The field of sound healing includes ancient practices coming from a broad range of cultures. Across such practices there is a variety of acoustic instrumentation utilised. Practitioners suggest that sound has the ability to target both mental and even physical health issues, e.g., chronic-stress, or joint-pain. Instruments including the Tibetan singing bowl and vocal chanting, are still widely used today. With the noise-floor of modern urban soundscapes continually increasing and known to impact wellbeing, methods to improve this are needed. With that in mind, this study presents the Acoustic Sounds for Wellbeing (ASW) dataset. The ASW dataset is a dataset gathered from YouTube including 88\,+ hrs of audio from 5-classes of acoustic instrumentation (Gongs, Drumming, Singing Bowls, and Chanting). We additionally present initial baseline classification results on the dataset, finding that conventional Mel-Frequency Cepstra coefficient features achieve at best an unweighted average recalled of 57.4 % for a 5-class support vector machine classification paradigm.
The technology development for point-of-care tests (POCTs) targeting respiratory diseases has witnessed a growing demand in the recent past. Investigating the presence of acoustic biomarkers in modalities such as cough, breathing and speech sounds, and using them for building POCTs can offer fast, contactless and inexpensive testing. In view of this, over the past year, we launched the ``Coswara'' project to collect cough, breathing and speech sound recordings via worldwide crowdsourcing. With this data, a call for development of diagnostic tools was announced in the Interspeech 2021 as a spec…
Acoustic scene classification (ASC) and sound event detection (SED) are fundamental tasks in environmental sound analysis, and many methods based on deep learning have been proposed. Considering that information on acoustic scenes and sound events helps SED and ASC mutually, some researchers have proposed a joint analysis of acoustic scenes and sound events by multitask learning (MTL). However, conventional works have not investigated in detail how acoustic scenes and sound events mutually benefit SED and ASC. We, therefore, investigate the impact of information on acoustic scenes and sound ev…
Sound event detection (SED) and acoustic scene classification (ASC) are important research topics in environmental sound analysis. Many research groups have addressed SED and ASC using neural-network-based methods, such as the convolutional neural network (CNN), recurrent neural network (RNN), and convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN). The conventional methods address SED and ASC separately even though sound events and acoustic scenes are closely related to each other. For example, in the acoustic scene "office," the sound events "mouse clicking" and "keyboard typing" are likely to occ…

We propose a simple method to measure acoustic responses using any sounds by converting them suitable for measurement. This method enables us to use music pieces for measuring acoustic conditions. It is advantageous to measure such conditions without annoying test sounds to listeners. In addition, applying the underlying idea of simultaneous measurement of multiple paths provides practically valuable features. For example, it is possible to measure deviations (temporally stable, random, and time-varying) and the impulse response while reproducing slightly modified contents under target conditi…
Considering that acoustic scenes and sound events are closely related to each other, in some previous papers, a joint analysis of acoustic scenes and sound events utilizing multitask learning (MTL)-based neural networks was proposed. In conventional methods, a strongly supervised scheme is applied to sound event detection in MTL models, which requires strong labels of sound events in model training; however, annotating strong event labels is quite time-consuming. In this paper, we thus propose a method for the joint analysis of acoustic scenes and sound events based on the MTL framework with w…

Sound event detection (SED) and acoustic scene classification (ASC) are major tasks in environmental sound analysis. Considering that sound events and scenes are closely related to each other, some works have addressed joint analyses of sound events and acoustic scenes based on multitask learning (MTL), in which the knowledge of sound events and scenes can help in estimating them mutually. The conventional MTL-based methods utilize one-hot scene labels to train the relationship between sound events and scenes; thus, the conventional methods cannot model the extent to which sound events and sce…

