Hyperspaces $\mathcal H(X)$ of all countable compact subsets of a metric space $X$ and $\mathcal A_n(X)$ of infinite compact subsets which have at most $n$ ($n\in\mathbb N$), or finitely many ($n=ω$) or countably many ($n=ω+1$) accumulation points are studied. By descriptive set-theoretical methods, we fully characterize them for 0-dimensional, dense-in-itself, Polish spaces and partially for $σ$-compact spaces $X$. Using the theory of absorbing sets, we get characterizations of $\mathcal H(X)$, $\mathcal A_ω(X)$ and $\mathcal A_{ω+1}(X)$ for nondegenerate connected, locally connected Polish spaces $X$ which are either locally compact or nowhere locally compact. For every $n\in\mathbb N$, we show that if $X$ is an interval or a simple closed curve, $\mathcal A_n(X)$ is homeomorphic to the linear space $c_{0}=\{(x_{i}) \in\mathbb R^ω: \lim x_{i}=0\}$ with the product topology; if $X$ is a Peano continuum and a point $p\in X$ is of order $\ge 2$, then the hyperspace $\mathcal A_1(X,\{p\})$ of all compacta with exactly one accumulation point $p$ also is homeomorphic to $c_{0}$.
Our main result states that the hyperspace of convex compact subsets of a compact convex subset $X$ in a locally convex space is an absolute retract if and only if $X$ is an absolute retract of weight $\leω_1$. It is also proved that the hyperspace of convex compact subsets of the Tychonov cube $I^{ω_1}$ is homeomorphic to $I^{ω_1}$. An analogous result is also proved for the cone over $I^{ω_1}$. Our proofs are based on analysis of maps of hyperspaces of compact convex subsets, in particular, selection theorems for such maps are proved.
We introduce the notion of compactifiable classes -- these are classes of metrizable compact spaces that can be up to homeomorphic copies ``disjointly combined'' into one metrizable compact space. This is witnessed by so-called compact composition of the class. Analogously, we consider Polishable classes and Polish compositions. The question of compactifiability or Polishability of a class is related to hyperspaces. Strongly compactifiable and strongly Polishable classes may be characterized by the existence of a corresponding family in the hyperspace of all metrizable compacta. We systematica…
In a previuos paper the author asked if there exists a one-dimensional space $X$ that is not almost zero-dimensional, such that the dimension of the hyperspace of compact subsets of $X$ is one-dimensional. In this short note we give examples of spaces $X$ that are not almost zero-dimensional such that $X$ is one-dimensional and their hyperspace of compacta of $X$ also is one-dimensional.
For a regular space $X$, the hyperspace $(CL(X), τ_{F})$ (resp., $(CL(X), τ_{V})$) is the space of all nonempty closed subsets of $X$ with the Fell topology (resp., Vietoris topology). In this paper, we give the characterization of the space $X$ such that the hyperspace $(CL(X), τ_{F})$ (resp., $(CL(X), τ_{V})$) with a countable character of closed subsets. We mainly prove that $(CL(X), τ_F)$ has a countable character on each closed subset if and only if $X$ is compact metrizable, and $(CL(X), τ_F)$ has a countable character on each compact subset if and only if $X$ is locally compact and sepa…
We prove that the homeomorphism relation between compact spaces can be continuously reduced to the homeomorphism equivalence relation between absolute retracts which strengthens and simplifies recent results of Chang and Gao, and Cieśla. It follows then that the homeomorphism relation of absolute retracts is Borel bireducible with the universal orbit equivalence relation. We also prove that the homeomorphism relation between regular continua is classifiable by countable structures and hence it is Borel bireducible with the universal orbit equivalence relation of the permutation group on a coun…
We say that two classes of topological spaces are equivalent if each member of one class has a homeomorphic copy in the other class and vice versa. Usually when the Borel complexity of a class of metrizable compacta is considered, the class is realized as the subset of the hyperspace $\mathcal{K}([0, 1]^ω)$ containing all homeomorphic copies of members of the given class. We are rather interested in the lowest possible complexity among all equivalent realizations of the given class in the hyperspace. We recall that to every analytic subset of $\mathcal{K}([0, 1]^ω)$ there exist an equivalent $…
The countable uniform power (or uniform box product) of a uniform space $X$ is a special topology on ${}^ωX$ that lies between the Tychonoff topology and the box topology. We solve an open problem posed by P. Nyikos showing that if $X$ is a compact proximal space then the countable uniform power of $X$ is also proximal (although it is not compact). By recent results of J. R. Bell and G. Gruenhage this implies that the countable uniform power of a Corson compactum is collectionwise normal, countably paracompact and Fréchet-Urysohn. We also give some results about first countability, realcompact…
Assuming that there is a stationary set in $ω_{2}$ of ordinals of countable cofinality that does not reflect, we prove that there exists a compact space which is not Corson compact and whose all continuous images of weight at most $ω_1$ are Eberlein compacta. This yields an example of a Banach space of density $ω_{2}$ which is not weakly compactly generated but all its subspaces of density $ω_{1}$ are weakly compactly generated. We also prove that under Martin's axiom countable functional tightness does not reflect in small continuous images of compacta.
