In the framework of an effective field theory of general relativity a model of scalar and vector bosons interacting with the metric field is considered. It is shown in the framework of a two-loop order calculation that for the cosmological constant term which is fixed by the condition of vanishing vacuum energy the graviton remains massless and there exists a self-consistent effective field theory of general relativity coupled to matter fields defined on a flat Minkowski background. This result is obtained under the assumption that the energy-momentum tensor of the gravitational field is given by the pseudotensor of Landau-Lifshitz's classic textbook. Implications for the cosmological constant problem are also briefly discussed.
We provide a novel, concise and self-contained evaluation of true- and false vacuum decay rates in general relativity. We insist on general covariance and choose observable boundary conditions, which yields the well known false-vacuum decay rate and a new true-vacuum decay rate that differs significantly from prior work. The rates of true- and false vacuum decays are identical in general relativity. The second variation of the action has a negative mode for all parameters. Our findings imply a new perspective on cosmological initial conditions and the ultimate fate of our universe.
Recently in the framework of a two-loop order calculation for an effective field theory of scalar and vector fields interacting with the metric field we have shown that for the cosmological constant term which is fixed by the condition of vanishing vacuum energy the graviton remains massless and there exists a self-consistent effective field theory of general relativity defined on a flat Minkowski background. In the current paper we extend the two-loop analysis for an effective field theory of fermions interacting with the gravitational field and obtain an analogous result. We also address the…

We carry out the Hamiltonian analysis of the local vacuum energy sequestering model - a manifestly local and diffeomorphism invariant extension of general relativity which has been shown to remove the radiatively unstable contribution to the vacuum energy generated by matter loops. We find that the degravitation of this UV sensitive quantity is enforced via global relations that are a consequence of the model's peculiar constraint structure. We also show that the model propagates the proper number of degrees of freedom and thus locally reduces to general relativity on-shell.
The belief still persists, at least for an important part of the community, that in general relativity the cosmological constant $Λ$ must remain immaculate. However, Bianchi identities show that $Λ$ could acquire local properties in the presence of matter, i.e., $Λ\rightarrow\,Λ(x^μ)$. In this paper we go even further, and we show that a non-uniform vacuum energy does not even require coexistence with any additional form of matter-energy, nor of any theory beyond general relativity, at least for extreme environments, such as the proximity of a black hole.
Vacuum fluctuations can obscure the detection signal of the measurement of the smallest quantum objects like single particles seemingly implying a fundamental limit to measurement accuracy. However, as we show relativistic invariance implies the disappearance of fluctuations for the space-like spectrum of an observable at zero temperature. This complete absence of noise can be harnessed to perform noiseless measurement of single particles, as we illustrate for electrons or photons. We outline a general scheme to illustrate the noiseless measurement involving the space-like spectrum of observab…
The vacuum transition probabilities for a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe with positive curvature in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity in the presence of a scalar field potential in the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation are studied. We use a general procedure to compute such transition probabilities using a Hamiltonian approach to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation presented in a previous work. We consider two situations of scalar fields, one in which the scalar field depends on all the spacetime variables and other in which the scalar field depends only on the time variable. In both cases a…
