Controlling the direction and magnitude of both heat and electronic currents using rectifiers has significant implications for the advancement of molecular circuit design. In order to facilitate the implementation of new transport phenomena in such molecular structures, we examine thermal and thermoelectric rectification effects that are induced by an electron transfer process that occurs across a temperature gradient between molecules. Historically, the only known heat conduction mechanism able to generate thermal rectification in purely molecular environments is phononic heat transport. Here, we show that electron transfer between molecular sites with different local temperatures can also generate a thermal rectification effect and that electron hopping through molecular bridges connecting metal leads at different temperatures gives rise to asymmetric Seebeck effects, that is, thermoelectric rectification, in molecular junctions.
Heat engines made of quantum-dot (QD) superlattice nanowires (SLNWs) offer promising applications in energy harvesting due to the reduction of phonon thermal conductivity. In solid state electrical generators (refrigerators), one needs to generate (remove) large amount of charge current (heat current). Consequently, a high QD SLNW density is required for realistic applications. This study theoretically investigated the properties of power factor and electron heat rectification for an SLNW array under the transition from a one dimensional system to a two dimensional system. The SLNW arrays show…
Interference represents one of the most striking manifestation of quantum physics in low-dimensional systems. Despite evidences of quantum interference in charge transport have been known for a long time, only recently signatures of interference induced thermal properties have been reported, paving the way for the phase-coherent manipulation of heat in mesoscopic devices. In this work we show that anomalous thermoelectric properties and efficient heat rectification can be achieved by exploiting the phase-coherent edge states of quantum Hall systems. By considering a tunneling geometry with mul…
The electrical conductance, thermal conductance, thermal power and figure of merit (ZT) of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) embedded into an insulator matrix connected with metallic electrodes are theoretically investigated in the Coulomb blockade regime. The multilevel Anderson model is used to simulate the multiple QDs junction system. The charge and heat currents in the sequential tunneling process are calculated by the Keldysh Green function technique. In the linear response regime the ZT values are still very impressive in the small tunneling rates case, although the effect of electron Co…
Based on the multiple energy level Anderson model, this study theoretically examines the thermoelectric effects of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) in the nonlinear response regime. The charge and heat currents in the sequential tunneling process are calculated by using the Keldysh Green's function technique. Results show that the thermal rectification effect can be observed in a multiple QD junction system, whereas the tunneling rate, size fluctuation, and location distribution of QD significantly influence the rectification efficiency.
We theoretically investigate the enhancement of thermoelectric cooling performance in thermoelectric devices made of materials with inhomogeneous thermal conductivity, beyond the usual practice of enhancing thermoelectric figure of merit ZT. The dissipation of Joule heat in such thermoelectric devices is asymmetric which can give rise to better thermoelectric cooling performance. Although the thermoelectric figure of merit and the coefficient-of-performance are only slightly enhanced, both the maximum cooling power and the maximum cooling temperature difference can be enhanced significantly. T…
The nonlinear thermoelectric properties of serially coupled quantum dots (SCQDs) embedded in a nanowire connected to metallic electrodes are theoretically studied in the Coulomb blockade regime. We demonstrate that the electron heat current of SCQDs exhibit a direction-dependent behavior (heat rectification) in an asymmetrical structure in which the electron Coulomb interactions are significant. The phonon thermal conductivity of the nanowire is also calculated, which is used to estimate the phonon heat current. Finally, we discuss how to reduce phonon heat current to allow observation of elec…
Thermal rectification which is a diode-like behavior of heat flux has been studied over a long time. However, a universal and systematic physical description is still lacking. In this letter, a perturbation theory of thermal rectification is developed, which provides an analytical formula of the thermal rectification ratio. It reveals the linear relationship between the thermal rectification ratio and temperature difference. Furthermore, the size-dependence of the thermal rectification relies on the specific form of the thermal conductivity. In addition, several experimental and numerical obse…
The low rectification ratio limits the application of thermal rectifiers. In this paper, it is found that a series circuit of thermal rectifiers in asymmetric graphene/graphene phononic crystal (GPnC) structures can improve rectification significantly. The simulations by using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) are performed. Moreover, the size effect on thermal rectification is also studied and discussed.
