In almost all the past analyses of the decomposition of the nucleon spin into its constituents, surface terms are simply assumed to vanish and not to affect the integrated sum rule of the nucleon spin. However, several authors claim that neglect of surface terms is not necessarily justified, especially owing to possible nontrivial topological configuration of the gluon field in the QCD vacuum. There also exist some arguments indicating that the nontrivial gluon topology would bring about a delta-function type singularity at zero Bjorken variable into the longitudinally polarized gluon distribution function, thereby invalidating a naive partonic sum rule for the total nucleon spin. In the present paper, we carefully examine the role of surface terms in the nucleon spin decomposition problem. We shall argue that surface terms do not prevent us from obtaining a physically meaningful decomposition of the nucleon spin. In particular, we demonstrate that nontrivial topology of the gluon field would not bring about a delta-function type singularity into the longitudinally polarized gluon distribution functions. We also make some critical comments on the recent analyses of the role of surface terms in the density level decomposition of the total nucleon angular momentum as well as that of the total photon angular momentum.
The gluon condensate as a function of temperature and baryon density in a nucleon medium is obtained from an effective dilaton Lagrangian. It is shown that, at a normal nuclear density of nucleons, n_0 = 0.17 fm^{-3} the gluon condensate decreases by about 10%.
The Nucleon-Nucleon interaction in the singlet ($^1 S_0$) and triplet ($^3 S_1$) channels have been studied in the framework of Relativistic Harmonic Model using the Resonating Group Method in Born-Oppenheimer approximation. The full Hamiltonian consists of the kinetic energy, two body confinement potential, confined one gluon exchange potential and one pion exchange potential. Contribution of Confined One Gluon Exchange Potential and One Pion Exchange Potential to the adiabatic nucleon-nucleon interaction potential is discussed.
We demonstrate that there exist two kinds of gauge-invariant decompositions of the nucleon spin, which are physically inequivalent. The quark and gluon orbital angular momenta (OAMs) appearing in one decomposition are basically the canonical OAMs, while the quark and gluon OAMs appearing in another decomposition are called the dynamical OAMs. It is shown that the dynamical OAMs of quarks and gluons in the nucleon can be related to definite high-energy deep-inelastic-scattering observables. On the other hand, we conjecture that the canonical OAMs of quarks and gluon in the nucleon are model-dep…
The gluon-exchange contribution to $J/ψ$-nucleon scattering is shown to yield a sizeable scattering length of about -0.25 fm, which is consistent with the sparse available data. Hadronic corrections to gluon exchange which are generated by $ρπ$ and $D\bar D$ intermediate states of the $J/ψ$ are shown to be negligible. We also propose a new method to study $J/ψ$-nucleon elastic scattering in the reaction $π^+ d\to J/ψp p$.
The Sivers mechanism for the single-spin asymmetry in unpolarized lepton scattering from a transversely polarized nucleon is driven by the orbital angular momentum carried by its quark and gluon constituents, combined with QCD final-state interactions. Both quark and gluon mechanisms can generate such a single-spin asymmetry, though only the quark mechanism can explain the small single-spin asymmetry measured by the COMPASS collaboration on the deuteron, suggesting the gluon mechanism is small relative to the quark mechanism. We detail empirical studies through which the gluon and quark orbita…
In recent papers, we have established the existence of gauge-invariant decomposition of nucleon spin, each term of which can be related to known high-energy deep-inelastic-scattering observables. A subtlety remains, however, for the intrinsic spin part of gluons at the quantum level. In fact, it was sometimes claimed that the evolution of gluon spin depends on the gauge choice and its physical interpretation makes sense only in the light-cone gauge. In the present paper, we will demonstrate explicitly that the gluon spin operator appearing in our decomposition evolves gauge-independently and t…
We study a thermodynamically consistent implementation of the nucleon volume in the mean field theory, and find that this volume has large consequences on the properties of hadronic matter under extreme conditions such as in astrophysical objects and high energy heavy-ion collisions. It is shown that we can reproduce the critical temperature $T_{c}\simeq 200$ MeV predicted by lattice QCD calculations for the phase transition from hadronic matter to quark-gluon plasma, by using parameters which are adjusted to fit all empirical data for normal nuclear matter.
The contribution of the anomalous quark-gluon interaction induced by instantons to the polarized and unpolarized gluon distributions in nucleon is estimated. It is shown that this interaction leads to negative gluon polarization in nucleon.
