We present the concept and electromagnetic aspects of HyperSurFaces (HSFs), artificial, ultrathin structures with software controlled electromagnetic properties. The HSFs key unit is the metasurface, a plane with designed subwavelength features whose electromagnetic response can be tuned via voltage-controlled continuously-tunable electrical elements that provide local control of the surface impedance and advanced functionalities, such as tunable perfect absorption or wavefront manipulation. A nanonetwork of controllers enables software defined HSFs control related to the emerging Internet of Things paradigm.
Tunable metasurfaces are ultra-thin, artificial electromagnetic components that provide engineered and externally adjustable functionalities. The programmable metasurface, the HyperSurFace, concept consists in integrating controllers within the metasurface that interact locally and communicate globally to obtain a given electromagnetic behaviour. Here, we address the design constraints introduced by both functions accommodated by the programmable metasurface, i.e., the desired metasurface operation and the unit cells wireless communication enabling such programmable functionality. The design p…
Waveguides are critically important components in microwave, THz, and optical technologies. Due to recent progress in two-dimensional materials, metasurfaces can be efficiently used to design novel waveguide structures which confine the electromagnetic energy while the structure is open. Here, we introduce a special type of such structures formed by two penetrable metasurfaces which have complementary isotropic surface impedances. We theoretically study guided modes supported by the proposed structure and discuss the corresponding dispersion properties. Furthermore, we show the results for dif…
This work investigates the generation of arbitrary electromagnetic waveforms inside a geometrical area enclosed by an active metasurface. We introduce the contraption of the Huygens' box, where a region of space is enclosed by an active Huygens' metasurface. We show that, upon generating the necessary electric and magnetic currents, we can create any desired electromagnetic field inside the Huygens' box. Using this method, we demonstrate through simulation and experiment the generation of travelling plane waves, a standing plane wave and a Bessel wave inside a metallic cavity. By linear superp…
We thoroughly investigate the electromagnetic response of intelligent functional metasurfaces. We study two distinct designs operating at different frequency regimes, namely, a switch-fabric-based design for GHz frequencies and a graphene-based approach for THz band, and discuss the respective practical design considerations. The performance for tunable perfect absorption applications is assessed in both cases.
We report the polarization-dependent electromagnetic response from a series of novel terahertz (THz) metasurfaces where asymmetry is introduced through the displacement of two adjacent metallic arms separated by a distance $δ$. For all polarization states, the symmetric metasurface exhibits a low quality (Q) factor fundamental dipole mode. By breaking the symmetry, we experimentally observe a secondary dipole-like mode with a Q factor nearly $9\times$ higher than the fundamental resonance. As $δ$ increases, the fundamental dipole mode $f_{1}$ redshifts and the secondary mode $f_{2}$ blueshifts…
Electromagnetic environments are becoming increasingly complex and congested, creating a growing challenge for systems that rely on electromagnetic waves for communication, sensing, or imaging, particularly in reverberating environments. The use of programmable metasurfaces provides a potential means of directing waves to optimize wireless channels on-demand, ensuring reliable operation and protecting sensitive electronic components. Here we introduce a technique that combines a deep learning network with a binary programmable metasurface to shape waves in complex reverberant electromagnetic e…
HyperSurfaces (HSFs) are devices whose electromagnetic (EM) behavior is software-driven, i.e., it can be defined programmatically. The key components of this emerging technology are the metasurfaces, artificial layered materials whose EM properties depend on their internal subwavelength structuring. HSFs merge metasurfaces with a network of miniaturized custom electronic controllers, the nanonetwork, in an integrated scalable hardware platform. The nanonetwork receives external programmatic commands expressing the desired end-functionality and appropriately alters the metasurface configuration…
In recent years, metasurfaces have shown extremely powerful abilities for manipulation of electromagnetic waves. However, the local electromagnetic response of conventional metasurfaces yields to an intrinsic performance limitation in terms of efficiency, minimizing their implementation in real-life applications. The efficiency of reconfigurable metasurfaces further decreases because of the high density of meta-atoms, reaching 74 meta-atoms per $λ^2$ area, incorporating lossy tunable elements. To address these problems, we implement strong electromagnetic non-local features in a \textit{sparse…
A systematic numerical framework based on Integral Equations and Generalized Sheet Transition Conditions (IE-GSTCs) is presented in 2D to synthesize closed metasurface holograms and skins for creating electromagnetic illusions of specified objects and as a special case, to camouflaging them against their backgrounds. The versatile hologram surface is modeled using a zero-thickness sheet model of a generalized metasurface expressed in terms of its surface susceptibilities, which is further integrated into the GSTCs and the IE current-field propagation operators. To estimate the effectiveness of…

