In this work we introduce an effective model of $f(R)$ gravity containing a non-minimal coupling to the axion scalar field. The axion field is described by the misalignment model, in which the primordial $U(1)$ Peccei-Quinn symmetry is broken during inflation and the $f(R)$ gravity is described by the $R^2$ model, and in addition, the non-minimal coupling has the form $\sim h(ϕ)R^γ$, with $0<γ<0.75$. By appropriately constraining the non-minimal coupling at early times, the axion field remains frozen in its primordial vacuum expectation value, and the $R^2$ gravity dominates the inflationary era. As the Universe expands, when $H$ equals the axion mass $m_a$ and for cosmic times for which $m_a\gg H$, the axion field oscillates. By assuming a slowly varying evolution of the axion field, the axion energy density scales as $ρ_a\sim a^{-3}$, where $a$ is the scale factor, regardless of the background Hubble rate, thus behaving as cold dark matter. At late times, the axion still evolves as $ρ_a\sim a^{-3}$, however the Hubble rate of the expansion and thus the dynamical evolution of the Universe is controlled by terms containing the higher derivatives of $\sim R^γ$, which are related to the non-minimal coupling, and as we demonstrate, the resulting solution of the Friedman equation at late times is an approximate de Sitter evolution. The late-time de Sitter Hubble rate scales as $H\sim Λ^{1/2}$, where $Λ$ is an integration constant of the theory, which has its allowed values very close to the current value of the cosmological constant. Finally, the theory has a prediction for the existence of a pre-inflationary primordial stiff era, in which the energy density of the axion scales as $ρ_a\sim a^{-6}$.
The key to the phenomenological success of inflation models with axion and SU(2) gauge fields is the isotropic background of the SU(2) field. Previous studies showed that this isotropic background is an attractor solution during inflation starting from anisotropic (Bianchi Type I) spacetime; however, not all possible initial anisotropic parameter space was explored. In this paper, we explore more generic initial conditions without assuming the initial slow-roll dynamics. We find some initial anisotropic parameter space which does not lead to the isotropic background, but to violation of slow-r…
We examine the hypothesis that inflation is primarily driven by vacuum energy at a scale indicated by gauge coupling unification. Concretely, we consider a class of hybrid inflation models wherein the vacuum energy associated with a grand unified theory condensate provides the dominant energy during inflation, while a second "inflaton" scalar slow-rolls. We show that it is possible to obtain significant tensor-to-scalar ratios while fitting the observed spectral index.
In this work we investigate the quantitative effects of the misalignment kinetic axion on $R^2$ inflation. Due to the fact that the kinetic axion possesses a large kinetic energy which dominates its potential energy, during inflation its energy density redshifts as stiff matter fluid and evolves in a constant-roll way, making the second slow-roll index to be non-trivial. At the equations of motion level, the $R^2$ term dominates the evolution, thus the next possible effect of the axion could be found at the cosmological perturbations level, via the second slow-roll index which is non-trivial. …
In this paper we investigate how to describe in a unified way a constant-roll inflationary era with a dark energy era, by using the theoretical framework of $F(R)$ gravity. To this end, we introduce some classes of appropriately chosen $F(R)$ gravity models, and we examine in detail how the unification of early and late-time acceleration eras can be achieved. We study in detail the inflationary era, and as we demonstrate it is possible to achieve a viable inflationary era, for which the spectral index of primordial curvature perturbations and the scalar-to-tensor ratio can be compatible with t…
It is quite well known for some time that string inspired axionic terms of the form $ν(ϕ)\tilde{R}R$, known also as Chern-Simons terms, do not affect the scalar perturbations and the background evolution for a flat Friedman-Robertson-Walker Universe. In this paper we study and quantify the implications of the presence of the above term in the context of vacuum $f(R)$. Particularly, we assume that axionic dark matter is present during inflation, and we examine in a quantitative way the effects of axionic Chern-Simons terms on the tensor perturbations. The axion field is quantified in terms of a…
Warm inflation has been noted previously as a possible way to implement inflationary models compatible with the dS swampland bounds. But often in these discussions the heat bath dynamics is kept largely unspecified. We point out that the recently introduced Minimal Warm Inflation of arXiv:1910.07525, where an axionic coupling of the inflaton leads to an explicit model for the thermal bath, yields models of inflation that can easily fit cosmological observations while satisfying de Sitter swampland bounds, as well as the swampland distance bound and trans-Planckian censorship.
