We present results from the analysis of WIYN pODI imaging of 23 ultra-compact high-velocity clouds (UCHVCs), which were identified in the ALFALFA HI survey as possible dwarf galaxies in or near the Local Group. To search for a resolved stellar population associated with the HI gas in these objects, we carried out a series of steps designed to identify stellar overdensities in our optical images. We identify five objects that are likely stellar counterparts to the UCHVCs, at distances of $\sim 350$ kpc to $\sim 1.6$ Mpc. Two of the counterparts were already described in Janesh et al. (2015) and Janesh et al. (2017); the estimated distance and detection significance for one of them changed in the final analysis of the full pODI data set. At their estimated distances, the detected objects have HI masses from $2 \times 10^4$ to $3 \times 10^6$ Msun, $M_V$ from -1.4 to -7.1, and stellar masses from $4 \times 10^2$ to $4 \times 10^5$ Msun. None of the objects shows evidence of a young stellar population. Their properties would make the UCHVCs some of the most extreme objects in and around the Local Group, comparable to ultra faint dwarf galaxies in their stellar populations, but with significant gas content. Such objects probe the extreme end of the galaxy mass function, and provide a testbed for theories regarding the baryonic feedback processes that impact star formation and galaxy evolution in this low-mass regime.
Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are objects which have very extended morphology and faint central surface brightness. Most UDGs are discovered in galaxy clusters and groups, but also some are found in low density environments. The diffuse morphology and faint surface brightness make them difficult to distinguish from the sky background. Several previous works have suggested that at least some UDGs are consistent with exponential surface brightness profiles (Sérsic n ~ 1). The surface brightness of exponential disks is enhanced in edge-on systems, so searching for edge-on systems may be an effici…
We report on initial results from a campaign to obtain optical imaging of a sample of Ultra Compact High Velocity Clouds (UCHVCs) discovered by the ALFALFA neutral hydrogen (HI) survey. UCHVCs are sources with velocities and sizes consistent with their being low-mass dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume, but without optical counterparts in existing catalogs. We are using the WIYN 3.5-m telescope and pODI camera to image these objects and search for an associated stellar population. In this paper, we present our observational strategy and method for searching for resolved stellar counterparts to …
We present results from deep HI and optical imaging of AGC 229101, an unusual HI source detected at v$_{\rm helio}$ = 7116 km/s in the ALFALFA survey. Initially classified as a candidate "dark" source because it lacks a clear optical counterpart in SDSS or DSS2 imaging, AGC 229101 has $10^{9.31\pm0.05}$ solar masses of HI, but an HI line width of only 43$\pm$9 km/s. Low resolution WSRT imaging and higher resolution VLA B-array imaging show that the source is significantly elongated, stretching over a projected length of ~80 kpc. The HI imaging resolves the source into two parts of roughly equa…
We measure the r-band galaxy luminosity function (LF) across environments over the redshift range 0<$z$<0.107 using the SDSS. We divide our sample into galaxies residing in large scale voids (void galaxies) and those residing in denser regions (wall galaxies). The best fitting Schechter parameters for void galaxies are: log$Φ^*$= -3.40$\pm$0.03 log(Mpc$^{-3}$), $M^*$= -19.88$\pm$0.05, and $α$=-1.20$\pm$0.02. For wall galaxies, the best fitting parameters are: log$Φ^*$=-2.86$\pm$0.02 log(Mpc$^{-3}$), $M^*$=-20.80$\pm$0.03, and $α$=-1.16$\pm$0.01. We find a shift in the characteristic magnitude,…
We present results from ground-based optical imaging of a low-mass dwarf galaxy discovered by the ALFALFA 21-cm HI survey. Broadband (BVR) data obtained with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) are used to construct color-magnitude diagrams of the galaxy's stellar population down to V_0 ~ 25. We also use narrowband H-alpha imaging from the KPNO 2.1-m telescope to identify an HII region in the galaxy. We use these data to constrain the distance to the galaxy to be between 1.5 and 2.0 Mpc. This places Leo P within the Local Volume but beyond the Local Group. Its pro…
