Spoken language understanding (SLU) systems can be trained on two types of labelled data: aligned or unaligned. Unaligned data do not require word by word annotation and is easier to be obtained. In the paper, we focus on spoken language understanding from unaligned data whose annotation is a set of act-slot-value triples. Previous works usually focus on improve slot-value pair prediction and estimate dialogue act types separately, which ignores the hierarchical structure of the act-slot-value triples. Here, we propose a novel hierarchical decoding model which dynamically parses act, slot and value in a structured way and employs pointer network to handle out-of-vocabulary (OOV) values. Experiments on DSTC2 dataset, a benchmark unaligned dataset, show that the proposed model not only outperforms previous state-of-the-art model, but also can be generalized effectively and efficiently to unseen act-slot type pairs and OOV values.
We experiment graph-based Semi-Supervised Learning (SSL) of Conditional Random Fields (CRF) for the application of Spoken Language Understanding (SLU) on unaligned data. The aligned labels for examples are obtained using IBM Model. We adapt a baseline semi-supervised CRF by defining new feature set and altering the label propagation algorithm. Our results demonstrate that our proposed approach significantly improves the performance of the supervised model by utilizing the knowledge gained from the graph.
This paper presents two ways of dealing with scarce data in semantic decoding using N-Best speech recognition hypotheses. First, we learn features by using a deep learning architecture in which the weights for the unknown and known categories are jointly optimised. Second, an unsupervised method is used for further tuning the weights. Sharing weights injects prior knowledge to unknown categories. The unsupervised tuning (i.e. the risk minimisation) improves the F-Measure when recognising nearly zero-shot data on the DSTC3 corpus. This unsupervised method can be applied subject to two assumptio…
This paper presents a deep learning architecture for the semantic decoder component of a Statistical Spoken Dialogue System. In a slot-filling dialogue, the semantic decoder predicts the dialogue act and a set of slot-value pairs from a set of n-best hypotheses returned by the Automatic Speech Recognition. Most current models for spoken language understanding assume (i) word-aligned semantic annotations as in sequence taggers and (ii) delexicalisation, or a mapping of input words to domain-specific concepts using heuristics that try to capture morphological variation but that do not scale to o…
SLU combines ASR and NLU capabilities to accomplish speech-to-intent understanding. In this paper, we compare different ways to combine ASR and NLU, in particular using a single Conformer model with different ways to use its components, to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. We find that it is not necessarily a choice between two-stage decoding and end-to-end systems which determines the best system for research or application. System optimization still entails carefully improving the performance of each component. It is difficult to prove that one direction is con…

Natural language generation (NLG) plays a critical role in spoken dialogue systems. This paper presents a new approach to NLG by using recurrent neural networks (RNN), in which a gating mechanism is applied before RNN computation. This allows the proposed model to generate appropriate sentences. The RNN-based generator can be learned from unaligned data by jointly training sentence planning and surface realization to produce natural language responses. The model was extensively evaluated on four different NLG domains. The results show that the proposed generator achieved better performance on …
Decoding speaker's intent is a crucial part of spoken language understanding (SLU). The presence of noise or errors in the text transcriptions, in real life scenarios make the task more challenging. In this paper, we address the spoken language intent detection under noisy conditions imposed by automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems. We propose to employ confusion2vec word feature representation to compensate for the errors made by ASR and to increase the robustness of the SLU system. The confusion2vec, motivated from human speech production and perception, models acoustic relationships be…

In a hybrid automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, a pronunciation lexicon (PL) and a language model (LM) are essential to correctly retrieve spoken word sequences. Being a morphologically complex language, the vocabulary of Malayalam is so huge and it is impossible to build a PL and an LM that cover all diverse word forms. Usage of subword tokens to build PL and LM, and combining them to form words after decoding, enables the recovery of many out of vocabulary words. In this work we investigate the impact of using syllables as subword tokens instead of words in Malayalam ASR, and evaluate…
Recent works in spoken language translation (SLT) have attempted to build end-to-end speech-to-text translation without using source language transcription during learning or decoding. However, while large quantities of parallel texts (such as Europarl, OpenSubtitles) are available for training machine translation systems, there are no large (100h) and open source parallel corpora that include speech in a source language aligned to text in a target language. This paper tries to fill this gap by augmenting an existing (monolingual) corpus: LibriSpeech. This corpus, used for automatic speech rec…

This paper proposes a simple and effective approach for automatic recognition of Cued Speech (CS), a visual communication tool that helps people with hearing impairment to understand spoken language with the help of hand gestures that can uniquely identify the uttered phonemes in complement to lipreading. The proposed approach is based on a pre-trained hand and lips tracker used for visual feature extraction and a phonetic decoder based on a multistream recurrent neural network trained with connectionist temporal classification loss and combined with a pronunciation lexicon. The proposed syste…

Natural language generation (NLG) is a critical component of spoken dialogue and it has a significant impact both on usability and perceived quality. Most NLG systems in common use employ rules and heuristics and tend to generate rigid and stylised responses without the natural variation of human language. They are also not easily scaled to systems covering multiple domains and languages. This paper presents a statistical language generator based on a semantically controlled Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) structure. The LSTM generator can learn from unaligned data by jointly optimising sentence…

