We provide a simple UV theory for a Dirac dark matter with a massless Abelian gauge boson. We introduce a single fermion transforming as the $\bf{16}$ representation in the SO(10)$'$ gauge group, which is assumed to be spontaneously broken to SU(5)$'\times$U(1)$'$. The SU(5)$'$ gauge interaction becomes strong at an intermediate scale and then we obtain a light composite Dirac fermion with U(1)$'$ gauge interaction at the low-energy scale. Its thermal relic can explain the observed amount of dark matter consistently with other cosmological and astrophysical constraints. We discuss that a nonzero kinetic mixing between the U(1)$'$ gauge boson and the Hypercharge gauge boson is allowed and the temperature of the visible sector and the dark matter sector can be equal to each other.
We revisit constraints on dark matter that is charged under a $U(1)$ gauge group in the dark sector, decoupled from Standard Model forces. We find that the strongest constraints in the literature are subject to a number of mitigating factors. For instance, the naive dark matter thermalization timescale in halos is corrected by saturation effects that slow down isotropization for modest ellipticities. The weakened bounds uncover interesting parameter space, making models with weak-scale charged dark matter viable, even with electromagnetic strength interaction. This also leads to the intriguing…
The formation of stable or meta-stable bound states can dramatically affect the phenomenology of dark matter (DM). Although the capture into bound states via emission of a vector is known to be significant, the capture via scalar emission suffers from cancellations that render it important only within narrow parameter space. While this is true for neutral scalar mediators, here we show that bound-state formation via emission of a charged scalar can be extremely significant. To this end, we consider DM charged under a dark $U(1)$ force and coupled also to a light complex scalar that is charged …
We perform a general 1-loop analysis by adding extra matter to the SM content, as well as by allowing a non-standard U(1)Y normalization in order to achieve unification. We find numerous solutions with U(1)Y only charged extra matter and unification scale of the order of MU=10^{16} GeV, or with SU(2) charged extra matter with lower MU. We next identify the SM extra matter as originating from the breaking of SO(10) either through the Pati-Salam group SU(4)xSU(2)LxSU(2)R or the flipped SU(5). In both cases, unification can be achieved with a rather minimal extra content. Contrary to the one-step…
We obtain the mass spectrum and the Higgs self-coupling of the two Higgs doublet model (THDM) in an alternative unification scenario where the parameters of the Higgs potential $λ_i$ ($i=1,2,3,4,5$) are determined by imposing their unification with the electroweak gauge couplings. An attractive feature of this scenario is the possibility to determine the Higgs boson masses by evolving the $λ_i$,s from the electroweak-Higgs unification scale $M_{GH}$ down to the electroweak scale. The unification condition for the gauge ($g_1,g_2$) and Higgs couplings is written as $g_1=g_2=f(λ_i)$, where $g_1=…
The unification of the quark and charged lepton flavor structures is revisited using the tools of Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV). Under that framework, we first identify a unique point in parameter space where flavor universality is maximally violated. Though from the point of view of the usual polynomial MFV expansions, standing close to that point would require unacceptable fine-tunings, it is automatically attained with infinite geometric MFV series. Remarkably, this peculiar point is precisely where the charged lepton Yukawa coupling can be expressed naturally in terms of those of the quar…
We use Swampland principles to theoretically disfavor regions of the parameter space of dark matter and other darkly charged particles that may exist. The Festina Lente bound, the analogue of the Weak-Gravity conjecture in de Sitter, places constraints on the mass and charge of dark particles, which here we show cover regions in parameter space that are currently allowed by observations. As a consequence, a broad set of new ultra-light particles are in the Swampland, independently of their cosmic abundance, showing the complementarity of Quantum Gravity limits with laboratory and astrophysical…
In this work we propose a renormalizable model based on the $SU(5)$ gauge group where neutrino mass originates at the two-loop level without extending the fermionic content of the Standard Model (SM). Unlike the conventional $SU(5)$ models, in this proposed scenario, neutrino mass is intertwined with the charged fermion masses. In addition to correctly reproducing the SM charged fermion masses and mixings, neutrino mass is generated at the quantum level, hence naturally explains the smallness of neutrino masses. In this set-up, we provide examples of gauge coupling unification that simultaneou…
We present an SU(9) model of family unification with three light chiral families, and a natural hierarchy of charged fermion masses and mixings. The existence of singlet right handed neutrions with masses about two orders of magnitude smaller than the GUT scale, as needed to understand the light neutrinos masses via the see-saw mechanism, is compelling in our model.
