We carry out a principal component analysis of fluctuations in a hydrodynamic simulation of heavy-ion collisions, and compare with experimental data from the CMS collaboration. The leading and subleading principal components of elliptic and triangular flow reproduce the trends seen in data. By contrast, the principal components of multiplicity fluctuations show an interesting difference in their $p_T$ dependence for simulations compared to experimental data. Specifically, the leading component increases with $p_T$ in hydrodynamics, while it is constant in experiment. In order to understand how the leading and subleading modes arise, we construct a toy model where the principal components have a simple analytic form. We show how the PCA components depend on fluctuations of the average transverse momentum and of the total multiplicity, as well as correlations between the two, and we verify that hydrodynamic simulations agree with the predictions of the toy model. The difference in the momentum trend is likely due to the fact that hydrodynamic models typically have transverse momentum fluctuations that are larger than seen experimentally.
We use principal component analysis to study the hydrodynamic attractor in Yang-Mills kinetic theory undergoing the Bjorken expansion with Color Glass Condensate initial conditions. The late time hydrodynamic attractor is characterized by a single principal component determining the overall energy scale. How it is reached is governed by the disappearance of single subleading principal component characterizing deviations of the pressure anisotropy, the screening mass and the scattering rate. We find that for wide range of couplings the approach to the hydrodynamic attractor at late times is wel…
Relativistic dissipative hydrodynamic model at finite density is a promising tool for analyzing the dense QCD matter created in the beam energy scan experiments. The hydrodynamic frame can be chosen in the direction of energy flow, which is called the Landau frame, or conserved charge flow, which is called the Eckart frame. In this study, I investigate the stability and causality of full second-order relativistic hydrodynamic equations in the two frames. Then the effects of frame choice on hydrodynamic variables and experimental observables are estimated numerically and are found to be visible…
We propose a redefinition of the principal component analysis (PCA) of anisotropic flow that makes it more directly connected to fluctuations of the initial geometry of the system. Then, using state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations, we make an explicit connection between flow fluctuations and a cumulant expansion of the initial transverse geometry. In particular, we show that the second principal component of elliptic flow is generated by higher-order cumulants, and therefore probes smaller length scales of the initial state. With this information, it will be possible to put new constraints…
We perform a principal component analysis (PCA) of $v_3(p_T)$ in event-by-event hydrodynamic simulations of Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The PCA procedure identifies two dominant contributions to the two-particle correlation function, which together capture 99.9\% of the squared variance. We find that the subleading flow (which is the largest source of flow factorization breaking in hydrodynamics) is predominantly a response to the radial excitations of a third-order eccentricity. We present a systematic study of the hydrodynamic response to these radial excitations in …
The principal component analysis of flow correlations in heavy-ion collisions is studied. The correlation matrix of harmonic flow is generalized to correlations involving several different flow vectors. The method can be applied to study the nonlinear coupling between different harmonic modes in a double differential way in transverse momentum or pseudorapidity. The procedure is illustrated with results from the hydrodynamic model applied to Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2760$GeV. Three examples of generalized correlations matrices in transverse momentum are constructed corresponding to the co…
Numerical Analyses of CERN 200GeV/A Heavy-Ion Collisions Based on a Hydrodynamical Model with Phase Transition
In this paper, we implement Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to study the single particle distributions generated from thousands of {\tt VISH2+1} hydrodynamic simulations with an aim to explore if a machine could directly discover flow from the huge amount of data without explicit instructions from human-beings. We found that the obtained PCA eigenvectors are similar to but not identical with the traditional Fourier bases. Correspondingly, the PCA defined flow harmonics $v_n^\prime$ are also similar to the traditional $v_n$ for $n=2$ and 3, but largely deviated from the Fourier ones for $n\g…