With tunability added to the unit cells, the programmable metasurfaces enable us to benefit from multiple unique functionalities controlled by external stimuli. In this review paper, we will discuss the recent progress in the field of programmable metasurfaces and elaborate on different approaches to realize them, with the tunability from global aspects, to local aspects, and…
In this letter, we propose a magnet-less non-reciprocal isolating system based on time-varying metasurfaces. Two parallel time-varying metasurfaces, one for frequency up-conversion and one for down-conversion by the same amount, are used for realizing a region of space where incident waves from opposite directions experience an opposite Doppler frequency shift. As a result, any device within this region becomes sensitive to the illumination direction, exhibiting a different scattering response from opposite directions and thus breaking reciprocity. Very importantly, thanks to the opposite freq…
A finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation of broadband electromagnetic metasurfaces based on direct in- corporation of Generalized Sheet Transition Conditions (GSTCs) inside a conventional Yee-cell region has been proposed, for arbitrary wave excitations. This is achieved by inserting a zero thickness metasurface inside bulk nodes of the Yee-cell region, giving rise to three distinct cell configurations - Symmetric Cell (SC), Asymmetric Cell (AC) and Tight Asymmetric Cell (TAC). In addition, the metasurface is modelled using electric and magnetic surface susceptibilities exhibiting a b…
We demonstrate a classical analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a highly flexible planar terahertz metamaterial (MM) comprised of three-gap split ring resonators. The keys to achieve EIT in this system are the frequency detuning and hybridization processes between two bright modes coexisting in the same unit cell as opposed to bright-dark modes. We present experimental verification of two-bright mode coupling for a terahertz EIT-MM in the context of numerical results and theoretical analysis based on a coupled Lorentz oscillator model. In addition, a hybrid variation o…
Metasurfaces have shown unprecedented possibilities for wavefront manipulation of waves. The research efforts have been focused on the development of metasurfaces that perform a specific functionality for waves of one physical nature, for example, for electromagnetic waves. In this work, we propose the use of power-flow conformal metamirrors for creation of multiphysics devices which can simultaneously control waves of different nature. In particular, we introduce metasurface devices which perform specified operations on both electromagnetic and acoustic waves at the same time. Using a purely …
The possibility of making an object invisible for detectors has become a topic of considerable interest over the past decades. Most of the studies so far focused on reducing the visibility by reshaping the electromagnetic scattering in the spatial domain. In fact, by manipulating the electromagnetic scattering in the time domain, the visibility of an object can also be reduced. Importantly, unlike previous studies on phase-switched screens and time-varying metasurfaces, where the effect is narrow band due to the dispersive resonance, for microwave frequency range, we introduce a broadband swit…
We report a waveform-selective metasurface that operates at 2.4 GHz band, i.e. one of ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) bands. This structure gives us an additional degree of freedom to control electromagnetic waves and absorbs a particular waveform or pulse width of an incident wave at the same frequency band, while transmitting others. This unique capability is demonstrated using either ideal sinusoidal waves or Wi-Fi signals as a more practical waveform in wireless communications. Especially, this study shows how the waveform-selective metasurface interacts with realistic wireless co…
Electromagnetic metasurfaces offer the capability to realize almost arbitrary power conserving field transformations. These field transformations are governed by the generalized sheet transition conditions, which relate the tangential fields on each side of the surface through the surface parameters. Ideally, engineers would like to determine the surface parameters for transformations based on their application-specific far-field criteria. However, determining the surface parameters to satisfy these criteria is challenging without direct knowledge of the tangential fields on one side of the su…
Electromagnetic metasurfaces can be characterized as intelligent if they are able to perform multiple tunable functions, with the desired response being controlled by a computer influencing the individual electromagnetic properties of each metasurface inclusion. In this paper, we present an example of an intelligent metasurface which operates in the reflection mode in the microwave frequency range. We numerically show that without changing the main body of the metasurface we can achieve tunable perfect absorption and tunable anomalous reflection. The tunability features can be implemented usin…
In this work, we theoretically and experimentally study the conversion from a circularly polarized plane electromagnetic wave into a linearly polarized transmitted one using anisotropic self-complementary metasurfaces. For this purpose, a metasurface design operable at sub-terahertz frequencies is proposed and investigated in the range of 230-540 GHz. The metasurface is composed of alternating complementary rectangular patches and apertures patterned in an aluminum layer deposited on a thin polypropylene film. The term \textit{self-complementary} implies that the pattern is invariant with resp…
