also applicable to networks with arbitrary many junctions which may possibly contain circles. We give several examples for coupling functions and prove corresponding entropy flux inequalities. We prove also new existence results for solid wall boundary conditions and pipelines with discontinuous cross-sectional area.
The concentration phenomenon of the kinetic energy, $ρ|\mathbf{u}|^2$, associated to isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations, is addressed in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n=2,3$ and the adiabatic constant $γ\in[1,\frac{n}{2}]$. Except a space-time set with Hausdorff dimension less than or equal to $Γ(n)+1$ with $$ Γ(n)=\max\left\{γ(n), n-\frac{nγ}{γ(n)+1}\right\}\quad\textrm{and}\quadγ(n)=\frac{n(n-1)-nγ}{n-γ},$$ no concentration phenomenon occurs.
We introduce new coupling conditions for isentropic flow on networks based on an artificial density at the junction. The new coupling conditions can be derived from a kinetic model by imposing a condition on energy dissipation. Existence and uniqueness of solutions to the generalized Riemann and Cauchy problem are proven. The result for the generalized Riemann problem is globally in state space. Furthermore, non-increasing energy at the junction and a maximum principle are proven. A numerical example is given in which the new conditions are the only known conditions leading to the physically c…
This paper is devoted to a rigorous derivation of the isentropic Euler-alignment system with singular communication weights $ϕ_α(x) = |x|^{-α}$ for some $α> 0$. We consider a kinetic BGK-alignment model consisting of a kinetic BGK-type equation with a singular Cucker-Smale alignment force. By taking into account a small relaxation parameter, which corresponds to the asymptotic regime of a strong effect from BGK operator, we quantitatively derive the isentropic Euler-alignment system with pressure $p(ρ) = ρ^γ$, $γ= 1 + \frac2d$ from that kinetic equation.
On the structure of entropy dissipation and regularity for quasi-entropy solutions to 1d scalar conservation laws and to isentropic Euler system with $γ=3$
We are concerned with the isothermal limit of entropy solutions in $L^\infty$, containing the vacuum states, of the Euler equations for isentropic gas dynamics. We prove that the entropy solutions in $L^\infty$ of the isentropic Euler equations converge strongly to the corresponding entropy solutions of the isothermal Euler equations, when the adiabatic exponent $γ\rightarrow 1$. This is achieved by combining careful entropy analysis and refined kinetic formulation with compensated compactness argument to obtain the required uniform estimates for the limit. The entropy analysis involves carefu…
In this paper, we study the regularity properties of bounded entropy solutions to the isentropic Euler equations with $γ= 3$. First, we use a blow-up technique to obtain a new trace theorem for all such solutions. Second, we use a modified De Giorgi type iteration on the kinetic formulation to show a new partial regularity result on the Riemann invariants. We are able to conclude that in fact for any bounded entropy solution $u$, the density $ρ$ is almost everywhere upper semicontinuous away from vacuum. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a nonlinear hyperbolic system, which fails …
The over-relaxation approach is an alternative to the Jin-Xin relaxation method (Jin and Xin [1]) in order to apply the equilibrium source term in a more precise way (Coulette et al. [2, 3]). This is also a key ingredient of the Lattice-Boltzmann method for achieving second order accuracy (Dellar [4]). In this work we provide an analysis of the over-relaxation kinetic scheme. We compute its equivalent equation, which is particularly useful for devising stable boundary conditions for the hidden kinetic variables.
We construct a high order discontinuous Galerkin method for solving general hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. The method is CFL-less, matrix-free, has the complexity of an explicit scheme and can be of arbitrary order in space and time. The construction is based on: (a) the representation of the system of conservation laws by a kinetic vectorial representation with a stiff relaxation term; (b) a matrix-free, CFL-less implicit discontinuous Galerkin transport solver; and (c) a stiffly accurate composition method for time integration. The method is validated on several one-dimensional tes…
We study an asymptotic analysis of a coupled system of kinetic and fluid equations. More precisely, we deal with the nonlinear Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation coupled with the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes system through a drag force in a bounded domain with the specular reflection boundary condition for the kinetic equation and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition for the fluid system. We establish a rigorous hydrodynamic limit corresponding to strong noise and local alignment force. The limiting system is a type of two-phase fluid model consisting of the isothermal Euler system and…
In this paper, we present the hydrodynamic limit of a multiscale system describing the dynamics of two populations of agents with alignment interactions and the effect of an internal variable. It consists of a kinetic equation coupled with an Euler-type equation inspired by the thermomechanical Cucker--Smale (TCS) model. We propose a novel drag force for the fluid-particle interaction reminiscent of Stokes' law. Whilst the macroscopic species is regarded as a self-organized background fluid that affects the kinetic species, the latter is assumed sparse and does not affect the macroscopic dynam…