Thermal rectification in thickness asymmetric graphene nanoribbons connecting single-layer with multi-layer graphene is investigated by using classical nonequilibrium molecular dynamics. It is reported that the graphene nanoribbons with thickness-asymmetry have a good thermal rectification. The thermal rectification factor depends on temperature as well as the thickness-ratio of the two-segment. Our results provide a direct evidence that the thermal rectifier can be achieved in a nanostructure crossing two- and three-dimension.
We study ballistic thermal transport in three-terminal atomic nanojunctions by the nonequilibrium Green's function method. We find that there is ballistic thermal rectification in asymmetric three-terminal structures because of the incoherent phonon scattering from the control terminal. With spin-phonon interaction, we also find the ballistic thermal rectification even in symmetric three-terminal paramagnetic structures.
We describe nonlinear phonon-thermoelectric devices where charge current and electronic and phononic heat currents are coupled, driven by voltage and temperature biases, when phonon-assisted inelastic processes dominate the transport. Our thermoelectric transistors and rectifiers can be realized in a gate-tunable double quantum-dot system embedded in a nanowire which is realizable within current technology. The inelastic electron-phonon scattering processes are found to induce pronounced charge, heat, and cross rectification effects, as well as a thermal transistor effect that, remarkably, can…
The radial thermal rectification in the concentric silicon ring from ballistic to diffusive regime is investigated based on the phonon Boltzmann transport equation. In the ballistic and diffusive limits, the analytical solutions prove that there is no thermal rectification. In the ballistic-diffusive regime, the heat flux prefers to flow from the inner boundary to the outer boundary. Furthermore, as the characteristic length (the distance between two circular boundaries) increases from tens of nanometers to tens of microns, the thermal rectification ratio enhances first and then fades away gra…
Graphene is considered as a promising platform for detectors of high-frequency radiation up to the terahertz (THz) range due to graphene$'$s superior electron mobility. Previously it has been shown that graphene field effect transistors (FETs) exhibit room temperature broadband photoresponse to incoming THz radiation thanks to the thermoelectric and/or plasma wave rectification. Both effects exhibit similar functional dependences on the gate voltage and therefore it was found to be difficult to disentangle these contributions in the previous studies. In this letter, we report on combined exper…
We investigate nonlinear transport properties of quantum conductors in response to both electrical and thermal driving forces. Within scattering approach, we determine the nonequilibrium screening potential of a generic mesoscopic system and find that its response is dictated by particle and entropic injectivities which describe the charge and entropy transfer during transport. We illustrate our model analyzing the voltage and thermal rectification of a resonant tunneling barrier. Importantly, we discuss interaction induced contributions to the thermopower in the presence of large temperature …
Recent breakthroughs in quantum-dot circuit-quantum-electrodynamics (circuit-QED) systems are important both from a fundamental perspective and from the point of view of quantum photonic devices. However, understanding the applications of such setups as potential thermoelectric diodes and transistors has been missing. In this paper, via the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function approach, we show that cavity-coupled double quantum-dots can serve as excellent quantum thermoelectric diodes and transistors. Using an enhanced perturbation approach based on polaron-transformations, we find non-mon…
As one of the basic components of phononics, thermal diodes transmit heat current asymmetrically similar to electronic rectifiers and diodes in microelectronics. Heat can be conducted through them easily in one direction while being blocked in the other direction. In this work, we report an easily-fabricated mesoscale chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamond thermal diode without sharp temperature change driven by the gradient grain structure of CVD diamond membranes. We build a spectral model of diamond thermal conductivity with complete phonon dispersion relation to show significant thermal re…
We have used molecular dynamics to calculate the thermal conductivity of symmetric and asymmetric graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) of several nanometers in size (up to ~4 nm wide and ~10 nm long). For symmetric nanoribbons, the calculated thermal conductivity (e.g. ~2000 W/m-K @400K for a 1.5 nm {\times} 5.7 nm zigzag GNR) is on the similar order of magnitude of the experimentally measured value for graphene. We have investigated the effects of edge chirality and found that nanoribbons with zigzag edges have appreciably larger thermal conductivity than nanoribbons with armchair edges. For asymmetri…
