The only (unitary) perfect polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_2$ that are products of $x$, $x+1$ and Mersenne primes are precisely the nine (resp. nine "classes") known ones. This follows from a new result about the factorization of $M^{2h+1} +1$, for a Mersenne prime $M$ and for a positive integer $h$. Other consequences of such a factorization are new results about odd perfect polynomials.
We address an arithmetic problem in the ring $\F_2[x]$ related to the fixed points of the sum of divisors function. We study some binary polynomials $A$ such that $σ(A)/A $ is still a binary polynomial. Technically, we prove that the only (unitary) perfect polynomials over $\F_2$ that are products of $x$, $x+1$ and of Mersenne primes are precisely the nine (resp. nine "classes") known ones. This follows from a new result about the factorization of $M^{2h+1} +1$, for a Mersenne prime $M$ and for a positive integer $h$.
We investigate various questions concerning the reciprocal sum of divisors, or prime divisors, of the Mersenne numbers $2^n-1$. Conditional on the Elliott-Halberstam Conjecture and the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we determine $\max_{n\le x} \sum_{p \mid 2^n-1} 1/p$ to within $o(1)$ and $\max_{n\le x} \sum_{d\mid 2^n-1}1/d$ to within a factor of $1+o(1)$, as $x\to\infty$. This refines, conditionally, earlier estimates of Erdős and Erdős-Kiss-Pomerance. Conditionally (only) on GRH, we also determine $\sum 1/d$ to within a factor of $1+o(1)$ where $d$ runs over all numbers dividing $2^n-1$ fo…
We get some results about the factorization of $ϕ_p(M) \in {\mathbb{F}}_2[x]$, where $p$ is a prime number, $ϕ_p$ is the corresponding cyclotomic polynomial and $M$ is a Mersenne prime (polynomial). By the way, we better understand the factorization of the sum of the divisors of $M^{2h}$, for a positive integer $h$.
Let $(M_n)_{n\geq0}$ be the Mersenne sequence defined by $M_n=2^n-1$. Let $ω(n)$ be the number of distinct prime divisors of $n.$ In this short note, we present a description of the Mersenne numbers satisfying $ω(M_n)\leq3$. Moreover, we prove that the inequality, given $ε>0$, $ω(M_n)> 2^{(1-ε)\log\log n} -3 $ holds for almost all positive integers $n$. Besides, we present the integer solutions $(m,n,a)$ of the equation $M_m+M_n=2p^a$ with $m,n\geq2$, $p$ an odd prime number and $a$ a positive integer.
We introduce a new class of pseudoprimes-so called "overpseudoprimes" which is a special subclass of super-Poulet pseudoprimes. Denoting via h(n) the multiplicative order of 2 modulo n, we show that odd number n is overpseudoprime iff value of h(n) is invariant of all divisors d>1 of n. In particular, we prove that all composite Mersenne numbers 2^p-1,where p is prime, and squares of Wieferich primes are overpseudoprimes. We give also a generalization of the results on arbitrary base a>1 and prove that every overpseudoprime is strong pseudoprime of the same base.
We introduce a new class of pseudoprimes-so called "overpseudoprimes to base $b$", which is a subclass of strong pseudoprimes to base $b$. Denoting via $|b|_n$ the multiplicative order of $b$ modulo $n$, we show that a composite $n$ is overpseudoprime if and only if $|b|_d$ is invariant for all divisors $d>1$ of $n$. In particular, we prove that all composite Mersenne numbers $2^{p}-1$, where $p$ is prime, are overpseudoprime to base 2 and squares of Wieferich primes are overpseudoprimes to base 2. Finally, we show that some kinds of well known numbers are overpseudoprime to a base $b$.
The divisor function $σ(n)$ denotes the sum of the divisors of the positive integer $n$. For a prime $p$ and $m \in \mathbb{N}$, the $p$-adic valuation of $m$ is the highest power of $p$ which divides $m$. Formulas for $ν_{p}(σ(n))$ are established. For $p=2$, these involve only the odd primes dividing $n$. These expressions are used to establish the bound $ν_{2}(σ(n)) \leq \lceil\log_{2}(n) \rceil$, with equality if and only if $n$ is the product of distinct Mersenne primes, and for an odd prime $p$, the bound is $ν_{p}(σ(n)) \leq \lceil \log_{p}(n) \rceil$, with equality related to solutions…
We give all bi-unitary non splitting even perfect polynomials over the prime field of two elements, which are divisible by Mersenne irreducible polynomials raised to special exponents. We also identify all bi-unitary perfect polynomials over the same field, with at most four irreducible factors. We then complete, in this manner, a list given by J.T. B. Beard Jr.

We say that $d$ is an exponential unitary divisor of $n=p_1^{a_1}... p_r^{a_r}>1$ if $d=p_1^{b_1}... p_r^{b_r}$, where $b_i$ is a unitary divisor of $a_i$, i.e., $b_i\mid a_i$ and $(b_i,a_i/b_i)=1$ for every $i\in \{1,2,...,r\}$. We survey properties of related arithmetical functions and introduce the notion of exponential unitary perfect numbers.
This article establishes a new upper bound on the function $σ^{*}(n)$, the sum of all coprime divisors of $n$. The article concludes with two questions concerning this function.
