Heterodyne detectors as phase-insensitive (PI) devices have found important applications in precision measurements such as space-based gravitational-wave (GW) observation. However, the output signal of a PI heterodyne detector is supposed to suffer from signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) degradation due to image band vacuum and imperfect quantum efficiency. Here we show that the SNR degradation can be overcome when the image band vacuum is quantum correlated with the input signal. We calculate the noise figure of the detector and prove the feasibility of heterodyne detection with enhanced noise performance through quantum correlation. This work should be of great interest to ongoing space-borne GW signal searching experiments.
Homodyne and heterodyne detection represent "twin-pillars" of quantum displacement sensing using optical cavities, having permitted major breakthroughs including detection of gravitational waves and of the motion of quantum ground-state cooled mechanical oscillators. Both can suffer disadvantages as diagnostics in quantum optomechanics, either through symmetrisation (homodyne), or loss of correlations (heterodyne). We show that, for modest heterodyne beat frequencies ($Ω\sim ω_M/10 \gg Γ$), judicious construction of the autocorrelation of the measured current can either recover (i) a spectrum …
Cross-correlation heterodyne detectors exhibit the potential for suppression of the detection quantum noise below shot noise without use of optical squeezing for capturing weak optical signals in low frequency bands. To understand the underlying mechanism, we develop a quantum theory to describe the noise performance of cross-correlation heterodyne detectors. By calculating the cross spectral density (CSD) of the photocurrent fluctuations from a cross-correlation heterodyne detector, we prove that its noise performance can break the shot noise limit and exceed that of a regular heterodyne dete…
The efficiency of the frequency conversion process at the heart of Raman heterodyne spectroscopy was improved by nearly four orders of magnitude by resonant enhancement of both the pump and signal optical fields. Our results using an erbium doped Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal at temperatures near 4K suggest that such an approach is promising for the quantum conversion of microwave to optical photons.
The extraordinary sensitivity of the output field of an optical cavity to small quantum-scale displacements has led to breakthroughs such as the first detection of gravitational waves \cite{LIGO,LIGODC} and of the motions of quantum ground-state cooled mechanical oscillators \cite{Teufel2011,Chan2011}. While heterodyne detection of the cavity field preserves asymmetries which provide a key signature that mechanical oscillators has attained the quantum regime, detection of a rotating quadrature of the light averages out important quantum correlations, yielding a weaker signal and lower sensitiv…
A new heterodyne detection method is suggested for detecting gravitational waves in a Michelson Interferometer. The method is based on interference between phase changes which are induced by a vibrating mirror with phase changes which are due to the gravitational waves. The advantage of using a second order correlation function in the present analysis is discussed.
One of the most widely used chiroptical spectroscopic methods for studying chiral molecules is Raman optical activity; however, the chiral Raman optical activity signal is extremely weak. Here, we theoretically examine enhanced chiral signals in a system with strongly prepared molecular coherence. We show that the enhanced chiral signal due to strong molecular coherence is up to four orders of magnitude higher than that of the spontaneous Raman optical activity. We discuss several advantages of studying the heterodyned signal obtained by combining the anti-Stokes signal with a local oscillator…
The cross-correlation sensitivity of two identical balanced photodiode heterodyne receivers is characterized. Both balanced photodiodes receive the same weak signal split up equally, a situation equivalent to an astronomical spatial interferometer. A common local oscillator (LO) is also split up equally and its phase difference between both receivers is stabilized. We show by semi-classical photon deletion theory that the post-detection laser shot noise contributions on both receivers must be completely uncorrelated in this case of passing three power splitters. We measured the auto- and cross…

Indistinguishability is an essential concept to understanding mysterious quantum features in the view point of the wave-particle duality of quantum mechanics. The fundamental physics of the indistinguishability lies in quantum superposition of a single photon via orthogonal bases in a Hilbert space. Here, a pure coherence approach is applied to the nonlocal correlation using coherent photons manipulated for polarization-frequency correlation. For this, both wave mixing and heterodyne detection techniques are applied for the delayed-choice experiments of a quantum eraser using coherent photons …
Quantum illumination (QI) promises unprecedented performances in target detection but there are various problems surrounding its implementation. Where target ranging is a concern, signal and idler recombination forms a crucial barrier to the protocol's success. This could potentially be mitigated if performing a measurement on the idler mode could still yield a quantum advantage. In this paper we investigate the QI protocol for a generically correlated Gaussian source and study the phase-conjugating (PC) receiver, deriving the associated SNR in terms of the signal and idler energies, and their…
A continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol based on squeezed states and heterodyne detection is introduced and shown to attain higher secret key rates over a noisy line than any other one-way Gaussian protocol. This increased resistance to channel noise can be understood as resulting from purposely adding noise to the signal that is converted into the secret key. This notion of noise-enhanced tolerance to noise also provides a better physical insight into the poorly understood discrepancies between the previously defined families of Gaussian protocols.