We study the possible contribution of the nucleon's virtual meson cloud to the sea quark distribution as observed in deep inelastic lepton scattering. We adjust the meson-nucleon cut-offs to the large-x tails of the antiquark distributions, find qualitatively different behavior in the flavor singlet and non-singlet channels and study the scale dependence of our results. We demonstrate that, within convolution models, to reproduce the sea quark distribution the relevant pion momenta should be around 0.8 GeV.
A controversy is raging concerning the most physically meaningful definition of quark and gluon angular momentum, a question of importance in understanding the internal structure of the nucleon. There are, in my, opinion, two principal candidates: the Belinfante version, $\bm{J}_{bel}$, which is gauge invariant, and the Canonical version, $ \bm{J}_{can}$, which is non-gauge invariant, but which has a physically intuitive structure. I demonstrate the wholly unexpected result that for quarks in a spin 1/2 nucleon the expectation value of $\bm{J}_{bel}(\textrm{quark})$ is equal to the expectation…
The inclusive distributions of gluons and pions are calculated with absolute normalization for high-energy nucleon-nucleon collisions. The results for several unintegrated gluon distributions from the literature are compared. The gluon distribution proposed recently by Kharzeev and Levin based on the idea of gluon saturation is tested against DIS data from HERA. We find huge differences in both rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of gluons and pions in nucleon-nucleon collisions for different models of unintegrated gluon distributions. The approximations used recently in the literat…
In analogy to the Altarelli-Parisi equation for the quark and gluon helicity contributions to the nucleon spin, we derive an evolution equation for the quark and gluon orbital angular momenta. The solution of the combined equations yields the asymptotic fractions of the nucleon spin carried by quarks and gluons: $3n_f/(16+3n_f)$ and $16/(16+3n_f)$, respectively, where $n_f$ is the number of active quark flavors. These are identical to the well-known asymptotic partitions of the nucleon momentum between quark and gluon contributions. We show that the axial-anomaly contribution to the quark heli…
It is shown that the amplitude for the scattering of a heavy quarkonium system from a nucleon near threshold is completely determined by the fraction of angular momentum, as well as linear momentum, carried by gluons in the nucleon. A form for the quarkonium-nucleon non-relativistic potential is derived.
The lower excitation spectrum of the nucleon and $Δ$ is calculated in a relativistic chiral quark model. Corrections to the baryon mass spectrum from the second order self-energy and exchange diagrams induced by pion and gluon fields are estimated in the field -theoretical framework. Convergent results for the self-energy terms are obtained when including the intermediate quark and antiquark states with a total momentum up to $j=25/2$. Relativistic one-meson and color-magnetic one-gluon exchange forces are shown to generate spin 0, 1, 2, etc. operators, which couple the lower and the upper com…
We derive exact relations among the polarized gluon and three-gluon distributions in the transversely polarized nucleon which are relevant to single and double spin asymmetries in various hard processes. We also discuss the partonic decomposition of the transverse nucleon spin and point out a potential problem with frame-independence.
The distribution of longitudinal gluons in a nucleon, introduced earlier by Gorsky and Ioffe, is estimated from below by making use of the positivity of density matrix and the analogue of the Wandzura-Wilczek relation for the light-cone distributions of polarized gluons in a transversely polarized nucleon.
We derive the effective chiral Lagrangian for low energy eta--nucleon and eta'--nucleon interactions and show that gluonic degrees of freedom, via the axial anomaly, induce a contact term in the pp -> pp eta and pp -> pp eta' reactions. We then discuss the consequences for the extraction of g_{eta'NN} from experimental data.
We derive the analog of the Wandzura-Wilczek relation for the light-cone distributions of polarized gluons in a transversely polarized nucleon. The short distance cross-section is entirely due to the intrinsic transverse momenta of gluon in the nucleon, in complete analogy to the quark case. Numerical estimate for the double spin transverse asymmetries at RHIC are presented.
We present the $x$-dependent nucleon and pion gluon distribution from lattice QCD using the pseudo-PDF approach, on lattice ensembles with $2+1+1$ flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ), generated by MILC Collaboration. We use clover fermions for the valence action and momentum smearing to achieve pion boost momentum up to 2.56~GeV on three lattice spacings $a\approx 0.9, 0.12$ and 0.15~fm and three pion masses $M_π\approx 220$, 310 and 690~MeV. We compare our pion and preliminary nucleon gluon results with the determination by global fits.
