In this paper, we propose new accelerated update rules for rank-constrained spatial covariance model estimation, which efficiently extracts a directional target source in diffuse background noise. The naive updat e rule requires heavy computation such as matrix inversion or matrix multiplication. We resolve this problem by expanding matrix inversion to reduce computational complexity; in the parameter update step, we need neither matrix inversion nor multiplication. In an experiment, we show that the proposed accelerated update rule achieves 87 times faster calculation than the naive one.

This paper proposes a blind estimation method based on the modulation transfer function and Schroeder model for estimating reverberation time in seven-octave bands. Therefore, the speech transmission index and five room-acoustic parameters can be estimated.
Traditionally, Blind Speech Separation techniques are computationally expensive as they update the demixing matrix at every time frame index, making them impractical to use in many Real-Time applications. In this paper, a robust data-driven two-microphone sound source localization method is used as a criterion to reduce the computational complexity of the Independent Vector Analysis (IVA) Blind Speech Separation (BSS) method. IVA is used to separate convolutedly mixed speech and noise sources. The practical feasibility of the proposed method is proved by implementing it on a smartphone device …

Rank-constrained spatial covariance matrix estimation (RCSCME) is a state-of-the-art blind speech extraction method applied to cases where one directional target speech and diffuse noise are mixed. In this paper, we proposed a new algorithmic extension of RCSCME. RCSCME complements a deficient one rank of the diffuse noise spatial covariance matrix, which cannot be estimated via preprocessing such as independent low-rank matrix analysis, and estimates the source model parameters simultaneously. In the conventional RCSCME, a direction of the deficient basis is fixed in advance and only the scal…
We describe a monaural speech enhancement algorithm based on modulation-domain Kalman filtering to blindly track the time-frequency log-magnitude spectra of speech and reverberation. We propose an adaptive algorithm that performs blind joint denoising and dereverberation, while accounting for the inter-frame speech dynamics, by estimating the posterior distribution of the speech log-magnitude spectrum given the log-magnitude spectrum of the noisy reverberant speech. The Kalman filter update step models the non-linear relations between the speech, noise and reverberation log-spectra. The Kalman…

In this paper, we propose a new algorithm that efficiently separates a directional source and diffuse background noise based on independent low-rank matrix analysis (ILRMA). ILRMA is one of the state-of-the-art techniques of blind source separation (BSS) and is based on a rank-1 spatial model. Although such a model does not hold for diffuse noise, ILRMA can accurately estimate the spatial parameters of the directional source. Motivated by this fact, we utilize these estimates to restore the lost spatial basis of diffuse noise, which can be considered as an efficient full-rank spatial covarianc…
Acoustic environment characterization opens doors for sound reproduction innovations, smart EQing, speech enhancement, hearing aids, and forensics. Reverberation time, clarity, and direct-to-reverberant ratio are acoustic parameters that have been defined to describe reverberant environments. They are closely related to speech intelligibility and sound quality. As explained in the ISO3382 standard, they can be derived from a room measurement called the Room Impulse Response (RIR). However, measuring RIRs requires specific equipment and intrusive sound to be played. The recent audio combined wi…
We present a method to remove unknown convolutive noise introduced to speech by reverberations of recording environments, utilizing some amount of training speech data from the reverberant environment, and any available non-reverberant speech data. Using Fourier transform computed over long temporal windows, which ideally cover the entire room impulse response, we convert room induced convolution to additions in the log spectral domain. Next, we compute a spectral normalization vector from statistics gathered over reverberated as well as over clean speech in the log spectral domain. During ope…
This letter proposes a novel blind acoustic mask (BAM) designed to adaptively detect noise components and preserve target speech segments in time-domain. A robust standard deviation estimator is applied to the non-stationary noisy speech to identify noise masking elements. The main contribution of the proposed solution is the use of this noise statistics to derive an adaptive information to define and select samples with lower noise proportion. Thus, preserving speech intelligibility. Additionally, no information of the target speech and noise signals statistics is previously required to this …

Rank-constrained spatial covariance matrix estimation (RCSCME) is a method for the situation that the directional target speech and the diffuse noise are mixed. In conventional RCSCME, independent low-rank matrix analysis (ILRMA) is used as the preprocessing method. We propose RCSCME using independent deeply learned matrix analysis (IDLMA), which is a supervised extension of ILRMA. In this method, IDLMA requires deep neural networks (DNNs) to separate the target speech and the noise. We use Denoiser, which is a single-channel speech enhancement DNN, in IDLMA to estimate not only the target spe…
Knowing the geometrical and acoustical parameters of a room may benefit applications such as audio augmented reality, speech dereverberation or audio forensics. In this paper, we study the problem of jointly estimating the total surface area, the volume, as well as the frequency-dependent reverberation time and mean surface absorption of a room in a blind fashion, based on two-channel noisy speech recordings from multiple, unknown source-receiver positions. A novel convolutional neural network architecture leveraging both single- and inter-channel cues is proposed and trained on a large, reali…
In this paper, we present the Blind Speech Separation and Dereverberation (BSSD) network, which performs simultaneous speaker separation, dereverberation and speaker identification in a single neural network. Speaker separation is guided by a set of predefined spatial cues. Dereverberation is performed by using neural beamforming, and speaker identification is aided by embedding vectors and triplet mining. We introduce a frequency-domain model which uses complex-valued neural networks, and a time-domain variant which performs beamforming in latent space. Further, we propose a block-online mode…