This work explores different mechanisms that induce thermal rectification in the nanoscale. The presence of interacting energy channels combined with simple asymmetries is sufficient for promoting the desired behavior. We use simple quantum dot configurations, identifying the basic properties that enhance rectification for each case: the size of a quantum dot state space (which suggests the use of scaled up systems with many interacting channels), tunneling asymmetries due to coherent tunneling in a double quantum dot, or quantum interference in a triangular triple quantum dot. An efficient an…
We present a theoretical study of radiative heat transport in nonlinear solid-state quantum circuits. We give a detailed account of heat rectification effects, i.e. the asymmetry of heat current with respect to a reversal of the thermal gradient, in a system consisting of two reservoirs at finite temperatures coupled through a nonlinear resonator. We suggest an experimentally feasible superconducting circuit employing the Josephson nonlinearity to realize a controllable low temperature heat rectifier with a maximal asymmetry of the order of 10%. We also discover a parameter regime where the re…
We investigate the rectification of thermal fluctuations in a mesoscopic on-chip heat engine. The engine consists of a hot chaotic cavity capacitively coupled to a cold cavity which rectifies the excess noise and generates a directed current. The fluctuation-induced directed current depends on the energy asymmetry of the transmissions of the contacts of the cold cavity to the leads and is proportional to the temperature difference. We discuss the maximal power output of the heat engine and its efficiency.
We investigate the rectification of heat current carried by electrons through a double quantum dot (DQD) system under a temperature bias. The DQD can be realized by molecules such as suspended carbon nanotube and be described by the Anderson-Holstein model in presence of electron-phonon interaction. Strong electron-phonon interaction can lead to formation of polaronic states in which electronic states are dressed by phonon cloud. Dressed tunneling approximation (DTA), which is nonperturbative in dealing with strong electron-phonon interaction, is employed to obtain the heat current expression.…
Current understanding of thermal rectification asserts that the rectification ratio (R), which measures the relative heat flux between two ends of a nanostructure, is determined by its geometric asymmetry. The higher the asymmetry, the higher the R. However, by using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics method we have calculated thermal transport in Si nanocones as an example, the results show that such an understanding may be incorrect and R may not increase monotonically with geometric asymmetry. Rather, R exhibits a sharp reverse when the vertex angle (θ) of the nanocone is approximately 90°. …
We study the rectification of near-field radiative heat transfer between two InSb nano-particles due to the presence of non-reciprocal surface modes in a nearby InSb sample when an external magnetic field is applied and its dependence on the magnetic field strength. We reveal the spin-spin coupling mechanism of the localized particle resonances and the surface mode resonances which is substantiated by the directional heat flux in the given setup. We discuss further the interplay of the frequency shift, the propagation length, and local density of states on the strength and directionality of th…

We theoretically explore the behavior of thermal transport in the topological SQUIPT, in the linear and nonlinear regime. The device consists of a topological Josephson junction based on a two-dimensional topological insulator in contact with two superconducting leads, and a probe tunnel coupled to the topological edge states of the junction. We compare the performance of a normal metal and a graphene probe, showing that the topological SQUIPT behaves as a passive thermal rectifier and that it can reach a rectification coefficient of up to $~ 145\%$ with the normal metal probe. Moreover, the i…
We investigate nonlinear thermal transport properties of a single interacting quantum dot with two energy levels tunnel-coupled to two electrodes using nonequilibrium Green function method and Hartree-Fock decoupling approximation. In the case of asymmetric tunnel-couplings to two electrodes, for example, when the upper level of the quantum dot is open for transport, whereas the lower level is blocked, our calculations predict a strong asymmetry for the heat (energy) current, which shows that, the quantum dot system may act as a thermal rectifier in this specific situation.