To improve sound quality in hearing devices, the hearing device output should be appropriately equalized. To achieve optimal individualized equalization typically requires knowledge of all transfer functions between the source, the hearing device, and the individual eardrum. However, in practice the measurement of all of these transfer functions is not feasible. This study investigates sound pressure equalization using different transfer function estimates. Specifically, an electro-acoustic model is used to predict the sound pressure at the individual eardrum, and average estimates are used to…
Acoustic scene classification (ASC) and sound event detection (SED) are major topics in environmental sound analysis. Considering that acoustic scenes and sound events are closely related to each other, the joint analysis of acoustic scenes and sound events using multitask learning (MTL)-based neural networks was proposed in some previous works. Conventional methods train MTL-based models using a linear combination of ASC and SED loss functions with constant weights. However, the performance of conventional MTL-based methods depends strongly on the weights of the ASC and SED losses, and it is …

This paper proposes new acoustic feature signatures based on the multiscale fractal dimension (MFD), which are robust against the diversity of environmental sounds, for the content-based similarity search. The diversity of sound sources and acoustic compositions is a typical feature of environmental sounds. Several acoustic features have been proposed for environmental sounds. Among them is the widely-used Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs), which describes frequency-domain features. However, in addition to these features in the frequency domain, environmental sounds have other import…

Acoustic source localization has been applied in different fields, such as aeronautics and ocean science, generally using multiple microphones array data to reconstruct the source location. However, the model-based beamforming methods fail to achieve the high-resolution of conventional beamforming maps. Deep neural networks are also appropriate to locate the sound source, but in general, these methods with complex network structures are hard to be recognized by hardware. In this paper, a novel neural network, termed the Acoustic-Net, is proposed to locate and quantify the sound source simply u…

Anomalous sound detection for machine condition monitoring has great potential in the development of Industry 4.0. However, these anomalous sounds of machines are usually unavailable in normal conditions. Therefore, the models employed have to learn acoustic representations with normal sounds for training, and detect anomalous sounds while testing. In this article, we propose a self-supervised dual-path Transformer (SSDPT) network to detect anomalous sounds in machine monitoring. The SSDPT network splits the acoustic features into segments and employs several DPT blocks for time and frequency …

In this paper, we propose a novel four-stage data augmentation approach to ResNet-Conformer based acoustic modeling for sound event localization and detection (SELD). First, we explore two spatial augmentation techniques, namely audio channel swapping (ACS) and multi-channel simulation (MCS), to deal with data sparsity in SELD. ACS and MDS focus on augmenting the limited training data with expanding direction of arrival (DOA) representations such that the acoustic models trained with the augmented data are robust to localization variations of acoustic sources. Next, time-domain mixing (TDM) an…

In this paper, we propose a new strategy for acoustic scene classification (ASC) , namely recognizing acoustic scenes through identifying distinct sound events. This differs from existing strategies, which focus on characterizing global acoustical distributions of audio or the temporal evolution of short-term audio features, without analysis down to the level of sound events. To identify distinct sound events for each scene, we formulate ASC in a multi-instance learning (MIL) framework, where each audio recording is mapped into a bag-of-instances representation. Here, instances can be seen as …
The hear-through functionality on hearing devices, which allows hearing equivalent to the open-ear while providing the possibility to modify the sound pressure at the eardrum in a desired manner, has drawn great attention from researchers in recent years. To this end, the output of the device is processed by means of an equalization filter, such that the transfer function between external sound sources and the eardrum is equivalent for the open-ear and the aided condition with the device in the ear. To achieve an ideal performance, the equalization filter design assumes the exact knowledge of …