Quantum correlations between imprecision and back-action are a hallmark of continuous linear measurements. Here we study how measurement-based feedback can be used to improve the visibility of quantum correlations due to the interaction of a laser field with a nano-optomechanical system. Back-action imparted by the meter laser, due to radiation pressure quantum fluctuations, gives rise to correlations between its phase and amplitude quadratures. These quantum correlations are observed in the experiment both as squeezing of the meter field fluctuations below the vacuum level in a homodyne measu…
We propose a method for increasing purity of interacting quantum systems that takes advantage of correlations present due to the internal interaction. In particular we show that by using the system's quantum correlations one can achieve cooling beyond established limits of previous conventional algorithmic cooling proposals which assume no interaction.
We investigate the resonant quantum dynamics of a laser-pumped real or artificial two-level single-atom system embedded in a leaking microcavity. We found that for stronger laser-atom-cavity couplings the generated microcavity photons exhibit larger steady-state correlations. In particular, the second- and third-order photon correlation functions are greater than the corresponding ones obtained for an incoherent light source, respectively. Furthermore, the emitted microcavity photon flux is enhanced in comparison to weaker coupling cases.
We theoretically propose a method to enhance Raman scattering by injecting a seeded light field which is correlated with the initially prepared atomic spin wave. Such a light-atom correlation leads to an interference in the Raman scattering. The interference is sensitive to the relative phase between the seeded light field and initially prepared atomic spin wave. For constructive interference, the Raman scattering is greatly enhanced. Such an enhanced Raman scattering may find applications in quantum information, nonlinear optics and optical metrology due to its simplicity.
In this work we investigate quantum-enhanced target detection in the presence of large background noise using multidimensional quantum correlations between photon pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Until now similar experiments have only utilized one of the photon pairs' many degrees of freedom such as temporal correlations and photon number correlations. Here, we utilized both temporal and spectral correlations of the photon pairs and achieved over an order of magnitude reduction to the background noise and in turn significant reduction to data acquisition time wh…
We investigate the quantum properties of fields generated by resonantly enhanced wave mixing based on atomic coherence in Raman systems. We show that such a process can be used for generation of pairs of Stokes and anti-Stokes fields with nearly perfect quantum correlations, yielding almost complete (i.e. 100%) squeezing without the use of a cavity. We discuss the extension of the wave mixing interactions into the domain of a few interacting light quanta.
Heralded single photon sources are the most commonly used sources for optical quantum technology applications. There is strong demand for accurate prediction of their spectral features and temporal correlations with ever increasing precision. This is particularly important in connection with the intrinsically stochastic photon-pair generation process in heralded sources. Here we present a complete theoretical description of the temporal correlation of a signal-idler, signal-signal and signal-signal-idler coincidences of photons generated by continuous wave pumped cavity-enhanced spontaneous pa…
In the context of the quantum-mechanical description of single-molecule surface-enhanced Raman scattering, intensity-field correlation measurements of photons emitted from a plasmonic cavity are explored, theoretically, using the technique of conditional homodyne detection. The inelastic interplay between plasmons and vibrations of a diatomic molecule placed inside the cavity can be manifested in phase-dependent third-order fluctuations of the light recorded by the aforesaid technique, allowing us to reveal signatures of non-classicality (indicatives of squeezing) of the outgoing Raman photons…

We propose a theoretical scheme to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio in ultrasensitive detection with the help of quantum correlation. By introducing the auxiliary oscillator and treated as an added probe for weak field detection, the additional noise can be greatly suppressed and the measurement accuracy may even break the standard quantum limit. We use the magnetic field as an example to exhibit the detection capability of our scheme. The result show that, comparing with the traditional detection protocol, our scheme can have higher signal-to-noise ratio and better detection accuracy. Furthe…
Distinct from closed quantum systems, non-Hermitian system can have exceptional points (EPs) where both eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce. Recently, it has been proposed and demonstrated that EPs can enhance the performance of sensors in terms of amplification of detected signal. Meanwhile, the noise might also be amplified at EPs and it is not obvious whether exceptional points will still improve the performance of sensors when both signal and noise are amplified. We develop quantum noise theory to systematically calculate the signal and noise associated with the EP sensors. We then compu…
By exploiting the hyperentanglement, we propose a new concrete scheme to realize weak value amplification, which can be implemented by N hyperentangled photons along with coincidence detection. Our scheme can optimally increase the amplification factor by a factor of N compared to the usage of N uncorrelated photons, and achieve the Heisenberg limit for the purpose of parameter estimation. We expect our study can inspire a further investigation on the usage of hyperentanglement in weak measurement and quantum metrology.