We study the phenomenon of spin-current rectification in a one-dimensional XXZ spin chain in the presence of a thermal drive. In our model a pure spin current is generated by a temperature difference between two harmonic heat baths which in turn creates a spin voltage via the spin-Seebeck effect. Along with a local spin-current operator definition and the nonequilibrium modified Redfield solution we study the spin-rectification ratio as a function of system size and external magnetic field. Intriguing effects are observed at low temperatures such as oscillations with system size and high range…
By coupling the asymmetric three-terminal mesoscopic dielectric system with a temperature probe, at low temperature, the ballistic heat flux flow through the other two asymmetric terminals in the nonlinear response regime is studied based on the Landauer formulation of transport theory. The thermal rectification is attained at the quantum regime. It is a purely quantum effect and is determined by the dependence of the ratio $τ_{RC}(ω)/τ_{RL}(ω)$ on $ω$, the phonon's frequency. Where $τ_{RC}(ω)$ and $τ_{RL}(ω)$ are respectively the transmission coefficients from two asymmetric terminals to the …
We investigate the heat flow transport properties of a parallel-coupled double quantum-dot system connected to two reservoirs with a temperature bias in the Coulomb blockade regime. We demonstrate that the effects of thermal rectification and negative differential thermal conductance (NDTC) exist in this system and analyze the influences of energy level difference and Coulomb interaction on the thermal rectification and NDTC. We find that this system can achieve a high thermal rectification ratio and NDTC when the asymmetry factor of the system is enhanced.
We construct a scattering theory of weakly nonlinear thermoelectric transport through sub-micron scale conductors. The theory incorporates the leading nonlinear contributions in temperature and voltage biases to the charge and heat currents. Because of the finite capacitances of sub-micron scale conducting circuits, fundamental conservation laws such as gauge invariance and current conservation require special care to be preserved. We do this by extending the approach of Christen and Büttiker [Europhys. Lett. 35, 523 (1996)] to coupled charge and heat transport. In this way we write relations …
The impact of semiconductor surface roughness on the electrical and thermal contact resistances and thermoEMF of thermoelectric material (TEM)-metal transient contact layer is studied theoretically. The distribution of hollows and humps on the rough surface is simulated by the truncated Gaussian distribution. The impact of distribution parameters on the electrical contact resistance and thermoEMF of thermoelectric material-metal contact is studied.
It is illustrated that semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) embedded into an insulating matrix connected with metallic electrodes and some vacuum space can lead to significant thermal rectification effect. A multilevel Anderson model is used to investigate the thermal rectification properties of the multiple-QD junction. The charge and heat currents in the tunneling process are calculated via the Keldysh Green's function technique. We show that pronounced thermal rectification and negative differential thermal conductance (NDTC) behaviors can be observed for the multiple-QD junction with asymmetri…
We study heat conduction in (n, 0)/(2n, 0) intramolecular junctions by using molecular dynamics method. It is found that the heat conduction is asymmetric, namely, heat transports preferably in one direction. This phenomenon is also called thermal rectification. The rectification is weakly dependent on the detailed structure of connection part, but is strongly dependent on the temperature gradient. We also study the effect of the tube radius and intramolecular junction length on the rectification. Our study shows that the tensile stress can increase rectification. The physical mechanism of the…
In this paper, heat flux in graphene nano ribbons has been studied by using molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that the heat flux runs preferentially along the direction of decreasing width, which demonstrates significant thermal rectification effect in the asymmetric graphene ribbons. The dependence of rectification ratio on the vertex angle and the length are also discussed. Compared to the carbon nanotube based one-dimensional thermal rectifier, graphene nano ribbons have much higher rectification ratio even in large scale. Our results demonstrate that asymmetric graphene ribbon mi…
In this paper, we study the thermal rectification in asymmetric U-shaped graphene flakes by using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The graphene flakes are composed by a beam and two arms. It is found that the heat flux runs preferentially from the wide arm to the narrow arm which indicates a strong rectification effect. The dependence of the rectification ratio upon the heat flux, the length and the width of the beam, the length and width of the two arms are studied. The result suggests a possible route to manage heat dissipation in U-shaped graphene based nanoelectronic devices.
