We present the first experimental demonstration of quantum-enhanced detection at x-ray wavelengths. We show that x-ray pairs that are generated by spontaneous down-conversion can be used for the generation of heralded x-ray photons and measure directly the sub-Poissonian statistics of the single photons by using photon number resolving detectors. We utilize the properties of the strong time-energy correlations of the down converted photons to demonstrate the ability to improve the visibility and the signal-to-noise ratio of an image with a small number of photons in an environment with a noise level that is higher than the signal by many orders of magnitude. In our work we demonstrate a new protocol for the measurement of quantum effects with x-rays using advantages such as background free measurements that the x-ray regime offers for experiments aiming at testing fundamental concepts in quantum optics.
In recent experiments[e.g., Nature Physics 2, 332 (2006)], the enhanced light deflection in an atomic ensemble due to inhomogeneous fields is demonstrated by the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) based mechanism. In this paper, we explore an different mechanism for the similar phenomenon of the enhanced light deflection. This mechanism is based on the coherent population oscillation, which leads to the hole burning in the absorption spectrum. The medium causing the deflection of probe light is an ensemble of two-level atoms manipulated by a strong controlled field on the two photo…
We propose a theoretical scheme to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio in ultrasensitive detection with the help of quantum correlation. By introducing the auxiliary oscillator and treated as an added probe for weak field detection, the additional noise can be greatly suppressed and the measurement accuracy may even break the standard quantum limit. We use the magnetic field as an example to exhibit the detection capability of our scheme. The result show that, comparing with the traditional detection protocol, our scheme can have higher signal-to-noise ratio and better detection accuracy. Furthe…
Heterodyne detectors as phase-insensitive (PI) devices have found important applications in precision measurements such as space-based gravitational-wave (GW) observation. However, the output signal of a PI heterodyne detector is supposed to suffer from signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) degradation due to image band vacuum and imperfect quantum efficiency. Here we show that the SNR degradation can be overcome when the image band vacuum is quantum correlated with the input signal. We calculate the noise figure of the detector and prove the feasibility of heterodyne detection with enhanced noise perfo…
In this work we investigate quantum-enhanced target detection in the presence of large background noise using multidimensional quantum correlations between photon pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Until now similar experiments have only utilized one of the photon pairs' many degrees of freedom such as temporal correlations and photon number correlations. Here, we utilized both temporal and spectral correlations of the photon pairs and achieved over an order of magnitude reduction to the background noise and in turn significant reduction to data acquisition time wh…
Driven dissipative steady state entanglement schemes take advantage of coupling to the environment to robustly prepare highly entangled states. We present a scheme for two trapped ions to generate a maximally entangled steady state with fidelity above 0.99, appropriate for use in quantum protocols. Furthermore, we extend the scheme by introducing detection of our dissipation process, significantly enhancing the fidelity. Our scheme is robust to anomalous heating and requires no sympathetic cooling.
We report on an orbital-angular-momentum-enhanced scheme for angular displacement estimation based on two-mode squeezed vacuum and parity detection. The sub-Heisenberg-limited sensitivity for angular displacement estimation is obtained in an ideal situation. Several realistic factors are also considered, including photon loss, dark counts, response-time delay, and thermal photon noise. Our results indicate that the effects of the realistic factors on the sensitivity can be offset by raising orbital angular momentum quantum number $\ell$. This reflects that the robustness and the practicability…
Quantum and Classical computers continue to work together in tight cooperation to solve difficult problems. The combination is thus suggested in recent times for decoding the Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, for the next generation Wireless Communication systems. In this paper we have worked out the Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) formulation for Rayleigh Fading channels for two different scenarios: channel state fully known and not known. The resultant QUBO are solved using D-Wave 2000Q Quantum Annealer and the outputs from the Annealer are classically postprocessed, …
We investigate the use of correlated photon pair sources for the improved quantum-level detection of a target in the presence of a noise background. Photon pairs are generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing, one photon from each pair (the herald) is measured locally while the other (the signal) is sent to illuminate the target. Following diffuse reflection from the target, the signal photons are detected by a receiver and non-classical timing correlations between the signal and herald are measured in the presence of a configurable background noise source. Quantum correlations from the photon …
Recently, there have been significant developments to detect nuclear spins with an nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond. However, due to the nature of the short range dipole-dipole interaction, it takes a long time to detect distant nuclear spins with the NV centers. Here, we propose a rapid detection of nuclear spins with an entanglement between the NV centers. We show that the necessary time to detect the nuclear spins with the entanglement is several orders of magnitude shorter than that with separable NV centers. Our result pave the way for new applications in nanoscale nuclear magnetic…
We show that a special type of measurements, called symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (SIC POVMs), provide a stronger entanglement detection criterion than the computable cross-norm or realignment criterion based on local orthogonal observables. As an illustration, we demonstrate the enhanced entanglement detection power in simple systems of qubit and qutrit pairs. This observation highlights the significance of SIC POVMs for entanglement detection.