For any real $t$, the unitary divisor function $σ_t^*$ is the multiplicative arithmetic function defined by $σ_t^*(p^α)=1+p^{αt}$ for all primes $p$ and positive integers $α$. Let $\overline{σ_t^*(\mathbb N)}$ denote the topological closure of the range $σ_t^*$. We calculate an explicit constant $η^*\approx 1.9742550$ and show that $\overline{σ_{-r}^*(\mathbb N)}$ is connected if and only if $r\in(0,η^*]$. We end with an open problem.
The divisor function $σ(n)$ sums the divisors of $n$. We call $n$ abundant when $σ(n) - n > n$ and perfect when $σ(n) - n = n$. I recently introduced the recursive divisor function $a(n)$, the recursive analog of the divisor function. It measures the extent to which a number is highly divisible into parts, such that the parts are highly divisible into subparts, so on. Just as the divisor function motivates the abundant and perfect numbers, the recursive divisor function motivates their recursive analogs, which I introduce here. A number is recursively abundant, or ample, if $a(n) > n$ and recu…
We study the intersections of special cycles on a unitary Shimura variety of signature (n-1,1), and show that the intersection multiplicities of these cycles agree with Fourier coefficients of Eisenstein series. The results are new cases of conjectures of Kudla, and suggest a Gross-Zagier theorem for unitary Shimura varieties.
For a discrete subgroup of an indefinite unitary group $U(1,n+1)$, $n\geq 1$, consider the attached modular variety. Using local Borcherds products, we study Heegner divisors in the local Picard group over a boundary component the compactified variety. We obtain a criterion for local Heegner divisors to be torsion elements in the local Picard group. As an application, we find that the obstructions for a local Heegner divisor to be a torsion element can be described through spaces of vector valued elliptic cusp forms spanned by certain theta-series.
A unitary divisor $c$ of a positive integer $n$ is a positive divisor of $n$ that is relatively prime to $\displaystyle{\frac{n}{c}}$. For any integer $k$, the function $σ_k^*$ is a multiplicative arithmetic function defined so that $σ_k^*(n)$ is the sum of the $k^{th}$ powers of the unitary divisors of $n$. We provide analogues of the functions $σ_k^*$ in imaginary quadratic rings that are unique factorization domains. We then explore properties of what we call $n$-powerfully unitarily $t$-perfect numbers, analogues of the unitary multiperfect numbers that have been defined and studied in the…
We form generating series of special divisors, valued in the Chow group and in the arithmetic Chow group, on the compactified integral model of a Shimura variety associated to a unitary group of signature (n-1,1), and prove their modularity. The main ingredient of the proof is the calculation of the vertical components appearing in the divisor of a Borcherds product on the integral model.
We prove two formulas in the style of the Gross-Zagier theorem, relating derivatives of L-functions to arithmetic intersection pairings on a unitary Shimura variety. We also prove a special case of Colmez's conjecture on the Faltings heights of abelian varieties with complex multiplication. These results are derived from the authors' earlier results on the modularity of generating series of divisors on unitary Shimura varieties.
We study special cycles on integral models of Shimura varieties associated with unitary similitude groups of signature (n-1,1). We construct an arithmetic theta lift from harmonic Maass forms of weight 2-n to the arithmetic Chow group of the integral model of a unitary Shimura variety, by associating to a harmonic Maass form f a linear combination of Kudla-Rapoport divisors, equipped with the Green function given by the regularized theta lift of f. Our main result is an equality of two complex numbers: (1) the height pairing of the arithmetic theta lift of f against a CM cycle, and (2) the cen…
In [arXiv:1504.07804], Keating, Rodgers, Roditty-Gershon and Rudnick established relationships of the mean-square of sums of the divisor function $d_k(f)$ over short intervals and over arithmetic progressions for the function field $\mathbb F_q[T]$ to certain integrals over the ensemble of unitary matrices. We consider similar problems leading to distributions over the ensemble of symplectic matrices. We also consider analogous questions involving convolutions of the von Mangoldt function.
We consider two families of arithmetic divisors defined on integral models of Shimura curves. The first was studied by Kudla, Rapoport and Yang, who proved that if one assembles these divisors in a formal generating series, one obtains the q-expansion of a modular form of weight 3/2. The present work concerns the Shimura lift of this modular form: we identify the Shimura lift with a generating series comprised of unitary divisors, which arose in recent work of Kudla and Rapoport regarding cycles on Shimura varieties of unitary type. In the prequel to this paper, the author considered the geome…
We study the mean square of sums of the $k$th divisor function $d_k(n)$ over short intervals and arithmetic progressions for the rational function field over a finite field of $q$ elements. In the limit as $q\rightarrow\infty$ we establish a relationship with a matrix integral over the unitary group. Evaluating this integral enables us to compute the mean square of the sums of $d_k(n)$ in terms of a lattice point count. This lattice point count can in turn be calculated in terms of certain polynomials, which we analyse. Our results suggest general conjectures for the corresponding classical pr…
This paper concerns two families of divisors, which we call the `orthogonal' and `unitary' special cycles, defined on integral models of Shimura curves. The orthogonal family was studied extensively by Kudla-Rapoport-Yang, who showed that they are closely related to the Fourier coefficients of modular forms of weight 3/2, while the `unitary' divisors are analogues of cycles appearing in more recent work of Kudla-Rapoport on unitary Shimura varieties. Our main result shows that these two families are related by (a formal version of) the Shimura lift.
