Accurate radial velocities ($v_{\rm rad}$) of Cepheids are mandatory within the context of distance measurements via the Baade-Wesselink technique. The most common $v_{\rm rad}$ derivation method consists in cross-correlating the observed spectrum with a binary template and measuring a velocity on the resulting profile. Yet for Cepheids, the spectral lines selected within the template as well as the way of fitting the cross-correlation function (CCF) have a significant impact on the measured $v_{\rm rad}$. We detail the steps to compute consistent Cepheid CCFs and $v_{\rm rad}$, and we characterise the impact of Cepheid spectral properties and $v_{\rm rad}$ computation method on the resulting line profiles. We collected more than 3900 high-resolution spectra from seven different spectrographs of 64 classical Cepheids. These spectra were standardised through a single process on pre-defined wavelength ranges. We built six correlation templates selecting un-blended lines of different depths from a synthetic Cepheid spectrum, on three different wavelength ranges from 390 to 800 nm. Each spectrum was cross-correlated with these templates to build the corresponding CCFs. We derived a set of line profile observables as well as three different $v_{\rm rad}$ measurements from each CCF. This study confirms that both the template wavelength range, its mean line depth and width, and the $v_{\rm rad}$ computation method significantly impact the $v_{\rm rad}$. Deriving more robust Cepheid $v_{\rm rad}$ time series require to minimise the asymmetry of the line profile and its impact on the $v_{\rm rad}$. Centroid $v_{\rm rad}$, that exhibit slightly smaller amplitudes but significantly smaller scatter than Gaussian or biGaussian $v_{\rm rad}$, should thus be favoured. Stronger lines are also less asymmetric and lead to more robust $v_{\rm rad}$ than weaker lines.
I report on the recent discovery of modulation in the radial velocity curves in four classical Cepheids. This discovery may enable significant improvements in the accuracy of Baade-Wesselink distances by revealing a not previously considered systematic source of uncertainty.
The projection factor (p-factor) is an essential component of the classical Baade-Wesselink (BW) technique, that is commonly used to determine the distances to pulsating stars. It is a multiplicative parameter used to convert radial velocities into pulsational velocities. As the BW distances are linearly proportional to the p-factor, its accurate calibration for Cepheids is of critical importance for the reliability of their distance scale. We focus on the observational determination of the p-factor of the long-period Cepheid RS Pup (P = 41.5 days). This star is particularly important as this …
We present the results of an analysis of 21 spectra of alpha UMi (Polaris) obtained in September - December 2015. Frequency analysis shows an increase of the pulsation period up to 8.6 min in comparison to the 2007 observational set. The radial velocity amplitude comes to 4.16 km s^-1, and it approximately twice the one found in 2007. The average Teff = 6017 K, and it is close to the value determined for the 2001-2004 set. Therefore Polaris moves to the red edge of the Cepheid instability strip (CIS)
Spectroscopic binarity of the Cepheid variable HV914 in the Large Magellanic Cloud is pointed out from the published radial velocity observational data. The list of known binaries among Cepheid type variable stars in the Magellanic Clouds is published in tabular form. The census indicates a serious deficiency of Cepheids with known companions as compared with their Galactic counterparts, whose implications are also discussed. A particular amplitude ratio (A_{V_{rad}}/A_B) of individual Magellanic Cepheids is studied in order to select promising candidates of spectroscopic binaries worthy of th…
Recent photometric observations of first-overtone classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars have led to the discovery of additional frequencies showing a characteristic period ratio of 0.60-0.65 with the main pulsation mode. In a promising model proposed by Dziembowski (2016), these signals are suggested to be due to the excitation of non-radial modes with degrees 7, 8 and 9 (Cepheids) or 8 and 9 (RR Lyrae). Such modes usually have low amplitudes in photometric data. Spectroscopic time series offer an unexplored and promising way forward. We simulated time series of synthetic line profiles for a r…
Classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae-type stars are usually considered to be textbook examples of purely radial, strictly periodic pulsators. Not all the variables, however, conform to this simple picture. In this review I discuss different forms of multi-periodicity observed in Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars, including Blazhko effect and various types of radial and nonradial multi-mode oscillations.