Intent detection (ID) and Slot filling (SF) are two major tasks in spoken language understanding (SLU). Recently, attention mechanism has been shown to be effective in jointly optimizing these two tasks in an interactive manner. However, latest attention-based works concentrated only on the first-order attention design, while ignoring the exploration of higher-order attention mechanisms. In this paper, we propose a BiLinear attention block, which leverages bilinear pooling to simultaneously exploit both the contextual and channel-wise bilinear attention distributions to capture the second-orde…
The present study tackles the problem of automatically discovering spoken keywords from untranscribed audio archives without requiring word-by-word speech transcription by automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology. The problem is of practical significance in many applications of speech analytics, including those concerning low-resource languages, and large amount of multilingual and multi-genre data. We propose a two-stage approach, which comprises unsupervised acoustic modeling and decoding, followed by pattern mining in acoustic unit sequences. The whole process starts by deriving and mo…

Slot filling and intent detection are two main tasks in spoken language understanding (SLU) system. In this paper, we propose a novel non-autoregressive model named SlotRefine for joint intent detection and slot filling. Besides, we design a novel two-pass iteration mechanism to handle the uncoordinated slots problem caused by conditional independence of non-autoregressive model. Experiments demonstrate that our model significantly outperforms previous models in slot filling task, while considerably speeding up the decoding (up to X 10.77). In-depth analyses show that 1) pretraining schemes co…

A challenge in spoken language translation is that plenty of spoken content is long-form, but short units are necessary for obtaining high-quality translations. To address this mismatch, we fine-tune a general-purpose, large language model to split long ASR transcripts into segments that can be independently translated so as to maximize the overall translation quality. We compare to several segmentation strategies and find that our approach improves BLEU score on three languages by an average of 2.7 BLEU overall compared to an automatic punctuation baseline. Further, we demonstrate the effecti…
Spoken language understanding, which extracts intents and/or semantic concepts in utterances, is conventionally formulated as a post-processing of automatic speech recognition. It is usually trained with oracle transcripts, but needs to deal with errors by ASR. Moreover, there are acoustic features which are related with intents but not represented with the transcripts. In this paper, we present an end-to-end model which directly converts speech into dialog acts without the deterministic transcription process. In the proposed model, the dialog act recognition network is conjunct with an acoust…
Building robust and general dialogue models for spoken conversations is challenging due to the gap in distributions of spoken and written data. This paper presents our approach to build generalized models for the Knowledge-grounded Task-oriented Dialogue Modeling on Spoken Conversations Challenge of DSTC-10. In order to mitigate the discrepancies between spoken and written text, we mainly employ extensive data augmentation strategies on written data, including artificial error injection and round-trip text-speech transformation. To train robust models for spoken conversations, we improve pre-t…

An independent, automated method of decoding and transcribing oral speech is known as automatic speech recognition (ASR). A typical ASR system extracts feature from audio recordings or streams and run one or more algorithms to map the features to corresponding texts. Numerous of research has been done in the field of speech signal processing in recent years. When given adequate resources, both conventional ASR and emerging end-to-end (E2E) speech recognition have produced promising results. However, for low-resource languages like Bengali, the current state of ASR lags behind, although the low…
Natural language generation (NLG) is a critical component in spoken dialogue systems. Classic NLG can be divided into two phases: (1) sentence planning: deciding on the overall sentence structure, (2) surface realization: determining specific word forms and flattening the sentence structure into a string. Many simple NLG models are based on recurrent neural networks (RNN) and sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) model, which basically contains an encoder-decoder structure; these NLG models generate sentences from scratch by jointly optimizing sentence planning and surface realization using a simple …

Air traffic management and specifically air-traffic control (ATC) rely mostly on voice communications between Air Traffic Controllers (ATCos) and pilots. In most cases, these voice communications follow a well-defined grammar that could be leveraged in Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technologies. The callsign used to address an airplane is an essential part of all ATCo-pilot communications. We propose a two-steps approach to add contextual knowledge during semi-supervised training to reduce the ASR system error rates at recognizing the part of the utterance that contains the callsign. Sign Language Production (SLP) aims to translate expressions in spoken language into corresponding ones in sign language, such as skeleton-based sign poses or videos. Existing SLP models are either AutoRegressive (AR) or Non-Autoregressive (NAR). However, AR-SLP models suffer from regression to the mean and error propagation during decoding. NSLP-G, a NAR-based model, resolves these issues to some extent but engenders other problems. For example, it does not consider target sign lengths and suffers from false decoding initiation. We propose a novel NAR-SLP model via Knowledge Distillation (KD)…
This paper proposes a first attempt to build an end-to-end speech-to-text translation system, which does not use source language transcription during learning or decoding. We propose a model for direct speech-to-text translation, which gives promising results on a small French-English synthetic corpus. Relaxing the need for source language transcription would drastically change the data collection methodology in speech translation, especially in under-resourced scenarios. For instance, in the former project DARPA TRANSTAC (speech translation from spoken Arabic dialects), a large effort was dev…
