We identify a series of topological transitions occurring in electronic spin transport when manipulating spin-guiding fields controlled by the geometric shape of mesoscopic interferometers. They manifest as distinct inversions of the interference pattern in quantum conductance experiments. We establish that Rashba square loops develop weak-(anti)localization transitions (absent in other geometries as Rashba ring loops) as an in-plane Zeeman field is applied. These transitions, boosted by non-adiabatic spin scattering, prove to have a topological interpretation in terms of winding numbers characterizing the structure of spin modes in the Bloch sphere.
Schrödinger cat states are useful for many applications, ranging from quantum information processing to high-precision measurements. In this paper we propose a conceptually new method for creating such cat states, based on photon-assisted Landau-Zener-Stückelberg interferometry in a hybrid system consisting of a qubit coupled to a photon cavity. We show that by initializing the qubit in one of its basis states, performing three consecutive sweeps of the qubit energy splitting across the 1-photon resonance, and finally projecting the qubit to the same basis state, the parity of the photon field…
We investigate the electrical switching of charge and spin transport in a topological insulator nanoconstriction in a four terminal device. The switch of the edge channels is caused by the coupling between edge states which overlap in the constriction and by the tunneling effects at the contacts and therefore can be manipulated by tuning the applied voltages on the split-gate or by geometrical etching. The switching mechanism can be conveniently studied by electron interferometry involving the measurements of the current in different configurations of the side gates, while the applied bias fro…
We perform Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg-Majorana (LZSM) spectroscopy on a system with strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI), realized as a single hole confined in a gated double quantum dot. In analogy to the electron systems, at magnetic field B=0 and high modulation frequencies we observe the photon-assisted tunneling (PAT) between dots, which smoothly evolves into the typical LZSM funnel-shaped interference pattern as the frequency is decreased. In contrast to electrons, the SOI enables an additional, efficient spin-flipping interdot tunneling channel, introducing a distinct interference pattern …
A p-n junction, an interface between two regions of a material populated with carriers of opposite charge, is a basic building block of solid state electronic devices. From the fundamental physics perspective, it often serves as a tool to reveal the unconventional transport behavior of novel materials. In this work, we show that a p-n junction made from a three dimensional topological insulator (3DTI) in a magnetic field realizes an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer with virtually perfect visibility. This is owed to the confinement of the topological Dirac fermion state to a closed two-di…
We show how a universal gate set for topological quantum computation in the Ising TQFT, the non-Abelian sector of the putative effective field theory of the $ν=5/2$ fractional quantum Hall state, can be implemented. This implementation does not require overpasses or surgery, unlike the construction of Bravyi and Kitaev, which we take as a starting point. However, it requires measurements of the topological charge around time-like loops encircling moving quasiaparticles, which require the ability to perform `tilted' interferometry measurements.
Three-dimensional topological insulator (3D TI) nanowires display various interesting magnetotransport properties that can be attributed to their spin-momentum-locked surface states such as quasiballistic transport and Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. Here, we focus on the transport properties of a 3D TI nanowire with a gated section that forms an electronic Fabry-Pérot (FP) interferometer that can be tuned to act as a surface-state filter or energy barrier. By tuning the carrier density and length of the gated section of the wire, the interference pattern can be controlled and the nanowire can bec…
We propose multi-particle interference protocols in the time-energy domain which are able to probe localized topological quasiparticles. Using a set of quantum dots tunnel-coupled to a topologically nontrivial system, the time dependence of the dot level energies defines a many-body interferometry platform which (to some extent) is similar to the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interferometer. We demonstrate that for a superconducting island harboring at least four Majorana bound states, the probability distribution of the final dot occupation numbers will exhibit a characteristic interferometric pattern…
Three manifold topology is used to analyze the effect of anyonic interferometers in which the probe anyons' path along an arm crosses itself, leading to a "twisted" or braided space-time trajectory for the probe anyons. In the case of Ising non-Abelian anyons, twisted interferometry is shown to be able to generate a topologically protected $π/8$-phase gate, which cannot be generated from quasiparticle braiding.
Interferometry of non-Abelian edge excitations is a useful tool in topological quantum computing. In this paper we present a theory of a non-Abelian edge state interferometer in a 3D topological insulator brought in proximity to an s-wave superconductor. The non-Abelian edge excitations in this system have the same statistics as in the previously studied 5/2 fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect and chiral p-wave superconductors. There are however crucial differences between the setup we consider and these systems, like the need for a converter between charged and neutral excitations and the ne…
We show how a chiral Dirac fermion (a massless electron or hole) can be converted into a pair of neutral chiral Majorana fermions (a particle equal to its own antiparticle). These two types of fermions exist on the metallic surface of a topological insulator, respectively, at a magnetic domain wall and at a magnet-superconductor interface. Interferometry of Majorana fermions is a key operation in topological quantum computation, but the detection is problematic since these particles have no charge. The Dirac-Majorana converter enables electrical detection of the interferometric signal.
