Previous analyses of asymptotic symmetries in QED have shown that the subleading soft photon theorem implies a Ward identity corresponding to a charge generating divergent large gauge transformations on the asymptotic states at null infinity. In this work, we demonstrate that the subleading soft photon theorem is equivalent to a more general Ward identity. The charge corresponding to this Ward identity can be decomposed into an electric piece and a magnetic piece. The electric piece generates the Ward identity that was previously studied, but the magnetic piece is novel, and implies the existence of an additional asymptotic "magnetic" symmetry in QED.
Large Gauge Transformations (LGT) are gauge transformations that do not vanish at infinity. Instead, they asymptotically approach arbitrary functions on the conformal sphere at infinity. Recently, it was argued that the LGT should be treated as an infinite set of global symmetries which are spontaneously broken by the vacuum. It was established that in QED, the Ward identities of their induced symmetries are equivalent to the Soft Photon Theorem. In this paper we study the implications of LGT on the S-matrix between physical asymptotic states in massive QED. In appose to the naively free scatt…
Various equivalences between so-called soft theorems which constrain scattering amplitudes and Ward identities related to asymptotic symmetries have recently been established in gauge theories and gravity. So far these equivalences have been restricted to the case of massless matter fields, the reason being that the asymptotic symmetries are defined at null infinity. The restriction is however unnatural from the perspective of soft theorems which are insensitive to the masses of the external particles. In this work we remove the aforementioned restriction in the context of scalar QED. Inspired…
The soft photon theorem in U(1) gauge theories with only massless charged particles has recently been shown to be the Ward identity of an infinite-dimensional asymptotic symmetry group. This symmetry group is comprised of gauge transformations which approach angle-dependent constants at null infinity. In this paper, we extend the analysis to all U(1) theories, including those with massive charged particles such as QED.
We consider the scattering of massless particles coupled to an abelian gauge field in 2n-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. Weinberg's soft photon theorem is recast as Ward identities for infinitely many new nontrivial symmetries of the massless QED S-matrix, with one such identity arising for each propagation direction of the soft photon. These symmetries are identified as large gauge transformations with angle-dependent gauge parameters that are constant along the null generators of null infinity. Almost all of the symmetries are spontaneously broken in the standard vacuum and the soft photons…
Stueckelberg QED with massive photon is known to be renormalizable. But the limit of the mass going to zero is interesting because it brings the resolution to infrared questions through the role of Stueckelberg field at null infinity in addition to providing new asymptotic symmetries. Such symmetries facilitate the soft photon theorems also.
An infinite number of physically nontrivial symmetries are found for abelian gauge theories with massless charged particles. They are generated by large $U(1)$ gauge transformations that asymptotically approach an arbitrary function $\varepsilon(z,\bar{z})$ on the conformal sphere at future null infinity ($\mathscr I^+$) but are independent of the retarded time. The value of $\varepsilon$ at past null infinity ($\mathscr I^-$) is determined from that on $\mathscr I^+$ by the condition that it take the same value at either end of any light ray crossing Minkowski space. The $\varepsilon\neq$ con…
It might be expected that only global symmetries are fundamental symmetries of Nature, whereas local symmetries and associated massless gauge fields could solely emerge due to spontaneous breaking of underlying spacetime symmetries involved, such as relativistic invariance and supersymmetry. This breaking, taken in the form of the nonlinear sigma-model type pattern for vector fields or superfields, puts essential restrictions on geometrical degrees of freedom of a physical field system that makes it to adjust itself in such a way that its global internal symmetry G turns into the local symmetr…
Chiral magnetic effect exists in an electron-positron strongly magnetized gas in QED. It is induced by an electric field parallel to the external field $\textbf{B}$, like that produced by the pseudovector longitudinal mode propagating along $\textbf{B}$. In the static limit, an electric pseudovector current is obtained in the lowest Landau level. We obtain a new axial anomaly expression in a medium of massive particles in the presence of $\textbf{B}$, for scattering or pair creation, similar to the usual QED axial anomaly. The effect is interesting in connection to the QCD chiral magnetic case…
We show that the asymptotic infinite dimensional enlarged gauge symmetries constructed for QED are anomalous in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. This symmetry is particularly important in particle physics for its analogy with the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) symmetries in gravity, as well as for its connection with QED soft IR theorems. This leads to observable effects, because of the induction of a new current in the material, which carries a memory of the BMS symmetry precursor.
Energy conservation in radiating processes requires, at the classical level, to take into account damping forces on the sources. These forces can be represented in terms of asymptotic data and lead to charges defined as integrals over the asymptotic boundary. For scattering processes these charges, in case of zero radiated energy, are conserved and encode the information about the sub-leading soft theorems and matching conditions. The QED version of the self forces is associated with the dependence of the differential cross section on the infrared resolution scale.
We identify infinitely many non-invertible generalized global symmetries in QED and QCD for the real world in the massless limit. In QED, while there is no conserved Noether current for the $U(1)_\text{A}$ axial symmetry because of the ABJ anomaly, for every rational angle $2πp/N$, we construct a conserved and gauge-invariant topological symmetry operator. Intuitively, it is a composition of the axial rotation and a fractional quantum Hall state coupled to the electromagnetic $U(1)$ gauge field. These conserved symmetry operators do not obey a group multiplication law, but a non-invertible fus…
We present several results on memory effects, asymptotic symmetry and soft theorems in massive QED. We first clarify in what sense the memory effects are interpreted as the charge conservation of the large gauge transformations, and derive the leading and subleading memory effects in classical electromagnetism. We also show that the sub-subleading charges are not conserved without including contributions from the spacelike infinity. Next, we study QED in the BRST formalism and show that parts of large gauge transformations are physical symmetries by justifying that they are not gauge redundanc…