Higher harmonics of anisotropic flow ($v_n$ with $n\ge 4$) in heavy-ion collisions can be measured either with respect to their own plane, or with respect to a plane constructed using lower-order harmonics. We explain how such measurements are related to event-plane correlations. We show that CMS data on $v_4$ and $v_6$ are compatible with ATLAS data on event-plane correlations. If one assumes that higher harmonics are the superposition of non-linear and linear responses, then the linear and non-linear parts can be isolated under fairly general assumptions. By combining analyses of higher harm…
We discuss rapidity decorrelation caused by hydrodynamic fluctuations in high-energy nuclear collisions at the LHC energy. We employ an integrated dynamical model which is a combination of the Monte Carlo version of Glauber model with extension to longitudinal direction for initial conditions, full three-dimensional relativistic fluctuating hydrodynamics for the space-time evolution of created matter in the intermediate stage and a hadronic cascade model in the late stage. We switch on and off the hydrodynamic fluctuations in the hydrodynamic stage to understand the effects of hydrodynamic flu…
Anomalous hydrodynamics is a low-energy effective theory that captures effects of quantum anomalies. We develop a numerical code of anomalous hydrodynamics and apply it to dynamics of heavy-ion collisions, where anomalous transports are expected to occur. This is the first attempt to perform fully non-linear numerical simulations of anomalous hydrodynamics. We discuss implications of the simulations for possible experimental observations of anomalous transport effects. From analyses of the charge-dependent elliptic flow parameters ($v_2^\pm$) as a function of the net charge asymmetry $A_\pm$, …
Principal Component Analysis (PCA) via Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of large datasets is an adaptive exploratory method to uncover natural patterns underlying the data. Several recent applications of the PCA-SVD to event-by-event single-particle azimuthal angle distribution matrices in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC-LHC energies indicate that the sine and cosine functions chosen {\it a priori} in the traditional Fourier analysis are naturally the most optimal basis for azimuthal flow studies according to the data itself. We perform PCA-SVD analyses of mid-central Au+Au c…
We analyze the spectrum of harmonic flow, $v_n(p_T)$ for $n=0\text{--}5$, in event-by-event hydrodynamic simulations of Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76\,{\text{TeV}}$) with principal component analysis (PCA). The PCA procedure finds two dominant contributions to the two-particle correlation function. The leading component is identified with the event plane $v_n(p_T)$, while the subleading component is responsible for factorization breaking in hydrodynamics. For $v_0$, $v_1$, and $v_3$ the subleading flow is a response to the radial excitation of the corr…
A new exact and analytic solution of non-relativistic fireball hydrodynamics is presented. It describes an expanding triaxial ellipsoid that rotates around one of its principal axes. The observables are calculated using simple analytic formulas. Azimuthal oscillation of the off-diagonal Bertsch-Pratt radii of Bose-Einstein correlations as well as rapidity dependent directed and third flow measurements provide means to determine the magnitude of the rotation of the fireball. Observing this rotation and its dependence on collision energy may lead to new information on the equation of state of th…
Effect of viscosity on one dimensional hydrodynamic flow and direct photons from 200 AGeV S+Au collisions at CERN SPS
We investigate the interplay between hydrodynamic fluctuations and initial longitudinal fluctuations for their effects on the rapidity decorrelation of collective flow in high-energy nuclear collisions. We use a (3+1)-dimensional integrated dynamical model in which we combine initial conditions with longitudinal fluctuations, fluctuating hydrodynamics and hadronic cascades. We analyse the factorisation ratio in the longitudinal direction to study the effect of these fluctuations on the rapidity decorrelation. We find an essential difference between the effects of the hydrodynamic fluctuations …
We present a Principal Component Analysis for a hydrodynamic simulation and compare with CMS experimental data. While the results are reasonable for anisotropic flow, for multiplicity fluctuations they are qualitatively different. We argue that this is due to too large transverse momentum ($p_T$) fluctuations and $N-p_T$ covariance in the simulation than seen experimentally. In turn this is related to too large initial size fluctuations.
It has been discovered in recent heavy-ion experiments that elliptic and triangular flow of direct photons are underpredicted by most hydrodynamic models. I discuss possible enhancement mechanisms based on late chemical equilibration of the QGP and in-medium modification of parton distributions. Numerical hydrodynamic analyses indicate that they suppress early photon emission and visibly enhance thermal photon elliptic flow.