We show that gauge coupling unification is realized with a greater accuracy in the presence of a massless hidden photon which has a large kinetic mixing with hypercharge. We solve the renormalization group equations at two-loop level and find that the GUT unification scale is around $10^{16.5}$ GeV which sufficiently suppresses the proton decay rate, and that the unification is essentially determined by the kinetic mixing only, and it is rather insensitive to the hidden gauge coupling or the presence of vector-like matter fields charged under U(1)$_H$ and/or SU(5). Matter fields charged under …
A simple model of dark matter contains a light Dirac field charged under a hidden U(1) gauge symmetry. When a chiral matter content in a strong dynamics satisfies the t'Hooft anomaly matching condition, a massless baryon is a natural candidate of the light Dirac field. One realization is the same matter content as the standard SU(5)$\times$U(1)$_{(B-L)}$ grand unified theory. We propose a chiral [SU(5)$\times$U(1)]$^4$ gauge theory as a unified model of the SM and DM sectors. The low-energy dynamics, which was recently studied, is governed by the hidden U(1)$_4$ gauge interaction and the third…
The non-supersymmetric SU(5) model can accommodate heavy neutrinos and gauge coupling unification when augmented with an adjoint fermionic multiplet 24_F. Among the most important phenomenological implications of the model is the prediction of light fermions and scalars, charged under the SU(2) gauge group, in the reach of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In this talk, we report on the recent calculation of the correlation function between the mass scale of the new electroweak multiplets and the gauge coupling unification scale at three loop accuracy.
We present a minimal left-right dark matter framework that can simultaneously explain the recently observed 3.55 keV X-ray line from several galaxy clusters and gauge coupling unification at high energy scale. Adopting a minimal dark matter strategy, we consider both left and right handed triplet fermionic dark matter candidates which are stable by virtue of a remnant $\mathcal{Z}_2\simeq (-1)^{B-L}$ symmetry arising after the spontaneous symmetry breaking of left-right gauge symmetry to that of the standard model. A scalar bitriplet field is incorporated whose first role is to allow radiative…
We investigate the possibility of generating the $μ$-term in the MSSM by the condensation of a field that is a singlet under the SM gauge group but charged under an additional family-independent $U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry. We attempt to do so while preserving the gauge coupling unification of the MSSM. For this, we find that SM non-singlet exotics must be present in the spectrum. We also prove that the pure $U(1)_X$ anomalies can always be solved with rationally charged fields, but that a large number of SM singlets are often required. For $U(1)_X$ charges that are consistent with an embedding of…
We study the properties and production mechanisms of color-octet scalars at the LHC. We focus on the single production of both charged and neutral members of an (8,2)_1/2 doublet through bottom quark initial states. These channels provide a window to the underlying Yukawa structure of the scalar sector. Color-octet scalars naturally appear in grand unified theories based on the SU(5) gauge symmetry. In the context of adjoint SU(5) these fields are expected to be light to satisfy constraints coming from unification and proton decay, and may have TeV-scale masses. One combination of their coupli…
We consider non-canonical embeddings of the MSSM in high-dimensional orbifold GUTs based on the gauge symmetry SU(N), N=5,6,7,8. The hypercharge normalization factor k_Y can either have unique non-canonical values, such as 23/21 in a six-dimensional SU(7) model, or may lie in a (continuous) interval. Gauge coupling unification and gauge-Yukawa unification can be realized in these models by introducing new particles with masses in the TeV range which may be found at the LHC. In one such example there exist color singlet fractionally charged states.
