Magneto-Optic Photonic Crystals (MOPC) used in low dimension lasers whereby acting as Faraday rotators capable of 45o rotation where insertion loos is compensated by photoluminescence effect are of significant interest. In low dimension sensors MOPCs act as optical filters to selectively detect only lights at certain wavelengths. Combined with the photoluminescence effect, sensors may be designed capable of detecting signals with extremely low intensity, thus high quantum efficiency. In this work, MOPC with various Erbium dopant concentrations, acting as photoluminescence center, were modelled under high pumping power regime associated to 0.985 inversion population to identify the minimum Erbium concentration and number of layers for the target 45 degrees FR, 0.9 transmittance and minimal ellipticity at the resonance wavelength 1531nm. Further optimization of Magneto-optical (MO) properties versus the microcavity position within the MOPC was investigated. An optimum multilayered configuration and composition was identified with a reduction in both erbium concentration and total thickness compared to what was reported previously without compromising the target MO properties.
Recent developments in the field of photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) offer new opportunities for advantageous measurement of the optical parameters (refractive index, thickness, etc.) of nanostructures and enable spin-based photonics applications in the future. However, it remains a challenge to develop a tunable photonic SHE with any desired spin-dependent splitting for generation and manipulation of spin-polarized photons. Here, we demonstrate experimentally a scheme to realize the photonic SHE tunably by tailoring the space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP). It is shown that light beams…
We demonstrate experimentally that the spectral broadening of CW supercontinuum can be controlled by using photonic crystal fibers with two zero-dispersion wavelengths pumped by an Yb fiber laser at 1064 nm. The spectrum is bounded by two dispersive waves whose spectral location depends on the two zero-dispersion wavelengths of the fiber. The bandwidth of the generated spectrum and the spectral power density may thus be tailored for particular applications, such as high-resolution optical coherence tomography or optical spectroscopy.
The realization of topological edge states (TESs) in photonic systems has provided unprecedented opportunities for manipulating light in novel manners. The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model has recently gained significant attention and has been exploited in a wide range of photonic platforms to create TESs. We develop a photonic topological insulator strategy based on SSH photonic crystal nanobeam cavities. In contrast to the conventional photonic SSH schemes which are based on alternately tuned coupling strength in one-dimensional lattice, our proposal provides higher flexibility and allows ta…
In this paper, we propose a method for tailoring the absorption in a photonic crystal membrane. For that purpose, we first applied Time Domain Coupled Mode Theory to such a subwavelength membrane and demonstrated that 100% resonant absorption can be reached even for a symmetric membrane, if degenerate modes are involved. Design rules were then derived from this model in order to tune the absorption. Subsequently, Finite Difference Time Domain simulations were used as a proof of concept and carried out on a low absorbing material (extinction coefficient=10-2) with a high refractive index corres…
Arrays of photonic cavities are relevant structures for developing large-scale photonic integrated circuits and for investigating basic quantum electrodynamics phenomena, due to the photon hopping between interacting nanoresonators. Here, we investigate, by means of scanning near-field spectroscopy, numerical calculations and an analytical model, the role of different neighboring interactions that give rise to delocalized supermodes in different photonic crystal array configurations. The systems under investigation consist of three nominally identical two-dimensional photonic crystal nanocavit…
A new type of curved subwavelength light beam, a photonic hook (PH), emerged from the diffraction of a light wave at a mesoscale dielectric object with broken internal symmetry (Janus particle) was recently reported. For efficient and technically simpler generation of PHs, we propose a new type of asymmetric Janus microparticles, the orthogonal microbars, composed from materials with different refractive indices. Based on the numerical simulations by means of the Finite Elements Method, we investigate the physical mechanism of PH formation by analyzing the field intensity distribution and the …