We investigate electron interferometry of edge states in Topological Insulators. We show that, when inter-boundary coupling is induced at two quantum point contacts of a four terminal setup, both Fabry-Pérot-like and Aharonov-Bohm-like loop processes arise. These underlying interference effects lead to a full electrically controllable system, where the magnitude of charge and spin linear conductances can be tuned by gate voltages, without applying magnetic fields. In particular we find that, under appropriate conditions, inter-boundary coupling can lead to negative values of the conductance. F…
We describe measurement-only topological quantum computation using both projective and interferometrical measurement of topological charge. We demonstrate how anyonic teleportation can be achieved using "forced measurement" protocols for both types of measurement. Using this, it is shown how topological charge measurements can be used to generate the braiding transformations used in topological quantum computation, and hence that the physical transportation of computational anyons is unnecessary. We give a detailed discussion of the anyonics for implementation of topological quantum computatio…
The edge states of a two-dimensional topological insulator are characterized by their helicity, a very remarkable property which is related to the time-reversal symmetry and the topology of the underlying system. We theoretically investigate a Hong-Ou-Mandel like setup as a tool to probe it. Collisions of two electrons with the same spin show a Pauli dip, analogous to the one obtained in the integer quantum Hall case. Moreover, the collisions between electrons of opposite spin also lead to a dip, known as $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ dip, which is a direct consequence of the constraints imposed by time-re…
Proposals to measure non-Abelian anyons in a superconductor by quantum interference of vortices suffer from the predominantly classical dynamics of the normal core of an Abrikosov vortex. We show how to avoid this obstruction using coreless Josephson vortices, for which the quantum dynamics has been demonstrated experimentally. The interferometer is a flux qubit in a Josephson junction circuit, which can nondestructively read out a topological qubit stored in a pair of anyons --- even though the Josephson vortices themselves are not anyons. The flux qubit does not couple to intra-vortex excita…
We investigate the influence of the superconducting (S) proximity effect in the quantum Hall (QH) regime by computing the charge conductance flowing through a graphene-based QH/S/QH junction. This situation offers the exciting possibility of studying the fate of topological edge states when they experience tunneling processes through the superconductor. We predict the appearance of conductance peaks at integer values of the Landau level filling factor, as a consequence of the quantum interferences taking place at the junction, and provide a semiclassical analysis allowing for a natural interpr…
Anyonic interferometry probes the braiding phases of excitations in topologically ordered matter. This technique is well established for charged quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall effect. We propose to extend it to neutral anyons, such as Ising anyons in Kitaev magnets and quasiparticles in other neutral spin liquids. We find that the thermal current through an interferometer is sensitive to the statistics of tunneling quasiparticles. We present a systematic investigation of signatures of various Abelian and non-Abelian topological orders in Fabry-Pérot and Mach-Zehnder interferomet…
Recent theoretical studies inspired by experiments on the Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ highlight the nontrivial impact of phonons on the thermal Hall conductivity of chiral topological phases. Here we introduce mixed mesoscopic-macroscopic devices that allow refined thermal-transport probes of non-Abelian spin liquids with Ising topological order. These devices feature a quantum-coherent mesoscopic region with negligible phonon conductance, flanked by macroscopic lobes that facilitate efficient thermalization between chiral Majorana edge modes and bulk phonons. We show that our devices enable $(…
We discuss devices for detection of the topological insulator phase based on the two-path electron interference. For that purpose we consider buckled silicene for which a local energy gap can be opened by vertical electric field to close one of the paths and for which the quantum spin Hall insulator conditions are controlled by the Fermi energy. In quantum spin Hall phase the interference is absent due to the separation of the spin currents and the conductance of the devices include sharp features related to localized resonances. In the normal transport conditions the two-path interference pro…
Single electron pumping based on the topological property of Majorana fermions (MFs) is proposed. The setup consists of a quantum dot and four nano topological superconductors (TSs) connected by constriction junctions, with an additional vortex located in the loop of TSs. Operation is performed by gate voltages at constriction junctions. Simulations with Bogloliubov-de Gennes equation demonstrate successfully quantum protection during switching operation.
