Superfluid $^3$He under nanoscale confinement has generated significant interest due to the rich spectrum of phases with complex order parameters that may be stabilized. Experiments have uncovered a variety of interesting phenomena, but a complete picture of superfluid $^3$He under confinement has remained elusive. Here, we present phase diagrams of superfluid $^3$He under varying degrees of uniaxial confinement, over a wide range of pressures, which elucidate the progressive stability of both the $A$-phase, as well as a growing region of stable pair density wave (PDW) state.
A rich variety of Fermi systems condense by forming bound pairs, including high temperature [1] and heavy fermion [2] superconductors, Sr2RuO4 [3], cold atomic gases [4], and superfluid 3He [5]. Some of these form exotic quantum states having non-zero orbital angular momentum. We have discovered, in the case of 3He, that anisotropic disorder, engineered from highly porous silica aerogel, stabilizes a chiral superfluid state that otherwise would not exist. Additionally, we find that the chiral axis of this state can be uniquely oriented with the application of a magnetic field perpendicular to …
In a p-wave Fermi superfluid suffering from the nonmagnetic impurity scatterings, a coefficient of a gradient term becomes divergent upon cooling. Consequences of this divergent rigidity in the stable vortices in the B phase in globally isotropic aerogel are considered where the "impurity scattering" events are brought by the aerogel structure. For a moderately strong "impurity scatterings", the superfluid transition line T_c(P) has a quantum critical point at a low but finite pressure. We find that, with decreasing T_c via the lowering of the pressure, the distance between the half cores comp…
We theoretically investigate pairing states of the spin-triplet p-wave superfluid 3He confined in narrow cylinders. The surface-induced distortion and the multiple internal degrees of freedom of the order parameter lead to the occurrence of a stripe structure along the cylinder axis in the superfluid 3He-B phase. We show that in sufficiently small cylinders with an anisotropic surface scattering, the stripe order with broken translational symmetry may be stabilized as the lowest energy state. Periodic spin-current textures caused in this inhomogeneous superfluid phase are also discussed.
The two-dimensional electron gas at the LaTiO3/SrTiO3 or LaAlO3/SrTiO3 oxide interfaces becomes superconducting when the carrier density is tuned by gating. The measured resistance and superfluid density reveal an inhomogeneous superconductivity resulting from percolation of filamentary structures of superconducting "puddles" with randomly distributed critical temperatures, embedded in a non-superconducting matrix. Following the evidence that superconductivity is related to the appearance of high-mobility carriers, we model intra-puddle superconductivity by a multi-band system within a weak co…
The Cooper-pair size (i.e., the BCS coherence length) in low-dimensional superconductors is dramatically modified by quantum-size effects. In particular, for nanowires made of conventional superconducting materials, we show that the coherence length exhibits size-dependent drops by two-three orders of magnitude and reaches values found in high-$T_c$ superconductors. This phenomenon is surprisingly similar to the well-known BCS-BEC crossover but with one important exception: it is driven by the transverse quantization of the electron spectrum rather than by the strength of the fermion-fermion i…
Recent advances in experiment and theory suggest that superfluid $^3$He under planar confinement may form a pair density wave (PDW) whereby superfluid and crystalline orders coexist. While a natural candidate for this phase is a unidirectional stripe phase predicted by Vorontsov and Sauls in 2007, recent nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of the superfluid order parameter rather suggest a two-dimensional PDW with noncollinear wavevectors, of possibly square or hexagonal symmetry. In this Letter, we present a general mechanism by which a PDW with the symmetry of a triangular lattice can be…
Superfluid 3He is an unconventional neutral superfluid in a p-wave state with three different superfluid phases each identified by a unique set of characteristic broken symmetries and non- trivial topology. Despite natural immunity of 3He from defects and impurity of any kind, it has been found that they can be artificially introduced with high porosity silica aerogel. Furthermore, it has been shown that this modified quantum liquid becomes a superfluid with remarkably sharp thermodynamic transitions from the normal state and between its various phases. They include new superfluid phases that …
In recent work it was shown that new anisotropic p-wave states of superfluid 3He can be stabilized within high porosity silica aerogel under uniform positive strain [1]. In contrast, the equilibrium phase in an unstrained aerogel, is the isotropic superfluid B-phase [2]. Here we report that this phase stability depends on the sign of the strain. For negative strain of ~20% achieved by compression, the B-phase can be made more stable than the anisotropic A-phase resulting in a tricritical point for A, B, and normal phases with a critical field of ~100 mT. From pulsed NMR measurements we identif…