In this paper we propose a new metasurface that is able to reflect a known incoming electromagnetic wave into an arbitrary direction, with perfect power efficiency. This seemingly simple task, which we hereafter call perfect anomalous reflection, is actually highly non-trivial due to the differing wave impedances and complex interference between the incident and reflected waves. Heretofore, proposed metasurfaces which achieve perfect anomalous reflection require complicated, deeply subwavelength and/or multilayer element structures which allow them to couple to and from leaky and/or evanescent…
In this paper we present the theoretical considerations and the design evolution of a proof-of-concept reconfigurable metasurface, primarily used as a tunable microwave absorber, but also as a wavefront manipulation and polarization conversion device in reflection. We outline the design evolution and all considerations taken into account, from the selection of patch shape, unit cell size, and substrate, to the topology of the structure that realizes the desired tunability. The presented design conforms to fabrication restrictions and is co-designed to work with an integrated circuit chip for p…

Metasurfaces offered great opportunities to control electromagnetic (EM) waves, but currently available meta-devices typically work either in pure reflection or pure transmission mode, leaving half of EM space completely unexplored. Here, we propose a new type of metasurface, composed by specifically designed meta-atoms with polarization-dependent transmission and reflection properties, to efficiently manipulate EM waves in the full space. As a proof of concept, three microwave meta-devices are designed, fabricated and experimentally characterized. The first two can bend or focus EM waves at d…
We propose a novel numerical approach for the optimal design of wide-area heterogeneous electromagnetic metasurfaces beyond the conventionally used unit-cell approximation. The proposed method exploits the combination of Rigorous Coupled Wave Analysis (RCWA) and global optimization techniques (two evolutionary algorithms namely the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and a modified form of the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC with memetic search phase method) are considered). As a specific example, we consider the design of beam deflectors using all-dielectric nanoantennae for operation in the visible wavelength…
This paper presents space-time varying (STV) metasurfaces for simultaneously controlling the spatial and temporal spectra of electromagnetic waves. These metasurfaces transform incident electromagnetic waves into specified reflected and transmitted waves, with arbitrary temporal and spatial frequencies. They are synthesized in terms of time-domain generalized sheet transition conditions (GSTCs). Moreover, they are characterized using an analytical method and the unstaggered finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique adapted to space-time metasurfaces. STV metasurfaces performing pulse shap…
Software-defined metasurfaces are electromagnetically ultra-thin, artificial components that can provide engineered and externally controllable functionalities. The control over these functionalities is enabled by the metasurface tunability, which is implemented by embedded electronic circuits that modify locally the surface resistance and reactance. Integrating controllers within the metasurface cells, able to intercommunicate and adaptively reconfigure it, thus imparting a desired electromagnetic operation, opens the path towards the creation of an artificially intelligent (AI) fabric where …
We derive a model to describe the interaction of an rf-SQUID (radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device) based metasurface with free space electromagnetic waves. The electromagnetic fields are described on the base of Maxwell's equations. For the rf-SQUID metasurface we rely on an equivalent circuit model. After a detailed derivation, we show that the problem that is described by a system of coupled differential equations is wellposed and, therefore, has a unique solution. In the small amplitude limit, we provide analytical expressions for reflection, transmission, and absorp…
We show that the use of the electromagnetic inverse source framework offers great flexibility in the design of metasurfaces. In particular, this approach is advantageous for antenna design applications where the goal is often to satisfy a set of performance criteria such as half power beamwidths and null directions, rather than satisfying a fully-known complex field. In addition, the inverse source formulation allows the metasurface and the region over which the desired field specifications are provided to be of arbitrary shape. Some of the main challenges in solving this inverse source proble…
Programmable metasurfaces have garnered significant attention as they confer unprecedented control over the electromagnetic response of any surface. Such feature has given rise to novel design paradigms such as Software-Defined Metamaterials (SDM) and Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) with multiple groundbreaking applications. However, the development of programmable metasurfaces tailored to the particularities of a potentially broad application pool becomes a daunting task because the design space becomes remarkably large. This paper aims to ease the design process by proposing a meth…