We review some properties of Bilinear R-Parity Violating models: simple extensions of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model motivated by spontaneous breaking of R-Parity. We concentrate on the relaxation of the bounds on the charged Higgs mass imposed by the measurement of B(b -> s gamma), the effect on the mass of the lightest neutral Higgs boson, the radiative breaking of the electroweak symmetry, the unification of bottom and tau Yukawa couplings, and the relation of these phenomena to the radiatively generated tau-neutrino mass.
We reexamine the dynamical generation of mass for fermions charged under various Lie groups with equal charge and mass at a high Grand Unification scale, extending the Renormalization Group Equations in the perturbative regime to two-loops and matching to the Dyson-Schwinger Equations in the strong coupling regime.
We show that one can explain the neutral and charged anomalies in B-meson decays in the minimal theory for quark-lepton unification. The implications for flavor violating processes are discussed in detail. Strikingly, experimental observations suggest that the unification of quarks and leptons could be realized below the ${\cal O}(10^2)$ TeV scale.
We explore the possibility of unification of gauge couplings near the Planck scale in models of extended technicolor. We observe that models of the form G X SU(3)_c X SU(2)_L X U(1)_Y cannot be realized, due to the presence of massless neutral Goldstone bosons (axions) and light charged pseudo-Goldstone bosons; thus, unification of the known forces near the Planck scale cannot be achieved. The next simplest possibility, G X SU(4)_{PS} X SU(2)_L X U(1)_{T_{3R}}, cannot lead to unification of the Pati-Salam and weak gauge groups near the Planck scale. However, superstring theory provides relatio…
Assuming three light neutrinos and the see-saw mechanism we present a semiquantitative model of fermion masses based on (SUSY) SU(5) and abelian horizontal charges. A good description of the observed pattern of quark and lepton masses is obtained. For neutrinos we naturally obtain widely split masses and large atmospheric neutrino mixing as a consequence of SU(5)-related asymmetric mass matrices for d quarks and charged leptons.
We describe the Anti-Grand Unification Model (AGUT) and the Multiple Point Principle (MPP) used to calculate the values of the Standard Model gauge coupling constants in the theory, from the requirement of the existence of degenerate vacua. The application of the MPP to the pure Standard Model predicts the existence of a second minimum of the Higgs potential close to the cut-off, which we take to be the Planck scale, giving our Standard Model predictions for the top quark and Higgs masses: $M_t = 173 \pm 5$ GeV and $M_H = 135 \pm 9$ GeV. We also discuss mass protection by chiral charges and pr…
We present a new scenario for gauge coupling unification in flipped SU(5) string models, which identifies the $M_{32}$ scale of SU(3) and SU(2) unification with the empirical $M_{\rm LEP}\sim10^{15-16}$~GeV scale, and the $M_{51}$ scale of SU(5) and U(1) unification with the theoretical $M_{\rm string}\sim5\times10^{17}$~GeV string unification scale. The vacuum shift necessary for the cancellation of the anomalous $\rm U_A(1)$ and an SU(4) hidden sector with fractionally-charged particles, play a crucial role in the dynamical determination of all intermediate mass scales in this scenario.
