A system is non-Hermitian when it exchanges energy with its environment and non-reciprocal when it behaves differently upon the interchange of input and response. Within the field of metamaterial research on synthetic topological matter, the skin effect describes the conspiracy of non-Hermiticity and non-reciprocity to yield extensive anomalous localization of all eigenmodes in a (quasi) one-dimensional geometry. Here, we introduce the reciprocal skin effect, which occurs in non-Hermitian but reciprocal systems in two or more dimensions: Eigenmodes with opposite longitudinal momentum exhibit opposite transverse anomalous localization. We experimentally demonstrate the reciprocal skin effect in a passive RLC circuit, suggesting convenient alternative implementations in optical, acoustic, mechanical, and related platforms. Skin mode localization brings forth potential applications in directional and polarization detectors for electromagnetic waves.
Robust boundary states epitomize how deep physics can give rise to concrete experimental signatures with technological promise. Of late, much attention has focused on two distinct mechanisms for boundary robustness - topological protection, as well as the non-Hermitian skin effect. In this work, we report the first experimental realizations of hybrid higher-order skin-topological effect, in which the skin effect selectively acts only on the topological boundary modes, not the bulk modes. Our experiments, which are performed on specially designed non-reciprocal 2D and 3D topolectrical circuit l…
We propose an electric circuit array with topologically protected uni-directional voltage modes at its boundary. Instead of external bias fields or floquet engineering, we employ negative impedance converters with current inversion (INICs) to accomplish a non-reciprocal, time-reversal symmetry broken electronic network we call topolectrical Chern circuit (TCC). The TCC features an admittance bulk gap fully tunable via the resistors used in the INICs, along with a chiral voltage boundary mode reminiscent of the Berry flux monopole present in the admittance band structure. The active circuit ele…
While chirality imbalances are forbidden in conventional lattice systems, non-Hermiticity can effectively avoid the chiral-doubling theorem to facilitate 1D chiral dynamics. Indeed, such systems support unbalanced unidirectional flows that can lead to the localization of an extensive number of states at the boundary, known as the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE). Recently, a generalized (rank-2) chirality describing a 2D robust gapless mode with dispersion $ω=k_{x}k_{y}$ has been introduced in crystalline systems. Here we demonstrate that rank-2 chirality imbalances can be established in a non…
Higher-order phases are characterized by corner or hinge modes that arise due to the interesting interplay of localization mechanisms along two or more dimensions. In this work, we introduce and construct a novel class of "hybrid" higher-order skin-topological boundary modes in non-reciprocal systems with two or more open boundaries. Their existence crucially relies on non-reciprocal pumping in addition to topological localization. Unlike usual non-Hermitian "skin" modes, they can exist in lattices with \emph{vanishing} net reciprocity due to the selective nature of non-reciprocal pumping: Whi…
The study of the laws of nature has traditionally been pursued in the limit of isolated systems, where energy is conserved. This is not always a valid approximation, however, as the inclusion of features like gain and loss, or periodic driving, qualitatively amends these laws. A contemporary frontier of meta-material research is the challenge open systems pose to the established characterization of topological matter. There, one of the most relied upon principles is the bulk-boundary correspondence (BBC), which intimately relates the properties of the surface states to the topological classifi…
One of the core concepts from the non-Hermitian skin effect is the extended complex wavevectors (CW) in the generalized Brillouin zone (GBZ), while the origin of CW remains elusive, and further experimental demonstration of GBZ is still lacking. We show that the bulk states of an open quantum system dynamically governed by the Lindblad master equation exhibit non-Bloch evolution which results in CW. Experimentally, we present temporal topolectrical circuits to serve as simulators for the dynamics of an open system. By reconstructing the correspondence between the bulk states of an open system …
A non-Hermitian system is characterized by the violation of energy conservation. As a result of unbalanced gain or loss in the forward and backward directions due to non-reciprocal couplings, the eigenmodes of such systems exhibit extreme localization, also known as non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE). This work explores unconventional scenarios where the interplay of multiple asymmetric couplings can cause the NHSE to vanish, with the admittance spectra taking identical dispersion under open boundary conditions (OBC) and periodic boundary conditions (PBC). This is unlike known non-Hermitian mode…
Knots are intricate structures that cannot be unambiguously distinguished with any single topological invariant. Momentum space knots, in particular, have been elusive due to their requisite finely tuned long-ranged hoppings. Even if constructed, probing their intricate linkages and topological "drumhead" surface states will be challenging due to the high precision needed. In this work, we overcome these practical and technical challenges with RLC circuits, transcending existing theoretical constructions which necessarily break reciprocity, by pairing nodal knots with their mirror image partne…
Topological phases of matter are conventionally characterized by the bulk-boundary correspondence in Hermitian systems: The topological invariant of the bulk in $d$ dimensions corresponds to the number of $(d-1)$-dimensional boundary states. By extension, higher-order topological insulators reveal a bulk-edge-corner correspondence, such that $n$-th order topological phases feature $(d-n)$-dimensional boundary states. The advent of non-Hermitian topological systems sheds new light on the emergence of the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) with an extensive number of boundary modes under open boun…
