We study the Intra-Halo Stellar Component (IHSC) of Milky Way-mass systems up to galaxy clusters in the Horizon-AGN cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We identify the IHSC using an improved phase-space galaxy finder algorithm which provides an adaptive, physically motivated and shape-independent definition of this stellar component, that can be applied to halos of arbitrary masses. We explore the IHSC mass fraction-total halo's stellar mass, $f_{M*,IHSC}-M*$, relation and the physical drivers of its scatter. We find that on average the $f_{M*,IHSC}$ increases with $M_{*,tot}$, with the scatter decreasing strongly with mass from 2 dex at $M_{*,tot}\sim10^{11}M_\odot$ to 0.3 dex at group masses. At high masses, $M_{*,tot}>10^{11.5}M_\odot$, $f_{M*,IHSC}$ increases with the number of substructures, and with the mass ratio between the central galaxy and largest satellite, at fixed $M_{*,tot}$. From mid-size groups and systems below $M_{*,tot}<10^{12}M_\odot$, we find that the central galaxy's stellar rotation-to-dispersion velocity ratio, V/σ, displays the strongest (anti)-correlation with $f_{M*,IHSC}$ at fixed $M_{*,tot}$ of all the galaxy and halo properties explored, transitioning from $f_{M*,IHSC}$<0.1% for high V/σ, to $f_{M*,IHSC}\sim5$% for low V/σ galaxies. By studying the $f_{M*,IHSC}$ temporal evolution, we find that, in the former, mergers not always take place, but if they did, they happened early (z>1), while the high $f_{M*,IHSC}$ population displays a much more active merger history. In the case of massive groups and galaxy clusters, $M_{*,tot}>10^{12}M_\odot$, a fraction $f_{M*,IHSC}\sim$10-20% is reached at $z\sim1$ and then they evolve across lines of constant $f_{M*,IHSC}$ modulo some small perturbations. Because of the limited simulation's volume, the latter is only tentative and requires a larger sample of simulated galaxy clusters to confirm.
Intracluster stars are believed to be unbound from their progenitor galaxies and diffused throughout the galaxy cluster, creating intracluster light (ICL). However, when and how these stars form are still in debate. To directly constrain the origin, one powerful method is to study clusters at the epoch when mature galaxy clusters began to appear. We report measurements of the spatial distribution, color, and quantity of diffuse intracluster stars for a massive galaxy cluster at a redshift of 1.24. This is the most distant galaxy cluster to date for which those three properties of the ICL have …
The diffuse light in clusters of galaxies, or intracluster light, has attracted a lot of attention lately due to its potential in describing the assembly history of galaxy clusters and to explain the observed growth of the brightest cluster galaxy with time. The properties of this light (color, stellar populations, extent) give clues about its formation and, consequently, the processes that shape the cluster. Here, I will present a review on intracluster light, its history, properties and the particular observational problems and limitations associated with the study of this diffuse component …
The largest stellar halos in the universe are found in massive galaxy clusters, where interactions and mergers of galaxies, along with the cluster tidal field, all act to strip stars from their host galaxies and feed the diffuse intracluster light (ICL) and extended halos of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). Studies of the nearby Virgo Cluster reveal a variety of accretion signatures imprinted in the morphology and stellar populations of its ICL. While simulations suggest the ICL should grow with time, attempts to track this evolution across clusters spanning a range of mass and redshift have…
Since the first detection of intracluster planetary nebulae in 1996, imaging and spectroscopic surveys identified such stars to trace the radial extent and the kinematics of diffuse light in clusters. This topic of research is tightly linked with the studies of galaxy formation and evolution in dense environment, as the spatial distribution and kinematics of planetary nebulae in the outermost regions of galaxies and in the cluster cores is relevant for setting constraints on cosmological simulations. In this sense, extragalactic planetary nebulae play a very important role in the near-field co…
We use recent X-ray observations of the intracluster medium (ICM) of the galaxy group NGC 5813 to confront theoretical studies of ICM thermal evolution with the newly derived ICM properties. We argue that the ICM of the cooling flow galaxy group NGC 5813 is more likely to be heated by mixing of post-shock jets' gas residing in hot bubbles with the ICM, than by shocks or turbulent-heating. Shocks thermalize only a small fraction of their energy in the inner regions of the cooling flow; in order to adequately heat the inner part of the ICM, they would overheat the outer regions by a large factor…