In the dynamical gauge-Higgs unification the 4D Higgs field is unified with gauge fields and the electroweak symmetry is dynamically broken by the Hosotani mechanism. Interesting phenomenology is obtained in the Randall-Sundrum warped spacetime. (i) The Higgs boson mass is predicted at the LHC energies. (ii) The hierarchy in the fermion mass spectrum is naturally explained. (iii) Tiny violation of the universality in the charged current interactions is predicted. (iv) Yukawa couplings of quarks and leptons are suppressed compared with those in the standard model. (v) $WWH$, $ZZH$ couplings are…
In light of null results from New Physics searches at the LHC, we look at unification of the gauge couplings as a model-building principle. As a first step, we consider extensions of the Standard Model with vector-like fermions. We present a comprehensive list of spectra that feature fermions in two distinct $SU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ representations, in which precise gauge coupling unification is achieved. We derive upper and lower limits on vector-like masses from proton decay measurements, running of the strong gauge coupling, heavy stable charged particle searches, and electrowea…
The idea of unifying quarks and leptons in a gauge symmetry is very appealing. However, such an unification gives rise to leptoquark type gauge bosons for which current collider limits push their masses well beyond the TeV scale. We present a model in the framework of extra dimensions which breaks such quark-lepton unification symmetry via compactification at the TeV scale. These color triplet leptoquark gauge bosons, as well as the new quarks present in the model, can be produced at the LHC with distinctive final state signatures. These final state signals include high p_T multi-jets and mult…
WIMP dark matter and gauge coupling unification are considered in an R-parity violating MSSM with vector-like matter. Dark matter is contained in an additional vector-like SU(2)$_L$ doublet which possesses a new U(1) gauge symmetry. The Higgs fields are extended to be in a ${\bf 5\oplus \bar{5}}$ representation of SU(5). The stability of dark matter is a result of gauge symmetries, and the mass of the dark matter particle is between (1.1-1.5) TeV. Dark matter has a very small cross section with nucleis, thus the model is consistent with current dark matter direct detection experiments such as …
Some of basic problems in neutrino physics such as new energy scales, the enormous gap between neutrino masses and the lightest charged fermion mass, possible existance of sterile neutrinos in eV mass range are studied in the local gauge group $SU_{L}(4)\times U(1)$ for electroweak unification, which does not contain fermions with exotic electric charges. It is shown that neutrino mass spectrum can be decoupled from that of the other fermions. Further normal seesaw mechanism for neutrinos, with right handed neutrino Majorana masses to be of order $M\gg M_{\text{weak}}$ as well a new eV-scale c…
The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) mixing matrix and flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNC's) in the quark sector are examined in the GUT inspired $SO(5) \times U(1) \times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification in which the 4D Higgs boson is identified with the Aharonov-Bohm phase in the fifth dimension. Gauge invariant brane interactions play an important role for the flavor mixing in the charged-current weak interactions. The CKM matrix is reproduced except that the up quark mass needs to be larger than the observed one. FCNC's are naturally suppressed as a consequence of the gauge invariance, wi…
We examine the possibility of measuring the three gauge couplings at high scales at the LHC, in order to see the first steps as they run toward Grand Unification at much higher energies. Using the MSSM with sparticle masses of several hundred GeV as an example of a theory in which the couplings do unify at very high energies, we find that the processes pp->lv, pp->l+l- and pp->gamma+j can be useful to discriminate the SM from the MSSM with masses at the few hundred GeV scale, and determine that the couplings are converging at better than the SM prediction toward the GUT scale. Such measurement…
A natural model of realizing the effective supersymmetry is presented. Two sets of the Standard Model-like gauge group $G_1\times G_2$ are introduced, where $G_i=SU(3)_i\times SU(2)_i\times U(1)_i$, which break diagonally to the Standard Model gauge group at the energy scale $M \sim 10^7$ GeV. Gauge couplings in $G_1$ are assumed much larger than that in $G_2$. Gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking is adopted. The first two generations (third one) are charged only under $G_1$ ($G_2$). The effective supersymmetry spectrum is obtained. How to reproduce realistic Yukawa couplings is studied. Fine…
A way is suggested to understand why the average masses of $(d,s,b)$ quarks are smaller than those of $(u,c,t)$ quarks. In contrast to previously proposed mechanisms relying on different Higgs boson vacuum expectation values or different Yukawa couplings, the mass difference is explained as a consequence of mixing of $(d,s,b)$ with exotic quarks implied by the electroweak-strong unification group E$_{\rm 6}$.