This mini-review addresses a bedrock problem for the advance of phononics: the building of feasible and efficient thermal diodes. We revisit investigations in classical and quantum systems. For the classical anharmonic chains of oscillators, the most used model for the study of heat conduction in insulating solids, we recall the ubiquitous occurrence of thermal rectification in graded systems, and we show that the match between graded structures and long range interactions is an efficient mechanism to increase the rectification factor. For the cases of genuine quantum models, we present the sp…
Quantum thermal transport in two-quantum-dot system with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DM interaction) has been studied. The sign of thermal rectification can be controlled through changing the energy splitting or the DM interaction strength. The anisotropic term in the system can also affect the sign of rectification. Compared with other proposals [Phys. Rev. B 80, 172301 (2009)], our model can offer larger rectification efficiency and show the potential application in designing the polarity-controllable thermal diode with a small size system (N=2). Moreover, quantum correlations of two-…
We study in this article how heat can be exchanged between two level systems (TLS) each of them being coupled to a thermal reservoir. Calculation are performed solving a master equation for the density matrix using the Born markov-approximation. We analyse the conditions for which a thermal diode and a thermal transistor can be obtained as well as their optimization.
Rectification of heat flow via a thermal diode is not only of fundamental interest, but can also enable a range of novel applications in thermal management and energy conversion. However, despite decades of extensive research, large rectification ratios of practical importance have yet to be demonstrated. Here, we theoretically achieve giant rectification ratios (3 to almost 5 orders of magnitude) by leveraging near-field radiative thermal transport between two parallel planes. Guided by a rational design approach centering on the electromagnetic local density of states (LDOS), we employ a thi…
Thermal rectification phenomenon is a manifestation of an asymmetry in the heat flux when the temperature difference between two interacting thermal reservoirs is reversed. In this letter, we present a far-field radiative thermal rectifier based on high temperature superconducting materials with a rectification ratio up to $80%$. This value is among the highest reported in literature. Two configurations are examined : a superconductor (Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$) exchanging heat with 1) a black body and 2) another superconductor, YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ in this case. The first configuration shows a …
We discuss thermal rectification and thermoelectric energy conversion from the perspective of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and dynamical systems theory. After preliminary considerations on the dynamical foundations of the phenomenological Fourier law in classical and quantum mechanics, we illustrate ways to control the phononic heat flow and design thermal diodes. Finally, we consider the coupled transport of heat and charge and discuss several general mechanisms for optimizing the figure of merit of thermoelectric efficiency.
We present a comprehensive and systematic study of thermal rectification in a prototypical low-dimensional quantum system -- a non-linear resonator: we identify necessary conditions to observe thermal rectification and we discuss strategies to maximize it. We focus, in particular, on the case where anharmonicity is very strong and the system reduces to a qubit. In the latter case, we derive general upper bounds on rectification which hold in the weak system-bath coupling regime, and we show how the Lamb shift can be exploited to enhance rectification. We then go beyond the weak-coupling regime…
We theoretically investigate heat transport in hybrid normal metal-superconductor (NS) nanojunctions focusing on the effect of thermal rectification. We show that the heat diode effect in the junction strongly depends on the transmissivity and the nature of the NS contact. Thermal rectification efficiency can reach up to 123% for a fully-transmissive ballistic junction and up to 84% in diffusive NS contacts. Both values exceed the rectification efficiency of a NIS tunnel junction (I stands for an insulator) by a factor close to 5 and 3, respectively. Furthermore, we show that for NS point-cont…
We consider a small itinerant ferromagnet exposed to an external magnetic field and strongly driven by a thermally induced spin current. For this model, we derive the quasi-classical equations of motion for the magnetization where the effects of a dynamical non-equilibrium distribution function are taken into account self-consistently. We obtain the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation supplemented by a spin-transfer torque term of Slonczewski form. We identify a regime of persistent precessions in which we find an enhancement of the thermoelectric current by the pumping current.
