Standard analysis pipelines for measurements of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) in galaxy surveys make use of a fiducial cosmological model to guide the data compression required to transform from observed redshifts and angles to the measured angular and radial BAO peak positions. In order to remove any dependence on the fiducial cosmology from the results, all models compared to the data should mimic the compression and its dependence on the fiducial model. In practice, approximations are made when testing models: (1) There is assumed to be no residual dependence on the fiducial cosmology after reconstruction, (2) differences in the distance--redshift relationship are assumed to match a linear scaling, and (3) differences in clustering between true and fiducial models are assumed to be removed by the free parameters used to null the non-BAO signal. We test these approximations using the current standard measurement procedure with a set of halo catalogs from the {\sc Aemulus} suite of $N$-body simulations, which span a range of $w\mathrm{CDM}$ cosmological models. We focus on reconstruction of the primordial BAO and locating the BAO. For the range of $w\mathrm{CDM}$ cosmologies covered by the {\sc Aemulus} suite, we find no evidence for systematic errors in the measured BAO shift parameters $α_{\parallel}$ and $α_{\bot}$ to $< 0.1\%$. However, the measured errors $σ_{α_{\parallel}}$ and $σ_{α_{\bot}}$ show a notable absolute increase by up to $+0.001$ and $+0.002$ respectively in the case that the fiducial cosmology does not match the truth. These effects on the inferred BAO scale will be important given the precision of measurements expected from future surveys including DESI, Euclid, and WFIRST.
The process of density field reconstruction enhances the statistical power of distance scale measurements using baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). During this process a fiducial cosmology is assumed in order to convert sky coordinates and redshifts into distances; fiducial bias and redshift-space-distortion parameters are also assumed in this procedure. We analytically assess the impact of incorrect cosmology and bias assumptions on the post-reconstruction power spectra using low-order Lagrangian perturbation theory, deriving general expressions for the incorrectly reconstructed spectra. We f…

We revise observational constraints on the class of models of modified gravity which at low redshifts lead to a power-law cosmology. To this end we use available public data on Supernova Ia and on baryon acoustic oscillations. We show that the expansion regime $a(t) \sim t^β$ with $β$ close to 3/2 a spatially flat universe is a good fit to these data.
An important problem in precision cosmology is the determination of the effects of averaging and backreaction on observational predictions, particularly in view of the wealth of new observational data and improved statistical techniques. In this paper, we discuss the observational viability of a class of averaged cosmologies which consist of a simple parametrized phenomenological two-scale backreaction model with decoupled spatial curvature parameters. We perform a Bayesian model selection analysis and find that this class of averaged phenomenological cosmological models is favored with respec…
With the remarkable increase in scale and precision provided by upcoming galaxy redshift surveys, systematic errors that were previously negligible may become significant. In this paper, we explore the potential impact of low-magnitude systematic redshift offsets on measurements of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) feature, and the cosmological constraints recovered from such measurements. Using 500 mock galaxy redshift surveys as our baseline sample, we inject a series of systematic redshift biases (ranging from +/-0.2% to +/-2%), and measure the resulting shift in the recovered isotropic…
Third-order statistics of the cosmic density field provides a powerful cosmological probe containing synergistic information to the more commonly explored second-order statistics. Here, we exploit a spectroscopic catalog of 72,563 clusters of galaxies extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, providing the first detection of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) peak in the three-point correlation function (3PCF) of galaxy clusters. We measure and analyze both the connected and the reduced 3PCF of SDSS clusters from intermediate ($r\sim10$ Mpc/h) up to large ($r\sim140$ Mpc/h) scales, expl…
During this work, an interacting chameleon like scalar field scenario, by considering SNeIa, CMB, BAO and OHD data sets is investigated. In fact, the investigation is realized by introducing an ansatz for the effective dark energy equation of state, which mimics the behaviour of chameleon like models. Based on this assumption, some cosmological parameters including Hubble, deceleration and coincidence parameters in such mechanism are analysed. It is realized that, to estimate the free parameters of a theoretical model, by regarding the systematic errors it better the whole of the above observa…
Massive gravity in the presence of doubly coupled matter field via en effective composite metric yields an accelerated expansion of the universe. It has been recently shown that the model admits stable de Sitter attractor solutions and could be used as a dark energy model. In this work, we perform a first analysis of the constraints imposed by the SNIa, BAO and CMB data on the massive gravity model with the effective composite metric and show that all the background observations are mutually compatible at the one sigma level with the model.