Precision gauge coupling unification is one of the primary quantitative successes of low energy or split supersymmetry. Preserving this success puts severe restrictions on possible matter and gauge sectors that might appear at collider-accessible energies. In this work we enumerate new gauge sectors which are compatible with unification, consisting of horizontal gauge groups acting on vector-like matter charged under the Standard Model. Interestingly, almost all of these theories are in the supersymmetric conformal window at high energies and confine quickly after the superpartners are decoupl…
There are a lot of works within a class of classically scale invariant model, which is motivated by solving the gauge hierarchy problem. In this context, the Higgs mass vanishes at the UV scale due to the classically scale invariance, and is generated via the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. Since the mass generation should occur not so far from the electroweak scale, we extend the standard model only around the TeV scale. We construct a model which can achieve the gauge coupling unification at the UV scale. In the same way, the model can realize the vacuum stability, smallness of active neutrino m…
We point out that models where gauge and charged matter fields live on the world volume of D3 branes can provide a weak string coupling description of the gauge coupling unification in the supersymmetric standard model at a scale of order $10^{16}$ GeV. In the D3 brane picture, the string and unification scales coincide, while the size of the extra dimensions is somewhat larger than the string length. We then construct a quasirealistic "three generation" model with D3 branes at orbifold fixed points. We point out that placing D3 branes at different orbifold fixed points provides a geometric de…
We explore possible signatures for charged lepton flavour violation (LFV), sparticle discovery at the LHC and dark matter (DM) searches in grand unified theories (GUTs) based on SU(5), flipped SU(5) (FSU(5)) and SU(4)$_c \times $SU(2)$_L \times $SU(2)$_R$ (4-2-2). We assume that soft supersymmetry-breaking terms preserve the group symmetry at some high input scale, and focus on the non-universal effects on different matter representations generated by gauge interactions at lower scales, as well as the charged LFV induced in Type-1 see-saw models of neutrino masses. We identify the different me…
The electroweak currents of quarks and leptons in the $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification model in the Randall-Sundrum warped space are determined. The 4D gauge couplings deviate from those in the standard model and the weak universality is slightly violated. It is shown that the model is free from 4D anomalies and the deviations of the gauge couplings are tiny, less than 1% except for the top quark. The $Zt_L \bar t_L$, $Zt_R \bar t_R$, $Zb_L \bar b_L$ and $Zb_R \bar b_R$ couplings deviate from those in the standard model by -7%, 18%, 0.3% and 0.9% with the warp factor $z_L = 10^{15}$…
Massive neutrinos are a generic prediction of SO(10), and models of unification cry for supersymmetry. Since we have a rather detailed information on neutrino and charged fermion masses, the real question is: how/whether it is possible to build a SO(10) supersymmetric model, that correctly incorporates fermion masses. We show that a simple construction is possible in the context of a minimal theory. We concentrate on the two heaviest generations, discuss the predictions of the model, and briefly comment on open questions.
We construct a model of quark-lepton unification at the TeV scale based on an $SU(4)$ gauge symmetry, while still having acceptable neutrino masses and enough suppression in flavor changing neutral currents. An approximate $U(2)$ flavor symmetry is an artifact of family-dependent gauge charges leading to a natural realization of the CKM mixing matrix. The model predicts sizeable violation of PMNS unitarity as well as a gauge vector leptoquark $U_1^μ= ({\bf 3}, {\bf 1}, 2/3)$ which can be produced at the LHC -- both effects within the reach of future measurements. In addition, recently reported…
We build explicit supersymmetric unification models where grand unified gauge symmetry breaking and supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking are caused by the same sector. Besides, the SM-charged particles are also predicted by the symmetry breaking sector, and they give the soft SUSY breaking terms through the so-called gauge mediation. We investigate the mass spectrums in an explicit model with SU(5) and additional gauge groups, and discuss its phenomenological aspects. Especially, nonzero A-term and B-term are generated at one-loop level according to the mediation via the vector superfields, so that t…
