In a recent paper, the second author and Joana Cirici proved a theorem that says that given appropriate hypotheses, $n$-formality of a differential graded algebraic structure is equivalent to the existence of a chain-level lift of a homology-level degree twisting automorphism using a unit of multiplicative order at least $n$.
Here we give another proof of this result of independent interest and under slightly different hypotheses. We use the homotopy transfer theorem and an explicit inductive procedure in order to kill the higher operations. As an application of our result, we prove formality with coefficients in the $p$-adic integers of certain dg-algebras coming from hyperplane and toric arrangements and configuration spaces.
A homotopy Gerstenhaber structure on a differential graded algebra is essentially a family of operations defining a multiplication on its bar construction. We prove that the normalized singular cochain algebra of a Davis-Januszkiewicz space is formal as a homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra, for any coefficient ring. This generalizes a recent result by the author about classifying spaces of tori and also strengthens the well-known dga formality result for Davis-Januszkiewicz spaces due to the author and Notbohm-Ray. As an application, we determine the cohomology rings of free and based loop spaces o…
We study two colored operads of configurations of little $n$-disks in a unit $n$-disk, with the centers of the small disks of one color restricted to an $m$-plane, $m<n$. We compute the rational homotopy type of these \emph{extended Swiss Cheese operads} and show how they are connected to the rational homotopy types of the inclusion maps from the little $m$-disks to the little $n$-disks operad.
A first goal of this paper is to precisely relate the homotopy theories of bialgebras and $E_2$-algebras. For this, we construct a conservative and fully faithful $\infty$-functor from pointed conilpotent homotopy bialgebras to augmented $E_2$-algebras which consists in an appropriate "cobar" construction. Then we prove that the (derived) formal moduli problem of homotopy bialgebras structures on a bialgebra is equivalent to the (derived) formal moduli problem of $E_2$-algebra structures on this "cobar" construction. We show consequently that the $E_3$-algebra structure on the higher Hochschil…
For an arbitrary simplicial complex K, Davis and Januszkiewicz have defined a family of homotopy equivalent CW-complexes whose integral cohomology rings are isomorphic to the Stanley-Reisner algebra of K. Subsequently, Buchstaber and Panov gave an alternative construction (here called c(K)), which they showed to be homotopy equivalent to Davis and Januszkiewicz's examples. It is therefore natural to investigate the extent to which the homotopy type of a space is determined by having such a cohomology ring. We begin this study here, in the context of model category theory. In particular, we ext…
The framed little 2-discs operad is homotopy equivalent to the Kimura-Stasheff-Voronov cyclic operad of moduli spaces of genus zero stable curves with tangent rays at the marked points and nodes. We show that this cyclic operad is formal, meaning that its chains and its homology (the Batalin-Vilkovisky operad) are quasi-isomorphic cyclic operads. To prove this we introduce a new complex of graphs in which the differential is a combination of edge deletion and contraction, and we show that this complex resolves BV as a cyclic operad.
We prove a "purity implies formality" statement in the context of the rational homotopy theory of smooth complex algebraic varieties, and apply it to complements of hypersurface arrangements. In particular, we prove that the complement of a toric arrangement is formal. This is analogous to the classical formality theorem for complements of hyperplane arrangements, due to Brieskorn, and generalizes a theorem of De Concini and Procesi.