In analogy with electromagnetic networks which connect multiple input-output ports, metasurfaces can be considered as multi-port devices capable of providing different functionalities for waves of different polarizations illuminating the surface from different directions. The main challenge in the design of such multichannel metasurfaces is to ensure independent and full control of the electromagnetic response for each channel ensuring the fulilment of the boundary condition at the metasurface. In this work, we demonstrate that by properly engineering the evanescent fields excited at each port…
We introduce chiral gradient metasurfaces that allow perfect transmission of all the incident wave into a desired direction and simultaneous perfect rotation of the polarization of the refracted wave with respect to the incident one. Besides using gradient polarization densities which provide bending of the refracted wave with respect to the incident one, using metasurface inclusions that are chiral allows the polarization of the refracted wave to be rotated. We suggest a possible realization of the proposed device by discretizing the required equivalent surface polarization densities realized…
Metasurfaces represent a new paradigm in artificial subwavelength structures due to their potential to overcome many challenges typically associated with bulk metamaterials. The ability making very thin structures and change their properties dynamically make metasurfaces an exceptional meta-optics platform for engineering advanced electromagnetic and photonic metadevices. Here, we suggest and demonstrate experimentally a novel tunable metasurface capable to enhance significantly the local image quality in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We present a design of the hybrid metasurface based on …
Metasurfaces impart phase discontinuities on impinging electromagnetic waves that are typically limited to 0-2$π$. Here, we show that they can break free from this limitation and supply arbitrarily-large phase modulation over ultra-wide bandwidths. This is achieved by implementing multiple, properly-arranged resonances in the electric and magnetic sheet admittivities. We demonstrate metasurfaces that can perfectly reflect a broadband pulse imparting a prescribed group delay without distorting the pulse shape, opening new possibilities for temporal control and dispersion engineering across deep…
Static metasurfaces have shown to be prominent compact structures for reciprocal and frequency-invariant transformation of electromagnetic waves in space. However, incorporating temporal variation to static metasurfaces would result in dynamic apparatuses which are capable of four-dimensional tailoring of both the spatial and temporal characteristics of electromagnetic waves, leading to functionalities that are far beyond the capabilities of conventional static metasurfaces. This includes nonreciprocal full-duplex wave transmission, pure frequency conversion, parametric wave amplification, spa…
Using metasurfaces to control the wave propagation at will has been very successful over the broad electromagnetic spectrum in recent years. By encoding specially designed abrupt changes of electromagnetic parameters into metasurfaces, such as phase and amplitude, nearly arbitrary control over the output wavefronts could be realized. Constituted by a single- or fewlayer of planar structures, metasurfaces are straightforward in design and fabrication, thus promising many realistic applications. Moreover, such control concept can be further extended to the surface wave regime. In this review, we…
We present methods for analyzing and designing cylindrical electromagnetic metasurfaces with non-circular cross sections based on conformal transformations. It can be difficult to treat surfaces with non-canonical geometries since they generally do not admit straightforward solutions to the Helmholtz wave equation subject to the appropriate boundary conditions. This leads to the reliance on full wave numerical techniques which are only suitable for the analysis, but not the synthesis, of these surfaces. We address this issue by employing conformal transformations to map the physical space into…
Metasurfaces (MSs) have been utilized to manipulate different properties of electromagnetic waves. By combining local control over the wave amplitude, phase, and polarization into a single tunable structure, a multi-functional and reconfigurable metasurface can be realized, capable of full control over incident radiation. Here, we experimentally validate a multi-functional metasurface architecture for the microwave regime, where in principle variable loads are connected behind the backplane to reconfigurably shape the complex surface impedance. As a proof-of-concept step, we fabricate several …
Modern electronic systems operate in complex electromagnetic environments and must handle noise and unwanted coupling. The capability to isolate or reject unwanted signals for mitigating vulnerabilities is critical in any practical application. In this work, we describe the use of a binary programmable metasurface to (i) control the spatial degrees of freedom for waves propagating inside an electromagnetic cavity and demonstrate the ability to create nulls in the transmission coefficient between selected ports; and (ii) create the conditions for coherent perfect absorption. Both objectives are…

Metasurfaces have received a lot of attentions recently due to their versatile capability in manipulating electromagnetic wave. Advanced designs to satisfy multiple objectives with non-linear constraints have motivated researchers in using machine learning (ML) techniques like deep learning (DL) for accelerated design of metasurfaces. For metasurfaces, it is difficult to make quantitative comparisons between different ML models without having a common and yet complex dataset used in many disciplines like image classification. Many studies were directed to a relatively constrained datasets that…