We introduce a numerical procedure which permits to drastically accelerate the design of multimode photonic crystal resonators. Specifically, we demonstrate that the optical response of an important class of such nanoscale structures is reproduced accurately by a simple, one-dimensional model, within the entire spectral range of interest. This model can describe a variety of tapered photonic crystal structures. Orders of magnitude faster to solve, our approach can be used to optimize certain properties of the nanoscale cavity. Here we consider the case of a nanobeam cavity, where the confineme…
The unique properties of the emerging photonic materials - conducting nitrides and oxides - especially their tailorability, large damage thresholds, and the so-called epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) behavior, have enabled novel photonic phenomena spanning optical circuitry, tunable metasurfaces, and nonlinear optical devices. This work explores direct control of the optical properties of polycrystalline titanium nitride (TiN) and aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) by tailoring the film thickness, and their potential for ENZ-enhanced photonic applications. We demonstrate that TiN-AZO bilayers act as Ferre…
We present experimental evidence for the different mechanisms driving the fluctuations of the local density of states (LDOS) in disordered photonic systems. We establish a clear link between the microscopic structure of the material and the frequency correlation function of LDOS accessed by a near-field hyperspectral imaging technique. We show, in particular, that short- and long-range frequency correlations of LDOS are controlled by different physical processes (multiple or single scattering processes, respectively) that can be---to some extent---manipulated independently. We also demonstrate…
We demonstrate off-resonant coupling between a single quantum dot and a nanobeam photonic crystal cavity, under resonant excitation of the quantum dot or the cavity. These results are consistent with previous descriptions of off-resonant coupling as an incoherent phonon-mediated process. The extension of this phenomenon to a nanobeam photonic crystal cavity presents interesting possibilities for coherent control of this interaction by tailoring the phonon density of states.
Transition-metal dichalcogenides with their exciton-dominated optical behavior emerge as promising materials for realizing strong light-matter interactions in the visible range and at ambient conditions. When these materials are combined with metals, the energy confining ability of plasmon polaritons in metals below the diffraction limit, allows for further enhancing and tailoring the light-matter interaction, due to the formation of plexcitons in hybrid metal-TMDC structures at the interface. Herein, we demonstrate that the coupling between quasi-propagating plasmons in plasmonic crystals and…
The generation of chiral laser emission offers promising opportunities for modern photonic applications and the study of chiral light-mater interactions. Despite the great process made in recent years, the direct generation of chiral lasers with controllable chirality remains challenging in a microcavity. This study reports a strategy to control the emission chirality of whispering-gallery-mode organic microlasers with topological-structured chiral liquid crystal droplets. The findings suggest that the topological transformations in a microdroplet can induce different optical chirality strengt…
The research of two-dimensional (2D) materials with atomic-scale thicknesses and unique optical properties has become a frontier in photonics and electronics. Borophene, a newly reported 2D material provides a novel building block for nanoscale materials and devices. We present a simple borophene-based absorption structure to boost the light-borophene interaction via critical coupling in the visible wavelengths. The proposed structure consists of borophene monolayer deposited on a photonic crystal slab backed with a metallic mirror. The numerical simulations and theoretical analysis show that …
We implement a photonic crystal nanofiber device by reversibly combining an optical nanofiber and a nanofabricated grating. Using the finite-difference time-domain method, we design the system for minimal optical loss while tailoring the resonant wavelength and bandwidth of the device. Experimentally we demonstrate that the combined system shows a strong photonic stop-band in good agreement with numerical predictions. The resulting device may be used to realize strong light-matter coupling near to the nanofiber surface.
We demonstrate dispersion tailoring by coupling the even and the odd modes in a line-defect photonic crystal waveguide. Coupling is determined ab-initio using group theory analysis, rather than by trial and error optimisation of the design parameters. A family of dispersion curves is generated by controlling a single geometrical parameter. This concept is demonstrated experimentally on 1.5mm-long waveguides with very good agreement with theory.
