Cross-domain synthesizing realistic faces to learn deep models has attracted increasing attention for facial expression analysis as it helps to improve the performance of expression recognition accuracy despite having small number of real training images. However, learning from synthetic face images can be problematic due to the distribution discrepancy between low-quality synthetic images and real face images and may not achieve the desired performance when the learned model applies to real world scenarios. To this end, we propose a new attribute guided face image synthesis to perform a translation between multiple image domains using a single model. In addition, we adopt the proposed model to learn from synthetic faces by matching the feature distributions between different domains while preserving each domain's characteristics. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach on several face datasets on generating realistic face images. We demonstrate that the expression recognition performance can be enhanced by benefiting from our face synthesis model. Moreover, we also conduct experiments on a near-infrared dataset containing facial expression videos of drivers to assess the performance using in-the-wild data for driver emotion recognition.
Editing and retouching facial attributes is a complex task that usually requires human artists to obtain photo-realistic results. Its applications are numerous and can be found in several contexts such as cosmetics or digital media retouching, to name a few. Recently, advancements in conditional generative modeling have shown astonishing results at modifying facial attributes in a realistic manner. However, current methods are still prone to artifacts, and focus on modifying global attributes like age and gender, or local mid-sized attributes like glasses or moustaches. In this work, we revisi…
Generating photorealistic images of human faces at scale remains a prohibitively difficult task using computer graphics approaches. This is because these require the simulation of light to be photorealistic, which in turn requires physically accurate modelling of geometry, materials, and light sources, for both the head and the surrounding scene. Non-photorealistic renders however are increasingly easy to produce. In contrast to computer graphics approaches, generative models learned from more readily available 2D image data have been shown to produce samples of human faces that are hard to di…

Current facial expression recognition methods fail to simultaneously cope with pose and subject variations. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised adversarial domain adaptation method which can alleviate both variations at the same time. Specially, our method consists of three learning strategies: adversarial domain adaptation learning, cross adversarial feature learning, and reconstruction learning. The first aims to learn pose- and expression-related feature representations in the source domain and adapt both feature distributions to that of the target domain by imposing adversarial …

Detecting facial action units (AU) is one of the fundamental steps in automatic recognition of facial expression of emotions and cognitive states. Though there have been a variety of approaches proposed for this task, most of these models are trained only for the specific target AUs, and as such they fail to easily adapt to the task of recognition of new AUs (i.e., those not initially used to train the target models). In this paper, we propose a deep learning approach for facial AU detection that can easily and in a fast manner adapt to a new AU or target subject by leveraging only a few label…

Bringing empathy to a computerized system could significantly improve the quality of human-computer communications, as soon as machines would be able to understand customer intentions and better serve their needs. According to different studies (Literature Review), visual information is one of the most important channels of human interaction and contains significant behavioral signals, that may be captured from facial expressions. Therefore, it is consistent and natural that the research in the field of Facial Expression Recognition (FER) has acquired increased interest over the past decade du…
Since photorealistic faces can be readily generated by facial manipulation technologies nowadays, potential malicious abuse of these technologies has drawn great concerns. Numerous deepfake detection methods are thus proposed. However, existing methods only focus on detecting one-step facial manipulation. As the emergence of easy-accessible facial editing applications, people can easily manipulate facial components using multi-step operations in a sequential manner. This new threat requires us to detect a sequence of facial manipulations, which is vital for both detecting deepfake media and re…

We present a novel approach for supervised domain adaptation that is based upon the probabilistic framework of Gaussian processes (GPs). Specifically, we introduce domain-specific GPs as local experts for facial expression classification from face images. The adaptation of the classifier is facilitated in probabilistic fashion by conditioning the target expert on multiple source experts. Furthermore, in contrast to existing adaptation approaches, we also learn a target expert from available target data solely. Then, a single and confident classifier is obtained by combining the predictions fro…

Photorealistic facial expression synthesis from single face image can be widely applied to face recognition, data augmentation for emotion recognition or entertainment. This problem is challenging, in part due to a paucity of labeled facial expression data, making it difficult for algorithms to disambiguate changes due to identity and changes due to expression. In this paper, we propose the conditional difference adversarial autoencoder, CDAAE, for facial expression synthesis. The CDAAE takes a facial image of a previously unseen person and generates an image of that human face with a target e…
Semantic face editing of real world facial images is an important application of generative models. Recently, multiple works have explored possible techniques to generate such modifications using the latent structure of pre-trained GAN models. However, such approaches often require training an encoder network and that is typically a time-consuming and resource intensive process. A possible alternative to such a GAN-based architecture can be styleALAE, a latent-space based autoencoder that can generate photo-realistic images of high quality. Unfortunately, the reconstructed image in styleALAE d…