We have examined high accuracy radial velocities of Cepheids to determine the binary frequency. The data are largely from the CORAVEL spectrophotometer and the Moscow version, with a typical uncertainty of $\leq1$~km~s$^{-1}$, and a time span from 1 to 20 years. A systemic velocity was obtained by removing the pulsation component using a high order Fourier series. From this data we have developed a list of stars showing no orbital velocity larger than $\pm1$~km~s$^{-1}$. The binary fraction was analyzed as a function of magnitude, and yields an apparent decrease in this fraction for fainter st…
We present a theoretical investigation of multifilter (U,B,V, I and K) light and radial velocity curves of five Classical Cepheids in NGC 1866, a young massive cluster of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The best fit models accounting for the luminosity and radial velocity variations of the five selected variables, four pulsating in the fundamental mode and one in the first overtone, provide direct estimates of their intrinsic stellar parameters and individual distances. The resulting stellar properties indicate a slightly brighter Mass Luminosity relation than the canonical one, possibly due to mi…
Classical Cepheids are useful tracers of the Galactic young stellar population because their distances and ages can be determined from their period-luminosity and period-age relations. In addition, the radial velocities and chemical abundance of the Cepheids can be derived from spectroscopic observations, providing further insights into the structure and evolution of the Galaxy. Here, we report the radial velocities of classical Cepheids near the Galactic Center, three of which were reported in 2011, the other reported for the first time. The velocities of these Cepheids suggest that the stars…
Aims: We attempt to revise the period-amplitude (P-A) relationship of Galactic Cepheids based on multi-colour photometric and radial velocity data. Reliable P-A graphs for Galactic Cepheids constructed for the U, B, V, R_C, and I_C photometric bands and pulsational radial velocity variations facilitate investigations of previously poorly studied interrelations between observable amplitudes. The effects of both binarity and metallicity on the observed amplitude, and the dichotomy between short- and long-period Cepheids can both be studied. Results: Large amplitude Cepheids with companions exhib…
The determination of pulsation velocities from observed spectra of Cepheids is needed for the Baade-Wesselink calibration of these primary distance markers. The applicability of the Fourier-disentangling technique for the determination of pulsation velocities of Cepheids and other pulsating stars is studied. The KOREL-code was modified to enable fitting of free parameters of a prescribed line-profile broadening function corresponding to the radial pulsations of the stellar atmosphere. It was applied to spectra of delta Cep in the H-alpha region observed with the Ondrejov 2-m telescope. The tel…
[Abridged] I report the discovery of modulations in radial velocity (RV) curves of four Galactic classical Cepheids and investigate their impact as a systematic uncertainty for Baade-Wesselink distances. Highly precise Doppler measurements were obtained using the Coralie high-resolution spectrograph since 2011. Particular care was taken to sample all phase points in order to very accurately trace the RV curve during multiple epochs and to search for differences in linear radius variations derived from observations obtained at different epochs. Different timescales are sampled, ranging from cyc…
This paper reports on the spectroscopic investigation of 101 Cepheids in the Carina region. These Cepheids extend previous samples by about 35% in number and increase the amount of the galactic disk coverage especially in the direction of l \approx 270°. The new Cepheids do not add much information to the radial gradient, but provide a substantial increase in azimuthal coverage. We find no azimuthal dependence in abundance over an 80° angle from the galactic center in an annulus of 1 kpc depth centered on the Sun. A simple linear fit to the Cepheid data yields a gradient d[Fe/H]/dRG = -0.055 \…