The group E_6 for grand unification is combined with the generation symmetry group SO(3)_g. The coupling matrices in the Yukawa interaction are identified with the vacuum expectation values of scalar fields which are representations of the generation symmetry. These values determine the hierarchy of the fermions as well as their mixings and CP-violation. This generation mixing appears in conjunction with the mixing of the standard model fermions with the heavy fermions present in the lowest representation of E_6. A close connection between charged and neutral fermions is observed relating for …
Prospects for SO(10) as a minimal grand unification group have recently been heightened by several considerations such as the MSW resolution of the solar neutrino puzzle, baryogenesis, possibility for understanding fermion masses etc. I review the present status of the minimal SO(10) models with special emphasis on the predictions for proton lifetime and predictions for neutrino masses for the non-supersymmetric case and discuss some preliminary results for the supersymmetric case. It was generally believed that minimal SO(10) models predict wrong mass relations between the charged fermions of…
We explore a mechanism for radiatively generating neutrino Majorana masses in a 5 dimensional orbifold SU(5) unification model without introducing right-handed singlets. The model is non-supersymmetric and the extra dimension is compactified via a $s_1/(Z_2\times Z'_2)$ orbifold geometry. The necessary lepton number violating interaction arises from the Yukawa interactions either between a 10-plet or a 15-plet bulk scalar field and the fermion quintuplets which are residents on the SU(5) symmetrical brane located at one of the orbifold fixed points. The model is engineered to give realistic ch…
Gauge Higgs Unification in Warped Extra Dimensions provides an attractive solution to the hierarchy problem. The extension of the Standard Model gauge symmetry to $SO(5)xU(1)_X$ allows the incorporation of the custodial symmetry $SU(2)_R$ plus a Higgs boson doublet with the right quantum numbers under the gauge group. In the minimal model, the Higgs mass is in the range 110-150 GeV, while a light Kaluza Klein (KK) excitation of the top quark appears in the spectrum, providing agreement with precision electroweak measurements and a possible test of the model at a high luminosity LHC. The extens…
The recent conjecture of possible equivalence between the string scale $M_S$ and the minimal supersymmetric standard model unification scale M_U ~ 2.5 x 10^{16} GeV is considered in the context of string models. This conjecture suggests that the observable gauge group just below the string scale should be SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y and that the SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y-charged spectrum of the observable sector should consist solely of the MSSM spectrum. We demonstrate that string models can actually be constructed that possess these observable features. Two aspects generic to many classes of…
We explore the phenomenology of Grand Unified Models based on the E_6 group, focusing on the Z' with suppressed couplings to leptons that can appear in such models. We find that this Z' can accommodate the W+dijets anomaly reported by the CDF collaboration. Furthermore, a viable dark matter candidate in the form of a right-handed sneutrino is also present within the fundamental 27-dimensional representation of E_6. Through its sizable couplings to the Z', the dark matter is predicted to possess an elastic scattering cross section with neutrons which can generate the signals reported by the CoG…
We study the pair production of heavy charged exotic leptons at e+ e- colliders in the SU(2)_L x SU(2)_I x U(1)_Y model. This gauge group is a subgroup of the grand unification group E6; SU(2)_I commutes with the electric charge operator, and the three corresponding gauge bosons are electrically neutral. In addition to the standard photon and Z boson contributions, we also include the contributions from extra neutral gauge bosons. A t-channel contribution due to W_I-boson exchange, which is unsuppressed by mixing angles, is quite important. We calculate the left-right and forward-backward asym…
We examine the current lower bound on the charged Higgs boson mass in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. By applying direct search constraints on the neutral Higgs bosons and other supersymmetric states, as well as a number of indirect constraints (b -> s gamma, B_s -> mu mu, B -> tau nu, B -> D tau nu), we find that it is possible to push the charged Higgs boson mass as low as 140 GeV. We work in a completely low-energy approach with no assumptions about scalar mass unification, examining two of the most popular limits for neutral Higgs boson searches: the Max-Mixing and No-Mixing sce…