Ultra-diffuse galaxies have generated significant interest due to their large optical extents and low optical surface brightnesses, which challenge galaxy formation models. Here we present resolved synthesis observations of 12 HI-bearing ultra-diffuse galaxies (HUDs) from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), as well as deep optical imaging from the WIYN 3.5-meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. We present the data processing and images, including total intensity HI maps and HI velocity fields. The HUDs show ordered gas distributions and evidence of rotation, important prereq…
We report the discovery and follow-up observations of a system of three objects identified by the ALFALFA extragalactic HI survey, cataloged as (almost) dark extragalactic sources, i.e., extragalactic HI detections with no discernible counterpart in publicly available, wide-field, imaging surveys. We have obtained deep optical imaging with WIYN pODI and HI synthesis maps with WSRT of the HI1232+20 system. The source with the highest HI flux has a newly discovered ultra-low surface brightness (LSB) optical counterpart associated with it, while the other two sources have no detected optical coun…
We report on the detection at $>$98% confidence of an optical counterpart to AGC 249525, an Ultra-Compact High Velocity Cloud (UCHVC) discovered by the ALFALFA blind neutral hydrogen survey. UCHVCs are compact, isolated HI clouds with properties consistent with their being nearby low-mass galaxies, but without identified counterparts in extant optical surveys. Analysis of the resolved stellar sources in deep $g$- and $i$-band imaging from the WIYN pODI camera reveals a clustering of possible Red Giant Branch stars associated with AGC 249525 at a distance of 1.64$\pm$0.45 Mpc. Matching our opti…
Low-surface-brightness galaxies(LSBGs) are defined as galaxies that are fainter than dark night sky and are important for studying our universe. Particularly, edge-on galaxies are useful for the study of rotational velocity and dynamical properties of galaxies. Hence here we focus on searching for edge-on LSBGs. In order to find these edge-on dim galaxies, a series of effects caused by inclination, including the surface brightness profile, internal extinction, and scale length, have been corrected. In this work, we present a catalog of 281 edge-on LSBG candidates, which are selected from the c…
We present the fourth catalog of serendipitously discovered compact extragalactic emission-line sources -- H$α$ Dots. A total of 454 newly discovered objects are included in the current survey list. These objects have been detected in searches of moderately deep narrow-band images acquired for the ALFALFA H$α$ project (Van Sistine et al. 2016). The catalog of H-alpha Dots presented in the current paper was derived from searches carried out using ALFALFA H$α$ images obtained with the KPNO 2.1 m telescope. This results in a substantially deeper sample of Dots compared to our previous lists, whic…
I investigate whether it is possible to reconcile the recent ALFALFA observation that the neutral hydrogen (HI) mass function (HIMF) across different galactic densities has the same, non-flat, faint-end slope, with the observations of isolated galaxies and many galaxy groups that show their HIMFs to have flat faint-end slopes. I find that a fairly simple model in which the position of the knee in the mass function of each individual group is allowed to vary is able to account for both of these observations. If this model reflects reality, the ALFALFA result points to an interesting `conspiracy…
We present a catalog of 59 ultra-compact high velocity clouds (UCHVCs) extracted from the 40% complete ALFALFA HI-line survey. The ALFALFA UCHVCs have median flux densities of 1.34 Jy km/s, median angular diameters of 10', and median velocity widths of 23 km/s. We show that the full UCHVC population cannot easily be associated with known populations of high velocity clouds. Of the 59 clouds presented here, only 11 are also present in the compact cloud catalog extracted from the commensal GALFA-HI survey, demonstrating the utility of this separate dataset and analysis. Based on their sky distri…