A prominent feature of some one-dimensional non-Hermitian systems is that all right-eigenstates of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian are localized in one end of the chain. The topological and trivial phases are distinguished by the emergence of zero-energy modes within the skin states in the presence of the chiral symmetry. Skin states are formed when the system is nonreciprocal, where it is said nonreciprocal if the absolute values of the right- and left-going hoppings amplitudes are different. Indeed, the zero-energy edge modes emerge at both edges in the topological phase of the reciprocal non-…

Non-Hermiticity from non-reciprocal hoppings has been shown recently to demonstrate the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) under open boundary conditions (OBCs). Here we study the interplay of this effect and the Anderson localization in a \textit{non-reciprocal} quasiperiodic lattice, dubbed non-reciprocal Aubry-André model, and a \textit{rescaled} transition point is exactly proved. The non-reciprocity can induce not only the NHSE, but also the asymmetry in localized states with two Lyapunov exponents for both sides. Meanwhile, this transition is also topological, characterized by a winding nu…
Non-Hermitian non-reciprocal systems are known to be extremely sensitive to boundary conditions, exhibiting diverse localizing behaviors and spectrum structures when translational invariance is locally broken, either by tuning the boundary coupling strength, or by introducing an effective boundary using impurities or defects. In this work, we consider the single impurity problem in the Hatano-Nelson model and the Su-Schreieffer-Heeger model, which can be exactly solved with the single impurity being treated as an effective boundary of the system. From our exact solutions for finite-size system…
Non-Hermitian skin effect was observed in one-dimensional systems with short-range chiral interaction. Long-range chiral interaction mediated by traveling waves also favors the accumulation of energy, but has not yet showed non-Hermitian topology. Here we find that the strong interference brought by the wave propagation is detrimental for accumulation. By suppression of interference via the damping of traveling waves, we predict the non-Hermitian skin effect of magnetic excitation in a periodic array of magnetic nanowires that are coupled chirally via spin waves of thin magnetic films. The loc…
We show that two-dimensional non-Hermitian photonic crystals made of lossy material can exhibit non-trivial point gap topology in terms of topological winding in its complex frequency band structure. Such crystals can be either made of lossy isotropic media which is reciprocal, or lossy magneto-optical media which is non-reciprocal. We discuss the effects of reciprocity on the properties of the point gap topology. We also show that such a non-trivial point gap topology leads to non-Hermitian skin effect when the photonic crystal is truncated. In contrast to most previous studies on point gap t…
Recent experiments have shown the transfer of orbital angular momentum (OAM) from a non-resonant laser onto an exciton-polariton condensate, despite earlier views that the phase information of such a laser should be lost during the process of polariton condensation. We study with a phenomenological theory the interplay of a usual angular momentum independent gain and an angular momentum preserving gain. We find that even when the latter is much smaller, it is enough to favour condensation into a given orbital angular momentum state. This further allows a breaking of symmetry in the system, whi…
Symmetry-protected spectral topology in non-Hermitian systems has interesting manifestations such as dynamically anomalous chiral currents and skin effect. We study the interplay between symmetries and disorder in a paradigmatic model for spectral topology - the non-reciprocal Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We numerically study the effect of disorder in on-site and non-reciprocal hopping terms. Using a real-space winding number, we investigate the impact of disorder on the spectral topology and the anomalous chiral modes under periodic boundary conditions. We discover a remarkable robustness of c…
We theoretically investigate possible effects of electric current on the spin wave dynamics for the Néel-type antiferromagnetic order in a honeycomb lattice. Based on a general vector decomposition of the spin polarization of conduction electrons, we find that there can exist reciprocal and nonreciprocal terms in the current-induced torque acting on the local spins in the system. Furthermore, we show that the reciprocal terms will cause the spin wave Doppler effect, while the nonreciprocal terms can induce rich non-Hermitian topological phenomena in the spin wave dynamics, including exceptiona…
We propose a realistic cold-atom quantum setting where nontrivial energy-band topology induces non-reciprocal pumping. This is an intriguing non-Hermitian phenomenon that illustrates how topology, when assisted with atom loss, can act as a "switch" for non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), rather than as a passive property that is modified by the NHSE. In particular, we present a lattice shaking scenario to realize a two-dimensional cold-atom platform, where non-reciprocity is switched on only in the presence of both atom loss and topological localization due to time-reversal symmetry breaking. Su…
We consider theoretically the dynamics of exciton-polaritons in a zigzag chain of coupled elliptical micropillars subjected to incoherent excitation. The driven-dissipative nature of the system along with the naturally present polarization splitting inside the pillars gives rise to the non-reciprocal dynamics, which eventually leads to the non-Hermitian skin effect, where all the modes of the system collapse to one edge. As a result, the polaritons propagate only in one direction along the chain, independent of the excitation position, and the propagation in the opposite direction is suppresse…

This work develops a full framework for non-Hermitian impurity physics in a non-reciprocal lattice, with PBCs, OBCs and even their interpolations being special cases across a whole range of boundary impurity strengths. As the impurity strength is tuned, the localization of steady states can assume very rich behavior, including the expected non-Hermitian skin effect, Bloch-like states albeit broken translational invariance, and surprisingly, scale-free accumulation along or even against the direction of non-reciprocity. We further uncover the possibility of the co-existence of non-Hermitian ski…