We propose a novel end-to-end semi-supervised adversarial framework to generate photorealistic face images of new identities with wide ranges of expressions, poses, and illuminations conditioned by a 3D morphable model. Previous adversarial style-transfer methods either supervise their networks with large volume of paired data or use unpaired data with a highly under-constrained two-way generative framework in an unsupervised fashion. We introduce pairwise adversarial supervision to constrain two-way domain adaptation by a small number of paired real and synthetic images for training along wit…

We lay the groundwork for research in the algorithmic comprehension of infant faces, in anticipation of applications from healthcare to psychology, especially in the early prediction of developmental disorders. Specifically, we introduce the first-ever dataset of infant faces annotated with facial landmark coordinates and pose attributes, demonstrate the inadequacies of existing facial landmark estimation algorithms in the infant domain, and train new state-of-the-art models that significantly improve upon those algorithms using domain adaptation techniques. We touch on the closely related tas…
We propose an approach for unsupervised domain adaptation for the task of estimating someone's age from a given face image. In order to avoid the propagation of racial bias in most publicly available face image datasets into the inefficacy of models trained on them, we perform domain adaptation to motivate the predictor to learn features that are invariant to ethnicity, enhancing the generalization performance across faces of people from different ethnic backgrounds. Exploiting the ordinality of age, we also impose ranking constraints on the prediction of the model and design our model such th…

Machine learning is driven by data, yet while their availability is constantly increasing, training data require laborious, time consuming and error-prone labelling or ground truth acquisition, which in some cases is very difficult or even impossible. Recent works have resorted to synthetic data generation, but the inferior performance of models trained on synthetic data when applied to the real world, introduced the challenge of unsupervised domain adaptation. In this work we investigate an unsupervised domain adaptation technique that descends from another perspective, in order to avoid the …
Caricature attributes provide distinctive facial features to help research in Psychology and Neuroscience. However, unlike the facial photo attribute datasets that have a quantity of annotated images, the annotations of caricature attributes are rare. To facility the research in attribute learning of caricatures, we propose a caricature attribute dataset, namely WebCariA. Moreover, to utilize models that trained by face attributes, we propose a novel unsupervised domain adaptation framework for cross-modality (i.e., photos to caricatures) attribute recognition, with an integrated inter- and in…
Synthetic images rendered from 3D CAD models are useful for augmenting training data for object recognition algorithms. However, the generated images are non-photorealistic and do not match real image statistics. This leads to a large domain discrepancy, causing models trained on synthetic data to perform poorly on real domains. Recent work has shown the great potential of deep convolutional neural networks to generate realistic images, but has not utilized generative models to address synthetic-to-real domain adaptation. In this work, we propose a Deep Generative Correlation Alignment Network…
While the performance of face recognition systems has improved significantly in the last decade, they are proved to be highly vulnerable to presentation attacks (spoofing). Most of the research in the field of face presentation attack detection (PAD), was focused on boosting the performance of the systems within a single database. Face PAD datasets are usually captured with RGB cameras, and have very limited number of both bona-fide samples and presentation attack instruments. Training face PAD systems on such data leads to poor performance, even in the closed-set scenario, especially when sop…

Some tasks, such as surface normals or single-view depth estimation, require per-pixel ground truth that is difficult to obtain on real images but easy to obtain on synthetic. However, models learned on synthetic images often do not generalize well to real images due to the domain shift. Our key idea to improve domain adaptation is to introduce a separate anchor task (such as facial landmarks) whose annotations can be obtained at no cost or are already available on both synthetic and real datasets. To further leverage the implicit relationship between the anchor and main tasks, we apply our \f…

Deep Neural Network (DNN) has recently achieved outstanding performance in a variety of computer vision tasks, including facial attribute classification. The great success of classifying facial attributes with DNN often relies on a massive amount of labelled data. However, in real-world applications, labelled data are only provided for some commonly used attributes (such as age, gender); whereas, unlabelled data are available for other attributes (such as attraction, hairline). To address the above problem, we propose a novel deep transfer neural network method based on multi-label learning fo…