We present results from WIYN pODI imaging of Lacerta I (And XXXI), a satellite dwarf galaxy discovered in the outskirts of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) in Pan-STARRS1 survey data. Our deep, wide-field $g,i$ photometry reaches $\sim$3 magnitudes fainter than the photometry in the Pan-STARRS1 discovery paper and allows us to trace the stellar population of Lac I beyond two half-light radii from the galaxy center. We measure a Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) distance for Lac I of $(m-M)_0=24.44\pm0.11$ mag (773$\pm$40 kpc, or 264$\pm$6 kpc from M31), which is consistent with the Pan-STARRS1 dist…
The discovery of a previously unknown 21cm HI line source identified as an ultra-compact high velocity cloud in the ALFALFA survey is reported. The HI detection is barely resolved by the Arecibo 305m telescope ~4' beam and has a narrow HI linewidth (HPFW of 24 km/s). Further HI observations at Arecibo and with the VLA corroborate the ALFALFA HI detection, provide an estimate of the HI radius, ~1' at the 5 x 10^19 cm^-2 isophote, and show the cloud to exhibit rotation with an amplitude of ~9.0 +/- 1.5 km/s. In other papers, Rhode et al. (2013) show the HI source to have a resolved stellar count…

We present the second catalog of serendipitously discovered compact extragalactic emission-line sources -- H$α$ Dots. These objects have been discovered in searches of moderately deep narrow-band images acquired for the ALFALFA H$α$ project (Van Sistine et al. 2016). In addition to cataloging 119 new H$α$ Dots, we also present follow-up spectral data for the full sample. These spectra allow us to confirm the nature of these objects as true extragalactic emission-line objects, to classify them in terms of activity type (star forming or AGN), and to identify the emission line via which they were…
The Survey of HI in Extremely Low-mass Dwarfs (SHIELD) includes a volumetrically complete sample of 82 gas-rich dwarfs with M_HI~<10^7.2 Msun selected from the ALFALFA survey. We are obtaining extensive follow-up observations of the SHIELD galaxies to study their gas, stellar, and chemical content, and to better understand galaxy evolution at the faint end of the HI mass function. Here, we investigate the properties of 30 SHIELD galaxies using Hubble Space Telescope imaging of their resolved stars and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope observations of their neutral hydrogen. We measure tip o…
The Survey of HI in Extremely Low-mass Dwarf galaxies (SHIELD) is an on-going multi-wavelength program to characterize the gas, star formation, and evolution in gas-rich, very low-mass galaxies. The galaxies were selected from the first ~10% of the HI ALFALFA survey based on their inferred low HI mass and low baryonic mass, and all systems have recent star formation. Thus, the SHIELD sample probes the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function for star-forming galaxies. Here, we measure the distances to the 12 SHIELD galaxies to be between 5-12 Mpc by applying the tip of the red giant method …
We report five Local Volume dwarf galaxies (two of which are presented here for the first time) uncovered during a comprehensive archival search for optical counterparts to ultra-compact high velocity clouds (UCHVCs). The UCHVC population of HI clouds are thought to be candidate gas-rich, low mass halos at the edge of the Local Group and beyond, but no comprehensive search for stellar counterparts to these systems has been presented. Careful visual inspection of all publicly available optical and ultraviolet imaging at the position of the UCHVCs revealed six blue, diffuse counterparts with a m…
We look at the contribution of different galaxy populations to the atomic hydrogen (HI) mass function (HIMF) and the HI density parameter, $Ω_{\text{HI}}$, in the local Universe. Our analysis is based on a sample of 7857 HI-selected galaxies selected from a volume common to the SDSS and ALFALFA surveys (40$\%$ catalog -- $α.40$). We define different populations of galaxies in the color(u-r)-magnitude($M_{\text{r}}$) plane and compute the HIMF for each of them. Additionally we compute the HIMF for dark galaxies; these are undetected in SDSS and represent $\sim 2\%$ of the total sample. We find …
We investigate the spatial extent and structure of the Pegasus dwarf irregular galaxy using deep, wide-field, multicolour CCD photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and new deep HI observations. We study an area of ~0.6 square degrees centred on the Pegasus dwarf that was imaged by SDSS. Using effective filtering in colour-magnitude space we reduce the contamination by foreground Galactic field stars and increase significantly the contrast in the outer regions of the Pegasus dwarf. Our extended surface photometry, reaches down to a surface brightness magnitude mu_r~32 mag/sq.arcse…