When recorded in an enclosed room, a sound signal will most certainly get affected by reverberation. This not only undermines audio quality, but also poses a problem for many human-machine interaction technologies that use speech as their input. In this work, a new blind, two-stage dereverberation approach based in a generalized β-divergence as a fidelity term over a non-negative representation is proposed. The first stage consists of learning the spectral structure of the signal solely from the observed spectrogram, while the second stage is devoted to model reverberation. Both steps are take…
The complete decomposition performed by blind source separation is computationally demanding and superfluous when only the speech of one specific target speaker is desired. In this paper, we propose a computationally efficient blind speech extraction method based on a proper modification of the commonly utilized independent vector analysis algorithm, under the mild assumption that the average power of signal of interest outweighs interfering speech sources. Considering that the minimum distortion principle cannot be implemented since the full demixing matrix is not available, we also design a …

In this paper, we address the problem of blind separation of speech mixtures. We propose a new blind speech separation system, which integrates a perceptual filterbank and independent component analysis (ICA) and using kurtosis criterion. The perceptual filterbank was designed by adjusting undecimated wavelet packet decomposition (UWPD) tree in order to accord to critical band characteristics of psycho-acoustic model. Our proposed technique consists on transforming the observations signals into an adequate representation using UWPD and Kurtosis maximization criterion in a new preprocessing ste…
Reverberation, especially in large rooms, severely degrades speech recognition performance and speech intelligibility. Since direct measurement of room characteristics is usually not possible, blind estimation of reverberation-related metrics such as the reverberation time (RT) and the direct-to-reverberant energy ratio (DRR) can be valuable information to speech recognition and enhancement algorithms operating in enclosed environments. The objective of this work is to evaluate the performance of five variants of blind RT and DRR estimators based on a modulation spectrum representation of reve…

Although the conventional mask-based minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) could reduce the non-linear distortion, the residual noise level of the MVDR separated speech is still high. In this paper, we propose a spatio-temporal recurrent neural network based beamformer (RNN-BF) for target speech separation. This new beamforming framework directly learns the beamforming weights from the estimated speech and noise spatial covariance matrices. Leveraging on the temporal modeling capability of RNNs, the RNN-BF could automatically accumulate the statistics of the speech and noise covarian…

The reverberation time is one of the most important parameters used to characterize the acoustic property of an enclosure. In real-world scenarios, it is much more convenient to estimate the reverberation time blindly from recorded speech compared to the traditional acoustic measurement techniques using professional measurement instruments. However, the recorded speech is often corrupted by noise, which has a detrimental effect on the estimation accuracy of the reverberation time. To address this issue, this paper proposes a two-stage blind reverberation time estimation method based on noise-a…

In blind source separation of speech signals, the inherent imbalance in the source spectrum poses a challenge for methods that rely on single-source dominance for the estimation of the mixing matrix. We propose an algorithm based on the directional sparse filtering (DSF) framework that utilizes the Lehmer mean with learnable weights to adaptively account for source imbalance. Performance evaluation in multiple real acoustic environments show improvements in source separation compared to the baseline methods.

When a signal is recorded in an enclosed room, it typically gets affected by reverberation. This degradation represents a problem when dealing with audio signals, particularly in the field of speech signal processing, such as automatic speech recognition. Although there are some approaches to deal with this issue that are quite satisfactory under certain conditions, constructing a method that works well in a general context still poses a significant challenge. In this article, we propose a method based on convolutive nonnegative matrix factorization that mixes two penalizers in order to impose…

Recently end-to-end neural audio/speech coding has shown its great potential to outperform traditional signal analysis based audio codecs. This is mostly achieved by following the VQ-VAE paradigm where blind features are learned, vector-quantized and coded. In this paper, instead of blind end-to-end learning, we propose to learn disentangled features for real-time neural speech coding. Specifically, more global-like speaker identity and local content features are learned with disentanglement to represent speech. Such a compact feature decomposition not only achieves better coding efficiency by…
Automatic measuring of speaker sincerity degree is a novel research problem in computational paralinguistics. This paper proposes covariance-based feature vectors to model speech and ensembles of support vector regressors to estimate the degree of sincerity of a speaker. The elements of each covariance vector are pairwise statistics between the short-term feature components. These features are used alone as well as in combination with the ComParE acoustic feature set. The experimental results on the development set of the Sincerity Speech Corpus using a cross-validation procedure have shown an…

