Primitive chain network simulations for randomly cross-linked slip-link networks were performed. For the percolated networks, the stress-strain relationship was compared to the theories by Ball et al. [Polymer, 22, 1010 (1981)] and Rubinstein and Panyukov [Macromolecules, 35, 6670 (2002)]. The simulation results were reasonably reproduced by both theories, given that the contributions from cross-links and slip-links were used as fitting parameters. However, these parameters were model dependent. Besides, the theories cannot describe the simulation results if the parameters were determined from the number of active links involved in the percolated networks. These results reveal that the fitting of experimental data to the theories does not provide a fraction of entanglements in the system unless the network only consists of Gaussian strands and it correctly reaches the state of free-energy minimum.
Self-organisation into spatially modulated structures has different nature from phase transition into uniform states. Skyrmions and half-skyrmions (merons) are representatives of such structures and are utilised in designing magnetoelectric, optical, and mechanoresponsive materials by controlling topological phases. However, skyrmions and half-skyrmions in molecular solids are rarely studied, though there is a universality in theoretical descriptions between magnetic and molecular systems with chiral interactions. Here we develop a simple physical system for controlling topological phases in a…
Colloidal gels are out of equilibrium soft solids composed of attractive Brownian particles that form a space-spanning network at low volume fractions. The elastic properties of these systems result from the network microstructure, which is very sensitive to shear history. Here, we take advantage of such sensitivity to tune the viscoelastic properties of a colloidal gel made of carbon black nanoparticles. Starting from a fluidized state under an applied shear rate $\dot γ_0$, we use an abrupt flow cessation to trigger a liquid-to-solid transition. We observe that the resulting gel is all the m…
The synthetic actin network arouses great interest as bio-material due to its soft and wet nature that mimics many biological scaffolding structures. Inside the cell, the actin network is regulated by tens of actin-binding proteins (ABP's), which make for a highly complex system with several emergent behaviours. In particular, calponin is an ABP that was identified as an actin stabiliser, but whose mechanism is still poorly understood. Recent experiments using an in vitro model system of cross-linked actin with calponin and large deformation bulk rheology, found that networks with basic calpon…
Based upon the resistor analogy and using the ideal loop gas approximation(ILGA) it is shown that only pending loops reduce the modulus of an otherwise perfect network made of monodisperse strands and junctions of identical functionality. Thus, the cycle rank of the network with pending structures removed (cyclic and branched) is sufficient to characterize modulus, if the resistor analogy can be employed. It is further shown that it is impossible to incorporate finite cycles into a polymer network such that individual network strands are at equilibrium conformations while maintaining simultane…
We built randomly cross-linked model PDMS networks and used Molecular Dynamics Methods to obtain stress-strain curves. Mooney-Rivlin (MR) analysis was used to estimate the shear moduli. We applied Primitive Path analysis (PPA) and its variation, Phantom Primitive Path analysis (3PA), to estimate the entanglement and the cross-link moduli, respectively. The MR moduli estimates are in good agreement with the sum of the entanglement and the cross-link moduli, and we observe that the stress-strain data collapse to a universal form when reduced with the PPA and 3PA moduli. We studied how the MR par…
Statistical mechanics is an important tool for understanding polymer electroelasticity because the elasticity of polymers is primarily due to entropy. However, a common approach for the statistical mechanics of polymer chains, the Gaussian chain approximation, misses key physics. By considering the nonlinearities of the problem, we show a strong coupling between the deformation of a polymer chain and its dielectric response; that is, its net dipole. When chains with this coupling are cross-linked in an elastomer network and an electric field is applied, the field breaks the symmetry of the ela…