In this review we present the potentialities and the achievements of the use of non-classical photon number correlations in twin beams (TWB) states for many applications, ranging from imaging to metrology. Photon number correlations in the quantum regime are easy to be produced and are rather robust against unavoidable experimental losses, and noise in some cases, if compared to the entanglement, where loosing one photon can completely compromise the state and its exploitable advantage. Here, we will focus on quantum enhanced protocols in which only phase-insensitive intensity measurements (ph…
We investigate the role of nonclassical temporal correlations in enhancing the performance of ticking clocks in a discrete-time scenario. We show that the problem of optimal models for ticking clocks is related to the violation of Leggett-Garg-type temporal inequalities formulated in terms of, possibly invasive, sequential measurements, but on a system with a bounded memory capacity. Ticking clocks inspire the derivation of a family of temporal inequalities showing a gap between classical and quantum correlations, despite involving no input. We show that quantum ticking-clock models achieving …
We study how conditional photon operations can affect multipartite quantum correlations, specifically nonlocality and entanglement, of the continuous variable GHZ states. We find that the violation of the Mermin-Klyshko inequality revealing the multipartite nonlocality can be made stronger with photon subtraction applied on each mode of the original GHZ states, particularly in a weak squeezing regime. Photon addition applied on local modes also turns out to enhance the degree of multipartite nonlocality in a broad range of parameters. We further investigate the effects of the photon operations…
This paper introduces a Quantum Correlation Matrix Memory (QCMM) and Enhanced QCMM (EQCMM), which are useful to work with quantum memories. A version of classical Gram-Schmidt orthogonalisation process in Dirac notation (called Quantum Orthogonalisation Process: QOP) is presented to convert a non-orthonormal quantum basis, i.e., a set of non-orthonormal quantum vectors (called qudits) to an orthonormal quantum basis, i.e., a set of orthonormal quantum qudits. This work shows that it is possible to improve the performance of QCMM thanks QOP algorithm. Besides, the EQCMM algorithm has a lot of a…
Quantum measurements of mechanical systems can produce optical squeezing via ponderomotive forces. Its observation requires high environmental isolation and efficient detection, typically achieved by using optical cavities and cryogenic cooling. Here we realize these conditions by measuring the position of an optically levitated nanoparticle at room temperature and without the overhead of an optical cavity. We use a fast heterodyne detection to reconstruct simultaneously orthogonal optical quadratures, and observe a noise reduction of $9\%\pm0.5\%$ below shot noise. Our experiment offers a nov…
Early-time electron-positron correlation in vacuum pair-production in an external field is investigated. The entangled electron and positron wave functions are obtained analytically in the configuration and momentum spaces. It is shown that, relative to that of the one-dimensional theory, two- and three-dimensional calculations yield enhanced spatial correlation and broadened momentum spectrum. In fact, at early times the electron and positron almost coincide spatially. The correlation also depends on the direction of the applied field. For the spatial correlation, the transverse correlation i…
For cyclic heat engines operating in a finite cycle period, thermodynamic quantities have intercycle and intracycle correlations. By tuning the driving protocol appropriately, we can get the negative intercycle correlation to reduce the fluctuation of work through multiple cycles, which leads to the enhanced stability compared to the single-cycle operation. Taking the Otto engine with an overdamped Brownian particle as a working substance, we identify a scenario to get such enhanced stability by the intercycle correlation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the enhancement can be readily realize…
Starting from a product initial state, equal-time correlations in nonrelativistic quantum lattice models propagate within a lightcone-like causal region. The presence of entanglement in the initial state can modify this behavior, enhancing and accelerating the growth of correlations. In this paper we give a quantitative description, in the form of Lieb-Robinson-type bounds on equal-time correlation functions, of the interplay of dynamics vs. initial entanglement in quantum lattice models out of equilibrium. We test the bounds against model calculations, and also discuss applications to quantum…

We theoretically propose a biphoton entanglement-enhanced multidimensional spectroscopic technique as a probe for the dissipative polariton dynamics in the ultrafast regime. It is applied to the cavity-confined monomeric photosynthetic complex that represents a prototypical multi-site excitonic quantum aggregate. The proposed technique is shown to be particularly sensitive to inter-manifold polariton coherence between the two and one-excitation subspaces. It is demonstrated to be able to monitor the dynamical role of cavity-mediated excitonic correlations, and dephasing in the presence of phon…
We investigate how the presence of quantum correlations can influence work extraction in closed quantum systems, establishing a new link between the field of quantum non-equilibrium thermodynamics and the one of quantum information theory. We consider a bipartite quantum system and we show that it is possible to optimise the process of work extraction, thanks to the correlations between the two parts of the system, by using an appropriate feedback protocol based on the concept of ergotropy. We prove that the maximum gain in the extracted work is related to the existence of quantum correlations…
We derive a detector that optimizes the target detection performance of any single-input single-output noise radar satisfying the following properties: it transmits Gaussian noise, it retains an internal reference signal for matched filtering, all external noise is additive white Gaussian noise, and all signals are measured using heterodyne receivers. This class of radars, which we call noise-type radars, includes not only many types of standard noise radars, but also a type of quantum radar known as quantum two-mode squeezing radar. The detector, which we derive using the Neyman-Pearson lemma…