Amplitude-modulated nonlinear magneto-optical rotation is a powerful technique that offers a possibility of controllable generation of given quantum states. In this paper, we demonstrate creation and detection of specific ground-state magnetic-sublevel superpositions in $^{87}$Rb. By appropriate tuning of the modulation frequency and magnetic-field induction the efficiency of a given coherence generation is controlled. The processes are analyzed versus different experimental parameters.S
We manipulate optical Tamm states in graphene-based photonics to achieve and steer large magneto-optical effects. Here we report the presence of a giant Faraday rotation via a single graphene layer of atomic thickness while keeping a high transmission. The Faraday rotation is enhanced across the interface between two photonic crystals due to the presence of an interface mode, which presents a strong electromagnetic field confinement at the location of the graphene sheet. Our proposed scheme opens a promising avenue to realize high performance graphene magneto-optical devices that can be extend…
In this work we describe different types of photonic structures that allow tunability of the photonic band gap upon the application of external stimuli, as the electric or magnetic field. We review and compare two porous 1D photonic crystals: in the first one a liquid crystal has been infiltrated in the pores of the nanoparticle network, while in the second one the optical response to the electric field of metallic nanoparticles has been exploited. Then, we present a 1D photonic crystal made with indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles, and we propose this system for electro-optic tuning. Finally…
In the past decade, the concept of parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, originally introduced in non-Hermitian extensions of quantum mechanical theories, has come into thinking of photonics, providing a fertile ground for studying, observing, and utilizing some of the peculiar aspects of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry in optics. Together with related concepts of non-Hermitian physics of open quantum systems, such as non-Hermitian degeneracies (exceptional points) and spectral singularities, $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry represents one among the most fruitful ideas introduced in optics in the past few yea…
We theoretically investigate the dispersion and polarization properties of the electromagnetic waves in a multi-layered structure composed of a magneto-optic waveguide on dielectric substrate covered by one-dimensional dielectric photonic crystal. The numerical analysis of such a complex structure shows polarization filtration of TE- and TM-modes depending on geometrical parameters of the waveguide and photonic crystal. We consider different regimes of the modes propagation inside such a structure: when guiding modes propagate inside the magnetic film and decay in the photonic crystal; when th…
Mid-infrared spectrum can be recorded from almost any material making the mid-infrared spectroscopy an extremely important and widely used sample characterization and analytical technique. However, sensitivity photoconductive detectors operate primarily in the near-infrared (NIR) but not in the mid-infrared making the NIR more favorable for accurate spectral analysis. Although absorption cross-section of vibrational modes in near-infrared is orders of magnitude smaller compared to the fundamental vibrations in mid-infrared, different concepts were proposed to increase the detectability of weak…
We study photonic band structure of two- and three-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals and the polarization properties of their eigenmodes using a plane wave expansion method. The alteration of the photonic band structure and eigenmodes by magnetization are examined. Two orientations are studied: in-plane magnetization and perpendicular magnetization. The magnetization-induced symmetry breaking effects are shown to be responsible for the formation of exotic magnetic Bloch modes, comprised of two or more coupled symmetric and antisymmetric Bloch modes of the corresponding non-magnetic photonic…
Nonreciprocal (NOR) transmission with magneto-optical materials plays a critical role in a broad range of applications, such as optical isolation, all-optical signal processing, and integrated photonic circuits. The underlying mechanism is that a static magnetic field can break the time-reversal symmetry in the presence of magneto-optical materials. However, the typical NOR devices usually need a large size because the weak magneto-optical activity of materials. Here, our theoretical investigations show that the NOR transmission can be obtained in the one-dimensional photonic crystal with a ma…