We investigate charge and energy transport in a three-terminal quantum Hall conductor. The peculiar properties of chiral propagation along the edges of the sample have important consequences on the response to thermal biases. Based on the separation of charge and heat flows, thermoelectric conversion and heat rectification can be manipulated by tuning the scattering at gate-modulated constrictions. Chiral motion in a magnetic field allows for a different behaviour of left- and right-moving carriers giving rise to thermal rectification by redirecting the heat flows. We propose our system both a…
We numerically study the disorder effect on the thermoelectric and thermal transport for bilayer graphene under a strong perpendicular magnetic field. In the unbiased case, we find that the thermoelectric transport has similar properties as in the monolayer graphene, i.e., the Nernst signal has a peak at the central Landau level (LL) with the value of the order of $k_B/e$ and changes sign near other LLs while the thermopower has an opposite behavior. We attribute this to the coexistence of particle and hole LLs around the Dirac point. When a finite interlayer bias is applied and a band gap is …
Nonreciprocal transport phenomena indicate that the forward and backward flows differ, and are attributed to broken inversion symmetry. In this paper, we study the nonreciprocity of a thermal and thermoelectric transport of electronic systems resulting from inversion-symmetry-broken crystal structures. The nonlinear electric, thermoelectric, and thermal conductivities are derived up to the second order in an electric field and a temperature gradient by using the Boltzmann equation with the relaxation time approximation. All the second-order conductivities appearing in this paper are described …
The thermoelectric properties of quantum dot arrays (QDAs) embedded in nanowires connected to electrodes are studied theoretically in the Coulomb blockade regime. A Hurbbard-Anderson model is used to simulate the electronic contribution to thermoelectric proper- ties of a QDA junction system. The electrical conductance, Seebeck coefficient, and electron thermal conductance are calculated by both the Keldysh Green function method and the mean-field approach. The phonon thermal conductivities are calculated by using the equation of phonon radiative transfer method. In the Coulomb blockade regime…
We performed Boltzmann transport calculation to obtain the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, electronic thermal conductivity, and thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) for Dirac systems. We found an enhancement of ZT due to the gap opening. When the phonon thermal conductivity is small enough, the optimum ZT in gapped Dirac system can be larger than 1, which is preferable for thermoelectric applications.
We provide a theoretical framework for the development of a solid-state thermal rectifier through a confinement in the available population of phonons on one side of an asymmetrically graded film stack. Using a modification of the phonon gas model to account for phonon filtering and population confinement, we demonstrate that for an ideal material, with low phonon anharmonicity, significant thermal rectification can be achieved even in the absence of ballistic phonon transport. This formalism is used to illustrate thermal rectification in a thin-film of diamond (1-5 nm) graded to dimensions > …
A detailed investigation of the non-equilibrium steady-state electric and thermoelectric transport properties of a quantum dot coupled to the normal metallic and s-wave superconducting reservoirs (N-QD-S) are provided within the Coulomb blockade regime. Using non-equilibrium Keldysh Green's function formalism, initially, various model parameter dependence of thermoelectric transport properties are analysed within the linear response regime. It is observed that the single-particle tunnelling close to the superconducting gap edge can generate a relatively large thermopower and figure of merit. M…