The abundance of the QCD axion is known to be suppressed if the Hubble parameter during inflation, $H_{\rm inf}$, is lower than the QCD scale, and if the inflation lasts sufficiently long. We show that the tight upper bound on the inflation scale can be significantly relaxed if the eternal old inflation is driven by the standard-model Higgs field trapped in a false vacuum at large field values. Specifically, $H_{\rm inf}$ can be larger than $100\,$GeV if the false vacuum is located above the intermediate scale. We also discuss the slow-roll inflation after the tunneling from the false vacuum t…
We study the scalar-tensor-tensor non-Gaussian signal in an inflationary model comprising also an axion coupled with SU(2) gauge fields. In this set-up, metric fluctuations are sourced by the gauge fields already at the linear level providing an enhanced chiral gravitational waves spectrum. The same mechanism is at work in generating an amplitude for the three-point function that is parametrically larger than in standard single-field inflation.
In order to accommodate the QCD axion as the dark matter (DM) in a model in which the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is broken before the end of inflation, a relatively low scale of inflation has to be invoked in order to avoid bounds from DM isocurvature fluctuations, $H_* \lesssim \mathcal{O}(10^9)\,$GeV. We construct a simple model in which the Standard Model Higgs field is non-minimally coupled to Palatini gravity and acts as the inflaton, leading to a scale of inflation $H_* \sim 10^8\,$GeV. When the energy scale at which the PQ symmetry breaks is much larger than the scale of inflation, we f…
We study the production of primordial circular ("V-mode") polarization in axion inflation coupled to fermions and gauge fields, with special attention paid to (p)reheating. We construct the power spectrum of $V$, and find a blue-tilted spectrum with index $n_V=4$. This is independent of the dominant decay channel of the inflaton (direct fermion vs. direct photon production)
We show that the cosmological abundance of string axions is much smaller than naive estimates if the Hubble scale of inflation, $H_{\rm inf}$, is sufficiently low (but can still be much higher than the axion masses) and if the inflation lasts sufficiently long. The reason is that the initial misalignment angles of the string axions follow the Bunch-Davies distribution peaked at the potential minima. As a result, the cosmological moduli problem induced by the string axions can be significantly relaxed by low-scale inflation, and astrophysical and cosmological bounds are satisfied over a wide ra…
Remarkably, if $CP$ was spontaneously broken in the physics of inflation, fermions would notice and remember it. Based on that, we present a new (non-thermal) mechanism for generating self-interacting dark Dirac fermions prior to the Hot Big Bang. The non-Abelian gauge fields and axions are well-motivated matter contents for the particle physics of inflation. In this background, we analytical study Dirac fermion doublets charged under the $SU(2)$ gauge field and use point-splitting technique to regularize the currents. We show that the non-trivial $CP$-violating vacuum structure of $SU(2)$-axi…
Because of their quantum fluctuations, axion fields had a chance to experience field excursions traversing many minima of their potentials during inflation. We study this situation by analyzing the dynamics of an axion-spectator field $ψ$, present during inflation, with a periodic potential given by $v(ψ) = Λ^4 [1 - \cos (ψ/ f)]$. By assuming that the vacuum expectation value of the field is stabilized at one of its minima, say $ψ= 0$, we compute every $n$-point correlation function of $ψ$ up to first order in $Λ^4$ using the in-in formalism. This computation allows us to identify the distribu…
This White Paper for the CNRS IN2P3 Prospective 2020 focuses on realistic and timely situations of inflation in connection with the CMB, gravitational and particle physics, adding inter-disciplinarity and unification values within a strongly predictive physical approach. The formulation of inflation in the Ginsburg-Landau approach developed by de Vega and Sanchez [1] and by Boyanovsky, de Vega, Sanchez and Destri [2]-[4] clarifies and places inflation in the setting of the effective field theories of particle physics. In addition, it sets up a clean way to directly confront the inflationary pr…