We examine interferometric measurements of the topological charge of (non-Abelian) anyons. The target's topological charge is measured from its effect on the interference of probe particles sent through the interferometer. We find that superpositions of distinct anyonic charges a and a' in the target decohere (exponentially in the number of probes particles used) when the probes have nontrivial monodromy with the charges that may be fused with a to give a'.
We report on the observation of cyclotron resonance induced photocurrents, excited by continuous wave terahertz radiation, in a 3D topological insulator (TI) based on an 80 nm strained HgTe film. The analysis of the photocurrent formation is supported by complimentary measurements of magneto-transport and radiation transmission. We demonstrate that the photocurrent is generated in the topologically protected surface states. Studying the resonance response in a gated sample we examined the behavior of the photocurrent, which enables us to extract the mobility and the cyclotron mass as a functio…
It was recently pointed out that Halperin's 113 topological order explains the transport experiments in the quantum Hall liquid at filling factor $ν=5/2$. The 113 order, however, cannot be easily distinguished from other likely topological orders at $ν=5/2$ such as the non-Abelian Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states and the Abelian Halperin 331 state in Fabry-Perot interferometry. We show that an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer provides a clear identification of these candidate $ν=5/2$ states. Specifically, the $I$-$V$ curve for the tunneling current through the interferometer is more asy…
A signature property of Weyl semimetals is the existence of topologically protected surface states - arcs in momentum space that connect Weyl points in the bulk. However, the presence of bulks states makes detection of surface contributions to the transport challenging. Here we present a magnetoresistance study of high-quality samples of the prototypical Weyl semimetal, TaAs. By measuring the Shubnikov de Haas effect, we reveal the presence of a two-dimensional cyclotron orbit. This orbit is quantitatively consistent with the interference of coherent quasiparticles traversing two distinct Ferm…
We experimentally simulate in a photonic setting non-Hermitian (NH) metals characterized by the topological properties of their nodal band structures. Implementing nonunitary time evolution in reciprocal space followed by interferometric measurements, we probe the complex eigenenergies of the corresponding NH Bloch Hamiltonians, and study in detail the topology of their exceptional lines (ELs), the NH counterpart of nodal lines in Hermitian systems. We focus on two distinct types of NH metals: two-dimensional systems with symmetry-protected ELs, and three-dimensional systems possessing symmetr…
We consider a finite-size topological Josephson junction formed at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator in proximity to conventional superconductors and study the impact of Cooper pair symmetries on the electron transport. We find that, due to the finite junction size, electron transport is highly tunable by the superconducting phase difference $ϕ$ across the junction. At zero frequency and $ϕ=π$, the setup exhibits vanishing local Andreev reflection and perfect normal transmission due to the interplay of finite junction size and formation of topological Andreev bound states in …
Spin-orbit interactions are known to have drastic effects on the band structure of heavy-element-based materials. Celebrated examples are the recently identified 3D and 2D topological insulators. In those systems transport takes place at surfaces or along edges, and spin-momentum locking provides protection against (non-magnetic) impurity scattering, favoring spin-polarized ballistic transport. We have used the measurement of the current phase relation of a micrometer-long single crystal bismuth nanowire connected to superconducting electrodes, to demonstrate that transport occurs ballisticall…
In the usual Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain, the topology of the energy spectrum is divided into two categories in different parameter regions. Here we study the topological and nontopological edge states induced by qubit-assisted coupling potentials in circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) lattice system modelled as a SSH chain. We find that, when the coupling potential added on only one end of the system raises to a certain extent, the strong coupling potential will induce a new topologically nontrivial phase accompanied with the appearance of a nontopological edge state in the whole param…
The continuous effort towards topological quantum devices calls for an efficient and non-invasive method to assess the conformity of components in different topological phases. Here, we show that machine learning paves the way towards non-invasive topological quality control. To do so, we use a local topological marker, able to discriminate between topological phases of one-dimensional wires. The direct observation of this marker in solid state systems is challenging, but we show that an artificial neural network can learn to approximate it from the experimentally accessible local density of s…
Quantum matter with exotic topological order has potential applications in quantum computation. However, in present experiments, the manipulations on topological states are still challenging. We here propose an architecture for optical control of topological matter. We consider a topological superconducting qubit array with Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian which couples to a microwave cavity. Based on parity properties of the topological qubit array, we propose an optical spectroscopy method to observe topological phase transition, i.e., edge-to-bulk transition. This new method can be ac…