We present a survey of globular clusters (GCs) in the massive gravitational lens cluster SMACS J0723.3-7327 at $z=0.39$ based on the early released JWST/NIRCam images. In the color-magnitude diagrams of the point sources we find clearly a rich population of intracluster GCs that spread in a wide area of the cluster. Their ages, considering the cluster redshift, are younger than 9.5 Gyr. The F200W (AB) magnitudes of these GCs, $26.5<{F200W_0} <29.5$ mag, correspond to $-15.2<{M_{F200W}} <-12.2$ mag, showing that they belong to the brightest GCs (including ultracompact dwarfs). The spatial distr…
The study of low surface brightness light in large, deep imaging surveys is still uncharted territory as automated data reduction pipelines over-subtract or eliminate this light. Using archival data of the Abell 85 cluster of galaxies taken with Hyper Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope, we show that using careful data processing can unveil the diffuse light within the cluster, the intracluster light. We reach surface brightness limits of $μ_{g}^{limit}$(3$σ$, 10"x10") = 30.9 mag/arcsec$^2$, and $μ_{i}^{limit}$(3$σ$, 10"x10") = 29.7 mag/arcsec$^2$. We measured the radial surface brightness pro…
The origin of magnetic fields in clusters of galaxies is still a matter of debate. Observations for intracluster magnetic fields over a wide range of redshifts are crucial to constrain possible scenarios for the origin and evolution of the fields. (Differences of Faraday rotation measures (RMs) of an embedded double radio sources, i.e. a pair of lobes of mostly Fanaroff--Riley type II radio galaxies, are free from the Faraday rotation contributions from the interstellar medium inside the Milky Way and the intergalactic medium between radio galaxies and us, and hence provide a novel way to esti…
We present magnitudes and profile fits for 180 galaxies in the central field of the massive lensing cluster Abell 1689 using very deep imaging with the ACS/HST in the F814W bandpass. Previous work revealed an exceptionally large number of globular clusters (GCs) in A1689 and mapped their number density distribution. We decompose this number density map into GCs associated with individual cluster galaxies and ICGCs (intracluster globular clusters) associated with the intracluster light (ICL). In all, we measure GC specific frequencies $S_N$ for 33 cluster members and the ICL. The relation betwe…
To understand how well galaxies, gas and intracluster stars trace dark matter in and around galaxy clusters, we use the IllustrisTNG cosmological hydrodynamical simulation and compare the spatial distribution of dark matter with those of baryonic components in clusters. To quantify the global morphology of the density distribution of each component in clusters, we fit an ellipse to the density contour of each component and derive shape parameters at different radii. We find that ellipticity of dark matter is better correlated with that of galaxy mass-weighted number density, rather than with t…
Stars in globular clusters lose mass through slow stellar winds that are retained by the stellar cluster and contribute to build up a non negligible intracluster medium over time. However, all the observations so far found only a negligible amount of gas in GCs. We propose here to test different mechanisms such as ram-pressure stripping by the motion of the GC in the galactic halo medium and the inclusion of ionising sources to explain the lack of gas in GCs. We use full 3D hydrodynamical simulations taking into account stellar winds, ionising radiation, radiative heating and radiative pressur…
We present three dimensional relativistic hydrodynamical simulations of a precessing jet interacting with the intracluster medium and compare the simulated jet structure with the observed structure of the Hydra A northern jet. For the simulations, we use jet parameters obtained in the parameter space study of the first paper in this series and probe different values for the precession period and precession angle. We find that for a precession period P = 1 Myr and a precession angle = 20 degree the model reproduces i) the curvature of the jet, ii) the correct number of bright knots within 20 kp…
The distribution of chemical elements in the hot intracluster medium (ICM) retains valuable information about the enrichment and star formation histories of galaxy clusters, and on the feedback and dynamical processes driving the evolution of the cosmic baryons. In the present study we review the progresses made so far in the modelling of the ICM chemical enrichment in a cosmological context, focusing in particular on cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We will review the key aspects of embedding chemical evolution models into hydrodynamical simulations, with special attention to the cruc…