We present an analysis of spectroscopic radial velocity and photometric data of three bright Galactic Cepheids: LR Trianguli Australis (LR TrA), RZ Velorum (RZ Vel), and BG Velorum (BG Vel). Based on new radial velocity data, these Cepheids have been found to be members of spectroscopic binary systems. The ratio of the peak-to-peak radial velocity amplitude to photometric amplitude indicates the presence of a companion for LR TrA and BG Vel. IUE spectra indicate that the companions of RZ Vel and BG Vel cannot be hot stars. The analysis of all available photometric data revealed that the pulsat…
We present the analysis of photometric and spectroscopic data of two classical Cepheids, FN Aquilae and V1344 Aquilae. Based on the joint treatment of the new and earlier radial velocity data, both Galactic Cepheids have been found to be a member in a spectroscopic binary system. To match the phases of the earlier radial velocity data correctly with the new ones, we also determined the temporal behaviour of the pulsation period of these Cepheids based on all available photometric data. The O-C graph covering about half century shows slight changes in the pulsation period due to stellar evoluti…
We have analysed photometric data for the first overtone Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds from the OGLE collection. In more than 500 stars, we have detected additional variability with periods shorter than the first overtone period and period ratios in the (0.60, 0.65) range. The sample includes double periodic stars detected previously by the OGLE team as well as new discoveries. In the Petersen diagram, these stars form three well-separated sequences. In some stars, we have found simultaneously two close periodicities corresponding to two sequences in the Petersen diagram. In a significant …
We have extended the ANTARES code to simulate the coupling of pulsation with convection in Cepheid-like variables in an increasingly realistic way, in particular in multidimensions, 2D at this stage. Present days models of radially pulsating stars assume radial symmetry and have the pulsation-convection interaction included via model equations containing ad hoc closures and moreover parameters whose values are barely known. We intend to construct ever more realistic multidimensional models of Cepheids. In the present paper, the first of a series, we describe the basic numerical approach and ho…
We performed a new and accurate fit of light and radial velocity curves of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheid --OGLE-LMC-CEP-0227-- belonging to a detached double-lined eclipsing binary system. We computed several sets of nonlinear, convective models covering a broad range in stellar mass, effective temperature and in chemical composition. The comparison between theory and observations indicates that current theoretical framework accounts for luminosity --V and I band-- and radial velocity variations over the entire pulsation cycle. Predicted pulsation mass --M=4.14+-0.06 Mo-- and mean e…
We briefly summarize the BRITE observations of classical Cepheids. Possible detection of modulation in a fundamental mode Cepheid, T Vul, and of additional non-radial modes in first overtone Cepheids, DT Cyg and V1334 Cyg, are reported.
We analyse photometry of $\sim$2000 Galactic Cepheids available in the OGLE Collection of Variable Stars. We analyse both Galactic disk and Galactic bulge fields; stars classified both as single- and multi-periodic. Our goal was to search for additional low-amplitude variability. We extend the sample of multi-mode radial pulsators by identifying ten new candidates for double-mode and six new candidates for triple-mode pulsation. In the first overtone OGLE sample, we found twelve Cepheids with additional periodicity having period ratio $P_{\rm x}/P_{\rm 1O}\in (0.60,\, 0.65)$. These periodiciti…
The one-zone model of non-adiabatic radial stellar pulsations is considered. Contrary to the original Zhevakin's work the triple-alpha process is the basic thermonuclear fusion reaction within the star under investigation. The model has four dimensionless numbers. For real Cepheids, the magnitude of each of these dimensionless numbers is estimated. It is found that dimensionless numbers associated with both radiation confinement and thermonuclear energy generation are sufficiently less than 1, that is, pure hydrodynamic effects prevail in the model studied. For this case, the model system redu…
The VELOCE Modulation Zoo I. Spectroscopic detection of non-radial modes in the first-overtone Cepheids BG Crucis, QZ Normae, V0391 Normae, and V0411 Lacertae