We present results from multiwavelength observations of the galaxy NGC5005. We use new neutral hydrogen (HI) observations from the Very Large Array to examine the neutral gas morphology and kinematics. We find an HI disk with a well-behaved flat rotation curve in the radial range 20\arcsec-140\arcsec. Ionized gas observations from the SparsePak integral field unit on the WIYN 3.5m telescope provide kinematics for the central 70\arcsec. We use both the SparsePak and HI velocity fields to derive a rotation curve for NGC5005. Deep 3.6μm observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope probe the fain…
We present new high-resolution HI spectral line imaging of Coma P, the brightest HI source in the system HI 1232$+$20. This extremely low surface brightness galaxy was first identified in the ALFALFA survey as an "(Almost) Dark" object: a clearly extragalactic HI source with no obvious optical counterpart in existing optical survey data (although faint ultraviolet emission was detected in archival GALEX imaging). Using a combination of data from the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, we investigate the HI morphology and kinematics at a variety of phys…
The two sources AGC 226178 and NGVS 3543, an extremely faint, clumpy, blue stellar system and a low surface brightness dwarf spheroidal, are adjacent systems in the direction of the Virgo cluster. Both have been studied in detail previously, with it being suggested that they are unrelated normal dwarf galaxies or that NGVS 3543 recently lost its gas through ram pressure stripping, and that AGC 226178 formed from this stripped gas. However, with HST ACS imaging we demonstrate that the stellar population of NGVS 3543 is inconsistent with being at the distance of the Virgo cluster, and that it is…
The Survey of HI in Extremely Low-mass Dwarfs (SHIELD) is an on-going multi-wavelength program to characterize the gas, star formation, and evolution in gas-rich, very low-mass galaxies that populate the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. The galaxies were selected from the first ~10% of the HI ALFALFA survey based on their low HI mass and low baryonic mass. Here, we measure the star-formation properties from optically resolved stellar populations for 12 galaxies using a color-magnitude diagram fitting technique. We derive lifetime average star-formation rates (SFRs), recent SFRs, st…
We present neutral hydrogen (HI) imaging observations with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope of AGC198606, an HI cloud discovered in the ALFALFA 21cm survey. This object is of particular note as it is located 16 km/s and 1.2 degrees from the gas-bearing ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Leo T while having a similar HI linewidth and approximately twice the flux density. The HI imaging observations reveal a smooth, undisturbed HI morphology with a full extent of 23'x16' at the 5x10^18 atoms cm^-2 level. The velocity field of AGC198606 shows ordered motion with a gradient of ~25 km/s across ~20'. T…
Ultraviolet observations of the QSO 3C 263 (zem = 0.652) with COS and FUSE reveal O VI absorption systems at z = 0.06342 and 0.14072 . WIYN multi-object spectrograph observations provide information about the galaxies associated with the absorbers. The multi-phase system at z = 0.06342 traces cool photoionized gas and warm collisionally ionized gas associated with a L ~ 0.31L* compact spiral emission line galaxy with an impact parameter of 63 kpc. The cool photoionized gas in the absorber is well modeled with log U ~ -2.6, log N(H) ~17.8, log n(H) ~ -3.3 and [Si/H] = -0.14\pm0.23. The collisio…
We present dark-matter minihalo models for the Ultra-Compact High Velocity HI Clouds (UCHVCs) recently discovered in the 21 cm ALFALFA survey. We assume gravitational confinement of 10^4 K HI gas by flat-cored dark-matter subhalos within the Local Group. We show that for flat cores, typical (median) tidally-stripped cosmological subhalos at redshift z=0 have dark-matter masses of ~10^7 M_{sun} within the central 300 pc (independent of total halo mass), consistent with the "Strigari mass scale" observed in low-luminosity dwarf galaxies. Flat-cored subhalos also resolve the mass-discrepancy betw…