Recovering a photorealistic face from an artistic portrait is a challenging task since crucial facial details are often distorted or completely lost in artistic compositions. To handle this loss, we propose an Attribute-guided Face Recovery from Portraits (AFRP) that utilizes a Face Recovery Network (FRN) and a Discriminative Network (DN). FRN consists of an autoencoder with residual block-embedded skip-connections and incorporates facial attribute vectors into the feature maps of input portraits at the bottleneck of the autoencoder. DN has multiple convolutional and fully-connected layers, an…

Automatically understanding emotions from visual data is a fundamental task for human behaviour understanding. While models devised for Facial Expression Recognition (FER) have demonstrated excellent performances on many datasets, they often suffer from severe performance degradation when trained and tested on different datasets due to domain shift. In addition, as face images are considered highly sensitive data, the accessibility to large-scale datasets for model training is often denied. In this work, we tackle the above-mentioned problems by proposing the first Source-Free Unsupervised Dom…
Audio-guided face reenactment aims at generating photorealistic faces using audio information while maintaining the same facial movement as when speaking to a real person. However, existing methods can not generate vivid face images or only reenact low-resolution faces, which limits the application value. To solve those problems, we propose a novel deep neural network named APB2Face, which consists of GeometryPredictor and FaceReenactor modules. GeometryPredictor uses extra head pose and blink state signals as well as audio to predict the latent landmark geometry information, while FaceReenact…
Over the last years, many face analysis tasks have accomplished astounding performance, with applications including face generation and 3D face reconstruction from a single "in-the-wild" image. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, there is no method which can produce render-ready high-resolution 3D faces from "in-the-wild" images and this can be attributed to the: (a) scarcity of available data for training, and (b) lack of robust methodologies that can successfully be applied on very high-resolution data. In this work, we introduce the first method that is able to reconstruct photoreal…

Facial action unit (AU) detection in the wild is a challenging problem, due to the unconstrained variability in facial appearances and the lack of accurate annotations. Most existing methods depend on either impractical labor-intensive labeling or inaccurate pseudo labels. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end unconstrained facial AU detection framework based on domain adaptation, which transfers accurate AU labels from a constrained source domain to an unconstrained target domain by exploiting labels of AU-related facial landmarks. Specifically, we map a source image with label and a target…

We present a data-driven inference method that can synthesize a photorealistic texture map of a complete 3D face model given a partial 2D view of a person in the wild. After an initial estimation of shape and low-frequency albedo, we compute a high-frequency partial texture map, without the shading component, of the visible face area. To extract the fine appearance details from this incomplete input, we introduce a multi-scale detail analysis technique based on mid-layer feature correlations extracted from a deep convolutional neural network. We demonstrate that fitting a convex combination of…

This paper presents a novel approach for synthesizing facial affect, which is based on our annotating 600,000 frames of the 4DFAB database in terms of valence and arousal. The input of this approach is a pair of these emotional state descriptors and a neutral 2D image of a person to whom the corresponding affect will be synthesized. Given this target pair, a set of 3D facial meshes is selected, which is used to build a blendshape model and generate the new facial affect. To synthesize the affect on the 2D neutral image, 3DMM fitting is performed and the reconstructed face is deformed to genera…
Deep neural networks have largely failed to effectively utilize synthetic data when applied to real images due to the covariate shift problem. In this paper, we show that by applying a straightforward modification to an existing photorealistic style transfer algorithm, we achieve state-of-the-art synthetic-to-real domain adaptation results. We conduct extensive experimental validations on four synthetic-to-real tasks for semantic segmentation and object detection, and show that our approach exceeds the performance of any current state-of-the-art GAN-based image translation approach as measured…

This paper presents a novel multi-identity face reenactment framework, named FReeNet, to transfer facial expressions from an arbitrary source face to a target face with a shared model. The proposed FReeNet consists of two parts: Unified Landmark Converter (ULC) and Geometry-aware Generator (GAG). The ULC adopts an encode-decoder architecture to efficiently convert expression in a latent landmark space, which significantly narrows the gap of the face contour between source and target identities. The GAG leverages the converted landmark to reenact the photorealistic image with a reference image …
Current facial expression recognition systems demand an expensive re-training routine when deployed to different scenarios than they were trained for. Biasing them towards learning specific facial characteristics, instead of performing typical transfer learning methods, might help these systems to maintain high performance in different tasks, but with a reduced training effort. In this paper, we propose Contrastive Inhibitory Adaptati On (CIAO), a mechanism that adapts the last layer of facial encoders to depict specific affective characteristics on different datasets. CIAO presents an improve…