The distances of pulsating stars, in particular Cepheids, are commonly measured using the parallax of pulsation technique. The different versions of this technique combine measurements of the linear diameter variation (from spectroscopy) and the angular diameter variation (from photometry or interferometry) amplitudes, to retrieve the distance in a quasi-geometrical way. However, the linear diameter amplitude is directly proportional to the projection factor (hereafter p-factor), which is used to convert spectroscopic radial velocities (i.e., disk integrated) into pulsating (i.e., photospheric…

Detailed knowledge of the variability of classical Cepheids, in particular their modulations and mode composition, provides crucial insight into stellar structure and pulsation. However, tiny modulations of the dominant radial-mode pulsation were recently found to be very frequent, possibly ubiquitous in Cepheids, which makes secondary modes difficult to detect and analyse, since these modulations can easily mask the potentially weak secondary modes. The aim of this study is to re-investigate the secondary mode content in the sample of OGLE-III and -IV single-mode classical Cepheids using kern…
The dynamical structure of the atmosphere of Cepheids has been well studied in the optical. Several authors have found very interesting spectral features in the J band, but little data have been secured beyond 1.6 um. However, such observations can probe different radial velocities and line asymmetry regimes, and are able to provide crucial insights into stellar physics. Our goal was to investigate the infrared line-forming region in the K-band domain, and its impact on the projection factor and the k-term of Cepheids. We secured CRIRES observations for the long-period Cepheid l Car, with a fo…
The OGLE project led to discovery of earlier unknown forms of multiperiodic pulsation in Cepheids. Often, the observed periods may be explained in terms of simultaneous excitation of two or rarely three radial modes. However, a secondary variability at about 0.6 of the dominant period, detected in a number of the first overtone (1O) pulsators inhabiting the Magellanic Clouds, seems to require a different explanation. After reviewing a possibility of explaining this signal in terms of radial and nonradial modes, I find that only unstable modes that may reproduce the observed period ratio are f-…
The cross correlation method (hereafter CC) is widely used to derive the radial velocity curve of Cepheids when the signal to noise of the spectra is low. However, if it is used with the wrong projection factor, it might introduce some biases in the Baade-Wesselink (hereafter BW) methods of determining the distance of Cepheids. In addition, it might affect the average value of the radial velocity curve (or gamma-velocity) important for Galactic structure studies. We aim to derive a period-projection factor relation (hereafter Pp) appropriate to be used together with the CC method. Moreover, we…
We analyse photometry for 138 first overtone Cepheids from the Small Magellanic Cloud, in which Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) team discovered additional variability with period shorter than first overtone period, and period ratios in the (0.60, 0.65) range. In the Petersen diagram these stars form three well separated sequences. The additional variability cannot correspond to other radial mode. This form of pulsation is still puzzling. We find that amplitude of the additional variability is small, typically 2-4 per cent of the first overtone amplitude, which corresponds to 2-…

We have obtained extensive high-quality spectroscopic observations of the OGLE-LMC-CEP-1718 eclipsing binary system in the Large Magellanic Cloud which Soszynski et al. (2008) had identified as a candidate system for containing two classical Cepheids in orbit. Our spectroscopic data clearly demonstrate binary motion of the Cepheids in a 413-day eccentric orbit, rendering this eclipsing binary system the first ever known to consist of two classical Cepheid variables. After disentangling the four different radial velocity variations in the system we present the orbital solution and the individua…
We report the results of spectropolarimetric study of the classical Cepheid $η$ Aql. We found that the longitudinal magnetic field of $η$ Aql sinusoidally varies with the radial pulsation period, while the amplitude $B$, mean field $B_0$, and phases of maximum and minimum field change from year to year. We hypothesize that possible reasons of those variations are stellar axial rotation or dynamo mechanisms.