We study the heredity of the classes of generalized metric spaces (for example, spaces with a $σ$-hereditarily closure-preserving $k$-network, spaces with a point-countable base, spaces with a base of countable order, spaces with a point-regular base, Nagata-spaces, $c$-semi-stratifiable spaces, $γ$-spaces, semi-metrizable spaces) to the hyperspaces of nonempty compact subsets and finite subsets with the Vietoris topology.
Let $X$ be a nondegenerate Peano unicoherent continuum. The family $CB(X)$ of proper subcontinua of $X$ with connected boundaries is a $G_δ$-subset of the hyperspace $C(X)$ of all subcontinua of $X$. If every nonempty open subset of $X$ contains an open subset homeomorphic to $\mathbb R^n$ (such space is called $π$-$n$-Euclidean) and $2\le n<\infty$, then $C(X)\setminus CB(X)$ is recognized as an $F_σ$-absorber in $C(X)$; if additionally, no one-dimensional subset separates $X$, then the family of all members of $CB(X)$ which separate $X$ is a $D_2(F_σ)$-absorber in $C(X)$, where $D_2(F_σ)$ de…
The family of all subcontinua that separate a compact connected $n$-manifold $X$ (with or without boundary), $n\ge 3$, is an $F_σ$-absorber in the hyperspace $C(X)$ of nonempty subcontinua of $X$. If $D_2(F_σ)$ is the small Borel class of spaces which are differences of two $σ$-compact sets, then the family of all $(n-1)$-dimensional continua that separate $X$ is a $D_2(F_σ)$-absorber in $C(X)$. The families of nondegenerate colocally connected or aposyndetic continua in $I^n$ and of at least two-dimensional or decomposable Kelley continua are $F_{σδ}$-absorbers in the hyperspace $C(I^n)$ for …
We show that if $C_p(X\times Z)$ is homeomorphic to $C_p(Y\times Z)$, where $Z$ is compact, and $X$ and $Y$ are of countable netweight, then $C_p(X\times M)$ is homeomorphic to $C_p(Y\times M)$ for some metric compactum $M$.
We construct a path-connected homogenous compactum with cellularity 2^omega that is not homeomorphic to any product of dyadic compacta and first countable compacta. We also prove some closure properties for classes of spaces defined by various connectifiability conditions. One application is that every infinite product of infinite topological sums of T_i spaces has a T_i pathwise connectification, where i is 1, 2, 3, or 3.5.
For a topological space $X$, let $CL(X)$ be the set of all non-empty closed subset of $X$, and denote the set $CL(X)$ with the Vietoris topology by $(CL(X), \mathbb{V})$. In this paper, we mainly discuss the hyperspace $(CL(X), \mathbb{V})$ when $X$ is an infinite countable discrete space. As an application, we first prove that the hyperspace with the Vietoris topology on an infinite countable discrete space contains a closed copy of $n$-th power of Sorgenfrey line for each $n\in\mathbb{N}$. Then we investigate the tightness of the hyperspace $(CL(X), \mathbb{V})$, and prove that the tightness…
Some new classes of compacta $K$ are considered for which $C(K)$ endowed with the pointwise topology has a countable cover by sets of small local norm--diameter.
