Polymerization and formation of crosslinked polymer networks are important processes in manufacturing, materials fabrication, and in the case of hydrated polymer networks, synthesis of biomedical materials, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. While considerable research has been devoted to the modeling of polymer networks to determine averaged, mean-field, global properties, there are fewer studies that specifically examine the variance of the composition across "micro-regions" (composed of a large, but finite, number of polymer network strands) within the larger polymer network. Here, we mathematically model the stochastic formation of polymer networks comprised of linear homobifunctional network strands that undergo an end-linking gelation process. We introduce a master equation that describes the evolution of the probabilities of possible network micro-region configurations as a function of time and extent of reaction. We specifically focus on the dynamics of network formation and the statistical variability of the gel micro-regions, particularly at intermediate extents of reaction. We also consider possible annealing effects and study how cooperative binding between the two end-groups on a single network-strand affects network formation. Our results allow for a more detailed and thorough understanding of polymer network dynamics and variability of network properties.
Polymer models are used to describe chromatin, which can be folded at different spatial scales by binding molecules. By folding, chromatin generates loops of various sizes. We present here a randomly cross-linked (RCL) polymer model, where monomer pairs are connected randomly. We obtain asymptotic formulas for the steady-state variance, encounter probability, the radius of gyration, instantaneous displacement and the mean first encounter time between any two monomers. The analytical results are confirmed by Brownian simulations. Finally, the present results can be used to extract the minimum n…
Starting from a microscopic model of randomly cross-linked particles with quenched disorder, we calculate the Laudau-Wilson free energy S for arbitrary cross-link densities. Considering pure shear deformations, S takes the form of the elastic energy of an isotropic amorphous solid state, from which the shear modulus can be identified. It is found to be an universal quantity, not depending on any microscopic length-scales of the model.
We investigate the behaviour of randomly cross-linked (co)polymer blends using a combination of replica theory and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. In particular, we derive the analogue of the random phase approximation for systems with quenched disorder and show how the required correlation functions can be calculated efficiently. By post-processing simulation data for homopolymer networks we are able to describe neutron scattering measurements in heterogeneous systems without resorting to microscopic detail and otherwise unphysical assumptions. We obtain structure function data wh…
Indentation is a common experimental technique to study the mechanics of polymeric materials. The main advantage of using indentation is because this provides a direct correlation between the microstructure and the small-scale mechanical response, which is otherwise difficult within the standard tensile testing. Here, majority of studies have investigated hydrogels, microgels and/or elastomers. However, a lesser investigated system is the indentation in highly cross-linked polymer (HCP) networks, where the complex network structure plays a key role in dictating their physical properties. In th…
Cells make use of semi-flexible biopolymers such as actin or intermediate filaments to control their local viscoelastic response by dynamically adjusting the concentration and type of cross-linker molecules. The microstructure of the resulting networks mainly determines their mechanical properties. It remains an important challenge to relate structural transitions to both the molecular properties of the cross-linking molecules and the mechanical response of the network. This can be achieved best by well-defined in vitro model systems in combination with microscopic techniques. Here, we show th…
Motivated by recent experiments showing nonlinear elasticity of in vitro networks of the biopolymer actin cross-linked with filamin, we present an effective medium theory of flexibly cross-linked stiff polymer networks. We model such networks by randomly oriented elastic rods connected by flexible connectors to a surrounding elastic continuum, which self-consistently represents the behavior of the rest of the network. This model yields a crossover from a linear elastic regime to a highly nonlinear elastic regime that stiffens in a way quantitatively consistent with experiment.
Inspired by experiments on the actin driven propulsion of micrometer sized beads we develop and study a minimal mechanical model of a two-dimensional network of stiff elastic filaments grown from the surface of a cylinder. Starting out from a discrete model of the network structure and of its microscopic mechanical behavior we derive a macroscopic constitutive law by homogenization techniques. We calculate the axisymmetric equilibrium state and study its linear stability depending on the microscopic mechanical properties. We find that thin networks are linearly stable, whereas thick networks a…
Short fiber reinforced polymer composites have found extensive industrial and engineering applications owing to their unique combination of low cost, relatively easy processing and superior mechanical properties compared to their parent polymers. In this study, a coarse grained (CG) model of cross linked carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced polymer matrix composites is developed. A characteristic feature of the CG model is the ability to capture the interactions between polymer chains, and nanotubes and polymer matrix. The dependence of the elastic properties of the composites on the mole fraction…
Mechanical properties are of central importance to materials sciences, in particular if they depend on external stimuli. Here we investigate the rheological response of amorphous solids, namely col- loidal glasses, to external forces. Using confocal microscopy and computer simulations, we establish a quantitative link between the macroscopic creep response and the microscopic single-particle dy- namics. We observe dynamical heterogeneities, namely regions of enhanced mobility, which remain localized in the creep regime, but grow for applied stresses leading to steady flow. These different beha…
Using video-microscopy imaging we demonstrate the existence of a short-ranged equilibrium attraction between heavy silica colloids diffusing on soft surfaces of cross-linked polymer gels. The inter-colloid potential can be tuned by changing the gel stiffness or by coating the colloids with a polymer layer. On sufficiently soft substrates, the interaction induced by the polymer matrix leads to large-scale colloidal aggregation. We correlate the in-plane interaction with a colloid-surface attraction.