We present a sample of the most interesting classical Cepheids selected from the OGLE collection of classical Cepheids in the Magellanic System. The main selection criterion for this sample was the presence of non-standard, unique pulsational properties. The sample contains the first known double-mode Cepheid pulsating in the second- and third-overtone modes and a large number of objects with non-radial modes excited. We also found Cepheids revealing Blazhko-like light curve modulation, objects ceasing pulsations or showing atypical shapes of their light curves. Additionally, the status of sev…
Radial abundance gradients provide sound constraints for chemo-dynamical models of galaxies. Azimuthal variations of abundance ratios are solid diagnostics to understand their chemical enrichment. In this paper we investigate azimuthal variations of abundances in the Milky Way using Cepheids. We provide the detailed chemical composition (25 elements) of 105 Classical Cepheids from high-resolution SALT spectra observed by the MAGIC project. Negative abundance gradients, with abundances decreasing from the inner to the outer disc, have been reported both in the Milky Way and in external galaxies…
Classical Cepheid and RR Lyrae variables are fundamental tracers of cosmic distances and stellar evolution and pulsation. Light curve analysis and pulsation properties of these radially pulsating stars provide stringent tests for theoretical evolution and pulsation models. I discuss a detailed light curve analysis of classical Cepheid variables in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds at multiple wavelengths. The variation of light curve parameters as a function of period, wavelength and metallicity is quantified to constrain the theoretical parameters, such as, the mass-luminosity relations ob…
We have analysed Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment photometry for first overtone classical Cepheids in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds in search for additional periodicities beyond radial modes. We have used standard consecutive prewhitening technique in some cases followed by time-dependent prewhitening. We report new candidates for double-mode radial pulsations. However, majority of signals we have detected cannot be interpreted in terms of radial modes. We report 516 double-periodic stars with period ratios, $P_{\rm x}/P_{\rm 1O}$, in the range 0.60 and 0.65. We study the prope…
We investigate the radial velocity (RV) variability and spectroscopic binarity of 19 Galactic long-period ($P_{\rm{puls}} \gtrsim 10$ d) classical Cepheid variable stars whose trigonometric parallaxes are being measured using the Hubble Space Telescope and Gaia. Our primary objective is to constrain possible parallax error due to undetected orbital motion. Using $>1600$ high-precision RVs measured between 2011 and 2016, we find no indication of orbital motion on $\lesssim 5$ yr timescales for 18 Cepheids and determine upper limits on allowed configurations for a range of input orbital periods.…
A novel method of analysis of double-lined eclipsing binaries containing a radially pulsating star is presented. The combined pulsating-eclipsing light curve is built up from a purely eclipsing light curve grid created using an existing modeling tool. For every pulsation phase the instantaneous radius and surface brightness are taken into account, being calculated from the disentangled radial velocity curve of the pulsating star and from its out-of-eclipse pulsational light curve and the light ratio of the components, respectively. The best model is found using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo met…
We present a collection of classical, type II, and anomalous Cepheids detected in the OGLE fields toward the Galactic center. The sample contains 87 classical Cepheids pulsating in one, two or three radial modes, 924 type II Cepheids divided into BL Her, W Vir, peculiar W Vir, and RV Tau stars, and 20 anomalous Cepheids - first such objects found in the Galactic bulge. Additionally, we upgrade the OGLE Collection of RR Lyr stars in the Galactic bulge by adding 828 newly identified variables. For all Cepheids and RR Lyr stars, we publish time-series VI photometry obtained during the OGLE-IV pro…
The BBW method remains one of most demanded tool to derive full set of Cepheid astrophysical parameters. Surface brightness version of the BBW technique was preferentially used during last decades to calculate Cepheid radii and to improve PLC relations. Its implementation requires a priory knowledge of Cepheid reddening value. We propose a new version of the Baade--Becker--Wesselink technique, which allows one to independently determine the colour excess and the intrinsic colour of a radially pulsating star, in addition to its radius, luminosity, and distance. It is considered to be a generali…