We study the production and backreaction of massive vector-like fermions in the background of a classical SU(2) gauge field during axion-driven inflation. We demonstrate all ultraviolet divergences due to the interactions with the fermions can be absorbed by renormalization of the axion wavefunction and the gauge coupling. The effects of the fermion-axion interaction vanish in the massless limit as required by symmetry. For very massive fermions, contact interactions are induced between the axion, the gauge field and the gravitational field. In this massive limit, we find the usual axion-gauge…

Under the main assumption that the axion scalar field mainly composes the dark matter in the Universe, in this paper we shall extend the formalism of kinetic axion $R^2$ gravity to include Gauss-Bonnet terms non-minimally coupled to the axion field. As we demonstrate, this non-trivial Gauss-Bonnet term has dramatic effects on the inflationary phenomenology and on the kinetic axion scenario. Specifically, in the context of our formalism, the kinetic axion ceases to be kinetically dominated at the end of the inflationary era, since the condition $\dotϕ\simeq 0$ naturally emerges in the theory. T…
We propose the unified models of cosmological inflation, spontaneous SUSY breaking, and the dark energy (de Sitter vacuum) in $N=1$ supergravity with the dilaton-axion chiral superfield $T$ in the presence of an $N=1$ vector multiplet with the alternative Fayet-Iliopoulos term. By using the Kähler potential as $K=-α\log(T+\bar{T})$ and the superpotential as a sum of a constant and a linear term, we find that viable inflation is possible for $3\leqα\leqα_{\rm max}$ where $α_{\rm max}\approx 7.235$. Observations of the amplitude of primordial scalar perturbations fix the SUSY breaking scale in o…
A gravitational wave background is expected to emerge from the superposition of numerous gravitational wave sources of both astrophysical and cosmological origin. A number of cosmological models can have a parity violation, resulting in the generation of circularly polarised gravitational waves. We investigate the constraining power of third generation Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer detectors, for a gravitational wave background generated by early universe axion inflation.
A unified description of inflation, dark energy, and dark matter is presented within a two-scalar-field cosmological model. Inflation, assumed to be of the warm type, is driven by one of the scalar fields, which, shortly after the end of the inflationary period, decouples from radiation and begins to oscillate rapidly around the minimum of its potential, thus behaving like cold dark matter; the second scalar field emerges, at recent times, as the dominant component of the universe, giving rise to a second era of accelerated expansion. For certain values of the parameters of the model, the cosm…
We show that the upper bound of the classical QCD axion window can be significantly relaxed for low-scale inflation. If the Gibbons-Hawking temperature during inflation is lower than the QCD scale, the initial QCD axion misalignment angle follows the Bunch-Davies distribution. The distribution is peaked at the strong CP conserving minimum if there is no other light degree of freedom contributing to the strong CP phase. As a result, the axion overproduction problem is significantly relaxed even for an axion decay constant larger than $10^{12}$GeV. We also provide concrete hilltop inflation mode…

We examine the theoretical possibility for the heavy QCD axion to induce slow-roll inflation while solving the strong CP problem through the Peccei-Quinn mechanism. If the cancellation between contributions from a small-size instanton and another Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking occurs with high accuracy, the potential can be flattened enough near its maximum to achieve hilltop inflation. This comes at the cost of severe fine-tuning of their relative size and phase, but it also allows us to relate the high quality problem of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry to the fine-tuning problem of the hilltop inf…
