High-energy femtosecond laser pulses in the mid-infrared (MIR) wavelength range are essential for a wide range of applications from strong-field physics to selectively pump and probe low energy excitations in condensed matter and molecular vibrations. Here we report a four stage optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier (OPCPA) which generates ultrashort pulses at a central wavelength of 3000 nm with 430 $μ$J energy per pulse at a bandwidth of 490 nm. Broadband emission of a Ti:sapphire oscillator seeds synchronously the four OPCPA stages at 800 nm and the pump line at 1030 nm. The first stage amplifies the 800 nm pulses in BBO using a non-collinear configuration. The second stage converts the wavelength to 1560 nm using difference frequency generation in BBO in a collinear geometry. The third stage amplifies this idler frequency non-collinearly in KTA. Finally, the fourth stage generates the 3000 nm radiation in a collinear configuration in LiIO$_3$ due the broad amplification bandwidth this crystal provides. We compress these pulses to 65 fs by transmission through sapphire. Quantitative calculations of the individual non-linear processes in all stages verify that our OPCPA architecture operates close to optimum efficiency at minimum absorption losses, which suggests that this particular design is very suitable for operation a high average power at multi kHz repetition rates.
We present a near-infrared optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier (OPCPA) and soft X-ray (SXR) high-harmonic generation system. The OPCPA produces few-cycle pulses at a center wavelength of 800 nm and operates at a high repetition rate of 100 kHz. It is seeded by fully programmable amplitude and phase controlled ultra-broadband pulses from a Ti:sapphire oscillator. The output from the OPCPA system was compressed to near-transform-limited 9.3-fs pulses. High-power operation up to an average power of 35 W was achieved, and a fully characterized pulse compression was recorded for a power leve…
We demonstrate a new regime for mid-infrared optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) based on achromatic quasi-phase-matching. Our mid-infrared OPCPA system is based on collinear aperiodically poled lithium niobate (APPLN) pre-amplifiers and a non-collinear PPLN power amplifier. The idler output has a bandwidth of 800 nm centered at 3.4 $μ$m. After compression, we obtain a pulse duration of 44.2 fs and a pulse energy of 21.8 $μ$J at a repetition rate of 50 kHz. We explain the wide applicability of the non-collinear QPM amplification scheme we used, including how it can enable oc…
A carrier envelope phase stable near-single cycle mid-infrared laser based on optical parametric chirped pulse amplification and hollow-core-fiber compression is demonstrated. 4 μm laser pulses with 11.8 mJ energy are delivered from a KTA based OPCPA with 100 Hz repetition rate, and compressed to be ~105 fs by a two-grating compressor with efficiency over 50%. Subsequently, the pulse spectrum is broadened by employing a krypton gas-filled hollow-core-fiber (HCF). Then, the pulse duration is further compressed to 21.5 fs through a CaF2 bulk material with energy of 2.6 mJ and stability of 0.9% R…
An optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier fully based on Yb lasers at 500 kHz is described. Passive optical-synchronization is achieved between a fiber laser-pumped white-light and a 515 nm pump produced with a 200 W picosecond Yb:YAG InnoSlab amplifier. An output power up to 19.7 W with long-term stability of 0.3% is demonstrated for wavelength tunable pulses between 680 nm and 900 nm and spectral stability of 0.2%; 16.5 W can be achieved with a bandwidth supporting 5.4 fs pulses. We demonstrate compression of 30 microjoule pulses to sub-20 fs duration with a prism compressor, suitable fo…
Lasers that generate ultra-intense light pulses are under development for experiments in high-field and high-energy-density physics, as well as for applications such as particle acceleration. Extensions to even higher powers are being considered for future investigations that can only be imagined today, such as the quantum electrodynamics of plasmas and isolated attosecond-pulse generation with solid targets. For all of these areas, it is vital to produce high-contrast pulses, so that no pre-plasma is created in the target before the arrival of the main pulse. However, noise is unavoidable in …
A simple design paradigm for making broad-band ultra-thin plasmonic absorbers is introduced. The absorber's unit cell is composed of sub-units of various sizes, resulting in nearly 100% absorbance at multiple adjacent frequencies and high absorbance over a broad frequency range. A simple theoretical model for designing broad-band absorbers is presented. It uses a single-resonance model to describe the optical response of each sub-unit and employs the series circuit model to predict the overall response. Validity of the circuit model relies on short propagation lengths of the surface plasmons.
The possibility to produce laser-induced optical transparency of the metamaterial slab through the entire negative-index frequency domain is shown above the certain intensity threshold of the control laser field.
Optical resonances spanning the Near and Short Infra-Red spectral regime were exhibited experimentally by arrays of plasmonic nano-particles with concave cross-section. The concavity of the particle was shown to be the key ingredient for enabling the broad band tunability of the resonance frequency, even for particles with dimensional aspect ratios of order unity. The atypical flexibility of setting the resonance wavelength is shown to stem from a unique interplay of local geometry with surface charge distributions.