We consider an alternative to conventional three-point statistics such as the bispectrum, which is purely based on the Fourier phases of the density field: the line correlation function. This statistic directly probes the non-linear clustering regime and contains information highly complementary to that contained in the power spectrum. In this work, we determine, for the first time, its potential to constrain cosmological parameters and detect baryon acoustic oscillations (hereafter BAOs). We show how to compute the line correlation function for a discrete sampled set of tracers that follow a …
We propose a new consistency test for the $Λ$CDM cosmology using baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) and redshift space distortion (RSD) measurements from galaxy redshift surveys. Specifically, we determine the peak position of $fσ_8(z)$ in redshift $z$ offered by a RSD measurement, and compare it to the one predicted by the BAO observables assuming a flat $Λ$CDM cosmology. We demonstrate this new test using the simulated data for the DESI galaxy survey, and argue that this test complements those using the background observables alone, and is less subject to systematics in the RSD analysis, c…
We investigate the cosmology of SO(3)-invariant massive gravity with 5 degrees of freedom. In contrast with previous studies, we allow for a non-trivial fiducial metric, which can be justified by invoking, for example, a dilaton-like global symmetry. We write the homogeneous and isotropic equations of motion in this more general setup and identify, in particular, de Sitter solutions. We then study the linear perturbations around the homogeneous cosmological solutions, by deriving the quadratic Lagrangian governing the dynamics of scalar, vector and tensor modes. We thus obtain the conditions f…
We propose a new method for fitting the full-shape of the Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) forest three-dimensional (3D) correlation function in order to measure the Alcock-Paczynski (AP) effect. Our method preserves the robustness of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) analyses, while also providing extra cosmological information from a broader range of scales. We compute idealized forecasts for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) using the Ly$α$ auto-correlation and its cross-correlation with quasars, and show how this type of analysis improves cosmological constraints. The DESI Ly$α$ BAO analys…
The Universe is currently undergoing accelerated expansion driven by dark energy. Dark energy's essential nature remains mysterious: one means of revealing it is by measuring the Universe's size at different redshifts. This may be done using the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) feature, a standard ruler in the galaxy 2-Point Correlation Function (2PCF). In order to measure the distance scale, one dilates and contracts a template for the 2PCF in a fiducial cosmology, using a scaling factor $α$. The standard method for finding the best-fit $α$ is to compute the likelihood over a grid of roughly…
We investigate observational constraints on cosmological parameters combining 15 measurements of the transversal BAO scale (obtained free of any fiducial cosmology) with Planck-CMB data to explore the parametric space of some cosmological models. We investigate how much Planck + transversal BAO data can constraint the minimum $Λ$CDM model, and extensions, including neutrinos mass scale $M_ν$, and the possibility for a dynamical dark energy (DE) scenario. Assuming the $Λ$CDM cosmology, we find $H_0 = 69.23 \pm 0.50$ km s${}^{-1}$ Mpc${}^{-1}$, $M_ν < 0.11$ eV and $r_{\rm drag} = 147.59 \pm 0.26…
We illustrate that $Λ$MOND cosmology following from E. Verlinde's emergent gravity idea which contains only constant dark energy and baryonic matters governed by linear inverse gravitation forces at and beyond galaxy scales fit with the luminosity distance v.s. redshift relationship, i.e. $d_\ell(z)$ of type Ia supernovae equally well as the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology does. But in a rather broad and reasonable parameter space, $Λ$MOND gives too strong baryon acoustic oscillation, i.e. BAO signals on the matter power spectrum contradicting with observations from various galaxy survey and countin…
Despite the ability of the cosmological concordance model ($Λ$CDM) to describe the cosmological observations exceedingly well, power law expansion of the Universe scale radius, $R(t)\propto t^n$, has been proposed as an alternative framework. We examine here these models, analyzing their ability to fit cosmological data using robust model comparison criteria. Type Ia supernovae (SNIa), baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) and acoustic scale information from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) have been used. We find that SNIa data either alone or combined with BAO can be well reproduced by b…
Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), known as one of the largest cosmological objects, is now recognized as standard cosmological tool to measure geometric distances via the Alcock-Paczynski effect, by which the observed BAO exhibits characteristic anisotropies in addition to the redshift distortions. This implies that once we know the correct distances to the observed BAO, the tip points of baryon acoustic peaks in the anisotropic correlation function of galaxies, $ξ(σ,π)$, can form a great circle (hereafter 2D BAO circle) in the $σ$ and $π$ plane, where $σ$ and $π$ are the separation of galax…
Non-zero neutrino mass would affect the evolution of the Universe in observable ways, and a strong constraint on the mass can be achieved using combinations of cosmological data sets. We focus on the power spectrum of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies, the Hubble constant H_0, and the length scale for baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) to investigate the constraint on the neutrino mass, m_nu. We analyze data from multiple existing CMB studies (WMAP5, ACBAR, CBI, BOOMERANG, and QUAD), recent measurement of H_0 (SHOES), with about two times lower uncertainty (5%) than previous estim…
Following the success of type Ia supernovae in constraining cosmologies at lower redshift $(z\lesssim2)$, effort has been spent determining if a similarly useful standardisable candle can be found at higher redshift. {In this work we determine the largest possible magnitude discrepancy between a constant dark energy $Λ$CDM cosmology and a cosmology in which the equation of state $w(z)$ of dark energy is a function of redshift for high redshift standard candles $(z\gtrsim2)$}. We discuss a number of popular parametrisations of $w(z)$ with two free parameters, $w_z$CDM cosmologies, including the…
We explore and compare the capabilities of the recent observations of standard cosmological probes and the future observations of gravitational-wave (GW) standard sirens on constraining cosmological parameters. It is carried out in the frameworks of two typical dynamical models of cosmology, i.e., the $ω_0ω_a$CDM model with $ω(z) = ω_0 +ω_a*z/(1+z)$, and the $ξ$-index model with $ρ_X\proptoρ_ma^ξ$, where $ω(z)$ is the dark energy equation of state, and $ρ_X$ and $ρ_m$ are the energy densities of dark energy and matter, respectively. In the cosmological analysis, the employed data sets include …
We analyse some open debates in cosmology in light of the most updated quasar (QSO) sample, covering a wide redshift range up to $z\sim7.5$, combined with type Ia supernovae (SNe) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). Indeed, extending the cosmological analyses with high-redshift data is key to distinguishing between different cosmological models that are degenerate at low redshifts, and allowing better constraints on a possible dark energy (DE) evolution. Also, we discuss combinations of BAO, SNe, and QSO data to understand their compatibility and implications for extensions of the standard…
Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) provide a robust standard ruler, and can be used to constrain the expansion history of the Universe at low redshift. Standard BAO analyses return a model-independent measurement of the expansion rate and the comoving angular diameter distance as function of redshift, normalized by the sound horizon at radiation drag. However, this methodology relies on anisotropic distance distortions of a fixed, pre-computed template (obtained in a given fiducial cosmology) in order to fit the observations. Therefore, it may be possible that extensions to the consensus $Λ$CD…

Galaxy clusters --- in combination with CMB and BAO data --- can provide precise constraints on the sum of neutrino masses. However, these constraints depend on the calibration of the mass--observable relation. For instance, the mass calibration employed in Planck Collaboration (2011a,b) rules out the minimal 6-parameter ΛCDM model at 3.7σ, and implies a sum of neutrino masses \sum m_ν= 0.39 \pm 0.10. By contrast, the mass calibration favored by Rozo et al. (2012b) from a self-consistent analysis of X-ray, SZ, and optical scaling relations is consistent with a minimal flat ΛCDM model with no m…
Late-time power law expansion has been proposed as an alternative to the standard cosmological model and shown to be consistent with some low-redshift data. We test power law expansion against the standard flat $Λ$CDM cosmology using goodness-of-fit and model comparison criteria. We consider Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) data from two current compilations (JLA and Union2.1) along with a current set of baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements that includes the high-redshift Lyman-$α$ forest measurements from BOSS quasars. We find that neither power law expansion nor $Λ$CDM is strongly preferr…
We review some of the major contributions that the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) will provide for Cosmology. We discuss the SKA measurements of the equation of state parameter for dark energy from Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), of the dark matter power spectrum and modifications of the Poisson equation or the slip relation from weak lensing. We also comment on measurements of the cosmic magnetism and its role on the dynamics of the Universe.