We report the design of nonreciprocal resonant transmission/reflection using a one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC) adjacent to the magneto-optical (MO) metal film. The nonreciprocal surface modes are found at the interface between the PC and MO metal within the forbidden band of native PC structure. Breaking time-reversal symmetry using external magnetic field gives rise of such unique nonreciprocal properties. Quantitatively understanding of nonreciprocal resonant optical transmission/reflection behavior is performed using an effective admittance-matching theory. With excitation of the no…
Recently, optical bound states in continuum in various passive photonic crystals have been identified and similar structures incorporated with optical gain have been reported to exhibit lasing. However, no explicit control over the type of lasing BIC has been reported. In this work, we utilize all four fundamental BICs related to the lowest energy Gamma-point of a square photonic crystal lattice. We identify the associated topological charges from experimentally obtained dispersions, finite element method simulations, as well as from spherical decomposition method based on the microscopic pola…
We extend results of [Liu et al. Proc. Roy. Soc. Lond. A 469, 20130240, 2013] on artificial magneto-electric coupling and magnetism in moderate contrast dielectric layered media via high-order homogenization to the three-dimensional setting. For this, we consider asymptotic expansions in the vector Maxwell system. We then illustrate effect of magneto-electric coupling with numerical simulations for a layered system alternating positively and negatively refracting index. We unveil hyperbolic behaviour and magneto-electric coupling and derive a sharper estimate for the anisotropic effective medi…
We present a theoretical study of the effect of an external dc magnetic field in the near-field radiative heat transfer between two one-dimensional magneto-photonic crystals with unit cells comprising a magneto-optical layer made of n-doped InSb and a dielectric layer. We find that in absence of an external field, and depending on the gap size, the radiative heat transfer between these multilayer structures can be larger or smaller than that of the case of two InSb infinite plates. On the other hand, when an external magnetic field is applied, the near-field radiative heat transfer is reduced …
The employment of magneto-optical materials to fabricate photonic crystals gives the unique opportunity to achieve optical tuning by applying a magnetic field. In this study we have simulated the transmission spectrum of a microcavity in which the Bragg reflectors are made with silica (SiO2) and yttria (Y2O3) and the defect layer is made with TGG (Tb3Ga5O12). We show that the application of an external magnetic field results in a tuning of the defect mode of the microcavity. In the simulations we have considered the wavelength dependence of the refractive indexes and the Verdet constants of th…
Recently, moiré engineering has been extensively employed for creating and studying novel electronic materials in two dimensions. However, its application in nanophotonic systems has not been widely explored so far. Here, we demonstrate that twisted bilayer photonic crystals provide a new photonic platform with twist-angle-tunable optical dispersion. Compared to twisted two-dimensional materials, twisted bilayer photonic crystals host a rich set of physics and provide a much larger number of degrees of freedom choice of material, lattice symmetry, feature size, twist angle, and interlayer gap,…
The photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is one of the excellent media for generating photon pairs via spontaneous four wave mixing. Here we study how the inhomogeneity of PCFs affect the spectral properties of photon pairs from both the theoretical and experimental aspects. The theoretical model shows that the photon pairs born in different place of the inhomogeneous PCF are coherently superposed, and a modulation in the broadened spectrum of phase matching function will appear, which prevents the realization of spectral factorable photon pairs. In particular, the inhomogeneity induced modulation can…
Silicon photonics promises to alleviate the bandwidth bottleneck of modern day computing systems. But silicon photonic devices have the fundamental problem of being highly sensitive to ambient temperature fluctuations due to the high thermo-optic (TO) coefficient of silicon. Most of the approaches proposed to date to overcome this problem either require significant power consumption or incorporate materials which are not CMOS-compatible. Here we demonstrate a new class of optical devices which are passively temperature compensated, based on tailoring the optical mode confinement in silicon wav…
We show that by manipulating the momentum (k) of a propagating optical pulse, the intensity can be controlled and highly enhanced in a linear binary photonic time crystal (PTC) system. The optical pulse equipped with k lying within the bandgap of the PTC gets amplified and gives rise to reflected and transmitted pulses with an equal growth in intensity moving in opposite directions. We predict and quantify the amount of amplification of the transmitted and reflected pulse and show the amplifications achieve a maximum at the centre of the k-gap accompanied by weaker growth in intensity at the e…
