The impact of adiabatic electrons on drift-wave turbulence, modelled by the Hasegawa-Wakatani equations, is studied using information length. Information length is a novel theoretical method for measuring distances between statistical states represented by different probability distribution functions (PDFs) along the path of a system. Specifically, the time-dependent PDFs of turbulent fluctuations for a given adiabatic index $A$ is computed. The changes in fluctuation statistics are then quantified in time by using information length. The numerical results provide time traces exhibiting intermittent plasma dynamics, and such behaviour is identified by a rapid change in the information length. The effects of $A$ are discussed.
The Hasegawa-Wakatani models are used in the study of confinement of hot plasmas with externally imposed magnetic fields. The nonlinear terms in the Hasegawa-Wakatani models complicate the analysis of the system as they propagate local changes across the entire system. Centre manifold analysis allows us to project down onto much smaller systems that are more easily analysed. Qualitative information about the behaviour of the reduced system, such as whether it is stable or unstable, can be used to predict the behaviour of the original full system. We show how the simple structure of the linear …
Resistive drift wave turbulence is a multipurpose paradigm that can be used to understand transport at the edge of fusion devices. The Hasegawa-Wakatani model captures the essential physics of drift turbulence while retaining the simplicity needed to gain a qualitative understanding of this process. We provide a theoretical interpretation of numerically generated probability density functions (PDFs) of intermittent events in Hasegawa-Wakatani turbulence with enforced equipartition of energy in large scale zonal flows and small scale drift turbulence. We find that for a wide range of adiabatic …
We show that the recently introduced two-field flux-balanced Hasegawa-Wakatani (BHW) model captures the key features of drift-wave turbulent transport mediated by zonal flows observed in more complete and accurate gyrokinetic simulations, such as the existence of a nonlinear upshift of the threshold for drift wave turbulence driven transport, often called the Dimits shift, as well as non-local transport with avalanche bursts and solitary propagating structures. Because of the approximations made in the BHW model, these observations are made for the particle flux instead of the heat flux more c…

Plasma turbulence described by the Hasegawa-Wakatani equations has been simulated numerically for different models and values of the adiabaticity parameter C. It is found that for low values of C turbulence remains isotropic, zonal flows are not generated and there is no suppression of the meridional drift waves and of the particle transport. For high values of C, turbulence evolves toward highly anisotropic states with a dominant contribution of the zonal sector to the kinetic energy. This anisotropic flow leads to a decrease of a turbulence production in the meridional sector and limits the …
We propose a new reduced fluid model for the study of the drift wave -- zonal flow dynamics in magnetically confined plasmas. Our model can be viewed as an extension of the classic Hasegawa-Wakatani (HW) model, and is based on an improved treatment of the electron dynamics parallel to the field lines, to guarantee a balanced electron flux on the magnetic surfaces. Our flux-balanced HW (bHW) model contains the same drift-wave instability as previous HW models, but unlike these models, it converges exactly to the modified Hasegawa-Mima model in the collisionless limit. We rely on direct numerica…
We investigate the drift wave -- zonal flow dynamics in a shearless slab geometry with the new flux-balanced Hasegawa-Wakatani model. As in previous Hasegawa-Wakatani models, we observe a sharp transition from a turbulence dominated regime to a zonal jet dominated regime as we decrease the plasma resistivity. However, unlike previous models, zonal structures are always present in the flux-balanced model, even for high resistivity, and strongly reduce the level of particle and vorticity flux. The more robust zonal jets also have a higher variability than in previous models, which is further enh…
The propagation of microwaves across a turbulent plasma density layer is investigated with full-wave simulations. To properly represent a fusion edge-plasma, drift-wave turbulence is considered based on the Hasegawa-Wakatani model. Scattering and broadening of a microwave beam whose amplitude distribution is of Gaussian shape is studied in detail as a function of certain turbulence properties. Parameters leading to the strongest deterioration of the microwave beam are identified and implications for existing experiments are given.
Lagrangian statistics and particle transport in edge plasma turbulence are investigated using the Hasegawa-Wakatani model and its modified version. The latter shows the emergence of pronounced zonal flows. Different values of the adiabaticity parameter are considered. The main goal is to characterize the role of coherent structures, i.e., vortices and zonal flows, and their impact on the Lagrangian statistics of particles. Computationally intensive long time simulations following ensembles of test particles over hundreds of eddy turnover times are considered in statistically stationary turbule…
The Hasegawa-Wakatani equations, coupling plasma density and electrostatic potential through an approximation to the physics of parallel electron motions, are a simple model that describes resistive drift wave turbulence. We present numerical analyses of bifurcation phenomena in the model that provide new insights into the interactions between turbulence and zonal flows in the tokamak plasma edge region. The simulation results show a regime where, after an initial transient, drift wave turbulence is suppressed through zonal flow generation. As a parameter controlling the strength of the turbul…
The turbulent transport of impurity particles in plasma edge turbulence is investigated. The impurities are modeled as a passive fluid advected by the electric and polarization drifts, while the ambient plasma turbulence is modeled using the two-dimensional Hasegawa--Wakatani paradigm for resistive drift-wave turbulence. The features of the turbulent transport of impurities are investigated by numerical simulations using a novel code that applies semi-Lagrangian pseudospectral schemes. The diffusive character of the turbulent transport of ideal impurities is demonstrated by relative-diffusion …