A homotopical treatment of intersection cohomology recently developed by Chataur-Saralegui-Tanré associates a "perverse algebraic model" to every topological pseudomanifold, extending Sullivan's presentation of rational homotopy to intersection cohomology. In this context, there is a notion of "intersection-formality", measuring the vanishing of Massey products in intersection cohomology. In the present paper, we study the perverse algebraic model of complex projective varieties with isolated singularities. We endow such invariant with natural mixed Hodge structures. This allows us to prove so…
An action of a compact Lie group is called equivariantly formal, if the Leray--Serre spectral sequence of its Borel fibration degenerates at the E_2-term. This term is as prominent as it is restrictive. In this article, also motivated by the lack of junction between the notion of equivariant formality and the concept of formality of spaces (surging from rational homotopy theory) we suggest two new variations of equivariant formality: "MOD-formal actions" and "actions of formal core". We investigate and characterize these new terms in many different ways involving various tools from rational ho…
We define and construct mixed Hodge structures on real schematic homotopy types of complex projective varieties, giving mixed Hodge structures on their homotopy groups and pro-algebraic fundamental groups. We also show that these split on tensoring with the ring R[x] equipped with the Hodge filtration given by powers of (x-i), giving new results even for simply connected varieties. Thus the mixed Hodge structures can be recovered from cohomology groups of local systems, together with the monodromy action at the Archimedean place. As the basepoint varies, these all become real variations of mix…
We define and construct mixed Hodge structures on real schematic homotopy types of complex quasi-projective varieties, giving mixed Hodge structures on their homotopy groups and pro-algebraic fundamental groups. We also show that these split on tensoring with the ring R[x] equipped with the Hodge filtration given by powers of (x-i), giving new results even for simply connected varieties. The mixed Hodge structures can thus be recovered from the Gysin spectral sequence of cohomology groups of local systems, together with the monodromy action at the Archimedean place. As the basepoint varies, th…
Let $X$ be a simply connected path connected topological space which is formal in the sense of rational homotopy theory. Let $Y=X\cup_α\mathbb{D}^{n}$ where $α:\mathbb{S}^{n-1}\to X$ is a non-torsion element. Then we obtain a condition on $α$ for the formality of $Y$. We give several illustrative examples concerning the formality of a finite CW complex having only even dimensional cells. This is the corrected version of the earlier version which contained a serious error in Theorem 1.4. This theorem, which now Theorem 1.1 of this version, has now been corrected. The proofs of Theorems 1.1, 1.2…
In this paper we prove that the structure of strong homotopy properad transfers over left homotopy inverses and give explicit formulae for the induced structure.
We give explicit formulas for transfers of $A_\infty$-structures and related maps and homotopies in the most easy situation in which these transfers exist. One half of our formulas was already known to Kontsevich-Soibelman and to Merkulov who derived them, without explicit signs, under slightly stronger assumptions than those made in this note.
By using homotopy transfer techniques in the context of rational homotopy theory, we show that if $C$ is a coalgebra model of a space $X$, then the $A_\infty$-coalgebra structure in $H_*(X;\mathbb{Q})\cong H_*(C)$ induced by the higher Massey coproducts provides the construction of the Quillen minimal model of $X$. We also describe an explicit $L_\infty$-structure on the complex of linear maps ${\rm Hom}(H_*(X; \mathbb{Q}), π_*(ΩY)\otimes\mathbb{Q})$, where $X$ is a finite nilpotent CW-complex and $Y$ is a nilpotent CW-complex of finite type, modeling the rational homotopy type of the mapping …
We characterize $A_\infty$-structures that are transfers over a chain homotopy equivalence or a quasi-isomorphism, answering a question posed by D. Sullivan. Along the way, we present an obstruction theory for weak $A_\infty$-morphisms over an arbitrary commutative ring. We then generalize our results to ${\mathcal P}_\infty$-structures over a field of characteristic zero, for any quadratic Koszul operad ${\mathcal P}$.
The present article is devoted to the study of transfers for $A_\infty$ structures, their maps and homotopies, as developed in \cite{Markl06}. In particular, we supply the proofs of claims formulated therein and provide their extension by comparing them with the former approach based on the homological perturbation lemma.
The Becker-Gottlieb transfer gives a wrong-way map on suspension spectra for maps of spaces whose homotopy fibres are retracts of finite complexes. We prove that this construction is contravariantly functorial on the homotopy category level.
We show that the Waldhausen trace map $\mathrm{Tr}_X \colon A(X) \to QX_+$, which defines a natural splitting map from the algebraic $K$-theory of spaces to stable homotopy, is natural up to \emph{weak} homotopy with respect to transfer maps in algebraic $K$-theory and Becker-Gottlieb transfer maps respectively.
We show that an A-infinity algebra structure can be transferred to a projective resolution of the complex underlying any A-infinity algebra. Under certain connectedness assumptions, this transferred structure is unique up to homotopy. In contrast to the classical results on transfer of A-infinity structures along homotopy equivalences, our result is of interest when the ground ring is not a field. We prove an analog for A-infinity module structures, and both transfer results preserve strict units.