We formulate a general family of entanglement criteria for multipartite systems. Fisher information criteria compare the sensitivity to unitary rotations with the variances of suitable local observables. Generalized squeezing-type criteria provide lower bounds that are less stringent but only require measurements of second moments. The enhancement due to local access to the individual subsystems is studied in detail for the case of $N$ spin-$1/2$ particles. The discussed techniques can be readily implemented in current experiments with trapped ions in Paul traps and neutral atoms in optical la…
Quantum illumination (QI) provides entanglement-based target detection---in an entanglement-breaking environment---whose performance is significantly better than that of optimum classical-illumination target detection. QI's performance advantage was established in a Bayesian setting with the target presumed equally likely to be absent or present and error probability employed as the performance metric. Radar theory, however, eschews that Bayesian approach, preferring the Neyman-Pearson performance criterion to avoid the difficulties of accurately assigning prior probabilities to target absence…
Quantum illumination (QI) is an entanglement-enhanced sensing system whose performance advantage over a comparable classical system survives its usage in an entanglement-breaking scenario plagued by loss and noise. In particular, QI's error-probability exponent for discriminating between equally-likely hypotheses of target absence or presence is 6 dB higher than that of the optimum classical system using the same transmitted power. This performance advantage, however, presumes that the target return, when present, has known amplitude and phase, a situation that seldom occurs in lidar applicati…
The accurate radio frequency (RF) ranging and localizing of objects has benefited the researches including autonomous driving, the Internet of Things, and manufacturing. Quantum receivers have been proposed to detect the radio signal with ability that can outperform conventional measurement. As one of the most promising candidates, solid spin shows superior robustness, high spatial resolution and miniaturization. However, challenges arise from the moderate response to a high frequency RF signal. Here, by exploiting the coherent interaction between quantum sensor and RF field, we demonstrate qu…
A novel class of coherent nonlinear optical phenomena, involving induced transparency in quantum wells, is considered in the context of a particular application to sensitive long-wavelength infrared detection. It is shown that the strongest decoherence mechanisms can be suppressed or mitigated, resulting in substantial enhancement of nonlinear optical effects in semiconductor quantum wells.
I consider the role of detection noise in quantum-enhanced metrology in collective spin systems, and derive a fundamental bound for the maximum obtainable sensitivity for a given level of added detection noise. I then present an interaction-based readout utilising the commonly used one-axis twisting scheme that approaches this bound for states generated via several commonly considered methods of generating quantum enhancement, such as one-axis twisting, two-axis counter-twisting, twist-and-turn squeezing, quantum non-demolition measurements, and adiabatically scanning through a quantum phase t…
Amplitude modulation of a tilted optical lattice can be used to steer the quantum transport of matter wave packets in a very flexible way. This allows the experimental study of the phase sensitivity in a multimode interferometer based on delocalization-enhanced Bloch oscillations and to probe the band structure modified by a constant force.
Using higher-order coherence of thermal light sources, the resolution power of standard x-ray imaging techniques can be enhanced. In this work, we applied the higher-order measurement to far-field x-ray diffraction and near-field phase contrast imaging (PCI), in order to achieve superresolution in x-ray diffraction and obtain enhanced intensity contrast in PCI. The cost of implementing such schemes is minimal compared to the methods that achieve similar effects by using entangled x-ray photon pairs.
The core issue for the implementation of the diamond NV centre qubits technology is the sensitive readout of NV spin state. We have recently demonstrated the photoelectric detection of NV magnetic resonances (PDMR), anticipated to be faster and more sensitive than optical detection (ODMR). Here we report on a PDMR contrast of 9 % - three times enhanced compared to previous work - on shallow N-implanted diamond. Based on ab-initio modelling, we demonstrate a novel one-photon ionization dual-beam PDMR protocol. We predict that this scheme is significantly less vulnerable to the influence of defe…
We propose an optimized design for nanowire superconducting single photon detectors, using the recently discovered position dependent detection efficiency in these devices. This knowledge allows an optimized the design of meandering wire NbN detectors by altering the field distribution across the wire. In order to calculate the response of the detectors with different geometries, we use a monotonic local detection efficiency from a nanowire and optical absorption distribution via finite-different-time-domain simulations. The calculations predict a trade-off between average absorption and the e…