A brief review is given of recent developments related to the Higgs signal and its implications for supersymmetry in the supergravity grand unification framework. The Higgs data indicates that the allowed parameter space largely lies on focal curves and focal surfaces of the Hyperbolic Branch of radiative breaking of the electroweak symmetry where TeV size scalars naturally arise. The high mass of the Higgs leads to a more precise prediction for the allowed range of the spin independent neutralino -proton cross section which is encouraging for the detection of dark matter in future experiments…
We propose a simple renormalizable grand unified theory based on the $SU(5)$ gauge symmetry where the neutrino masses are generated at the quantum level through the Zee mechanism. In this model the same Higgs needed to correct the mass relation between charged leptons and down-type quarks plays a crucial role to generate neutrino masses. We show that in this model one can satisfy the constrains coming from the unification of gauge couplings and the mechanism for neutrino masses is discussed in detail. The predictions for proton decay are discussed in order to understand the testability at curr…
The simplest way to simultaneously understand all existing indications of neutrino oscillations from solar and atmospheric neutrino deficits and the LSND experiment, seems to be to postulate a sterile neutrino. We present a realistic grand unified model based on the gauge group $SO(10)\times SO(10)^\prime$ that leads to the desired masses and mixings for the sterile and the known neutrinos needed to understand the above observations while fitting those of the known charged fermions. The model is a grand unified realization of the recently proposed idea that the sterile neutrino is the lightest…
We propose that the electroweak and flavour quantum numbers of the Standard Model (SM) could be unified at high energies in an $SU(4)\times Sp(6)_L \times Sp(6)_R$ anomaly-free gauge model. All the SM fermions are packaged into two fundamental fields, $Ψ_L \sim (\mathbf{4}, \mathbf{6}, \mathbf{1})$ and $Ψ_R\sim (\mathbf{4}, \mathbf{1},\mathbf{6})$, thereby explaining the origin of three families of fermions. The SM Higgs, being electroweakly charged, necessarily becomes charged also under flavour when embedded in the UV model. It is therefore natural for its vacuum expectation value to couple …
A realistic SU(3)_C x SU(3)_W unified theory is constructed with a TeV sized extra dimension compactified on the orbifold S_1/Z_2, leaving only the standard model gauge group SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y unbroken in the low energy 4D theory. The Higgs doublets are zero modes of bulk SU(3)_W triplets and serve to normalize the hypercharge generator, apparently giving a tree-level prediction for the weak mixing angle: \sin^2θ= 1/4. The orbifold boundary conditions imply a restricted set of SU(3)_W gauge transformations: at an orbifold fixed point only the transformations of SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y are op…
A flavour symmetry based on Z_4 is analysed in the context of SU(5) Grand Unification with the standard fermionic content plus three right-handed neutrinos. The role of Z_4 is to forbid some Yukawa couplings of up- and down-quarks to Higgs scalars such that the quark mass matrices M_u, M_d have Nearest-Neighbour-Interaction (NNI) structure, once they are generated through the electroweak symmetry breaking. It turns out in this framework that Z_4 is indeed the minimal discrete symmetry and its implementation requires the introduction of at least two Higgs quintets, which leads to a two Higgs do…
The observed hierarchical charged fermion masses of three generations seem to imply that these masses are originally universal for three generations and then get exponential suppression with "quantized exponents" by some mechanism. We argue that such remarkable feature of hierarchical fermion mass spectrum may be naturally understood in the scenario of gauge-Higgs unification, where the universality of fermion masses is guaranteed by the fact that Higgs boson is originally gauge boson in this scenario and also the quantized exponents may be attributed to the well-known quantization condition o…
We consider orbifold GUTs with N=1 supersymmetry in which the Standard Model (SM) gauge couplings are unified at M_GUT =~ 2 x 10^16 GeV with one of the third family (charged) Yukawa couplings. With split supersymmetry the SM Higgs mass is estimated to be 131 +/- 10 GeV for gauge-top quark Yukawa unification, which increases to 146 +/- 8 GeV for gauge-bottom quark (or gauge-tau lepton) Yukawa unification.
We show that minimal SO(10) Grand Unification models where the fermions have Yukawa couplings to only one (complex) {\bf 10} and one {\bf 126} of Higgs scalars lead to a very predictive neutrino spectrum. This comes about since the standard model doublet contained in the {\bf 126} of Higgs (needed for the see--saw mechanism) receives an induced vacuum expectation value at tree--level, which, in addition to correcting the bad asymptotic mass relations $m_d=m_e$ and $m_s=m_μ$, also relates the Majorana neutrino mass matrix to observables in the charged fermion sectors. We find that (i) the $ν_e-…