We present a novel learning-based modal sound synthesis approach that includes a mixed vibration solver for modal analysis and an end-to-end sound radiation network for acoustic transfer. Our mixed vibration solver consists of a 3D sparse convolution network and a Locally Optimal Block Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient module (LOBPCG) for iterative optimization. Moreover, we highlight the correlation between a standard modal vibration solver and our network architecture. Our radiation network predicts the Far-Field Acoustic Transfer maps (FFAT Maps) from the surface vibration of the object. Th…
Sound event detection is a challenging task, especially for scenes with multiple simultaneous events. While event classification methods tend to be fairly accurate, event localization presents additional challenges, especially when large amounts of labeled data are not available. Task4 of the 2018 DCASE challenge presents an event detection task that requires accuracy in both segmentation and recognition of events while providing only weakly labeled training data. Supervised methods can produce accurate event labels but are limited in event segmentation when training data lacks event timestamp…
Sound event detection (SED) and Acoustic scene classification (ASC) are two widely researched audio tasks that constitute an important part of research on acoustic scene analysis. Considering shared information between sound events and acoustic scenes, performing both tasks jointly is a natural part of a complex machine listening system. In this paper, we investigate the usefulness of several spatial audio features in training a joint deep neural network (DNN) model performing SED and ASC. Experiments are performed for two different datasets containing binaural recordings and synchronous sound…
In this paper we describe approaches for discovering acoustic concepts and relations in text. The first major goal is to be able to identify text phrases which contain a notion of audibility and can be termed as a sound or an acoustic concept. We also propose a method to define an acoustic scene through a set of sound concepts. We use pattern matching and parts of speech tags to generate sound concepts from large scale text corpora. We use dependency parsing and LSTM recurrent neural network to predict a set of sound concepts for a given acoustic scene. These methods are not only helpful in cr…
We present a novel hybrid sound propagation algorithm for interactive applications. Our approach is designed for dynamic scenes and uses a neural network-based learned scattered field representation along with ray tracing to generate specular, diffuse, diffraction, and occlusion effects efficiently. We use geometric deep learning to approximate the acoustic scattering field using spherical harmonics. We use a large 3D dataset for training, and compare its accuracy with the ground truth generated using an accurate wave-based solver. The additional overhead of computing the learned scattered fie…
For centuries researchers have used sound to monitor and study wildlife. Traditionally, conservationists have identified species by ear; however, it is now common to deploy audio recording technology to monitor animal and ecosystem sounds. Animals use sound for communication, mating, navigation and territorial defence. Animal sounds provide valuable information and help conservationists to quantify biodiversity. Acoustic monitoring has grown in popularity due to the availability of diverse sensor types which include camera traps, portable acoustic sensors, passive acoustic sensors, and even sm…
The acoustic space in which a sound is created and heard plays an essential role in how that sound is perceived by affording a unique sense of \textit{presence}. Every sound we hear results from successive convolution operations intrinsic to the sound source and external factors such as microphone characteristics and room impulse responses. Typically, researchers use an excitation such as a pistol shot or balloon pop as an impulse signal with which an auralization can be created. The room "impulse" responses convolved with the signal of interest can transform the input sound into the sound pla…

In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of Acoustic Scene Classification (ASC), the task of identifying the scene of an audio recording from its acoustic signature. In particular, we firstly propose an inception-based and low footprint ASC model, referred to as the ASC baseline. The proposed ASC baseline is then compared with benchmark and high-complexity network architectures of MobileNetV1, MobileNetV2, VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50V2, ResNet152V2, DenseNet121, DenseNet201, and Xception. Next, we improve the ASC baseline by proposing a novel deep neural network architecture which leverag…

We use discrete Laplacian-based surface encoders and approximate the neighborhood of each point using a shared multi-layer perceptron. We show that our formulation is permutation invariant and present a neural network that computes the scattering function using spherical harmonics. Our …
Sound propagation encompasses various acoustic phenomena including reverberation. Current virtual acoustic methods, ranging from parametric filters to physically-accurate solvers, can simulate reverberation with varying degrees of fidelity. We investigate the effects of reverberant sounds generated using different propagation algorithms on acoustic distance perception, i.e., how faraway humans perceive a sound source. In particular, we evaluate two classes of methods for real-time sound propagation in dynamic scenes based on parametric filters and ray tracing. Our study shows that the more acc…
In this paper we present our work on Task 1 Acoustic Scene Classi- fication and Task 3 Sound Event Detection in Real Life Recordings. Among our experiments we have low-level and high-level features, classifier optimization and other heuristics specific to each task. Our performance for both tasks improved the baseline from DCASE: for Task 1 we achieved an overall accuracy of 78.9% compared to the baseline of 72.6% and for Task 3 we achieved a Segment-Based Error Rate of 0.76 compared to the baseline of 0.91.
This work presents a method for estimation of the acoustic intensity, the energy density and the associated sound field diffuseness around the origin, when the sound field is weighted with a spatial filter. The method permits energetic DOA estimation and sound field characterization focused in a specific angular region determined by the beam pattern of the spatial filter. The formulation of the estimators is presented and their behavior is analyzed for the fundamental cases useful in parametric sound field models of a single plane wave, a uniform diffuse field and a mixture of the two.