We show that pairing in an ultracold Fermi gas under spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupling (SOAMC) can acquire topological characters encoded in the quantized angular degrees of freedom. The resulting topological superfluid is the angular analog of its counterpart in a one-dimensional Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling, but characterized by a Zak phase defined in the angular-momentum space. Upon tuning the SOAMC parameters, a topological phase transition occurs, which is accompanied by the closing of the quasiparticle excitation gap. Remarkably, a topological vortex state can also be stabiliz…
Microscopic variations in composition or structure can lead to nanoscale inhomogeneity in superconducting properties such as the magnetic penetration depth, but measurements of these properties are usually made on longer length scales. We solve a generalized London equation with a non-uniform penetration depth, lambda(r), obtaining an approximate solution for the disorder-averaged Meissner effect. We find that the effective penetration depth is different from the average penetration depth and is sensitive to the details of the disorder. These results indicate the need for caution when interpre…
Superfluid 3He-A in a fully characterized stretched aerogel, used in previous work [1], has been studied for parallel and perpendicular orientations of the magnetic field relative to the anisotropy axis of the aerogel. Consistently, we find that an equal spin pairing state (ESP) is stabilized down to the lowest temperature. From our pulsed NMR frequency shifts as a function of temperature and tip angle, the orientation of the orbital angular momentum l has been determined. The aerogel anisotropy introduced by uniaxial stretching tends to align l in the axial state parallel to the strain axis, …
This paper reviews the confinement-driven phase transitions, and the prediction of superfluid phases with broken time-reversal or translational symmetry in thin films. The new phases are a result of particle-hole coherent Andreev scattering processes that create quasiparticle states with energies inside the superconducting gap. These states cause profound restructuring of the low-energy spectrum in the surface region of several coherence lengths $ξ_0$ with large spatial variations of the superconducting order parameter. In confined geometry, such as slabs, films, pores, or nano-dots, with one …
In order to help detecting superfluidity, we theoretically investigate p-wave pairing superfluids in neutral Fermion atom gases confined by a three dimensimentional (3D) harmonic potential. The Ginzburg-Landau framework, which is generic for p-wave superfluids, is used to describe the order parameter spatial structure, or texture characterized by the l-vector both at rest and under rotation. The l-vector configuration is strongly contrained by the boundary condition due to a trap. It is found that the ground state textures exhibit spontaneous supercurrent at rest both cigar and pancake shape t…
We review our study of critical phenomena in superfluid $^4$He confined in nanoporous glasses. $^4$He in nanoporous media is an ideal ground to survey the quantum phase transition of bosons. In the present work, critical phenomena were examined using a newly developed hydrodynamic mechanical resonator. The critical exponent of superfluid density $ζ$ was found to be 1.0, in contrast to 0.67 in bulk $^4$He. We also demonstrate that the superfluid density is proportional to $|P - P_{\mathrm c}|^{ζ_p}$ with $ζ_p = 1$ at any finite temperatures. These are the decisive evidences for the 4D XY critic…
In Chapter 1 we start with general Landau scheme of the conservation laws for the hydrodynamics of classical liquids and superfluids. On the basis of Landau scheme we consider hydrodynamics of rotating superfluids with large number of vortices. We study different regimes of slow and fast rotations. In Chapter 4 we consider complicated and yet unresolved problem of chiral anomaly in superfluid 3He-A and present two competing approaches. The first one is based on supersymmetric hydrodynamics, another one on the formal analogy with Dirac equation in QED. In Chapters 6 and 7 we study composed ferm…
We formulate the problem of unconventional $d-$wave superconductivity, with phase fluctuations, pseudogap phenomenon, and local Cooper pairs, in terms of a synchronization problem in random, quantum dissipative, elasto-nuclear oscillator networks. The nodes of the network correspond to {\it localized, collective quadrupolar vibrations} of nuclei-like, elastic inhomogeneities embedded in a dissipative medium. Electrons interacting with such vibrations form local Cooper pairs, with a superfluid $d-$wave pseudogap $Δ_{PG}$, due to an effective, short range attractive interaction of $d_{x^2-y^2}$ …
Graphene is known to be non-superconducting. However, surprising superconductivity is recently discovered in a flat-band in a twisted bi-layer graphene. Here we show that superconductivity can be more easily realized in topological flat-bands induced by strain in graphene through periodic ripples. Specifically, it is shown that by including correlation effects, the chiral d-wave superconductivity can be stabilized under strain even for slightly doped graphene. The chiral d-wave superconductivity generally coexists with charge density waves (CDW) and pair density waves (PDW) of the same period.…