We are dealing with the complexity of the homeomorphism equivalence relation on some classes of metrizable compacta from the viewpoint of invariant descriptive set theory. We prove that the homeomorphism equivalence relation of absolute retracts in the plane is Borel bireducible with the isomorphism equivalence relation of countable graphs. In order to stress the sharpness of this result, we prove that neither the homeomorphism relation of locally connected continua in the plane nor the homeomorphism relation of absolute retracts in $\mathbb R^3$ is Borel reducible to the isomorphism relation …
The Noetherian type of a space is the least $κ$ such that it has a base that is $κ$-like with respect to containment. Just as all known homogeneous compacta have cellularity at most $2^ω$, they satisfy similar upper bounds in terms of Noetherian type and related cardinal functions. We prove these and many other results about these cardinal functions. For example, every homogeneous dyadic compactum has Noetherian type $ω$. Assuming GCH, every point in a homogeneous compactum $X$ has a local base that is $c(X)$-like with respect to containment. If every point in a compactum has a well-quasiorder…
Motivated by results of Juhász and van Mill in [13], we define the cardinal invariant $wt(X)$, the weak tightness of a topological space $X$, and show that $|X|\leq 2^{L(X)wt(X)ψ(X)}$ for any Hausdorff space $X$ (Theorem 2.8). As $wt(X)\leq t(X)$ for any space $X$, this generalizes the well-known cardinal inequality $|X|\leq 2^{L(X)t(X)ψ(X)}$ for Hausdorff spaces (Arhangel{\cprime}skiĭ~[1],Š}apirovskiĭ}~[18]) in a new direction. Theorem 2.8 is generalized further using covers by $G_κ$-sets, where $κ$ is a cardinal, to show that if $X$ is a power homogeneous compactum with a countable cover of …
In this paper, we shall study categorial properties of the hyperspace of all nontrivial convergent sequences $\mathcal{S}_c(X)$ of a Freéch-Urysohn space $X$, this hyperspace is equipped with the Vietoris topology. We mainly prove that $\mathcal{S}_c(X)$ is meager whenever $X$ is a crowded space, as a corollary we obtain that if $\mathcal{S}_c(X)$ is Baire, the $X$ has a dense subset of isolated points. As an interesting example $\mathcal{S}_c(ω_1)$ has the Baire property, where $ω_1$ carries the order topology (this answers a question from \cite{sal-yas}). We can give more examples like this …
Given a countable transitive model $M$ for ZFC+CH, we prove that one can produce a maximal almost disjoint family in $M$ whose Vietoris Hyperspace of its Isbell-Mrówka space is pseudocompact on every Cohen extension of $M$. We also show that a classical example of $ω_1$-sized maximal almost disjoint family obtained by a forcing iteration of length $ω_1$ in a model of non CH is such that the Vietoris Hyperspace of its Isbell-Mrówka space is pseudocompact.
We solve a long standing question due to Arhangel'skii by constructing a compact space which has a $G_δ$ cover with no continuum-sized ($G_δ$)-dense subcollection. We also prove that in a countably compact weakly Lindelöf normal space of countable tightness, every $G_δ$ cover has a $\mathfrak{c}$-sized subcollection with a $G_δ$-dense union and that in a Lindelöf space with a base of multiplicity continuum, every $G_δ$ cover has a continuum sized subcover. We finally apply our results to obtain a bound on the cardinality of homogeneous spaces which refines De La Vega's celebrated theorem on th…
Let L be a countable and locally finite CW complex. Suppose that the class of all metrizable compacta of extension dimension not greater than L contains a universal element which is an absolute extensor in dimension L. Our main result shows that L is quasi-finite.

A regular topological space $X$ is defined to be a $\mathfrak P_0$-space if it has countable Pytkeev network. A network $\mathcal N$ for $X$ is called a Pytkeev network if for any point $x\in X$, neighborhood $O_x\subset X$ of $x$ and subset $A\subset X$ accumulating at a $x$ there is a set $N\in\mathcal N$ such that $N\subset O_x$ and $N\cap A$ is infinite. The class of $\mathfrak P_0$-spaces contains all metrizable separable spaces and is (properly) contained in the Michael's class of $\aleph_0$-spaces. It is closed under many topological operations: taking subspaces, countable Tychonoff pro…
We study the class of compact spaces that appear as structure spaces of separable Banach lattices. In other words, we analyze what $C(K)$ spaces appear as principal ideals of separable Banach lattices. Among other things, it is shown that every such compactum $K$ admits a strictly positive regular Borel measure of countable type that is analytic, and in the nonmetrizable case these compacta are saturated with copies of $β\mathbb N$. Some natural questions about this class are left open.
Locally compact separable metrizable spaces are characterized among all metrizable spaces as those that admit a cofinal sequence $K_1\subset K_2\subset\cdots$ of compact subsets. Their Čech cohomology is well-understood due to Petkova's short exact sequence $0\to\lim^1 H^{n-1}(K_i)\to H^n(X)\to\lim H^n(K_i)\to 0$. We study a dual class of spaces. We call a metrizable space $X$ a "coronated polyhedron" if it contains a compactum $K$ such that $X\setminus K$ is a polyhedron. These include, apart from compacta and polyhedra, spaces such as the topologist's sine curve (or the Warsaw circle) and th…