The interaction of gas-rich galaxies with the intra-cluster medium (ICM) of galaxy clusters has a remarkable impact on their evolution, mainly due to the gas loss associated with this process. In this work, we use an idealised, high-resolution simulation of a Virgo-like cluster, run with RAMSES and with dynamics reproducing that of a zoom cosmological simulation, to investigate the interaction of infalling galaxies with the ICM. We find that the tails of ram pressure stripped galaxies give rise to a population of up to more than a hundred clumps of molecular gas lurking in the cluster. The num…
A possibility of generating a population of cosmic-ray particles accelerated in supernovae typeIa (SNIa) remnants in the intracluster medium (ICM) is discussed. The presently constrained host-less SNIa rates in the clusters are found to be sufficient to fill a few hundred kpc region with cosmic-ray electrons within their typical synchrotron life-time of 100 Myr. The SNIa have already been considered potential sources of excess Fe abundance in cool-core clusters, distributed heating and turbulence in ICM. A good fraction of total radio power from mini-halos can be sourced from the SNIa energy d…
We have analized a sample of 327 clusters of galaxies spanning the range 0.06-0.70 in redshift. Strong constraints on their mean intracluster emission by dust have been obtained using maps and catalogs from the HERSCHEL HerMES project; within a radius of 5 arcmin centered in each cluster, the 95% C.L. limits obtained are 86.6, 48.2 and 30.9 mJy at the observed frequencies of 250, 350 and 500 $μ$m. From these restrictions, and assuming physical parameters typical of interstellar media in the Milky Way, we have obtained tight upper limits on the visual extinction of background galaxies due to th…
The rich galaxy cluster Abell 2204 exhibits edges in its X-ray surface brightness at $\sim 65$ and $35 {\rm~ kpc}$ west and east of its center, respectively. The presence of these edges, which were interpreted as sloshing cold fronts, implies that the intracluster medium was recently disturbed. We analyze the properties of the intracluster medium using multiple Chandra observations of Abell 2204. We find a density ratio $n_{\rm in}/n_{\rm out} = 2.05\pm0.05$ and a temperature ratio $T_{\rm out}/T_{\rm in} = 1.91\pm0.27$ (projected, or $1.87\pm0.56$ deprojected) across the western edge, and cor…
Galaxy clusters contain a diffuse stellar component outside the cluster's galaxies, which is observed as faint intracluster light (ICL). Using Gemini/GMOS-N deep imaging and multi-object spectroscopy of a massive fossil cluster at a redshift of $z=0.47$, RX J105453.3+552102 (J1054), we improve the observational constraints on the formation mechanism of the ICL. We extract the ICL surface brightness and colour profiles out to 155 kpc from the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) with a detection limit of 28.7 mag/arcsec$^2$ (1$σ$, 4.8" x 4.8"; i-band). The colour of the diffuse light is similar to th…
We present a statistically-optimal and model-independent method to extract the pressure profile of hot gas in the intracluster medium (ICM). Using the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, we constrain the mean pressure profile of the ICM by appropriately considering all primary cosmic microwave background (CMB) and instrumental noise correlations, while using the maximum resolution and sensitivity of all frequency channels. As a first application, we analyze CMB maps of WMAP 9-year data through a study of the Meta-Catalogue of X-ray detected Clusters of galaxies (MCXC). We constrain the universal…
The Fanaroff-Riley class II radio galaxy Cygnus A hosts jets which produce radio emission, X-ray cavities, cocoon shocks, and X-ray hotspots where the jet interacts with the ICM. Surrounding one hotspot is a peculiar "hole" feature which appears as a deficit in X-ray emission. We use relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of a collimated jet interacting with an inclined interface between lobe and cluster plasma to model the basic processes which may lead to such a feature. We find that the jet reflects off of the interface into a broad, turbulent flow back out into the lobe, which is dominated …
We present a detailed study of the thermodynamic properties of the intracluster medium of the only low redshift galaxy cluster to contain a highly luminous quasar, H1821+643. The cluster is a highly massive, strong cool core cluster. We find that the ICM entropy around the quasar is significantly lower than that of other similarly massive strong cool core clusters within the central 80 kpc, and that the entropy lies significantly below the extrapolated baseline entropy profile from hierarchical structure formation. By comparing the scaled temperature profile with those of other strong cool cor…
