The key to the phenomenological success of inflation models with axion and SU(2) gauge fields is the isotropic background of the SU(2) field. Previous studies showed that this isotropic background is an attractor solution during inflation starting from anisotropic (Bianchi Type I) spacetime; however, not all possible initial anisotropic parameter space was explored. In this paper, we explore more generic initial conditions without assuming the initial slow-roll dynamics. We find some initial anisotropic parameter space which does not lead to the isotropic background, but to violation of slow-roll conditions, terminating inflation prematurely. The basin of attraction increases when we introduce another scalar field acting as inflaton and make the axion-SU(2) system a spectator sector. Therefore, the spectator axion-SU(2) model is phenomenologically more attractive.
SU(2) gauge fields coupled to an axion field can acquire an isotropic background solution during inflation. We study homogeneous but anisotropic inflationary solutions in the presence of such (massless) gauge fields. A gauge field in the cosmological background may pose a threat to spatial isotropy. We show, however, that such models $\textit{generally}$ isotropize in Bianchi type-I geometry, and the isotropic solution is the attractor. Restricting the setup by adding an axial symmetry, we revisited the numerical analysis presented in Wolfson et.al (2020). We find that the reported numerical b…

We discuss two-stage dilaton-axion inflation models [1] and describe $α$-attractor models with either exponential or polynomial approach to the plateau. We implement one of the models of primordial black hole production proposed in [2] in the $α$-attractor context, and develop its supergravity version. The predictions of this model following from its polynomial attractor properties are: $n_s$ and $r$ are $α$-independent, $r$ depends on the mass parameter $μ$ defining the approach to the plateau. The tachyonic instability at the transition point between the two stages of inflation is proportion…
We constructed a model of natural inflation in the context of $α$-attractor supergravity, in which both the dilaton field and the axion field are light during inflation, and the inflaton may be a combination of the two. The T-model version of this theory is defined on the Poincare disk with radius |Z| = 1. It describes a Mexican hat potential with the flat axion direction corresponding to a circle of radius |Z| < 1. The axion decay constant $f_{a}$ in this theory can be exponentially large because of the hyperbolic geometry of the Poincare disk. Depending on initial conditions, this model may …
We study a particular version of the theory of cosmological $α$-attractors with $α=1/3$, in which both the dilaton (inflaton) field and the axion field are light during inflation. The kinetic terms in this theory originate from maximal $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal symmetry and from maximal $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity. We show that because of the underlying hyperbolic geometry of the moduli space in this theory, it exhibits double attractor behavior: their cosmological predictions are stable not only with respect to significant modifications of the dilaton potential, but also with respect to…
In this work we consider the effect of an $R^2$ term on the kinetic misalignment axion theory. By using the slow-roll assumptions during inflation and the field equations, we construct an autonomous dynamical system for the kinetic axion, including the effects of the $R^2$ term and we solve numerically the dynamical system. As we demonstrate, the pure kinetic axion attractor is transposed to the right in the field phase space, and it is no longer $(ϕ,\dotϕ)=(\langle ϕ\rangle,0)$, but it is $(ϕ,\dotϕ)=(\langle ϕ'\rangle,0)$, with $\langle ϕ'\rangle\neq 0$ some non-zero value of the scalar field…
Fibre inflation is a specific string theory construction based on the Large Volume Scenario that produces an inflationary plateau. We outline its relation to $α$-attractor models for inflation, with the cosmological sector originating from certain string theory corrections leading to $α=2$ and $α=1/2$. Above a certain field range, the steepening effect of higher-order corrections leads first to the breakdown of single-field slow-roll and after that to the onset of 2-field dynamics: the overall volume of the extra dimensions starts to participate in the effective dynamics. Finally, we propose e…
It is often claimed that the ultra-slow-roll regime of inflation, where the dynamics of the inflaton field are friction dominated, is a non-attractor and/or transient. In this work we carry out a phase-space analysis of ultra-slow roll in an arbitrary potential, $V(ϕ)$. We show that while standard slow roll is always a dynamical attractor whenever it is a self-consistent approximation, ultra-slow roll is stable for an inflaton field rolling down a convex potential with $M_{\scriptscriptstyle{\mathrm{Pl}}} V''>|V'|$ (or for a field rolling up a concave potential with $M_{\scriptscriptstyle{\mat…
In this work we investigate the quantitative effects of the misalignment kinetic axion on $R^2$ inflation. Due to the fact that the kinetic axion possesses a large kinetic energy which dominates its potential energy, during inflation its energy density redshifts as stiff matter fluid and evolves in a constant-roll way, making the second slow-roll index to be non-trivial. At the equations of motion level, the $R^2$ term dominates the evolution, thus the next possible effect of the axion could be found at the cosmological perturbations level, via the second slow-roll index which is non-trivial. …
We construct new models of inflation and spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in de Sitter vacuum, with a single chiral superfield, where inflaton is the superpartner of the goldstino. Our approach is based on hyperbolic Kähler geometry, and a gauged (non-axionic) $U(1)_R$ symmetry rotating the chiral scalar field by a phase. The $U(1)_R$ gauge field combines with the angular component of the chiral scalar to form a massive vector, and single-field inflation is driven by the radial part of the scalar. We find that in a certain parameter range they can be approximated by simplest Starobinsky-like…
The $(3+1)$-dimensional evolution of an inhomogeneous axion field configuration around the QCD epoch is studied numerically, including important non-linear effects due to the attractive self-interaction. It is found that axion perturbations on scales corresponding to causally disconnected regions at $T \sim 1 \, {\rm GeV}$ can lead to very dense pseudo-soliton configurations we call axitons. These configurations evolve to axion miniclusters with present density $ρ_a \ga 10^{-8}\,{\rm g \, cm^{-3}}$. This is high enough for the collisional $2a \rightarrow 2a$ process to lead to Bose--Einstein r…
We study the cosmological evolution of a complex scalar field with a self-interaction potential $V(|φ|^2)$, possibly describing self-gravitating Bose-Einstein condensates, using a fully general relativistic treatment. We generalize the hydrodynamic representation of the Klein-Gordon-Einstein equations in the weak field approximation developed in our previous paper. We establish the general equations governing the evolution of a spatially homogeneous complex scalar field in an expanding background. We show how they can be simplified in the fast oscillation regime and derive the equation of stat…
Environment, such as the accretion disk, could modify the signal of the gravitational wave from the astrophysical black hole binaries. In this article, we model the matter field around the intermediate-mass binary black holes by means of an axion-like scalar field and investigate their joint evolution. In details, we consider the equal mass binary black holes surrounded by a shell of axion-like scalar field both in spherical symmetric and non-spherical symmetric cases, and with different strength of the scalar field. Our result shows that the environmental scalar field could essentially modify…
We study the phase space of initial conditions for brane inflation, and find that including the effects of the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) kinetic term dramatically improves previous estimates on the amount of fine tuning of initial conditions necessary for inflation, even for models dominated by slow roll. Two effects turn out to be important for the phase space analysis: restrictions on the total available phase space due to UV effects in brane inflation, and the extension of the inflationary attractor to the DBI inflationary regime. We compare the amount of initial conditions fine tuning requir…