This paper describes a practical dual-process speech enhancement system that adapts environment-sensitive frame-online beamforming (front-end) with help from environment-free block-online source separation (back-end). To use minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamforming, one may train a deep neural network (DNN) that estimates time-frequency masks used for computing the covariance matrices of sources (speech and noise). Backpropagation-based run-time adaptation of the DNN was proposed for dealing with the mismatched training-test conditions. Instead, one may try to directly estim…

The spatial covariance matrix has been considered to be significant for beamformers. Standing upon the intersection of traditional beamformers and deep neural networks, we propose a causal neural beamformer paradigm called Embedding and Beamforming, and two core modules are designed accordingly, namely EM and BM. For EM, instead of estimating spatial covariance matrix explicitly, the 3-D embedding tensor is learned with the network, where both spectral and spatial discriminative information can be represented. For BM, a network is directly leveraged to derive the beamforming weights so as to i…

Bayesian estimation of short-time spectral amplitude is one of the most predominant approaches for the enhancement of the noise corrupted speech. The performance of these estimators are usually significantly improved when any perceptually relevant cost function is considered. On the other hand, the recent progress in the phase-based speech signal processing have shown that the phase-only enhancement based on spectral phase estimation methods can also provide joint improvement in the perceived speech quality and intelligibility, even in low SNR conditions. In this paper, to take advantage of bo…

This paper presents a computationally efficient approach to blind source separation (BSS) of audio signals, applicable even when there are more sources than microphones (i.e., the underdetermined case). When there are as many sources as microphones (i.e., the determined case), BSS can be performed computationally efficiently by independent component analysis (ICA). Unfortunately, however, ICA is basically inapplicable to the underdetermined case. Another BSS approach using the multichannel Wiener filter (MWF) is applicable even to this case, and encompasses full-rank spatial covariance analysi…
The reverberation time (T60) and the direct-to-reverberant ratio (DRR) are commonly used to characterize room acoustic environments. Both parameters can be measured from an acoustic impulse response (AIR) or using blind estimation methods that perform estimation directly from speech. When neural networks are used for blind estimation, however, a large realistic dataset is needed, which is expensive and time consuming to collect. To address this, we propose an AIR augmentation method that can parametrically control the T60 and DRR, allowing us to expand a small dataset of real AIRs into a balan…
Most speech enhancement (SE) models learn a point estimate and do not make use of uncertainty estimation in the learning process. In this paper, we show that modeling heteroscedastic uncertainty by minimizing a multivariate Gaussian negative log-likelihood (NLL) improves SE performance at no extra cost. During training, our approach augments a model learning complex spectral mapping with a temporary submodel to predict the covariance of the enhancement error at each time-frequency bin. Due to unrestricted heteroscedastic uncertainty, the covariance introduces an undersampling effect, detriment…

The estimation of the decay rate of a signal section is an integral component of both blind and non-blind reverberation time estimation methods. Several decay rate estimators have previously been proposed, based on, e.g., linear regression and maximum-likelihood estimation. Unfortunately, most approaches are sensitive to background noise, and/or are fairly demanding in terms of computational complexity. This paper presents a low complexity decay rate estimator, robust to stationary noise, for reverberation time estimation. Simulations using artificial signals, and experiments with speech in ve…

This manuscript proposes a novel robust procedure for the extraction of a speaker of interest (SOI) from a mixture of audio sources. The estimation of the SOI is performed via independent vector extraction (IVE). Since the blind IVE cannot distinguish the target source by itself, it is guided towards the SOI via frame-wise speaker identification based on deep learning. Still, an incorrect speaker can be extracted due to guidance failings, especially when processing challenging data. To identify such cases, we propose a criterion for non-intrusively assessing the estimated speaker. It utilizes …

Blind estimation of acoustic room parameters such as the reverberation time $T_\mathrm{60}$ and the direct-to-reverberation ratio ($\mathrm{DRR}$) is still a challenging task, especially in case of blind estimation from reverberant speech signals. In this work, a novel approach is proposed for joint estimation of $T_\mathrm{60}$ and $\mathrm{DRR}$ from wideband speech in noisy conditions. 2D Gabor filters arranged in a filterbank are exploited for extracting features, which are then used as input to a multi-layer perceptron (MLP). The MLP output neurons correspond to specific pairs of $(T_\mat…
Blind acoustic parameter estimation consists in inferring the acoustic properties of an environment from recordings of unknown sound sources.