We calculate the variation of the chiral condensate in medium with respect to the quark chemical potential and evaluate the pion-nucleon sigma term via the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. The variation of chiral condensate in medium are obtained by solving the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equation for quark propagator at finite chemical potential, with different models for the quark-gluon vertex and gluon propagator. We obtain the value of the sigma term $σ_{πN}$ = 62(1)(2) MeV, where the first represents the systematic error due to our different model for the quark-gluon vertex and gluon propagator an…
We calculate gluon production in deep inelastic scattering of the current j= - (1/4) F_{μν}^a F_{μν}^a off a large nucleus and in nucleon-nucleus collisions. In a covariant gauge calculation the transverse momentum spectrum of the gluon is determined by the final state interactions of the gluon with the nucleons in the nucleus. In a light-cone gauge calculation final state interactions are absent and these effects come from the light-cone wavefunction of the nucleus. We work in an approximation which neglects QCD evolution of gluons in the nucleon, that is in a quasi-classical approximation.
QCD suggests that gluons in the nucleon play an important role in {\it so-called} ``the proton spin problem''. In this talk, the behavior of the polarized gluon distribution in the nucleon is discussed by using the positivity condition of distribution functions together with the unpolarized and polarized experimental data.
We compare constraints on the gluon polarization in the nucleon obtained in next to leading order global QCD fits to polarized deep inelastic scattering data with those coming from observables more directly linked to the gluon polarization, such as the double spin asymmetry measured by Phenix at RHIC, and high-pT hadron production studied by COMPASS

We study the nucleon electromagnetic form factors in a quark-gluon core model framework, which can be viewed as an extension of the Isgur-Karl model of baryons. Using this picture we derive nucleon electromagnetic dipole form factors at low Q^2 and the deviation from the dipole form at high Q^2, that are consistent with the existing experimental data.
Recently, X. Chen et al. proposed a new approach to the gauge invariant decomposition of the nucleon spin into helicity and orbital parts. The key ingredient in their construction is the separation of the gauge field into `physical' and `pure gauge' parts. We suggest a simple separation scheme and show that the resulting gluon helicity coincides with the first moment of the conventional polarized gluon distribution measurable in high energy experiments.
Using short distance QCD methods based on the operator product expansion, we calculate the $J/ψ$ photoproduction cross section in terms of the gluon distribution function of the nucleon. Comparing the result with data, we show that experimental behaviour of the cross section correctly reflects the $x$-dependence of the gluon distribution obtained from deep inelastic scattering.
~Based on the gauge invariant quark canonical momentum we construct two theoretically possible decompositions of nucleon momentum to those of quarks and gluons. We predict that either 6% or 21% of nucleon momentum is carried by gluons, depending on what type of gluons are in nucleons. We clarify the existing confusions on this problem and discuss the physical implications of our result on the proton spin crisis problem.
We give an overview of the current status of investigations of the polarization of gluons in the nucleon. We describe some of the physics of the spin-dependent gluon parton distribution and its phenomenology in high-energy polarized hadronic scattering. We also review the recent experimental results.
The parton distribution functions (PDFs) provide process-independent information about the quarks and gluons inside hadrons. Although the gluon PDF can be obtained from a global fit to experimental data, it is not constrained well in the large-$x$ region. Theoretical gluon-PDF studies are much fewer than those of the quark PDFs. In this work, we present the first lattice-QCD results that access the $x$-dependence of the gluon unpolarized PDF of the nucleon. The lattice calculation is carried out with nucleon momenta up to 2.16 GeV, lattice spacing $a\approx0.12$ fm, with valence pion masses of…
We examine the conventional picture that gluons carry about half of the nucleon momentum in the asymptotic limit. We reveal that this large fraction is due to an unsuitable definition of the gluon momentum in an interacting theory. If defined in a gauge-invariant and consistent way, the asymptotic gluon momentum fraction is computed to be only about one fifth. This result suggests that the asymptotic limit of the nucleon spin structure should also be reexamined. Possible experimental test of our finding is discussed in terms of novel parton distribution functions.
We review the theory and phenomenology of the axial U(1) problem with emphasis on the role of gluonic degrees of freedom in the low-energy pp -> pp eta and pp -> pp eta' reactions.
Coupling constants of $η$ and $η^{\prime}$ mesons with nucleons have been calculated using the method of QCD sum rules. Starting from vacuum-to-meson correlation function of interpolating fields of two nucleons, its matrix element with respect to nucleon spinors has been considered. Coupling constants at the physical points have been estimated from extrapolation of results obtained at two other points. Anomalous glue has been found to give substantial contribution to the coupling constants and also accounts for a significant OZI-rule violation.
