We report an analysis of electron-optical properties of a toroidal magnetic sector spectrometer and examine parameters for its implementation in a relativistic heavy-ion storage ring like HESR. For studies of free-free pair production in heavy-ion atom collisions this spectrometer exhibits very high efficiencies for coincident $e^+e^-$ pair spectroscopy over a wide range of momenta of emitted lepton pairs. The high coincidence efficiency of the spectrometer is the key for stringent tests of theoretical predictions for the coincident positron- and electron- emission characteristics and for the phase space correlation of lepton vector momenta in free-free pair production.

Here we describe an advanced multi functional, variable-energy positron beam system capable of measuring the energies of multiple positron-induced electrons in coincidence with the Doppler-shifted gamma photon resulting from the annihilation of the correlated positron. The measurements were carried out using the unique characteristics of the digital time-of-flight spectrometer and the gamma spectrometer available with the advanced positron beam system. These measurements have resulted in (i) the first digital time of flight spectrum of positron annihilation-induced Auger electrons generated us…
Monte Carlo analysis of the contributions of long-lived positronium to the spectra of positron-impact-induced secondary electrons measured using an annihilation-gamma-triggered time-of-flight spectrometer
We report on a new measurement of the cosmic ray (CR) electron and positron spectra in the energy range of 20 MeV -- 1 GeV. The data were taken during the first flight of the balloon-borne spectrometer AESOP-Lite (Anti Electron Sub Orbital Payload), which was flown from Esrange, Sweden, to Ellesmere Island, Canada, in May 2018. The instrument accumulated over 130 hours of exposure at an average altitude of 3 g.cm$^{-2}$ of residual atmosphere. The experiment uses a gas Cherenkov detector and a magnetic spectrometer, consisting of a permanent dipole magnet and silicon strip detectors (SSDs), to…
We report the design and development of a compact electron and positron spectrometer based on tapered Neodymium Iron Boron magnets. We show that the tapered design forms a gradient magnetic field component allowing energy dependent focusing of the dispersed charged particles along a chosen detector plane using RADIA, a code developed by European Synchrotron Radiation Facility for solving three-dimensional magnetostatics configuration, and a fourth order Runge-Kutta Particle Tracking code. The mirror symmetric design allows for simultaneous detection of pairs i.e. electrons and positrons with e…
We demonstrate that vacuum forming of 10-cm diameter silicon wafers of various crystallographic orientations under an x-ray permeable, flexible window can easily generate spherically bent crystal analyzers (SBCA) and toroidally bent crystal analyzers (TBCA) with ~1-eV energy resolution and a 1-m major radius of curvature. In applications at synchrotron light sources, x-ray free electron lasers, and laboratory spectrometers these characteristics are generally sufficient for many x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (R…
In this paper, we present and analyze measurements of the positron induced electron spectra (PIES) from highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). The spectra were obtained using a time of flight spectrometer attached to a variable energy positron beam. In the first measurements presented, the system was configured to obtain high resolution data from the annihilation induced KVV Auger transition of carbon. In the second set of data presented, PIES spectra were obtained for 3 different positron beam energies (1.25 eV, 3.5 eV and 4.5 eV). The resulting time of flight (ToF)-PIES exhibit contribut…