Tuning the heat flow is fundamentally important for the design of advanced functional materials. Here, polymers are of particular importance because they provide different pathways for the energy transfer. More specifically, the heat flow between two covalently bonded monomers is over 100 times faster than between the two non-bonded monomers interacting via van der Waals (vdW) forces. Therefore, the delicate balance between these two contributions often provide a guiding tool for the tunability in thermal transport coefficient k of the polymeric materials. Traditionally most studies have inves…
The semiflexible F-actin network of the cytoskeleton is cross-linked by a variety of proteins including filamin, which contain Ig-domains that unfold under applied tension. We examine a simple semiflexible network model cross-linked by such unfolding linkers that captures the main mechanical features of F-actin networks cross-linked by filamin proteins and show that under sufficiently high strain the network spontaneously self-organizes so that an appreciable fraction of the filamin cross-linkers are at the threshold of domain unfolding. We propose an explanation of this organization based on …
Vegetable oil based hybrid films were developed thanks to a novel solvent- and heating- free method at the air-water interface using silylated castor oil cross-linked via a sol-gel reaction. To understand the mechanism of the hybrid film formation, the reaction kinetics was studied in detail by using complementary techniques: rheology, thermogravimetric analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. The mechanical properties of the final films were investigated by nano-indentation, whereas their structure was studied using a combination of wide-angle X-ray scattering, electron diffraction, and atomic fo…
Solutions of wormlike micelles can form cross-linked networks on microscopic length scales. The unique mechanical properties of these complex fluids are driven by the interplay between the network structure and dynamics which are investigated by plate-plate rheometry and X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy~(XPCS) nanorheology. Intensity auto-correlation functions of tracer nanoparticles~(NPs) dispersed in micelle solutions were recorded which captured both the slow structural network relaxation and the short-time dynamics of NPs trapped in the network. The results are indicative of a resonan…
In search for novel nematic materials, a laterally linked H-shaped liquid crystal dimer have been synthesized and characterized. The distinct feature of the material is a very broad temperature range (about 50 oC) of the nematic phase, which is in contrast with other reported H-dimers that show predominantly smectic phases. The material exhibits interesting textural features at the scale of nanometers (presence of smectic clusters) and at the macroscopic scales. Namely, at a certain temperature, the flat samples of the material show occurrence of domain walls. These domain walls are caused by …
Colloids that attractively bond to only a few neighbors (e.g., patchy particles) can form equilibrium gels with distinctive dynamic properties that are stable in time. Here, we use a coarse-grained model to explore the dynamics of linked networks of patchy colloids whose average valence is macroscopically, rather than microscopically, constrained. Simulation results for the model show dynamic hallmarks of equilibrium gel formation and establish that the colloid-colloid bond persistence time controls the characteristic slow relaxation of the self-intermediate scattering function. The model feat…
We examine the equilibrium fluctuation spectrum of a constituent semiflexible filament segment in a network. The effect of this cross linking is to modify the mechanical boundary conditions at the end of the filament. We consider the effect of both tensile stress in the network, and its elastic compliance. Most significantly, the network's compliance introduces a nonlinear term into the filament Hamiltonian even in the small-bending approximation. We analyze the effect of this nonlinearity upon the filament's fluctuation profile. We also find that there are three principal fluctuation regimes …
Low-density "equilibrium" gels that consist of a percolated, kinetically arrested network of colloidal particles and are resilient to aging can be fabricated by restricting the number of effective bonds that form between the colloids. Valence-restricted patchy particles have long served as one archetypal example of such materials, but equilibrium gels can also be realized through a synthetically simpler and scalable strategy that introduces a secondary linker, such as a small ditopic molecule, to mediate the bonds between the colloids. Here, we consider the case where the ditopic linker molecu…
We study theoretically a model system of a transient network of microemulsion droplets connected by telechelic polymers and explain recent experimental findings. Despite the absence of any specific interactions between either the droplets or polymer chains, we predict that as the number of polymers per drop is increased, the system undergoes a first order phase separation into a dense, highly connected phase, in equilibrium with dilute droplets, decorated by polymer loops. The phase transition is purely entropic and is driven by the interplay between the translational entropy of the drops and …
Ring, or cyclic, polymers have unique properties compared to linear polymers, due to their topologically closed structure that has no beginning or end. Experimental measurements on molecular ring polymers are challenging due to their polydispersity in molecular weight and the presence of undesired side products such as chains. Here, we study an experimental model system for cyclic polymers, that consists of rings of flexibly-linked micron-sized colloids with $n$=4..8 segments. We characterize the conformations of these flexible colloidal rings and find that they are freely-jointed up to steric…
We present an extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulation study of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) based densely cross-linked polymers, focussing on structural properties as well as the systems dynamics in the presence of lithium salt. Motivated by experimental findings for networks with short PEO strands we employ a combination of LiTFSI (Lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide) and LiDFOB (Lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate). Recently, it has been shown that such multi-salt systems outperform classical single salt systems (Shaji et al., Energy Storage Materials, 2022, 44, 263). To analyse the mi…
Motivated by the structure of networks of cross-linked cytoskeletal biopolymers, we study the orientationally ordered phases in two-dimensional networks of randomly cross-linked semiflexible polymers. We consider permanent cross-links which prescribe a finite angle and treat them as quenched disorder in a semi-microscopic replica field theory. Starting from a fluid of un-cross-linked polymers and small polymer clusters (sol) and increasing the cross-link density, a continuous gelation transition occurs. In the resulting gel, the semiflexible chains either display long range orientational order…
In this work a new strategy is proposed in order to build analytic and microscopic models of fluctuating polymer rings subjected to topological constraints. The topological invariants used to fix these constraints belong to a wide class of the so-called numerical topological invariants. For each invariant it is possible to derive a field theory that describes the statistical behavior of knotted and linked polymer rings following a straightforward algorithm. The treatment is not limited to the partition function of the system, but it allows also to express the expectation values of general obse…