We report on enhanced fluorescence of lead sulfide quantum dots interacting with leaky modes of slab-type silicon photonic crystals. The photonic crystal slabs were fabricated supporting leaky modes in the near infrared wavelength range. Lead sulfite quantum dots which are resonant the same spectral range were prepared in a thin layer above the slab. We selectively excited the leaky modes by tuning wavelength and angle of incidence of the laser source and measured distinct resonances of enhanced fluorescence. By an appropriate experiment design, we ruled out directional light extraction effect…
Tailoring the interactions between quantum emitters and single photons constitutes one of the cornerstones of quantum optics. Coupling a quantum emitter to the band edge of a photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) provides a unique platform for tuning these interactions. In particular, the crossover from propagating fields $E(x) \propto e^{\pm ik_x x}$ outside the bandgap to localized fields $E(x) \propto e^{-κ_x |x|}$ within the bandgap should be accompanied by a transition from largely dissipative atom-atom interactions to a regime where dispersive atom-atom interactions are dominant. Here, we exp…
Birefringent magnetophotonic crystals are found to exhibit degeneracy breaking for asymmetric contradirectional coupling in planar waveguides. Fundamental to high-order local normal mode coupling leads to partially overlapping gyrotropic bandgaps inside the Brillouin zone and partial suppression of Bloch mode propagation. A large magneto-optically active reorientation in polarization state is found for allowed Bloch modes at bandgap edges.
The polarization properties of a magnetophotonic crystal at the frequencies located in the vicinity of ferromagnetic resonance are studied. The investigations are curried out taking into consideration the fact that the magnitude of material losses in ferrite layers at this frequency band is significant. The method is based on obtaining a system of ordinary differential equations and further analyzing the stability of solutions of this system. The electromagnetic properties of the structure under study are found out via the analysis of the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix of the structure per…
We present an approach to fabrication and packaging of integrated photonic devices that utilizes waveguide and detector layers deposited at near-ambient temperature. All lithography is performed with a 365 nm i-line stepper, facilitating low cost and high scalability. We have shown low-loss SiN waveguides, high-$Q$ ring resonators, critically coupled ring resonators, 50/50 beam splitters, Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) and a process-agnostic fiber packaging scheme. We have further explored the utility of this process for applications in nonlinear optics and quantum photonics. We demonstra…
Here we propose a magnetophotonic structure for the layer-selective magnetization switching with ultrashort laser pulses of different wavelengths. It is based on a chirped magnetophotonic crystal (MPC) containing magnetic GdFeCo and nonmagnetic dielectric layers. At each operating wavelength the laser pulses heat up to necessary level only one GdFeCo layer that leads to its magnetization reversal without any impact on the magnetization of the other layers. Moreover, magneto-optical reading of the MPC magnetization state is discussed. Lateral dimensions of the considered MPC can be made small e…
Polaritons in polar biaxial crystals with extreme anisotropy offer a promising route to manipulate nanoscale light-matter interactions. The dynamical modulation of their dispersion is great significance for future integrated nano-optics but remains challenging. Here, we report a momentum-directed strategy, a coupling between the modes with extra momentum supported by the interface and in-plane hyperbolic polaritons, to tailor topological transitions of anisotropic polaritons in biaxial crystals. We experimentally demonstrate such tailored polaritons at the interface of heterostructures between…
Photonic bandgap design is one of the most basic ways to effectively control the interaction between light and matter. However, the traditional photonic bandgap is always dispersive (blueshift with the increase of the incident angle), which is disadvantageous to the construction of wide-angle optical devices. Hypercrystal, that the photonic crystal with layered hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs), can strongly modify the bandgap properties based on the anomalous wavevector dispersion of the HMM. Here, based on phase variation compensation between HMM and isotropic dielectric layers, we propose for…