In this paper, ultra-broad band optical signal amplification are analyzed and demonstrated by utilizing supercontinuum generation propagating over the photonic crystal fiber. The coupled nonlinear Schroodinger equation containing parametric process and stimulated Raman scattering effect was analyzed and solved to calculate the variation of signal gain with frequency. The dependence of the gain spectra on nonlinear and chromatic dispersion coefficients as well as the geometrical parameters of photonic crystal fiber are discussed. The results show that when using a pump at wavelength 1450nm and …
Design of a mid-wave IR (MWIR) broad-band fiber-based light source exploiting four-wave mixing (FWM) in a meter long suitably designed highly nonlinear (NL) chalcogenide microstructured optical fiber (MOF) is reported. This superior FWM bandwidth (BW) was obtained through precise tailoring of the fibers dispersion profile so as to realize positive quartic dispersion at the pump wavelength. We consider an Erbium (Er3+) doped continuous wave (CW) ZBLAN fiber laser emitting at 2.8 micron as the pump source with an average power of 5 W. Amplification factor as high as 25 dB is achievable in the 3 …
We present the design, fabrication and performance test of a quasi three-dimensional carpet cloak made of normal dielectric in the microwave regime. Taking advantage of a simple linear coordinate transformation we design a carpet cloak with homogeneous anisotropic medium and then practically realize the device with multilayer of alternating normal dielectric slabs based on the effective medium theory. As a proof-of-concept example, we fabricate the carpet cloak with multilayer of FR4 dielectric slabs with air spacing. The performance of the fabricated design is verified through full-wave numer…
We present ultrafast all-optical switching measurements of Si woodpile photonic band gap crystals. The crystals are spatially homogeneously excited, and probed by measuring reflectivity over an octave in frequency (including the telecom range) as a function of time. After 300 fs, the complete stop band has shifted to higher frequencies as a result of optically excited free carriers. The switched state relaxes quickly with a time constant of 18 ps. We present a quantitative analysis of switched spectra with theory for finite photonic crystals. The induced changes in refractive index are well de…
Due to strong absorption of the incident light, the media with high refractive index are considered restrictive for applications in photonic crystals (PhCs). The possibility to resolve this problem by optical saturation effectively minimizing the absorption of the PhC medium is discussed. Such approach might be promising for the significant broadening of the photonic band-gap.
We report a comprehensive study on the performance of uniform and non-uniform based subwavelength grating couplers in Silicon-on-Insulator. The two performance metrics, coupling efficiency and bandwidth enhancement and trade-offs is presented. We also present, design parameters to achieve high-efficiency and broadband operation based on the detailed study of various loss mechanisms in the grating. Based on the detailed analysis subwavelength grating coupler designs with efficiency as high as 84 % with a 1 dB bandwidth of 50 nm and 98 % with a 44 nm 1 dB bandwidth is presented.
A femtosecond frequency comb provides a vast number of equidistantly spaced narrow band laser modes that can be simultaneously tuned and frequency calibrated with 15 digits accuracy. Our Vernier spectrometer utilizes all of theses modes in a massively parallel manner to rapidly record both absorption and dispersion spectra with a sensitivity that is provided by a high finesse broad band optical resonator and a resolution that is only limited by the frequency comb line width while keeping the required setup simple.
The authors introduce a general mechanism, based on electrostatic and magnetostatic considerations, for designing three-dimensional isotopic metamaterials that possess an enhanced refractive index over an extremely large frequency range. The mechanism allows nearly independent control of effective electric permittivity and magnetic permeability without the use of resonant elements.
We have shown both experimentally and theoretically that polarization-independent broad-band absorption of electromagnetic waves by an overdense plasma, caused by surface plasmon-polaritons (SPP) excitation, can be achieved due to combination of two factors: a non-zero angle of incidence and a two-dimensional circular diffraction grating placed at a properly chosen distance in front of the plasma boundary. Direct detection of SPP has been achieved for the first time using a miniature antenna imbedded in the plasma.
We present the design, numerical simulations and experimental measurements of THz metamaterial absorbers with a broad and flat absorption top both for transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations over a wide incidence angle range. The metamaterial absorber unit cell consists of two sets of structures resonating at different but close frequencies. The overall absorption spectrum is the superposition of individual components and becomes flat at the top over a significant bandwidth. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.
We used broad-band diamond-shape antennas, whose bandwidth could cover the frequency range between the pump laser and the scattered modes, in conjunction with uniformly deposited graphene test films.
We experimentally and theoretically challenge the concept of coherent perfect absorption (CPA) as a narrow frequency resonant mechanism associated with scattering processes that respect scale-invariance. Using a microwave platform, consisting of a lossy nonlinear resonator coupled to two interrogating antennas, we show that a coherent incident excitation can trigger a self-induced perfect absorption once its intensity exceeds a critical value. Importantly, a (near) perfect absorption persists for a broad band frequency range around the nonlinear CPA condition. Its origin is traced to a quartic…

We have used a highly sensitive cavity-enhanced frequency modulation spectroscopy technique to measure different parameters of the ultraweak transitions of a${^1}{\triangle}_g{\leftarrow}$X $^3Σ^{-}_g$ $(0,0)$ band of molecular oxygen in the range 7640 cm$^{-1}$ to 7917 cm$^{-1}$. The self-broadened half-width and air-broadened half-width of the transitions have been measured for three different pressures for both $^{16}$O$_2$ and $^{18}$O$_2$. To measure the line intensity and self-broadened half-width we have used ultra pure oxygen sample and air-broadened half-width was measured with dry ai…
We analyze different factors which influence the negative refraction in solids and multi-atom molecules. We find that this negative refraction is significantly influenced by simultaneous multi-electron transitions with the same transition frequency and dipole redistribution over different eigenstates. We show that these simultaneous multi-electron transitions and enhanced transition dipole broaden the bandwidth of the negative refraction by at least one order of magnitude. This work provides additional connection between metamaterials and Mobius strips.
We present an investigation of coherent backscattering of light that is multiple scattered by a photonic crystal by using a broad-band technique. The results significantly extend on previous backscattering measurements on photonic crystals by simultaneously accessing a large frequency and angular range. Backscatter cones around the stop gap are successfully modelled with diffusion theory for a random medium. Strong variations of the apparent mean free path and the cone enhancement are observed around the stop band. The variations of the mean free path are described by a semi-empirical three-ga…