We discuss the shortfalls of existing resolutions of the long-standing gauge invariance problem of the canonical decomposition of the nucleon spin to the spin and angular momentum of quarks and gluons. We provide two logically flawless expressions of nucleon spin which have different physical meanings, using the gauge independent Abelian decomposition. The first one is based on the assumption that all gluons (binding and valence gluons) contribute to the nucleon spin, but the second one is based on the assumption that only the binding gluons (and the quarks) contribute to it. We propose the se…
We study the small-$x$ evolution equation for the gluon generalized parton distribution (GPD) $E_g$ of the nucleon. It is shown that $E_g$ at vanishing skewness exhibits the Regge behavior identical to the BFKL Pomeron, despite its association with nucleon helicity-flip processes. We also consider the effect of gluon saturation and demonstrate that $E_g$ gets saturated in the same way as its helicity-nonflip counterpart $H_g$. Our result has a direct impact on the modeling of $E_g$ as well as the small-$x$ contribution to nucleon spin sum rules.
Using an intrinsic parton model we estimate the rough shape and size of the intrinsic gluon component of the nucleon, corresponding to an energy scale $Q$ of the order $\lqcd$. It is nearly as hard in shape as the valence quark, while its size accounts for a quarter of the nucleon momentum. Both are in qualitative agreement with the input leading twist gluon distribution assumed by Glück, Reya and Vogt at this scale in order to reproduce the observed distributions at $Q^2 \gsim 1$ GeV$^2$ via perturbative QCD evolution.
There are different operators of quark and gluon momenta, orbital angular momenta, and gluon spin in the nucleon structure study. The precise meaning of these operators are studied based on gauge invariance, Lorentz covariance and canonical quantization rule. The advantage and disadvantage of different definitions are analyzed. A gauge invariant canonical decomposition of the total momentum and angular momentum into quark and gluon parts is suggested based on the decomposition of the gauge potential into gauge invariant (covariant) physical part and gauge dependent pure gauge part. We perform explorative analyses of the 3D gluon content of the proton via a study of (un)polarized twist-2 gluon TMDs, calculated in a spectator model for the parent nucleon. Our approach encodes a flexible parametrization for the spectator-mass density, suited to describe both moderate and small-$x$ effects. All these prospective developments are relevant in the investigation of the gluon dynamics inside nucleons and nuclei, which constitutes one of the major goals of new-generation colliding machines, as the EIC, the HL-LHC and NICA.
We propose methods to construct gauge invariant decompositions of the nucleon spin, particularly gauge invariant descriptions of the gluon polarization. We show that gauge invariant decompositions of the nucleon spin can be derived naturally from the conserved current of a generalized Lorentz transformation by the Noether theorem. We propose a gauge invariant extension of the Chern-Simons current as a possible description of the gluon spin, and we also examine the problem of gauge dependence of this extended Chern-Simons current.
Instanton effects can give large contribution to strong interacting processes, especially at the energy scale where perturbative QCD is no longer valid. However instanton contribution to the gluon contribution in constituent quark and nucleon has never been calculated before. Based on both the constituent quark picture and the instanton model for QCD vacuum, we calculate the unpolarized and polarized gluon distributions in the constituent quark and in the nucleon for the first time. We find that the pion field plays an important role in producing both the unpolarized and the polarized gluon di…
It is suggested that virtual gluon-clusters exist in nucleon, and that such colorless and colored objects manifest themselves in the small $x_B$ region of inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering processes. The relationship between the space-time properties of such clusters and the striking features observed in these scattering processes is discussed. A phase-space model is used to show how quantitative results can be obtained in such an approach. The results of this model-calculation are in reasonable agreement with the existing data. Further experiments are suggested.
We calculate the nucleon matrix element of Weinberg's dimension-6 CP-odd gluon operator $f^{abc} (\tilde F_{μν})^a (F^{μρ})^b (F^ν_{\;\;ρ})^c$ in the instanton vacuum. In leading order of the instanton packing fraction, the dimension-6 operator is effectively proportional to the topological charge density $(\tilde F_{μν})^a (F^{μν})^a$, whose nucleon matrix element is given by the flavor-singlet axial charge and constrained by the $U(1)_A$ anomaly. The nucleon matrix element of the dimension-6 operator is obtained substantially larger than in other estimates, because of the strong localization…
We present the first exploratory lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculation of the polarized gluon Ioffe-time pseudo-distribution in the nucleon. The Ioffe-time pseudo-distribution provides a frame-independent and gauge-invariant framework to determine the gluon helicity in the nucleon from first principles. We employ a high-statistics computation using a $32^3\times 64$ lattice ensemble characterized by a $358$ MeV pion mass and a $0.094$ fm lattice spacing. We establish the pseudo-distribution approach as a feasible method to address the proton spin puzzle with successive improvements …
The near-threshold photoproduction of $J/ψ$ is regarded as one golden process to unveil the nucleon mass structure, pentaquark state involving the charm quarks, and the poorly constrained gluon distribution of the nucleon at large $x$ ($>0.1$). In this paper, we present an analysis of the current experimental data under a two-gluon exchange model, which shows a good consistency. Using a parameterized function form with three free parameters, we have determined the nucleonic gluon distribution at the $J/ψ$ mass scale. Moreover, we predict the differential cross section of the electroproduction …
The amplitude of diffractive $ρ$ (and open quark) leptoproduction on a polarized target is calculated in the leading log approximation of pQCD using the hadron-parton duality hypothesis. The spin-spin asymmetry is expressed in terms of the spin dependent gluon and quark structure functions in the small $x$ region. Therefore the $γ^*+p\to ρ+p$ reaction provides a promising tool to study the spin dependent gluon distribution $ΔG(x,q^2)$.