At variance from 2H, 3He and 4He abundances, 7Li abundance data yield an extra constraint to cosmological parameters, in top of those deriving from CMB, BAO, SNIa or H0 data. This constraint, often disregarded, would favor smaller $Ω_b h^2$ values, also indicating a preference for Dark Energy state equations well in the phantom regime, simultaneously softening the upper limit on the sum of neutrino masses, up to ~1.6eV.
We investigate observational constraints on the normal branch of the warped DGP braneworld cosmology by using observational data from Type Ia Supernovae (SNIa), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Baryon Gas Mass Fraction of cluster of galaxies. The best fit values of model free parameters are: $Ω_m=0.240^{+0.050}_{-0.130}$ and $Ω_{r_c}=0.000^{+0.014}$ at $1σ$ confidence interval by using Gold sample SNIa+CMB shift parameter+BAO+Gas mass fraction of baryons in cluster of galaxies. The results for essence sample SNIa combined with CMB shift parameter, BAO a…
We present a new cosmological test using the distribution of galaxies around cosmic voids without assuming a fiducial cosmology. The test is based on a physical model for the void-galaxy cross-correlation function projected along and perpendicular to the line of sight. We treat correlations in terms of void-centric angular distances and redshift differences between void-galaxy pairs, hence it is not necessary to assume a fiducial cosmology. This model reproduces the coupled dynamical (Kaiser effect, RSD) and geometrical (Alcock-Paczynski effect, GD) distortions that affect the correlation meas…
In this paper, we investigate the Ricci dark energy model with perturbations through the joint constraints of current cosmological data sets from dynamical and geometrical perspectives. We use the full cosmic microwave background information from WMAP seven-year data, the baryon acoustic oscillations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Two Degree Galaxy Redshift Survey, and type Ia supernovae from the Union2 compilation of the Supernova Cosmology Project Collaboration. A global constraint is performed by employing the Markov chain Monte Carlo method. With the best-fitting results, we sho…
Nonstandard self-interactions can alter the evolution of cosmological neutrinos, mainly by damping free streaming, which should leave traces in cosmological observables. Although overall effects are opposite to those produced by neutrino mass and a larger $N_{\rm eff}$, they cannot be totally canceled by these last. We harness cosmological data that includes Cosmic Microwave Background from Plank 2018, BAO measurements, local $H_0$, Ly-$α$ and SNIa, to constrain massive neutrino self-interactions with a very light scalar mediator. We find that the effective coupling constant, at the 95\% C.L.,…
We investigate - in a generic setting - the regime of applicability of the Alcock-Paczynski (AP) scaling conventionally applied to test different cosmological models, given a fiducial measurement of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) characteristic scale in the galaxy 2-point correlation function. We quantify the error in conventional AP scaling methods, for which our ignorance about the true cosmology is parameterised in terms of two constant AP scaling parameters. We propose a new, and as it turns out, improved version of the constant AP scaling, also consisting of two scaling parameters.…

We study the predictions for structure formation in an induced gravity dark energy model with a quartic potential. By developing a dedicated Einstein-Boltzmann code, we study self-consistently the dynamics of homogeneous cosmology and of linear perturbations without using any parametrization. By evolving linear perturbations with initial conditions in the radiation era, we accurately recover the quasi-static analytic approximation in the matter dominated era. We use Planck 2013 data and a compilation of baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) data to constrain the coupling $γ$ to the Ricci curvatu…
We explore extensions to the $Λ$CDM cosmology using measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from the recent SPT-SZ survey, along with data from WMAP7 and measurements of $H_0$ and BAO. We check for consistency within $Λ$CDM between these datasets, and find some tension. The CMB alone gives weak support to physics beyond $Λ$CDM, due to a slight trend relative to $Λ$CDM of decreasing power towards smaller angular scales. While it may be due to statistical fluctuation, this trend could also be explained by several extensions. We consider running index (nrun), as well as two extensio…
We apply the Velocity Distribution Function (VDF) to a sample of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ)-selected clusters, and we report preliminary cosmological constraints in the $σ_8$-$Ω_m$ cosmological parameter space. The VDF is a forward-modeled test statistic that can be used to constrain cosmological models directly from galaxy cluster dynamical observations. The method was introduced in Ntampaka et al. (2017) and employs line-of-sight velocity measurements to directly constrain cosmological parameters; it is less sensitive to measurement error than a standard halo mass function approach. The method …