Acoustic scene classification (ASC) aims to identify the type of scene (environment) in which a given audio signal is recorded. The log-mel feature and convolutional neural network (CNN) have recently become the most popular time-frequency (TF) feature representation and classifier in ASC. An audio signal recorded in a scene may include various sounds overlapping in time and frequency. The previous study suggests that separately considering the long-duration sounds and short-duration sounds in CNN may improve ASC accuracy. This study addresses the problem of the generalization ability of acous…

One of the biggest challenges of acoustic scene classification (ASC) is to find proper features to better represent and characterize environmental sounds. Environmental sounds generally involve more sound sources while exhibiting less structure in temporal spectral representations. However, the background of an acoustic scene exhibits temporal homogeneity in acoustic properties, suggesting it could be characterized by distribution statistics rather than temporal details. In this work, we investigated using auditory summary statistics as the feature for ASC tasks. The inspiration comes from a r…

In natural auditory environments, acoustic signals originate from the temporal superimposition of different sound sources. The problem of inferring individual sources from ambiguous mixtures of sounds is known as blind source decomposition. Experiments on humans have demonstrated that the auditory system can identify sound sources as repeating patterns embedded in the acoustic input. Source repetition produces temporal regularities that can be detected and used for segregation. Specifically, listeners can identify sounds occurring more than once across different mixtures, but not sounds heard …

Human brain employs perceptual information about the head and eye movements to update the spatial relationship between the individual and the surrounding environment. Based on this cognitive process known as spatial updating, we introduce contrastive sound localization (C-SL) with mobile inertial-acoustic sensor arrays of arbitrary geometry. C-SL uses unlabeled multi-channel audio recordings and inertial measurement unit (IMU) readings collected during free rotational movements of the array to learn mappings from acoustical measurements to an array-centered direction-of-arrival (DOA) in a self…
Every sound that we hear is the result of successive convolutional operations (e.g. room acoustics, microphone characteristics, resonant properties of the instrument itself, not to mention characteristics and limitations of the sound reproduction system). In this work we seek to determine the best room in which to perform a particular piece using AI. Additionally, we use room acoustics as a way to enhance the perceptual qualities of a given sound. Historically, rooms (particularly Churches and concert halls) were designed to host and serve specific musical functions. In some cases the architec…
Acoustic scene classification is the task of identifying the scene from which the audio signal is recorded. Convolutional neural network (CNN) models are widely adopted with proven successes in acoustic scene classification. However, there is little insight on how an audio scene is perceived in CNN, as what have been demonstrated in image recognition research. In the present study, the Class Activation Mapping (CAM) is utilized to analyze how the log-magnitude Mel-scale filter-bank (log-Mel) features of different acoustic scenes are learned in a CNN classifier. It is noted that distinct high-e…

We introduce the new task of Acoustic Question Answering (AQA) to promote research in acoustic reasoning. The AQA task consists of analyzing an acoustic scene composed by a combination of elementary sounds and answering questions that relate the position and properties of these sounds. The kind of relational questions asked, require that the models perform non-trivial reasoning in order to answer correctly. Although similar problems have been extensively studied in the domain of visual reasoning, we are not aware of any previous studies addressing the problem in the acoustic domain. We propose…