Stimulated by a very recent experiment observing successfully two superconducting states with even- and odd-number of electrons in a nanowire topological superconductor as expected from the existence of two end Majorana quasiparticles (MQs) [Albrecht \textit{et al.}, Nature \textbf{531}, 206 (2016)], we propose a way to manipulate Majorana qubit exploiting quantum tunneling effects. The prototype setup consists of two one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductors coupled by a tunneling junction which can be controlled by gate voltage. We show that, upon current injection, the time evolution…
Electron spins in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) can be manipulated by spin-orbit (SO) fields originating from either Rashba or Dresselhaus interactions with independent isotropic characteristics. Together, though, they produce anisotropic SO fields with consequences on quantum transport through spin interference. Here we study the transport properties of modelled mesoscopic rings subject to Rashba and Dresselhaus [001] SO couplings in the presence of an additional in-plane Zeeman field acting as a probe. By means of 1D and 2D quantum transport simulations we show that this setting pres…
We propose a realization of the lattice symmetry assisted second order topological superconductors with corner Majorana zero modes (MZM) based on two-dimensional topological insulators (2DTI). The lattice symmetry can naturally lead to the anisotropic coupling of edge states along different directions to the in-plane magnetic field and conventional s-wave pairings, thus leading to a single MZM locating at the corners for various lattice patterns. In particular, we focus on the 2DTI with D$_{3d}$ lattice symmetry and found different types of gap opening for the edge states along the armchair an…

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected excitations of the magnetization vector field with promising applications in spintronics and spin-caloritronics, particularly due to their high mobility. Skyrmions can be steered by a spin-polarized charge current or by exposure to a magnonic spin current. Here, we propose a further method for driving skyrmions by applying an inhomogeneous electric field and a homogeneous thermal bias. We show that the inhomogeneous electric torque leads to an efficient skyrmionic drag which can be thermally assisted as to enhance the skyrmion velocity. The calcul…
The nonlocal nature of the fermionic mode spanned by a pair of Majorana bound states in a one-dimensional topological superconductor has inspired many proposals aiming at demonstrating this property in transport. In particular, transport through the mode from a lead attached to the left bound state to a lead attached to the right will result in current cross-correlations. For ideal zero modes on a grounded superconductor, the cross-correlations are however completely suppressed in favor of purely local Andreev reflection. In order to obtain a non-vanishing cross-correlation, previous studies h…
The scientific interest in two-dimensional topological insulators (2D TIs) is currently shifting from a more fundamental perspective to the exploration and design of novel functionalities. Key concepts for the use of 2D TIs in spintronics are based on the topological protection and spin-momentum locking of their helical edge states. In this study we present experimental evidence that topological protection can be (partially) lifted by pairwise coupling of 2D TI edges in close proximity. Using direct wave function mapping via scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) we compare isola…
Here we provide a picture of transport in quantum well heterostructures with a periodic driving field in terms of a probabilistic occupation of the topologically protected edge states in the system. This is done by generalizing methods from the field of photon assisted tunneling. We show that the time dependent field {\it dresses} the underlying Hamiltonian of the heterostructure and splits the system into side-bands. Each of these sidebands is occupied with a certain probability which depends on the drive frequency and strength. This leads to a reduction in the topological transport signature…
Rydberg atoms with dipole-dipole interactions provide intriguing platforms to explore exotic quantum many-body physics. Here we propose a novel scheme with laser-assisted dipole-dipole interactions to realize synthetic magnetic field for Rydberg atoms in a two-dimensional array configuration, which gives rise to the exotic bosonic topological states. In the presence of an external effective Zeeman splitting gradient, the dipole-dipole interaction between neighboring Rydberg atoms along the gradient direction is suppressed, but can be assisted when Raman lights are applied to compensate the ene…
Topological qubits based on Majorana fermions have the potential to revolutionize the emerging field of quantum computing by making information processing significantly more robust to decoherence. Nanowires (NWs) are a promising medium for hosting these kinds of qubits, though branched NWs are needed to perform qubit manipulations. Here we report gold-free templated growth of III-V NWs by molecular beam epitaxy using an approach that enables patternable and highly regular branched NW arrays on a far greater scale than what has been reported thus far. Our approach relies on the lattice-mismatch…
Applying time-periodic modulations is routinely used to control and design synthetic matter in quantum-engineered settings. In lattice systems, this approach is explored to engineer band structures with non-trivial topological properties, but also to generate exotic interaction processes. A prime example is density-assisted tunneling, by which the hopping amplitude of a particle between neighboring sites explicitly depends on their respective occupations. Here, we show how density-assisted tunneling can be tailored in view of simulating the effects of strain in synthetic graphene-type systems.…