We examine the $Q^2$ evolution of gluon polarization in polarized nucleons. As is well known, the evolution of $α_s ΔG(Q^2)$ is negligible for typical momentum transfer variations found in experimental deep inelastic scattering. As $α_s$ increases, however, the leading nonzero term in the evolution equation for the singlet first moment reduces the magnitude of the gluon spin. At low $Q^2$ the term $α_s ΔG$ can vanish, and ultimately become negative. Thus, low energy model calculations yielding negative $ΔG$ are not necessarily in conflict with experimental evidence for positive gluon polarizat…
In this paper, we put forward a way to study the nucleon's thermodynamic properties such as its temperature, entropy and so on, without inputting any free parameters by human hand, even the nucleon's mass and radius. First we use the Lagrangian density of the quark gluon coupling fields to deduce the Dirac Equation of the quarks confined in the gluon fields. By boundary conditions we solve the wave functions and energy eigenvalues of the quarks, and thus get energy-momentum tensor, nucleon mass, and density of states. Then we utilize a hybrid grand canonical ensemble, to generate the temperatu…
Although the matrix element of the gluon spin operator in nucleon helicity states is known to be independent of some special choices of gauge, we show that it is not invariant under a general gauge transformation. We find that there exists a simple means of obtaining the matrix element in a different choice of gauge from a calculation made in one specific gauge. Similar conclusions hold for other manifestly gauge-dependent operators present in the QCD angular momentum operator.
Parton distributions in impact parameter space, which are obtained by Fourier transforming GPDs, are exhibit a significant deviation from axial symmetry when the target and/or quark is transversely polarized. From this deformation, we present an intuitive derivation of the Ji relation. In a scalar diquark model and in QED, we compare the Ji and Jaffe-Manohar decompositions of the nucleon spin. Using the MIT bag model, we estimate spectator effects through the presence of the gluon vector potential in the definitions of the quark orbital angular momentum.
In the context of the so-called valon model, we calculate $\frac{δg}{g}$ and show that although it is small and compatible with the measured values, the gluon contribution to the spin of nucleon can be sizable. The smallness of $\frac{δg}{g}$ in the measured kinematical region should not be interpreted as $δg$ being small. In fact, $δg$ itself at small x, and the first moment of the polarized gluon distribution in the nucleon, $Δg(Q^2)$, are large
In this paper we study the gluon distribution functions in nucleons and pions at a low resolution $Q^2$ scale. This is an important issue since parton densities at low $Q^2$ have always been taken as an external input which is adjusted through DGLAP evolution to fit the experimental data at higher scales. Here, in the framework of a model recently developed, it is shown that the hypothetical cloud of {\it neutral} pions surrounding nucleons and pions appears to be responsible for the characteristic valence-like gluon distributions needed at the inital low scale. As an additional result, we get…
Inspired by Laughlin's theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect, we explore the topological nature of the quark-gluon plasma and the nucleons in the context of the Clifford algebra. In our model, each quark is transformed into a composite particle via the simultaneous attachment of a spin monopole and an isospin monopole. This is induced by a novel kind of meson endowed with both spin and isospin degrees of freedom. The interactions in the strongly coupled quark-gluon system are governed by the topological winding number of the monopoles, which is an odd integer to ensure that the overall …
The authors claim to have found a "proper", "gauge-invariant" definition of a charged-particle's momentum in gauge theory, which is more "superior" than the textbook version. I show that their result arises from a misunderstanding of gauge symmetry by generalizing the Coulomb gauge result indiscriminately and is not physical.