We present the results of the chi2 minimization model fitting technique applied to optical and near-infrared photometric and radial velocity data for a sample of 9 fundamental and 3 first overtone classical Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The near- infrared photometry (JK filters) was obtained by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) public survey "VISTA near-infrared Y; J;Ks survey of the Magellanic Clouds system"(VMC). For each pulsator isoperiodic model sequences have been computed by adopting a nonlinear convective hydrodynamical code in order to reproduce the multi- filter…
We present the results of the radial velocity ($RV$) measurements of metallic lines as well as H$_α$ (H$_β$) obtained in 55 high-resolution spectra of the Cepheid $α$ UMi (Polaris Aa) in 1994-2010. While the $RV$ amplitudes of these lines are roughly equal, their mean $RV$ begin to differ essentially with growth of the Polaris Aa pulsational activity. This difference is accompanied by the H$_α$ line core asymmetries on the red side mainly (so-called knife-like profiles) and reaches 8-12 km/s in 2003 with a subsequent decrease to 1.5-2 km/s. We interpret a so unusual behaviour of the H$_α$ line…
The Pulkovo Compilation of Radial Velocities (PCRV) has been made to study the stellar kinematics in the local spiral arm. The PCRV contains weighted mean absolute radial velocities for 35 495 Hipparcos stars of various spectral types and luminosity classes over the entire celestial sphere mainly within 500 pc of the Sun. The median accuracy of the radial velocities obtained is 0.7 km s$^{-1}$. Results from 203 publications were used in the catalogue. Four of them were used to improve the radial velocities of standard stars from the IAU list. The radial velocities of 155 standard stars turned …

The characteristics of the inner Galaxy remain obscured by significant dust extinction, and hence infrared surveys are useful to find young Cepheids whose distances and ages can be accurately determined. A near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic survey was carried out and three classical Cepheids were unveiled in the inner disk, around 20 and 30 degrees in Galactic longitude. The targets feature small Galactocentric distances, 3-5 kpc, and their velocities are important as they may be under the environmental influence of the Galactic bar. While one of the Cepheids has radial velocity consi…
We present here the first spectroscopic and photometric analysis of the double-lined eclipsing binary containing the classical, first-overtone Cepheid OGLE-LMC-CEP-2532 (MACHO 81.8997.87). The system has an orbital period of 800 days and the Cepheid is pulsating with a period of 2.035 days. Using spectroscopic data from three high-class telescopes and photometry from three surveys spanning 7500 days we are able to derive the dynamical masses for both stars with an accuracy better than 3%. This makes the Cepheid in this system one of a few classical Cepheids with an accurate dynamical mass dete…
The distance to pulsating stars is classically estimated using the parallax-of-pulsation (PoP) method, which combines spectroscopic radial velocity measurements and angular diameter estimates to derive the distance of the star. An important application of this method is the determination of Cepheid distances, in view of the calibration of their distance scale. However, the conversion of radial to pulsational velocities in the PoP method relies on a poorly calibrated parameter, the projection factor (p-factor). We aim to measure empirically the value of the p-factors of a homogeneous sample of …

Four high-resolution spectra of the double-mode Cepheid V371 Per, obtained for the first time, showed the presence of the abnormally strong Li I 6707.76 A line. Our analysis of the light element abundances indicates that the star did not go through the evolutionary dredge-up stage. Large distance from the galactic plane and the low metallicity suggest that V371 Per may belong to the thick disc (or to the halo) of the Galaxy, which is consistent with its low metallicity [Fe/H]=-0.42 and the enhancement of the alpha- and s-elements relative to iron. Line splitting is observed in one of the spect…
The classical Cepheid eta Aql was not included in past Leavitt Law work (Benedict et al. 2007) because of a presumed complicating orbit due to a known B9.8V companion. To determine the orbit of eta Aql B, we analyze a significant number of radial velocity measures (RV) from eight sources. With these we establish the RV variation due to Cepheid pulsation, using a twelve Fourier coefficient model, while solving for velocity offsets required to bring the RV data sets into coincidence. RV residuals provide no evidence of orbital motion, suggesting either nearly face-on orientation or very long per…
